We have classified the 163 complaints from 2016 Ford Explorer about STEERING into the following categories.
This will be the second time in a couple of years that my steering on my car has just quit while i was driving it. i was, luckily, sitting in a parking lot, parked. when i put my car in drive and turned my wheel my steering ability was suddenly was gone and i had the "hill assist disabled" light to come on, "advance trac control light" flashed, and the steering loss light came on. i had no capability to turn my wheel without putting enormous effort. it's as if all my power steering died. this is the second time this has happened.
Tl* the contact owns a 2016 ford explorer. while the contact's wife was driving in reverse, the steering wheel seized. she had to use excessive strength to turn the steering wheel. the vehicle was driven to columbia ford of tennessee (115 s james campbell blvd, columbia, tn 38401, (931) 388-2463) where it was diagnosed that a new rack and pinion needed to be installed. the vehicle was not repaired, but planned to be repaired in a few days. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was unknown.
The steering failure light came on about 2 weeks ago and i brought to dealer. they said it was not the steering but the battery putting out the wrong voltage and caused the sensor to come on. today i actually lost steering on the vehicle while driving about 30 miles on a local street. the street curved and i could not turn the wheel. the steering fault light came on and car said that the terrain assist and hill assist was disabled (was not using). i was able to put my hazards on, and struggle with the steering to pull over. i only have 42000 miles on this vehicle and have had numerous electrical problems with this car, including replacing the apim. i have a 16 year old, that just started driving with me in this car, and i do not think it is safe. i truly believe there is some wiring problem or electrical problem that ford is ignoring. i see many people posting this same dangerous steering fault issue, and it not getting fixed.
Wife was driving vehicle and started to hear grinding noise when turning. she thought it was out of power steering fluid. she did research and found out there is not power steering that it is electronic control. ford knowing there is issues with earlier years that they had recalls on 2011-2013 model years. before it completely went out. drove it to our mechanic to repair.
I took it to ford for a recall on a suspension issue and they found that the steering rack needed replaced as well as it was making a clunking noise. i do recall a clunking noise was made sporadically when turning into parking spaces prior to taking it to ford. i find it odd that a vehicle that is 3 years old is having such an issue.
Steering fault alarm 3 times over 2 weeks, dealer service sees error code c200d, could not say whats wrong, advised to replace steering rack. steering fault happened while driving on highway twice and once backing in driveway. many complaints of this online, ford should be doing a recall to fix. 67886 miles on my vehicle. cost to replace steering rack around $2000.00.
I was driving back to work from my break when i was about to park my car the power steering got locked suddenly. thanks to god i was not in full motion otherwise i would have been messed up every ways. this car is just driving me crazy everyday i notice some kind a stupid noise. i bought this vehicle not too long ago. the dealer knowingly gave me faulty car right next day i took it back to fix the carbonmonoaxide problem and now the steering locked on me.
The explorer had 39,000 miles on it and the rack and pinion needs to be replaced. this car had a 36,000 mile warranty. i contacted ford customer service, asked for an extension of the warranty and for them to cover some or part of this repair, because it is highly unusual for these parts to fail at such a low milage. they said they have no responsibility outside of the 36,000 warrenty. but after i get it fixed i can buy and extended warrenty through them. this repair will cost me 2,400 dollars .
Vehicle is experiencing popping noises when turning the steering wheel left or right also happens while braking the popping is significant enough to feel in the steering wheel as well as in the floor boards on both front passenger and driver. the steering wheel has exhibited extreme vibration enough to make the outside driver review mirror shake. the steering wheel has also been stuck in the left turning position twice while trying to straighten wheels back out.
Steering fault warning came on three times. the third time, steering also froze up and the traction control warning lights came on; i turned off the motor and then back on and the steering worked again. i took it to the dealer and they did an software update. the next day, the warning light came on again. the mechanic read the code for the warning and it is c200d-49.
Brought truck in for diagnosis, problem with power steering. we were told the steering column or rack is failing as well as the gearbox. the truck is only two and half years old should not be happening it only has under 108k miles on it. the repair would cost nearly $2,200. unacceptable! i already have a rebuilt transmission.
The steering has become very difficult and a noise of a 'grating' sound is occurring. this morning i had trouble keeping it straight. the vehicle has less than 50k miles - owned it for about 6 months
While driving, i noticed some 'sticking' or 'jerking' in the steering. also, a grinding sound when turning the wheel, while sitting still or while driving. being memorial day weekend, we headed to ford dealership to drop off for service, on the way to the dealership, the dash warnings started flashing. service advance trac, no hill assist, and service steering assist now. we made it to the dealership, after a scary ride there! 2016 with 65,000 miles. $2500 in repairs. definitely scary, and certainly a safety issue had the steering seized at a high rate of speed.
I was driving down the highway going approx 50 mph when my steering wheel locked up and automatically pulled me towards oncoming traffic. i had to forcefully pull off of the road. we took it to the dealership and they said the epas is bad. from doing research i have learned this is actually a common issue. it was terrifying for me, especially because my 2 yo and 3 month old children were in the vehicle with me when this occurred. there is only 61k miles on this vehicle that we have only had for 7 months. this needs to be recalled before there are fatalities- if there haven't been already!!!
Tl* the contact owns a 2016 ford explorer. while driving 25 mph, the steering wheel became difficult to turn and made an abnormal noise. the vehicle was taken to balise toyota of warwick (located at 1400 post rd, warwick, ri 02888, (401) 352-5911) where it was diagnosed that the inner tie rod assembly needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified. the failure mileage was 61,653.
I have had this used car 2 months and it only has 25k on it, the steering column is grinding and feels very tight when driving, almost like your driving on a flat .dealership offered to fix it for $2000.00 '.are you kidding? should be a recall like older years are.
Making a right turn at 20mph on a city street and steering wheel started locking up. found it unerving and difficult to come out of the turn. this caused me to make a dangerous stop in a active intersection.
Tl* the contact owns a 2016 ford explorer. while driving out of a parking lot, a whining sound was heard from the front driver's side wheel. in addition, the steering column made a popping noise. there were no warning indicators illuminated. furthermore, while driving and making left turns, the whining and popping noise occurred. the vehicle was taken to viva ford (located at 5550 n desert blvd, el paso, tx 79912, (915) 834-2800) where it was diagnosed that the front driver and passenger hub assemblies needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred after leaving the dealer. the contact immediately called dealer and she was advised to schedule an appointment. the vehicle was taken back to the dealer but was not diagnosed or repaired due to the vehicle was out of warranty. the manufacturer was notified of the failure and provided a case number: cas21646401-y3n9w3. the approximate failure mileage was 59,500.
Tl* the contact owns a 2016 ford explorer. while driving approximately 50 mph, the steering wheel jerked slightly while turning in either direction. the message "steering failure" suddenly displayed and the power steering malfunctioned, which caused the steering wheel to become extremely difficult to turn. the vehicle was towed to walls ford (2 merrill st, salisbury, ma) where it was diagnosed that the steering rack and gear assembly were faulty and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 43,500. *bf *jb
While driving received a warning light stating, "loss of steering-service advance track". immediately after the warning the steering locked up and would not steer. towed to dealer and advised that this happens frequently and replaced the rack and pinion and electronic steering control. steering immediately locked up.
Loss off power steering and stability control
While stopped and attempting to turn my steering wheel to the right or left to maneuver out of a parking space, backing into my driveway or simply making a right or left turn, i would hear a popping noise coming from the steering mechanism. the noise did not happen all the time and i could go a month or so without hearing it at all. i took the vehicle into the dealership for an oil change and asked ford to do a visual inspection of my steering mechanism to make sure nothing appeared to be obviously identifiable. explained to ford that the popping noise comes and goes. i was told that everything looked to be in good shape and nothing was loose. a couple of months later the popping noise was replaced with steering resistance and grinding as i turned the steering wheel in a parked position and while driving. furthermore, when changing lanes the vehicle appeared to have too much play in the steering wheel and would have to be pulled back to center. this appears to be a serious safety issue, so i researched "2016 ford explorer steering complaints" and was surprised to find hundreds of steering complaints just like mine. my vehicle currently has roughly 69,800 miles, however, the complaints i read dealt with vehicles between 22,000 - 80,000 miles. i dropped my car off today at ford to have the problem assessed. my vehicle is not under warranty and this may be something i have to pay out of pocket for. with the number of complaints i was able to uncover with a simple google search i'm sure ford is aware of the steering mechanism defective and a recall should be ordered. there is no way a major part such as the steering mechanism should be failing on any vehicle. i encourage the nhtsa to look into the hundreds if not thousands of other complaints related to the 2016 - 2018 ford explorer steering assembly.
Takata recall. whenever i maneuver slowly when i park horizontally, i can hear crackling sound and this was fixed twice by ford dealer. recently, the dashboard had warning that steering is not working. the steering became stiff right away and stiffer that have to drive slowly and turn on my hazard light the next 3 miles to reach home. i could hardly turn the wheel that have to avoid roads where i have to turn. it was fixed by same dealer and got my vehicle after a week. the mileage is 18,000 and now i'm not confident to take my 3 year old car on long distance drive. the suspension was fixed as well mid 2018 for the car is running like a 20 year old truck on the road.
My steering rack/pinion has gone completely out. at first the steering wheel would make noises when turning, however now it is completely impossible to drive. i have researched and previous model explorers have had the exact same issues and multiple 2016 models are experiencing the same problem. i can't find a part, i can't drive my vehicle. what is needed for a recall to happen on this model?
I brought my 2016 ford explorer sport into lhm draper on april 29th with some service concerns. the most important problem was a clunking/knocking/buckling noise in the front end when turning the wheel. after leaving the car for 12 days i discovered they did not fix anything. for the next 9 days as i drove the car i noticed that the clunking noise was still very much present and happening every single day. there wasn't a single day that i didn't hear this noise. i took the car back in on may 24th again for a clunking/knocking noise in front end when the wheel is turned. also a whining/winding noise from the steering wheel. i picked the car up on june 4th only to discover it still wasn't fixed. i have sent several messages to the dealer with no response. the car makes this noise daily. to my dismay, i did some google searches on the internet yesterday for potential causes of this knocking noise and discovered this is a huge problem with ford explorers!!! there are hundreds and hundreds of complaints!!! i also understand ford recalled earlier model year explorers with power steering problems with this same knocking noise. i am concerned that i am now outside of my warranty period. i know all too well about that. we have a 2006 ford f350 with only 55,000 miles sitting on the side of our house that hasn't been drivable for years. about a year after we bought the truck, we began having problems with overheating and one day it started blowing white smoke. we immediately took it to the dealer and were told that this particular truck has problems with the egr cooler. the vehicle was serviced, but sometime after the warranty expired it began experiencing the same problems and ford washed their hands of it. we've been told that it will cost over $10k to get it fixed. so there it sits! this vehicle is only 3 years old with 33,000 miles.
Had the rack and pinion steering fail at 30,000 miles ,when i turned the steering wheel even slightly it sounded like metal was grinding.
Started hearing grinding noise when turning left or right. rack and pinion went bad at 78000 miles.
After 44k miles the steering rack is completely broken and requires a full replacement. this is greater than $2500 cost for a new car car makes a loud mechanical clunking sound when turning right. had it reviewed by local ford dealer and they said bearings on the rack and pinion assembly are going. this is a safety issue where a new car with such low miles has a steering system that requires full replacement. internet searches have shown many instances of people requiring a replacement of the system.
Randomly, car began making a grinding noise when turning one day. took care into shop and discovered that steering rack needs to be replaced. car only has 70k miles and will cost $2,300 to repair.
Takata recall was driving slowly making turn and suddenly could not move steering wheel but vehicle was still moving a bit .. could not stop it ... could not go forward ... no backward ....thanks god that was in the alley with no people otherwise somebody would get hit... just cars around but i did not hit any ...thanks god ...horible experience ...

Vehicle steering became stiff while driving in a parking lot, with multiple errors. cannot drive vehicle safely. happened without warning. -hill start assist not available -service advancetrac -terrain management system fault
While driving on a major highway the power steering went out with eps failure error messages: "steering assist fault service required" and "service advancetrac" could not steer the vehicle effectively and needed to pull off the road. there were no warning signs or previous issues. no restart, battery disconnect or fix was/is available. took it to the dealership who recognized full steering rack/pinion failure at only 50,000 miles.

My wife, daughter and i were driving form nyc to baltimore in my 2016 ford explorer. in the last 10 minutes of the trip i was on the highway traveling at approximately 65mph. i received a warning message on my vehicle stating that power steering has malfunctioned and to service now. i slowed the vehicle down and traveled another 8 miles to my destination. after consulting my owner's manual, i restarted the vehicle and got the same message as well as another one saying that the lane detecting sensor was malfunctioning as well. the next morning i was going to take it to a nearby dealership for service. however when i started the vehicle and tried to move forward the steering was very stiff and difficult to maneuver the vehicle. i had the car towed to the dealership. currently they are assessing the vehicle and mentioned that this happens with some makes and models and that i may have to pay for the repairs which could cost in the $2000 dollar range. i have reached out to ford customer service and they have passed me to 3 differ departments all who say there is nothing they can do.
While driving, dashboard alerts started with: advance trac/terrain management fault. steering loss/stop safely. power steering seized up and only able to drive for 5 minutes but could feel power steering tightening up. parked and turned off vehicle; then could not turn steering wheel.
Vehicle was stationary thankfully and the steering wheel was locked and does not move .
Tl* the contact owns a 2016 ford explorer. when the vehicle was started, the steering wheel failed to operate. the contact was unable to control the vehicle while driving. also, the traction control and power assist warning indicators illuminated. the vehicle was towed to red rock ford of dickinson (2585 i-94bl, dickinson, nd 58601, (701) 225-5175), but was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was notified. the failure mileage was 50,000.
Tl* the contact owns a 2016 ford explorer. while driving approximately 20 mph, the steering lost power and the power steering, brake assist, and other unknown indicators illuminated. the contact managed to drive the vehicle to his residence where the steering wheel locked. the vehicle was towed to quirk ford of augusta (207-560-1371, located at 7 water st, hallowell, me 04347) where it was diagnosed that the electronic power assist steering system needed to be replaced. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated that the failure was not covered by the warranty. the failure was repaired at the contact's expense. the failure mileage was approximately 43,000.
Steering wheel not moving, not able to control it.milage on car 42,000. car towed to a dealer. they found, that the rack and pinion is completely locked and needs to be replaced. estimate repair at 2,400. warranty does not cover it. a case was open with ford.
Started hearing noise and feeling vibration when steering to the right while driving and parking; got more pronounced over several days. took vehicle to ford where they diagnosed need to replace steering gear/rack & pinion assembly. repair cost $2125. vehicle had 51k miles. seems unusual to have major part fail after 3 years of driving.
Power steering goes out while driving causing uncontrolled steering.
I have 28,452 miles on my car and the power steering went out. i get a warning which says steering assist fault service required, terrain management system fault, and service advance trac errors upon starting my vehicle. in researching these errors, it seems to be a very common problem with ford explorers and a costly one to fix. i believe this to be a manufacture defect, due to the sheer number of similar complaints and low mileage. in addition, this is a huge safety problem if one was traveling down the road which also seems to happened.
Steering noise is a when turning.
At approximately 35000 the steering started to slip and become periodically unresponsive. at 35975 miles it failed completely while driving almost leading to an accident. it was taken to a ford dealership where they said the entire steering system would need to be replaced and quoted $3000 for the repair.
Tl* the contact owns a 2016 ford explorer. while driving 55 mph, the steering wheel seized and the steering fault service and service advance track warning indicators illuminated. the vehicle was taken to century ford of mt. airy (302 century dr, mt airy, md 21771, (301) 829-2800) where the contact was informed that the steering rack needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 66,135.
With less than 30,000 miles, my steering began to bind when turned fully to the left or right. this was only noticeable at low speeds, but due to my concerns about the safety hazards of steering failures i took it to dealer for an evaluation. they reported that the steering module had failed and it would cost >$2300 to repair. my warranty expired due to time (42 months) so unless ford offers a warranty extension i will have to pay an exorbitant amount for what should never fail - certainly not with less than 30,000 miles. i do not know what would have happened had i not brought the car in immediately, but the need to replace the steering system suggests it was very serious.
2016 ford explorer limited 40k miles, identified my steering was locked up 3 weeks ago, i attributed it to severe cold temperatures. i contacted the dealership and they advised they cannot troubleshoot until it happens again. friday night 12/7/18 while driving in rush hour traffic on a one way slush covered road, i lost the ability to steer my vehicle. i had to manually steer my vehicle to safety, it was incredibly dangerous and scary.i was able to pull it onto a side street and it had to be towed to the dealership. i am thankful i was not going any faster than 30mph when this happened. i have found 71 reported incidents with ford explorers of this year losing steering among other major problems. i am waiting a call from the dealership and contacting ford in the interum.
Tl* the contact owns a 2016 ford explorer. while driving 70 mph, the steering column seized and the steering column warning indicator illuminated. the contact pulled the vehicle to the side of the highway, pressed the "ok" option on the message board, and was able to resume normal driving. also, while driving 55 mph and hauling a trailer, the "hill start assist not available" warning indicator illuminated. the contact pressed the "ok" button and the warning light disappeared. in addition, the abs, steering fault service now, and service track warning indicators illuminated at various times while driving. during the failure, the contact pressed the "ok" button again and the warning indicators disappeared. the contact took the vehicle to sunnyvale ford (650 e el camino real, sunnyvale, ca 94087, 408-215-9949) and was informed that the repairs would cost $400. after a diagnostic was performed, the dealer determined that the warning indicator illumination was linked to a faulty battery. the dealer wanted to test the vehicle's trailer hitch cable to determine if that cable was linked to the failures. it was diagnosed that the steering rack was the cause for the system failure and the dealer provided an estimate for the repairs. the vehicle had not been repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 32,000.
My power steering has been making a snapping noise and i'm afraid of catostrofic failure. i no longer trust driving the vehicle, it has only 36,000 miles.
