We have classified the 112 complaints from 2012 Ford F-150 about ELECTRICAL SYSTEM into the following categories.
This is not a defective glass or frame issue. this is strictly an electrical issue on the defroster. from what i've learned about it, it seems to be a widespread problem, not just freak coincidence. if more people lived in colder climates there would be more complaints. friday dec. 16, 2016, around 8 pm. i started my ford f150 and tried to turn rear defogger on. high that day was 32, low 22. at that time of day i would expect it was closer to 22 than 32. the indicator light light for the defroster flashed on, then went out. i tried again, this time it stayed on for 15 or 20 secs. i backed out of the driveway and when shifter from reverse to forward i noticed indicator light was off again. i drove 50 to 100 yards when i heard a loud pop. the street in my subdivision are asphalt and have no potholes, it was replaced last summer. i thought i smelled something burning, and realized the rear window on passenger side was shattered. the window was still in frame, no holes and there were no chips. just a shattered piece of glass in the frame. nothing hit the window or there was no other reason the window would shatter, other than the rear defroster heating the window to a point it cracked. i talked with a shop about repairing the window, and owner told me his supplier said there are roughly 500 of these units that get replaced every week in michigan alone. i believe this is a far more widespread problem but only those states that have freezing temps and it only affects vehicles in 2-3 months a year.
I was driving on the freeway. i was driving approximately 70mph / 6th gear. my truck shifted on it's own ( i could tell by the dashboard gear indicator) into 1st gear. this caused my rear tires to lock up and put my vehicle into a skid. *tr
Was driving vehicle at 55mph heard a loud bang. sounded like an explosion! the sound startled me almost causing an accident. the rear window had shattered. pulled over and got out, the bottom right corner of the window was on fire. not realizing what was happening i attempted to pour water on it. it continued to burn, then i quickly took a rag from inside the truck and began to try an put out the fire. between that water ,rag and a screw driver the fire was finally out. the fire that was burning was very odd in nature nothing i had ever seen before. i immediately looked the incident up online and saw that this has happened hundreds of times ford motor company is fully aware but will not cover it unless entire vehicle is still under warranty. this is totally a danger to society! this almost caused an awful accident. *tr
When starting my 2012 f150 i turn the key and there is a delay and then it starts don't think that is right i get 15.6 miles per gal on my 3.5 eco-boost and kicking in the passing gear i loose power and eng. light comes on 3 times this has happen all times i pull over and shut truck off and restart light goes out.
After speaking with ford motor company i thought i should file a complaint on here as well. my husbands 2012 ford f150 power steering shut off while driving down the road. after much research, it appears his is by far not the only one. apparently other models of the same year have had recalls but not the f150. i was told go get it checked out and fixed and if we issue a recall, you might get a refund. $2200 and we can get it checked out and fixed if they see the problem. this is not an in and out service and its very disappointing a company that has been around since 1903 has turned to such poor quality in service. everyone needs to file a complaint so they will stop taking advantage of the loyalty of the customers. *tr
Our transmission is doing exactly what the recall mentioned. we are traveling with a 2 year old and i can not believe that ford does not have a fix to this problem this usa very dangerous situation while traveling on an interstate
Fuel pump fuse #27 melted causing engine to shut down and lose all power steering and brakes.
The service advancetrac warning light comes on and the blinkers will not function.
Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford f-150. while driving approximately 40 mph, the transmission downshifted into first gear and the instrument panel lights failed without warning. the contact was able to place the vehicle in neutural, turn off, and resart the vehicle. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 59,200.
While driving my 2012 f-150eb, the power steering assist quit working in the middle of a turn in a parking garage. i had to put all 180 lbs of my weight into the steer in order to avoid a concrete stanchion, 2 pedestrians and another vehicle. had my wife been driving, this could have resulted in a fatality. ford corp. claims they know of no problems with the steering on this vehicle. however, i have found numerous complaints on line citing the same problem/issues. diagnosis was "power steering electric motor failure" and repair cost is $2,200.00.
Steering wheel clock spring, which controls all steering wheel electronics and airbag is faulty. replacement clock spring required. i noticed this issue while driving and using my radio controls on the steering wheel. upon pushing a button like volume up for instance, the radio station would change. the buttons were doing the improper functions. i brought it into ford and they stated that the clock spring is faulty and needs to be replaced since it controls the airbag, which may be affected by the faulty unit.
I remote started my f-150 supercrew in the morning, it was approximately 22 degrees f outside. i drove to the corner store (0.1 miles away) to grab a bite to eat. i turned my truck off, went in, then started my truck back up to head to the gas station (0.2 miles away) & fueled up. i turned my truck back on and hit the rear defrost button to clear some ice on the rear window. after driving for about 3-4 minutes (roughly 3 miles), while on the freeway, i heard a loud "pop". i noticed that the rear window had shattered. it was the window pane located behind the driver seat. there was no impact to the window and would've been extremely unlikely since i was driving. must be an electrical issue (a short, a surge, or something). my truck is out of the 3 year warranty window, but has just under 22,000 miles on it. the dealership would not pay a penny to replace my window. i called the ford customer care line and they stand behind the dealer decision to not pay anything for it. this is clearly an issue with their vehicles. i've searched this site and seen the same problems on 2010 - 2015 models of the f-150. this problem is not being addressed what-so-ever by ford. what happens after i get this window replaced and use the defroster, only to have my new window shatter as well? i guess i have to pay for that one too. my grandmother and grandfather worked for ford. my family has been long time ford customers. this is my third ford vehicle. that trend has just ended. considering a trade in to chevy or dodge.
While driving on the highway at 7:15am i was using the rear window defroster to melt the ice on the rear window. it was 24 degrees fahrenheit outside. the drivers side rear window pane (3 paned rear window) shattered. the window that shattered is where the connections for the rear defrost are located. there were no holes or impact points on the window.
Started my truck around 9 pm and placed the transmission in reverse, had to back down a long straight parking lot, speeds of at least 15 mph. came to a complete stop, shifted the transmission into drive and pulled out onto a main road, hit the merge turn signal and heard nothing. i diddnt think much of it, thought i diddnt hit the turn signal arm hard enough. turning onto main road and hit turn signal again, no sound. looked at dashboard, everything is off, no back lighting and no gauge movement/lights at all. exterior lights work but not reverse lights, turn truck on and off 3x with no resolution to the problem. 4th try finally reboots the computer and has run fine since then
Started up truck, windows were foggy so turned on front and rear defrost. rear defrost light came on and went off. pushed rear defrost button again and light would not come on. parked the truck got out and heard a loud pop. rear window driver side completely shattered. there is no impact and believe the rear defrost is defective and shorted out causing the rear window to shatter. was not covered under ford extended warranty and dealer wanted $950 to replace.
Turned rear defroster on, heard loud pop from rear defrost and it shattered out back window all in an instant. the vehicle was parked and had recently been started after a cold night.
Drivers side rear window shattered while using defrost. occurred while vehicle was not moving and parked. a visual inspection was made to insure that no foreign object was the cause. shards of glass was noted covering the back seat and floorboard. this could be a major safety issue if a child or other person was in the back seat at the time of the incident.
Vehicle fuel pump shuts off while driving due to fuel pump fuse (location #27) burning up in fuse box. after my vehicle shutting down while driving several times, last on the highway, with a total loss of power steering and other safety concerns, i found ford has issued a tsb (tsb 15-0137) with a work around fuse relocation. this is unsatisfactory as this is a known issue to ford, but not the consumer, putting drivers at risk. the fuse at issue, location #27, literally melted and burned up in the socket.
Driver door latch sensor is faulty. door ajar warning on instrument panel will not go off. interior lights stay on and doors will not lock while still or in motion. serious safety issue for my wife while traveling or shopping at might. impairs visibility while night driving and locking car a big security issue.
Recently i took my vehicle in because both driver and passenger seat heaters were "fried" according to the service department. there are multiple people with this same problem. here is a post with some same owners the the same problem. http://www.f150forum.com/f38/heated-seats-problem-please-help-123190/index2/ i was quoted $1900 to fix the seat heaters. in one of the posts the owner stated the seat heater got burning hot. another stated it charred the foam and even the leather. i feel like it is going to take a vehicle to catch fire or even worse someone getting injured from this problem. it is fords problem if this is happening on multiple vehicles and all they are doing is putting in new elements until they fry again. they need to figure the issue out right and see what is causing it to happen. i feel it is a safety issue and a hazard that these problems are occurring. i am not sending this complaint because i want ford to pay for the seat heaters. it is because it is happening to multiple owners and its a safety issue. this issue can be resolved but it seems like my service advisory didn't take this issue seriously.
Airbag passenger light stays on switch selector inoperable. ignition switch does not operate properly intermittent no start.
Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford f-150. the contact stated that there was a burning odor under the hood of the vehicle. the contact looked and found that the cables connected to the battery were burning. the contact took the vehicle to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the battery caused excessive battery corrosion and ate through the positive battery cable. the vehicle's motor also failed. the motor, battery, and battery cables needed to be replaced. the manufacturer stated that the power train was covered under warranty; however, the other repairs were not. the approximate failure mileage was 82,000.
Rear window defroster not working
Back passanger side loud boom window busted when defrost cut on
After traveling about 35 minutes, i parked my truck for about an hour. after returning to my vehicle and pulling away, my truck would barely accelerate. i gave it more gas and a large wrench warning light appeared on my dash and soon disappeared. once it was gone, my speedometer didn't function, the mileage was gone and the air bag disconnect warning light was illuminated. i decided to drive it to my dealership 10 miles away so they could attempt to register a code on their computer as i've had issues with this truck bucking/surging while traveling at highways speeds for 8 months. this is the first time a warning light had illuminated for a problem. in addition to the above issues, i noticed that the signals were not turn off automatically and had to be deactivated manually during turns. after the technician took technical information my vehicle was turned off and on and everything returned to normal. as i mentioned there have been multiple issues with my vehicle and they are getting worse and worse. i see no recalls from ford on this ecoboost engine.
Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford f-150. when the vehicle was started, the brake pedal was depressed but failed to respond. the vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the vacuum pump and wiring harness needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 67,000.
Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford f-150. while driving at 70 mph, the vehicle began to jerk while attempting to accelerate. the contact also stated that the failure occurred during rain weather conditions. the vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the ignition misfired and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 59,000. ......updated 12/17/15 *bf the consumer stated the spark plugs and plugs were replaced. *js
Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford f-150. the contact stated that the vehicle failed to start without warning. the contact mentioned that the failure recurred several times intermittently. the vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed but the failure was unable to be determined. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 7,000.
I have a 2012 f-150 with 44651.5 miles on it. over the past 2 months when i start the truck in the garage the steering makes a terrible noise and when driving there is glitch in the steering off and on. i have taken it to the dealer twice and unable to get it to do this for him. after seeing these statements(complaints) about the problem with steering in the 2012 f-150's i don't feel safe driving mine. the noise occurs when i start the engine and turn the steering wheel however slight, the glitch is felt when driving.
The other day my truck would not start when leaving work at night. i had to get it towed into the ford dealership. the engine would crank over but not start. ford let me know it was a fuse and some components that had melted, that it would need a special part to be ordered in since ford has stated that when this happens it must be located to a different area of the vehicle for safety reasons (fire hazard). i am shocked that there is not a recall about this nor is it covered under my warranty (i have an extended bumper to bumper warranty).
Put truck in drive went to apply brake pedal and there were no brakes, truck kept rolling. very dangerous, this needs to be addressed asap, thankfully i wasn't going fast when this happened. incident happened more than once, went to ford garage to evaluate issue, they concluded electric vacuum pump at fault.
2012 ford f-150 ecoboost came off warranty in april, on july 2nd i started the truck, put it in gear (drive), and had no brakes. there was a grinding noise as if the abs was trying to engage. i had to practically stand on the brake pedal to stop the truck and put it back in park. pumped the brakes a few times and tried it again same thing. i shut off the engine, turned it back on, and let it warm up a few minutes. now it was ok. from then on when the truck started cold it has done this on a regular basis. good thing i found this before i reached any speed, and while there was no cargo in the bed to add inertia. i did some research and reported to ford that the brake vacuum assist pump was likely corroded, and that this was a known issue on 2011-2013 f-150 ecoboost models. they needed a ford technician to make the diagnosis, which i was charged $100 for (to determine that i was right). they also reported a bad fuse for the pump. i am hoping nobody is trying to say that with a bad fuse these pumps will disintegrate in three weeks of summer weather? let's be honest- the bad pump took out the fuse, if the fuse was blown. they estimate a ~$900 repair. i opened a ticket with ford motor company because this event exactly matches nhtsa preliminary investigation item pe15026. people with these trucks or anyone around them could get seriously hurt if the driver cannot react quickly or panics when this part fails, and it is a poorly designed part. apparently this part was re-engineered for 2014 and later models. at the time of this writing i am hoping i can get some help from ford. i am a long time customer and have had no prior issue with the dealership or their service department. this is a manufacturing quality issue, pure and simple. i just wanted to report in order to make sure that this case was included with the others related to pe15026... updated 09/30/15*bf
Electric vacuum pump fails and you loose your power brakes. brake petal gets very hard with little or no braking power to stop. 2012 was the last year to use electric vacuum pump to supply power brakes and then was replaced in 2013 with a belt driven vacuum pump. this is a common failure in the f-150 from 2012 and prior year mdls.
During first startup of the day, the electric vacuum pump makes a terrible noise for approx. 10 seconds as it builds up assist vacuum pressure. the brake pedal becomes hard as a stone with no vacuum assist. this is due to a faulty design with the pump assy. it becomes corroded internally and externally, and the piston inside the cheap housing becomes corroded and the pump will eventually seize. this is definitely a dangerous issue. if the pump seizes, there is not enough vacuum assist coming from the engine to provide enough vacuum pressure to the brake boost system and the pedal becomes hard as a rock to press. this happens every day during first startup in the morning, and start up in the afternoon when the vehicle sits for a long period of time and vacuum pressure depletes. *tr
On march 26, i was driving to work when i pressed my rear defrost button because my mirrors had some ice on them. i started to hear what sounded like a sizzle from the backseat. i turned the button off for a minute or so and then turned it back on. seconds later, the rear window of my truck shattered. it sounded like a gunshot. i contacted ford, and so far they are claiming there is not a problem, even though i see hundreds of people having the same problem with their f150s.
Auxiliary pump for power brakes boost noisy/failure
The electric rack and pinion quick working i was not able to street my vehicle at all i was lucky to be on a straight away i'd i had been in a corner i would have had an accident. *tr
I was driving on residential street during light snow conditions. i turned the rear window defrost on and after 2 minutes i could smell a burning smell and heard a crackling/popping sound coming from the back seat area of my truck cab. i sensed it may be something wrong with the rear defrost so i switched it off. approximately 30 seconds later i heard a loud bang which sounded like it hit the roof of the cab. it sounded like someone dropped a large brick onto my moving vehicle. i was startled and stopped to check if something hit or was thrown at my truck and then i noticed the rear passenger side of the rear power sliding window was shattered. i felt the glass and it was hot even though outside temperatures were about 30 degrees f. there is no way ford should be letting this defect go without a recall and i am shocked that the nhtsa has not put more pressure on ford to make this right. i didn't even know this was a possible problem with using the rear defrost until i checked online and there are thousands of complaints about this issue. my child sits in that rear seat all the time and there are no recalls or notices of the potential for injury, fires, etc. please make ford own up to this problem so people can have peace of mind. ford will not even admit there is a problem and is telling me i have to pay $1100 to fix this safety issue and my vehicle is still under warranty. *tr
Incident occurred on saturday 2-21-15 at or about 3:30pm. the vehicle was traveling at about 30mph when a very loud bang was heard inside vehicle. after pulling over a quick glance around inside the vehicle revealed that the drivers side portion of the 3 piece rear glass of the cab has shattered. the glass remains in place but had "spiderwebed" and is completely shattered. upon inspection on the outside, no signs of impact are visible and the point of origin of the cracks appears to be the upper right hand corner where the glass is covered by the rubber molding. when this happened it was about 25 degrees outside and snowing, all snow had been removed from vehicle prior to driving and the rear de-frost/de-fogger had been run and turned off about 10 mins prior to the incident. a quick internet search reveals that this is a common issue for this glass with the heating elements in these conditions, several other complaints similar or identical to this have been made to this and other organizations as well as there have been several article written on this subject. i placed a call to ford customer service for assistance in replacing the glass as the extended warranty that was purchased through ford (ford esp premium) does not cover glass. i was told by the representative from ford that no assistance would be given as the vehicle is out of the 3/36 bumper to bumper warranty. this is an obvious failure of the design from the factory that ford is aware of. *tr
After pulling in to my driveway, one of the rear windows on my f-150 shattered. while i was driving, i had the rear window defroster on. the window shattered shortly after i got out of the truck and closed the door. after doing some research online, i have come to find that this is a fairly common issue on f-150 trucks equipped with the rear defroster system and 3-piece sliding window. i took the truck in to koons ford of annapolis, maryland and was told that while it is a fairly common issue, ford would likely not cover the repair under warranty, as they hadn't in the past. i was quoted $694 for a replacement. luckily this did not happen while i was driving down the road, like it has for many other people. *tr
On december 19, 2014 at a traffic light the instrument cluster, turn signal and power steering stopped working on my 2012 ford f150. this is after the advance traction warning light came on. i had it towed to a ford dealer. the ford dealer updated and reprogramed the abs module. after getting the vehicle back on december 22 the power steering, turn signal, and instrument cluster problem reoccurred as it was not repaired correctly. i returned the vehicle to the ford dealer on december 22. this time they found a faulty pscm (power steering control module) that was losing communication once hot. they replaced the power steering gear assembly and applicable hardware. this vehicle only had 42,704 miles when this problem occurred.
While parked and warming up, heater fan motor seized up, continued to generate heat and ignited resulting in extensive interior burn and total loss fire. *tr
There was a misfire and no check engine light. this happened 5 times before the computer showed there was an issue. on the third time i had ford install the deflector to keep water away from the turbo chargers. the last time it happened the computer finally showed a check engine light. i took the vehicle to auto zone to have them diagnose it. the computer was showing misfires in 3 cylinders. when i got the vehicle to ford it was only showing one cylinder having had a misfire. based on this, and the fact that the computer didn't register the previous misfires. i feel there is a defect with the computer in my vehicle. ford refuses to address the issue. i know there was an investigation on this, but the misfires have happened when it was not raining or humid, in fact the first misfire happened on a dry day. also, i have had the repairs made based on moisture causing the issue and still have the same problem. please advise. *tr
Vehicle would not start. new wedge on wedge positive battery terminal clamping mechanism completely corroded to dust. possible metal incompatibility? *tr
At a stoplight i activated the rear window defroster. after approximately 30 seconds i heard a sharp large cracking sound. upon investigation i found the driver side rear window was shattered but still in place. no signs of chips from inside vehicle or outside were seen before the incident. after getting back inside the vehicle i noticed the rear defroster was inoperable. *tr
While getting on the highway and accelerating, my truck began to shake and lose power. i took it in to the shop afterwards and they had to replace all spark plugs and 1 ignition coil. after researching this, i found out this has been an issue on several 2011 - 2013 model eco boost. please force a recall, as i do not feel i need to pay for something ford is responsible for. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford f-150. the contact stated that the ignition switch was faulty. the contact stated that when the key was placed in the ignition, it would wiggle as if the opening were loose. also, the contact stated that the vehicle failed to recognize when the key was taken out of the ignition. the vehicle was taken to the dealer. the technician diagnosed that the ignition switch was defective and the ignition cylinder was replaced. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 37,589.
Back sliding window doesn't work, popping sound from the rear end when you accelerate from a stop.
I got into my ford f150 on october 4, 2013 and it wouldn't start. malloy ford had me call a wrecker and pick it up on saturday october 5, 2013 mally ford called me on october 7, 2013 and said my truck was ready. i picked my truck up on october 8, 2013 they told me it was my battery. well on june 2, 2014 my truck wouldn't start again. i called malloy that evening and left a message telling them to call me. i received a phone call from them on tuesday june 3, 2014 asking me questions about my truck. they tried to me that i didn't drive it very much that was making my battery drain. they said you have a 2012 vehicle with only 13,000 miles on it. it don't matter how many miles you have on a vehicle, it should start. so i drive my truck in on june 4, 2014 at malloy ford and leave it. i had the battery charged the day before so i could drive it in the next morning and leave it so they could look at it while i was at work. malloy calls me that day and tells me my trucks ready, that it was my battery. how can you have a vehicle that has now had 3 batteries in it go bad. something isn't right. something is draining my battery down. i would really like this problem to be solved. *tr
May 13, 2014, 0630 hrs. temp 55 degrees f. while i was leaving for work, i pressed the rear defrost button as the morning dewpoint was high and condensation was heavy on the glass. the light on the defrost button did not illuminate, so i pressed a second time. there was a delay, but the light finally came on as advertised. i drove approx 5 miles to the local fuel stop when i noticed a slight burning smell from the rear cabin area. i parked the truck, and looked around but found no evidence of something burning. i stepped out of the truck and as i started to walk away from the vehicle, i heard a loud "bang", which scared me. it sounded as if something fell from the sky and hit the top of the truck. i looked around, and then opened the right rear door. the burning smell was more prominent, and i then noticed that the 'bang" was my right rear window pane shattering. the whole right rear pane had become extremely hot, and it shattered. there seems to be an issue with this heating/defrost system that needs rectified immediately. my youngest child could have had this window blow right into her had she or anyone else been sitting in the rear cab at that time. in addition, the possibility of the window blowing outward into oncoming traffic could also be a major issue for many different reasons. this needs addressed as soon as possible. *tr
