In april 2011, while driving our ford f150, model year 2000, along a country two-lane road in a rural county in virginia, at approximately 40 mph, the gas tank dropped onto the road causing a large hole in the tank and the loss of nearly 3/4 tank of gasoline. i was able to brace the tank up with a rope long enough to get to our son's home a short distance away and lucky enough not to run out of gas until i pulled into his yard. there was no injury but sparks flew from the tank after it dropped onto the road. fortunately there was no fire. i had a mechanic replace the tank and the strap and have had the truck back into the shop twice to repair leakage and had to replace the neck assembly as well. we were made aware of the recall on our model f150 and took all receipts to the local dealership. we were told that this truck was not included in the recall and the dealer refused reimbursement. *kb
While driving my 2000 ford f150 pickup, heard crashing sound and heavy scraping. was able to pull over to side of road and found that the gas tank had dropped from below the vehicle causing a gouge in the gas tank which was dumping the gas onto the road. this happened april 7, 2011. fortunately i was alone in the car and there were no injuries. but there could have been!!! *tr

I was driving down a city street and hear a loud metal scraping sound coming from under my truck. i immediately pulled over and stopped. when i looked under my truck my gas tank was dragging on the ground. the front metal bracket had rusted through and broken. there was gas leaking from the tank and the fire department responded. there was no fire. to say the least this is outrageous and totally unacceptable for any car or truck. i have seen many other reports about this problem with this truck. why hasn't there been a recall? i was lucky there wasn't a fire. someone will eventually be killed by this default. *tr
I have a 2000 ford f150 and i heard that there is being an investigation into the gas tank straps rusting through and dropping the tank. this happened to my truck causing the tank to drop to the road and drag, also causing the tank to spring a leak (needing to be replaced). the tank, straps, vent tube, etc. were replaced at a cost of near $700.00. i was wondering what steps if any i can take to get reimbursed for this cost. thank you updated 08/05/11 *bf the consumer stated both of the straps were corroded. updated 08/15/11 *tr
I was driving my ford f150 pick up truck and heard something like i dropped an exhaust pipe. luckily i was driving slowly about 20-25 mph. i stopped and got out to see what had happened. my gas tank that i had just filled the other day fell off. both straps broke and i was dragging the tank on the ground. i had it towed to my house for repair. after noticing that the fuel fill pipe had rusted off near the tank and both straps had failed. i decided it was to much for myself to repair. i believe i need a new gas tank and new straps. fuel was thrown up under my truck. i contacted ford but they were of little help. probably not going to buy another one. a ten year old truck this shouldn't happen to! there was no fire but i'm really glad i didn't have my grandson in the truck or that i was driving down the highway! *tr

Driving down the road at approx 45 mph when the front end of the gas tank fell on the road. when truck was placed on tow truck it was obvious the straps had broken holding the gas tank onto the truck. due to the gas tank falling to the ground other parts were damaged as well.
Approximately (5:45 pm) on mon.,1- 24-11. i was coming home had fueled up my truck (then at 3/4s full) for week when i noticed a scraping/dragging sound coming from rear of the truck just after crossing a double rr-track on a paved two lane road. nowhere to pull over after a wet snowfall on narrow shoulder, i put on 4-ways and crept to the nearest driveway at a drugstore. i exited truck to check out the noise, to my shock i saw my forward end of fuel tank was on the ground and spilling fuel. i called 911, police and fire (equipped to stabilize the fuel spill) and a tow company were sent to assist. a report was made by the local police. the truck was then taken by my request to the ford dealership where it had been purchased new. next day: the dealership quoted an astronomical price for replacement of damaged parts & labor (1600-2000). after research had the truck towed to another facility for the repairs which were completed the same week by that thu. evening. i do have the defective parts in my possession (fuel tank straps). this was out of pocket (except for the original tow; insurance reimbursed 50.) had to barrow and refuel a vehicle as well to get to work. due to some ford motor co. connections through my business clients i have received a phone call from their corporate offices for which i had a 30 min. conversation with a rep. who needed a week to research my verbal complaint. this person did try to call me back on thu.2-10-11 but i was not available (due to my work hours). in the first phone call i spoke of my knowledge of ford receiving a letter from (odi) back in 9-24-10. if they knew why wasn't this problem checked if my truck had been in & out of a ford service facility the last 3 mo.'s of 2010. i made it known that i would be filing a complaint with your administration and i would be warning everyone i know for fear that this could happen to others. i also told them that i hoped that ford motor co. would issue a recall. *tr updated 08/01/11 *bf updated 08/02/11

I just filled my gas talk and was heading up my driveway in my 2000 ford f150. when the gas strap rusted out and broke. the weight of the tank forced the other strap to break and my tank came flying out the back end. the tank hit the receiver hitch and slit a hole in the tank spilling gas everywhere. one spark and i would have certainly been killed. i have read several other complaints online about the same problem. *tr

as of 12-10-2010 i was at work and was walking toward the truck and notice the gas tank was hanging.i called my boss and told him the situation.so i took a rachet strap and strap it up.drove over sixty miles home to local auto store and picked up new straps.as i was replacing straps i notice a strong odor of gas.also when replacing these straps that i notice alot of rust on gas tank where gas straps were placed.wanted to take a wire brush to it but was afraid of the wire brush putting a hole through it.also maybe a spark and kaboom.besides that took the truck to dealership and service advisor came to us and told us that gas tank has 3 holes in tank around front strap and is to dangerous to drive.he said that he would get ahold of ford and more than likely they would put us in a rental and fix tank.he comes back and said they would not fix.he told us that we have a case.so called ford and they told me that the only way they would fix the tank if it would drop to the ground.i see that as a personal safety issue for me and people behind me.ford showed no concern and that bothered me.but since the tank dropped i have smelt gas and the dealership noticed the corrosion and rust under the straps and ford still did not care.
Tl*the contact owns a 2000 ford f150. the contact noticed that the filler neck was leaking gasoline similar to nhtsa campaign id number: 06e056000 ( fuel system, gasoline). the fuel tank strap was also corroded which added to the failure. the dealer or manufacturer had not been notified nor was the vehicle diagnosed or repaired. the current mileage was approximately 210,000. the failure mileage was approximately 202,000. the vin was unavailable.
After i filled up with gas, i smelled gas. after this happened a couple of times, i noticed gas dripping from the tank. upon inspection, i noticed that the leak was near the filler neck, but the root cause was that one of the tank straps was completely rusted away, the other is severely corroded; the leak at the neck is because the weight of the tank is being supported by the neck. i see that several dozen cases have occurred where the tank has fallen out of the trucks going down the road, and the "crack staff" at nhtsa has been "studying" this since september to see if this is a "safety concern", but they are either too inept, too corrupt, or too lazy to do their jobs. this is the same lack of concern for american consumers that allowed people to die from the toyota sudden acceleration issue. take you r time guys, you are only playing roulette with human lives!!!!! i will quote [xxx] "shame on nhtsa for not doing your job." i hope the new chairs of energy and commerce and oversight and reform have more respect for human life than the last ones. if so, nhtsa may be compelled to do its job! information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr
Rear fuel tank strap rusted through on 2000 ford f-150.*tr
Pulling into a parking space, i heard a loud bang and a dragging sound. i got out of my vehicle to see what i had backed into, but couldn't seen anything. i went to get back into my vehicle and heard someone say, "something is hanging under your truck". when i got out and looked, i saw the gas tank laying on the ground. upon inspection, both straps had broken and the fuel lines were the only thing holding it to the truck. this occurred only once so far. the truck is a 2000 f150 with 150,000 miles on it. i replaced the two straps after purchasing them from a dealer. i was shocked to see that a 24 gallon tank was held up by two small metal straps attached to the frame by a bolt on one side, and a twist lock (if you can call it that) on the other. i hope ford has found a better way to attach these on their newer vehicles, especially 4-wheel drive. *tr

Accelerated from intersection; heard noise; thought was exhaust pipe dropped and was being dragged; smelled fuel; stopped and saw that fuel tank had fallen onto the road; tank more than 3/4 full had split and was leaking fuel; called 911 for fire department and police; fire department lifted tank and fuel gushed out; fire department used a wedge of wood to plug tank as good as possible though tank was nearly empty by that time; tow truck arrived; towed truck to dealer; cleaned up more about 19 gallons of fuel; will discuss repairs with dealer tomorrow; assumption is that a new tank, straps and possible fuel line will be needed. do not believe police made a report since no accident or injuries occurred. updated 12/08/10 *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2000 ford f-150. the contact was driving approximately 30 mph when sparks were seen igniting from under the vehicle. the contact found that both fuel tank straps were corroded and fractured, causing the fuel tank to drag with the vehicle. the dragging caused a large hole in the fuel tank as gasoline began to spill from the tank. the contact was unaware of how much gasoline had spilled but stated that the tank was filled to capacity prior to the failure. the fire department reported to the scene and the fuel tank was completely removed from the vehicle. the vehicle was towed to a local repair shop where the contact was advised that the fuel tank assembly, fuel tank straps, fuel pump assembly, fuel tank filler neck assembly, fuel tank valve, fuel line, and the fuel tank pressure sensor would all need to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the contact referenced a concurrent investigation under nhtsa action number: ea11006 (fuel system, other:storage:tank assembly fuel system, other:storage:tank assembly:mounting fuel system, gasoline:storage:tank assembly:mounting) which could possibly have been related to the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 140,000.

My brother and i each purchased new 2000 ford f-150 pickups in june of 2000. on august 27, 2010 i notices that the rear strap attaching my fuel tank to the vehicle had broken. i immediately replaced the badly rusted and broken strap without any loss of fuel or further damage. i inspected my brothers fuel tank and his rear strap is likely to fail. he will replace and avoid the same failure i experienced. *tr

Just turned off hwy onto gravel road. felt a jolt and thought i had a flat tire. pulled over and upon inspection noticed the fuel tank straps had broken and i was dragging the fuel tank down the road. due to being on gravel there were no sparks and no fire. tank was ruined and had to replace that along with both straps. check engine light will not re-set since the incident as well.
A strap which holds on the gas tank on my 2000 ford f150 broke while i was driving and dragged appx. 300 yards, causing about 10 gallons to leak out on road. the local fire dept. had to be dispatched, and i had to replace the entire tank and strap system at a cost of over $800.00. the local ford dealer that did the repair did not mention anything about a known problem. updated 08/04/11 *bf the consumer stated the strap furthest to the front was the only strap that broke and caused the forward part of the tank to drag. the break appeared to be in the center of the strap on the bottom facing the road. the entire metal part of the strap was extremely corroded. the rear was similar, but seemed to have added support from the fill nozzle and cap assembly. also two years prior, the lowering spare tire cable was corroded and broke while driving, which caused the tire to drop to the ground. updated 08/15/11 *tr
I purchased my 2000 ford f150 from an auction on june 14, 2010. on june 22nd less than a week after being md inspected, one of the two straps holding my gas tank broke due to excessive rust. the rust had not been evident, it was covered by a plastic outer covering on the strap. fortunately my step-son was only driving 15 mph (just turned onto the main street) when it happened. there was no fire, but it could have been deadly. *tr
My 2000 ford f-150 fuel tank fell out of the vehicle this past june 2010. the vehicle was purchased new and was dealer under coated to prevent rusting. the tank at the time was full of fuel and was within minutes of having been traveling down the freeway. the vehicle was parked for a short period of time before the fuel tank fell to the ground. on inspection the forward strap was missing on the tank was on the ground front first. if this would have happened while driving on the freeway it would have surely ended in a fire. *tr

have a 2000 ford f150 had tank filled with gas and was driving down road when gas tank fell of found that both straps that held tank had rusted through thankfully we were not moving fast or it is hard to tell what would have happened there is only 125000 mile on vehicle and has been maintained feel that an incident like this is uncalled for that there should have been a safer way of mounting since vehicle had even been rustproofed we are thankfull that this did not happen a high speed for we feel that something grave could have happened to us and anyone behind us if and when it may have exploded. *tr
