Problems with 2006 Ford F-150 ENGINE

On average, the 2006 Ford F-150 starts to “feel” problems with the ENGINE and its various aspects after 98 561 miles.

My f150 2006 is getting a low oil pressure message. i took it to several mechanics and they all said that i need a new engine. one changed the favors crankshaft and oil pump. it ran for about three months. after that i begin to have the same error message, low oil pressure. what can i do?

My truck is making a chain slapping noise only when i first start it after it sits for several hrs. it sounds like their is slack in the timing chain. i know that the chain tensioners fail on this model. please help as i love my truck and i don't wanna loose it. because it only happens when i start the vehicle and then immediately goes away, it was stationary when it started the noise. i'm just afraid that if it keeps on slapping, it will damage the plastic runners and possibly have a chain come off while it's in motion.

This problem is related to ford 5.4 liter triton v8 24 valve engines and frequent failures of the exhaust manifolds. a search of online literature from automotive experts and mechanics report an unusual number of these manifolds warping, cracking, and breaking the mounting studs. repairs are very expensive, in the range of $1000 - $2000 per manifold. last fall 2018, my 2006 f-150 5.4 triton, with only 83,000 miles, began leaking exhaust from the right side manifold. i took it to a ford dealer for repairs. (some independent repair shops stated they will not work on these ford model manifolds anymore.) the total cost to replace the manifold was over $1800. the parts and materials were only about $300. there was a lot of labor involved because 6 of 8 mounting studs had to removed and replaced. the dealer also recommended replacing the left side manifold because the mounting studs on that side were showing signs of impending failure. in fact, some of the studs may be broken already, but the left manifold is not yet leaking, so i did not replace the left manifold at that time. i am a retired mine engineer/manager. i was heavily involved in the maintenance of trucks and equipment. i believe there is a design problem in these manifolds and/or the heads they mount on. (these are the heads that prompted the 5.4 triton spark plug settlement.)

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 ford f-150. required oil and maintance services at 3,000 mile intervals were done since he purchased the truck and the engine went out. the contact stated that the check engine indicator flashed. denny menholt ford (50 ford ln, butte, mt 59701, (406) 494-6333) diagnosed that the engine assembly needed to be replaced. the dealer stated that there were no engine recalls to provide a recall remedy. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 54,000. *bf*jb

Tl* the contact owned a 2006 ford f-150. after the contact parked the vehicle in the driveway, flames were seen coming from the engine compartment approximately five hours later. the fire department was called to the home and extinguished the flames. a fire report was filed. the vehicle was destroyed along with two other vehicles that were parked in the driveway. the cause of the fire was not determined. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the local dealer was not notified. the failure mileage was 120,000.

Have a slight misfire and called all my local shops and no shop will change the plugs on a f-150 with a 5.4l triton motor. they said it's well known that all the spark plugs will snap off in the block. i called the dealer and they want $1000 to change them. while in all other cars and trucks it's $50-$100 job. researching this online it seems this happens to every ford that had the 5.4l triton engine. why is there no recall? i can't afford $1000 to change my spark plugs. i'm a small business owner and this is beyond my means currently. i emailed ford and they didn't seem to acknowledge it being a known issue. yet every mechanic shop will and there are thousands of cases of this issue all over the internet.

At 9:20 monday morning 6/25/18 my 2006 f-150 had been sitting stationary, unoccupied and turned off for 3 and half hours. i was waken up by my wife telling me my truck was on fire. the fire had breached through the hood and contained to the engine compartment. i had no prior trouble to the operation of my truck that would indicate a problem. the fire destroyed entire front of truck.

Air conditioning condensation drips down into #4 cylinder causing a misfire

Bought a used ford f 150 with 65700 miles in april 2011. after 7 years and only putting on 34700 miles there is a loud ticking coming from the engine. it has gotten so bad that the truck engine looses power and when it does have some power it feels like the whole front shakes as if the tire is coming off. ford states the engine should be replaced or some other problems that seem to be inherent with the 5.4 and no way is ford even wanting to fix

Motor is missing and the codes are p0345, p0349 and p0171

My truck caught on fire yesterday. due to a heat shield missing over passenger side catalytic converter caused the plastic grommets that hold the sound barrier material on the floorboard to drop and hang on top of the catalytic converter until the material caught on fire. my insurance company is still investigating how the catalytic converter heat shield was missing. less than a month after i bought the truck and it was used, they had to do service work on it because i purchased the truck with a broken front coil spring and the transmission dipstick tube had rotted. even though the truck was missing a heat shield, i believe there should be any kind of flammable material near the catalytic converter just in case a heat shield happens to rot and fall off or for any reason the heat shield is missing .the fire traveled through the material almost to the top of my engine. after i got the flames out it was still smoldering and smoldered up into a space i could not reach to nor see. i also believe a fire retardant system should be created to douse flames in a section of an engine compartment that cannot be reached and would probably save countless lives property and invested money into vehicle and other things that a vehicle on fire could destroy.

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 ford f-150. while driving various speeds, the vehicle started to misfire. the contact noticed carbon build up on the spark plug head, which caused it to cement onto the engine. the vehicle was taken to ford of honolulu (1370 n king st, honolulu, hawaii, 96817, phone number: (808) 824-3981) where it was diagnosed that a "crappy" design was on the spark plug that needed to be replaced. the dealer replaced all four spark plugs, but fractured one of them. the contact was informed that he would have to pay to replace the fractured spark plug. the spark plug was not replaced due to the replacement fee. the manufacturer was contacted and referred the contact to nhtsa. the approximate failure mileage was 135,000.

Ford f150 xlt 2006 should have a mandatory safety recall for the fuel control module. this is clearly a design defect and a major safety concern. i was driving down vt116 (a hilly, winding 2 lane country highway with no shoulder) in the rain at about 40mph when my truck started to buck and lose power. there was no place to pull over, so i put my hazards on and tried to limp it to a safe place to pull over. the engine stalled and i lost steering and braking power on a curve. i applied the brakes manually and wrestled the steering wheel (which no longer had any power assist). with major difficulty, i was able to bring the truck to a controlled stop. i was then able to restart the engine, limped along at 15mph, bucking and stalling 3 more times before getting to a safe place to pull over. this is the second time i have had my fcm replaced (prior was 1/5/2013) and the second time i almost crashed my truck because of this defect. the previous time was january 2013 on a mountain road in winter on snow. if i was towing my boat on the interstate and lost all power, i would probably have been killed along with anyone around me. why is it a design defect? because this electronic component is installed in a weather-exposed area above the spare tire and is not corrosion-proof. in any rust belt state (or a place exposed to salt), the case will corrode, exposing the circuit board to water, causing the unit to fail. why is it a safety concern? because when the fcm fails, the engine will stall, causing a loss of power to the steering and braking systems. nhtsa should force ford to do a mandatory recall and redesign this poorly designed part. even the replacement parts fail after a few years. considering how many f150's are on the road and how many of them carry or tow heavy loads, i'd say this should be a top priority for both ford and nhtsa. recall!

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 ford f-150. while driving 45 mph, the front of the vehicle shook violently, the engine nearly stalled and lost power repeatedly, and the check engine indicator illuminated intermittently. the vehicle also braked independently. the vehicle was taken to an uncertified mechanic who diagnosed that the engine was having multiple misfires, and did not know how to repair the vehicle. the contact also called a dealer who was extremely rude and did not assist. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the contact was informed that they would not assist because the claims deadline had been missed. the approximate failure mileage was 128,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 ford f-150. while driving various speeds or when the vehicle was started, the reduced power engine warning indicator illuminated. the vehicle was taken to the dealer (mullinax ford of central florida, 1551 e semoran blvd, apopka, fl 32703) where it was diagnosed that the coolant pipe needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was contacted at 800-392-3673 and stated that the contact needed to call nhtsa. a case number was not provided. the approximate failure mileage was 134,600.

Was driving my 2006 f-150 over a mountain pass in canada. there was compact snow and ice on the roadway and i was traveling with other vehicles around me at approximately 40 mph. the vehicles ahead of me began to brake, i as well tried to brake only to find my truck had lost power and was no longer running. i had lost power to my brakes and steering. this caused my truck to begin sliding on the snow and ice and i was unable to control my vehicle. the cars around me were slowing and stopping and i could not. i began to fish tail in both directions while trying desperately to control my truck with no brakes or power steering, i eventually did a complete 360 degree spin and somehow managed to get the truck under control with out rolling over and into the ditch or smashing into the other vehicles around me. when i came to a stop my truck was not running and the dash lights were on. i placed the transmission into drive and restarted the truck without issue and continued on without issue. this is the second time this has happened with this truck, the first time i was on a residential street and i was able to just coast to a stop and restarted the truck. this last incident on the mountain pass has confirmed to me that i will not own another ford as i have researched this problem to find that this is a common issue with ford trucks. i am certain this has caused major accidents if not deaths and the fact there are no error codes left behind from the events to verify this has happened we may never know. the fact it has happened to me twice and once only a miracle a serious accident didn't occur i am done with the ford motor company. *tr

I was driving on the road when the "engine failsafe warning' light came on. the entire engine shut down. no power at all. very hard to stop and steer. i nearly got into an accident. another time i was entering parking lot when it happened. i had the throttle body replaced to fix the problem. but shutting off the engine on a warning while driving is very dangerous. some internet research indicates this is not a lone occurrence.

Took truck in for routine 100,000 maintenance and tune up. spark plug stuck in the cylinder head and ended up getting charged $3,500 for the repair. i am reading online of how widespread this problem is and ford should recall these spark plugs and take care of their customers. i will never purchase another ford in my lifetime if they don't do something about this.

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 ford f-150. while driving 8 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning after a sharp right turn. the check engine indicator illuminated. the vehicle was taken to be repaired, but the issue recurred. the manufacturer was made aware of the issue. the failure mileage was 158,818.

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 ford f-150. the contact stated that the vehicle would shook whenever the vehicle was idling. the shaking increased during acceleration. the contact took the vehicle to a dealer who was unable to identify the cause of the failure, but informed the contact that the shaking was a common issue with the year, make, and model. the vehicle was not repaired and the failure recurred. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 111,000.

Power steering hose rust and leaking-transmission hoses rusted and leaking - spark plug breaking off when having them replaced

Vehicle jerked when driving down highway when you reach 45 to 50 mph. i would let off gas and then give it gas again and it would not jerk. check engine light appeared so i took it to ford dealership and they run a check . told me i need another motor. this truck has 154000miles. it has not overheated.

Took in for a tune up. broke off 7 spark plugs. got piece in engine. had to take engine apart. tune up was to be $535. now it is $2300.00

Truck has ~116000 miles. engine randomly dies while in motion (15 - 50 mph) and while idling at a stop. no power brakes or steering until engine is restarted. has occurred driving down the highway and in the city. mainly occurred going straight (not turning). immediately restarts. no engine codes or check engine light. cause unknown. throttle body replaced without fixing condition. "wrench" symbol on driver display has been on for a while but condition just started.

On 3 occasions my vehicle ,over 4 months, has had a complete engine failure. this occurred most recently while i was exiting the interstate .when the engine shuts down so does the dash and brake lights, it also stops power steering and brakes. this time by reacting quickly i was able to put the vehicle in neutral and restart ,after turning key to off position first.

I have a 2006 f-150 v8 4.6 the heater coil in the truck has failed. and the water pump also

Cylinder #4 blew the spark plug out, stripping the threads as it went. this is the 2nd cylinder to do this in 6 months. while driving at 45 mph.

Morning of july 23,2015, i was driving about 25 mpr speed when number three spark plug blow out of the cylanderhead on my f-150 triton v8. took it to the local machanic shop walton's. three hours later, walton's had to replace and resleeve number three cylanderhead and replaced electrical sparkplug wire, plus replaced all eight spark plugs. all at a cost of $543.00. not only this happened to me but walton's stated that i was the 10th person this week this has happened too. i presented the part to my local ford dealership where we bought the truck (hall's ford motor company) brand new in 2006 and paid cash to the sum of $30,000.00. i asked them if they know of this problem with triton v8's. they stated they did but no know recalls and they too had several repairs come in for the same thing in the pass week. they also stated that the ford motor company was aware of this matter but never let there customers know about this problem yet because there was no recall on file to let them know. this thing where the spark plugs come flying out of an engine can be very hazards, it could cause a crash or even give a person a heart attack because the truck sounds like world war iii going off under the hood and it may even start a fire. this matter needs to be taken care of by ford.

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 ford f-150. the contact stated that the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for routine maintenance. while at the independent mechanic, the contact was notified that seven of the eight spark plugs in the vehicle were fractured and needed to be replaced. the contact stated that one of the fractured spark plugs remained in the cylinder head. the mechanic stated that the cylinder head had to be removed from the engine to remove the fractured spark plug. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure; however, the contact was not offered a remedy for the failure. the failure mileage was 84,000.

2006 f-150 lost all power function while traveling down the interstate. i lost power steering and brakes. the cause is a corrosive fuel pump control module. after taking with my local ford dealer i was made aware that this is major safety issue and one that fmc refuses to recognize. this incident could have resulted in a major accident. i was lucky enough to be able to signal to the cars around me that i was having trouble - however i was still almost rear ended twice before being able to pull off to the side of the road. *tr

Vehicle started missing and bucking. brought into mechanic and was told this is a very common problem with triton 5.4l engine. needs spark plug change and chances are they will break off in engine while changing (which 5 out of 8 did). total cost a shameful $800 (estimate was between $600-$1200). mechanic pulled out many prior invoices from owners with the exact same issue. the spark plugs in these engines should be recalled. *tr

Engine had blown a plug out about 300 miles ago on the number 3 was repaired with repair kit new plug and coil was put on. was traveling started up hill engine began to miss drove 20 miles to destination had truck tested at advance auto parts readout stated misfire on cylinder 1 and 3 and bad coil on 3. replaced coil 3 again took to mechanic his computer read out was number 8 coil was bad replaced it engine continued to miss took it to the mechanic he changed all the plugs the 2nd plug on drivers side was loose and ready to blow out and he took the number 3 plug out that had been replaced prior the whole bottom of plug was melted could have resulted in a fire looked down in engine with camera the piston was destroyed. this problem is from the factory installed plug blowing out and fragments going into engine. now i have to replace my engine 2500 out of my pocket d/t poor head design ford is well aware of this problem and refuses any assistance ford actually has excluded blown plug repair from their warranty. when you purchase a new vehicle you expect to get more than 106000 miles. *tr

Went to stop for traffic light applied the brakes and vehicle took off///////slammed on brakes to try to stop and slammed in park .came with in inches of crashing into car in front of me. today is sept.1st have not driven truck again////// call ford corp. they will not pay to check out truck. at 3100 miles had to replace tires. orig. had dry rot,,,,,, *tr

Engine started making a loud noise upon inspection of engine found that the back spark plug on passenger side had blown out from head and of course stripped the treads from the head the spark plugs are the ones that came from factory they have never been removed or replaced vehicle was purchased new after reviewing information on the internet this seems to be a major problem with fords 4.6 and 5.4 engine as well as resulting in fires and considering ford makes a repair kit. if this has effected this many vehicle shouldn't ford foot the bill. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 ford f-150. the contact stated that while driving uphill, there was a engine misfire. the vehicle was taken to a dealer where the vehicle was repaired. the failure recurred. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 50,000.

I was driving down us 281(busy 3 lane highway) in san antonio and the engine shut off causing me to coast to a stop in the middle of traffic. once i got off of the road, the engine started up like nothing was wrong. after i inspected the fluids and saw everything checked out, i got back on the highway only to have the engine shut off again. i called ford to see if there was an issue reported or a recall, and there was nothing. i found over 300 complaints on various forums by typing in --2006 f150 failsafe--in the search engine. i think this is a real safety issue that ford needs to address before someone gets killed on the road. When stopped at a red light my engine began to rev. at very high rpm's and the tires burned out when i shifted the transmission into neutral. i purchased this truck in dec. 2013 and this was approx. the 7th incident of sudden acceleration. it seems to only happen when stooped or slowing down. any help in this matter would be deeply appreciated. thanks in advance. *tr

The engine began to tick on top. later it began to tick on the bottom. the engine light came on and i had it checked. the code said it was a cam sensor. as it turned out the engine was not getting the proper amount of oil due to a clogged a oil port restriction. end result had to replace the engine. while at the service center another truck came in with the same problem with similar mileage. now my son who has a 2005 ford f150 is experiencing the same issues with his truck with 96000 miles that's three that i know of. *tr

I brought my truck in to my local ford dealer because the check engine light came on. it is a 2006 f150 4.6l - after his inspection, the mechanic stated that the bottom of the #2 spark plug (manufacture installed) had disintegrated and fell into the head causing so much damage to the #2 cylinder that i have to replace the entire engine at a cost of over $6,000 plus tax. it will take over a week to fix and i do not have another vehicle. i would like ford to reimburse me for the expense. i have written to their "customer care"( [xxx]) department, but have had no helpful or satisfactory results. this is a known issue as ford has issued a tsb and developed a tool to assist with the removal of faulty spark plugs. *tr

While driving the ford 2006 f150 it just started running sluggish and stopped. i was able to get off the side of the road. *tr

Went to start truck and engine would crank but would not fire. i tried the starting fluid test to see if it was an ignition problem or fuel problem. gave a little shot of starting fluid into the intake and then tried to start. motor acted like it was going to start but never started beings i didn't give it enough starting fluid to start because i'm not a fan of using it. with that i eliminated the ignition had to be fuel. i got on the internet and searched no start problem for 2006 f-150 and found a you tube video of the fuel pump control module rusting out. went out and dropped spare tire and took the control module off the cross member and noticed the hole corroded through the housing just like the video. i got the upgraded part from a ford dealer for $163 and installed. runs fine now. my biggest complaint is ford knows there's a problem since the have came out with an upgraded control module so why isn't this a recall? i live in a state that temperatures in the winter months can be below 0 degrees fahrenheit and drive an hour one way to work, this could have happened when i was on the road in extreme cold, could of had my two children with me broke down on the side of the road and cold out. luckily it happened at home but still it was 4 degrees out and laying under my truck taking the module off was not very pleasant. think this is something that ford needs to do something about. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 ford f-150. the contact stated that the vehicle was started and the engine exhibited a loud noise. additionally, the contact smelled a burning odor. the contact took the vehicle to a local mechanic, who stated that the spark plug had melted due to the heat from the head gasket. there were no repairs made to the vehicle. the failure mileage was 40,000.

While approaching a stop the truck gauges started going crazy. truck stalled but restarted with gauges still acting crazy. all gauges would bottom out and come back up and radio was turning on and off. replaced battery but only stalling issue was resolved. took to local ford dealer but since the truck only does this randomly, they were not able to diagnose the problem. truck runs perfectly but gauges and radio still go on and off making it extremely annoying to drive. very frustrating to know that so many other ford owners have the same problem but no solution has been offered from ford. *tr

When driving home, check engine light started flashing, immediately stopped and had vehicle towed to a well reputable shop for diagnosis and repair. was diagnosed with two fuel injectors failing and needing replaced along with all spark plugs needed replaced. 6 of the 8 plugs snapped in half and needed to be burrowed out on top of it costing $90 per plug drilling out. total for repairs came to $2300. but after repairs were completed i still do not have a running vehicle. the engine starts but oil pressure drops after 5 mins of running. i would love to find a solution to this, if this is common or not. and if so, why is it not recalled? *tr

When i started the truck, a spark plug blew into the head. the mechanic at the ford dealership told me this was a common problem with these trucks. the repair cost me $3,448. to replace the head. if ford is aware of this problem, the vehicles should be recalled and the problem corrected. my family was left stranded 7 hours away from home, had to rent a vehicle to get home and then two weeks later, had to return to dealership and pick up the truck. so stressful and expensive. just glad we were in a town when this happened! *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 ford f-150. the contact stated during routine maintenance on the vehicle she was informed that the spark plugs were fractured. the vehicle was taken to a private mechanic who repaired the vehicle. the manufacturer was contacted about the failure. the failure mileage was 71,000.

2006 ford f-150. consumer requests reimbursement for vehicle repairs. *smd the consumer stated he was quoted a price of $447 to replace the spark plugs. however, when he received the bill, the price had doubled.

Ford has an ongoing problem with the 2006-2008 f150. they have faulty sparkplug that when they need changedirections snap. this results in them having to retap the motor and put different spark plugs in which they charge $400/spark plug that snaps. the part that snaps falls into the motor that's which it is so expensive. ford has known about the problem for years because they made sure to get new spark plugs as soon as there were issues. numerous people including myself have called ford and complained but they never do anything about it. i hope that you will. *tr

While replacing the spark plugs, every plug broke off and was very difficult to remove. my mechanic got out the first seven, but the eighth would not come out. it subsequently fell into my engine, causing it to seize. i should have gotten another 100,000 miles out of this truck! *tr

The vehicle was being driven at 35 mph and simply stopped running. vehicle could not be re-started. towed to repair shop. the mechanic tested the fuel system and determined the fuel pump had burned out. the fuel pump was replaced at a cost of $552.05. one day after repairs were completed the check engine warning light was activated and the code revealed a fuel system issue. the vehicle was immediately taken back to the same repair shop. the fuel pressure was operating at 90 psi. after several unsuccessful visits, it was eventually determined that the fuel pump control module was severely corroded and malfunctioning. the "pot" metal has been completely corroded and there is an approximate 1 inch diameter hole leading directly to the electric panel. the control module was replaced for an additional $399.89. the design of this module using "pot" metal and simply bolting to the steel axle is ridiculous. this item should be an immediate recall within the "salt belt" areas of north america. i have documented receipts from the repair shop and have kept the original fuel module as well. ford motor company should recognize this issue as an obvious re-call item and be held responsible for associated repair bills. *tr
