We have classified the 4 complaints from 2002 Ford Explorer Sport Trac about EXTERIOR LIGHTING into the following categories.
No left turn single or brake lights, when the steering wheel is tilited down we found the turn singles do not work or brake lights. *tr
Part # e6db-14489-da. this is a wiring harness connector located in the steering column that becomes unplugged when you tilt steering downward. result is brakes lights and turn signals no longer function. ** my sister-in-law was nearly rear-ended while waiting to make a turn. this is a major safety issue. many other people with same issue. also, have seen similar complaints for other ford vehicles (taurus). serious accidents will happen if public is not notified. dealers charging $200+ to fix. *tr
My left turn signal went out. replaced bulb...no change. went to dealership. they repaired steering wheel harness issue. worked until i drove my aunt to det. metro for a flight to dallas. spent the whole drive trying to make other drivers remember hand signals from there to center line, mi on freeways. this time the dealership claimed the wires needed to be covered with a melt-wrap to stop the tilt wheel from pinching the wires. i think it should have been right from day 1 and ford's should pay us back for both the brakes and the lights. recall and fix this! i have never had to put this much into brakes/lights before. i've been driving for 44 years. all ford products. what's the problem with this one????? i neglected to say that my rotors went at 12000 miles. car turned into a death trap shortly after. kept taking it to dealership complaining that it took off and pulled right when i braked. they replaced everything they could talk me into paying for to the tune of $1100 and when it didn't fix it they still claimed that their charge was taking care of "other" problems. i made the tech. drive with me and repeat what caused the problem (slow braking as if at a stop sign/traffic light) and he actually yelped when the truck took off again and turned right on him. turns out it was a bad right front anti-lock sensor that cost me a fortune. too bad ford doesn't have more capable tech's to find the problem. also too bad that the sensor wasn't working well in the first place. brake module replacement, rotors, pads...still under 30000 and have no confidence. all my other cars/trucks went way beyond 70000 miles without rotor problems. i'm a "light" braker. this is the first time i ever had to do the brakes like this. i'm beginning to think it's a cheap-down, more work for the dealers issue. shame on somebody! *tr
Left rear blinker and brake light quit working. bulbs and fuses were changed but did not correct the problem. problem was found in tilt steering column. a wire pulled itself free of the wire connection harness due to usage of the tilt steering feature. this problem could have led to a very serious traffic accident since drivers behind the vehicle had no idea the vehicle was preparing to make an left hand turn and it compounded the problem because only one brake light worked. my husband took the steering column off and reinserted the wire into the harness and applied epoxy to secure it. *tr

The headlights continues to go on and off. most of the time it is the passenger side light but the drivers side also does the same thing. i have replaced the passenger side pigtale but the problem is still there. *nm
While driving 65 and attempting to pass another vehicle consumer's vehicle failed to go into passing gear. engine stalled and consumer had to coast to the side of the highway. once off the road consumer restarted the vehicle and continued driving. *ak the vehicle was towed to the dealer but the technician couldn't find anything wrong. the vehicle was taken back tot he dealer where they replaced the fuel pump, gas tank and air flow sensor. so far the vehicle has been running as it should. the heat shield under the vehicle rattled. the dealer adjusted it. the multifunction switch would not lock in place when using the turn signals. *nm
