We have classified the 5 complaints from 2014 Ford Escape about STRUCTURE into the following categories.
The vehicle was being driven and had only been started and moving for less than 5 minutes. noticed that windshield wipers would not shut off or change speeds, then noticed a slight odor in car that increasingly strengthened. phoned my husband while at a stop light, odor of something burning became much stronger, then noticed smoke coming between the the drivers side hood seam and between the hood and the windshield, this was immediately followed by noticable flame. i put the vehicle in park, turned on hazard lights and exited the vehicle. local police and fire department responded, began with small fire extinguishers, without success and fire department opened hood and applied water to extinguish. this was on a city street in o'fallon, mo. uncertain of cause, but am now aware that ford issued a recall on this model (recall 17s09) and believe this could be a possibility.
Exterior passenger side door handle fell off. the vehicle was stationary. it fell off while opening the door
Vehicle had recall work done regarding for handles, since then i have experienced not stop issues with drivers door handle getting stuck in open position which causes the door not to securely latch closed. i have brought the vehicle back and was told it's just a lubrication issue.
Both rear doors on my 2014 ford escape suddenly stopped opening either from the inside or the outside thereby trapping the people in the back seat without a way to exit the car. this happened suddenly. yesterday the doors worked fine then today broken. nothing changed with the vehicle....no accidents or abuse of any kind. car was located in my driveway.
The driver side rear door latch broke, which would not allow the door to close, posing a safety hazard to the occupants inside the vehicle. the vehicle was stationary and as i loaded a bag in the backseat and closed the door to leave one day, it did not close.
Attempted to start my vehicle and pushed ignition button. all of my panel lights and monitor started glitching and flashing and then everything went black. the engine did not start. there was a recall but my vehicle was not part of recall. i have owned vehicle for 2 years. i have had a drivers door lock cylinder fall out. i have rust in several locations, including hatch and passenger interior side of door.
Tl* the contact owns a 2014 ford escape. on three occasions, while loading cargo into the vehicle, the liftgate fell and struck the contact on the back and shoulders. medical attention was not received. the contact stated that the liftgate independently opened. the vehicle was taken to mock ford sales (located at 913 se 6th st, grants pass, or 97526, (541) 476-6656) where it was diagnosed that the rke transmitter modules showed no codes. the contact was informed that the hands-free power liftgate option showed no fault codes. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 29,180.
I was driving down the highway at a normal rate of speed (65), as by vehicle began to stall out. the car stopped driving right on the highway, and i was barely able to pull it to the shoulder without getting hit by other cars. once i pulled to the shoulder, the car began smoking. smoke quickly filled the inside of the vehicle. before i could roll all the windows down, the engine had burst into flames.
The rear passenger doors fail to open from outside the vehicle because the interior door panels will not stay attached to the inside of the door causing them to hang on the frame of the door. the clips on the door panels have been repaired twice once and the same issue continues to occur leaving us unable to access the second row of seats in the vehicle.
I hit a deer head on with extensive front end damage and the air bags never deployed because the deer did not hit the bumper.
I drove an hour to another city. upon arrival to the city i stopped the car and got out. i noticed the back, driver side door was open slightly. i went to close it and realized that the door would not stay closed. the latch would not catch the metal piece on the frame of the car to keep the door closed. i could not drive the vehicle without tying the door with a rope to the inside of the car to keep it from flying open while driving. it still will not remain closed as is a major safety hazard for my passengers and other drivers on the road. there was a recall by ford for this exact problem for the make, model, and year of my car, but my specific vin was not included in this recall and my car is experiencing the same problem. i have attached the article stating that this was a recalled issue. if you require any pictures or further documentation please let me know.
I had the rear door latch recall taken care of, and now both doors are leaking whenever it rains. it is running down the window inside the door paneling onto the floor. i usually keep my car inside a garage, and have had to let it be in my driveway when it rained recently.
Car was purchased used in feb 2017 with 19,800 miles on it. it's now 18 months after we've owned it and it only has 49,000 miles on it. the 3 of the 4 doors have rust along the bottom of each of them, which has come through the paint. according to ford and the dealer, they will only fix it at their cost if the rust has eaten all the way through the metal. i know the warranty states that it only covers perforated body panels, but at what point do i know it is perforated before it's too late. super frustrating.
Just over a year ago, some months after the vehicle was just purchase from the winnie ford preowned lot, the door suddenly opened while we were driving. turns out there is an existing recall for this vehicle pertaining to problematic door latches. we contacted the dealer we purchased the vehicle from about getting a free repair due to the recall, but the dealer directed us to call ford instead. ford tells us that the recall issue was already supposedly made at some dealership in florida and that we would need to pay a full price to repair their defect, a price that we simply cannot afford the owner of the vehicle is a retired 70 year old getting by with social security payments). we eventually figured out a way to force the door to close, but today (july 29, 2019) the door reopened itself again, and after an hour of attempts, the door refuses to shut. this vehicle is used by several family members to get to school, work, stores, etc. as such, this is a major safety and security risk for us and our vehicle- the ny times reported that this incident once led to a crash with three incidents. i have been compelled to submit this complaint to the nhsta because ford and the dealership(s) are refusing to take any accountability regarding fixing their defect (since their supposed initial 'repair' clearly did not work), and i request that someone at the nhsta investigate this urgent safety matter. i will continue to contact the dealership and ford to ensure that they properly repair their recalled defect.
Tl* the contact owns a 2014 ford escape. the contact stated that the rear passenger door failed to open from outside the vehicle and could only be opened from inside the cabin. in addition, the interior door panel was detached from the door. the dealer (sentry ford, 4100 mystic valley pkwy, medford, ma 02155, (781) 395-6400) was notified of the failure and advised the contact to schedule a diagnostic appointment. the manufacturer stated that the vehicle was excluded from nhtsa campaign number: 16v643000 (latches/locks/linkages) and recommended calling the dealer for diagnostic testing and repair. the approximate failure mileage was 55,549.
Out of nowhere a week ago my back drivers side door became very difficult to open. i had the car in for service on 3/31 due to the wiring harness coming loose and had them check the door. i was told the clips that hold on the door panel were broken/missing and the door was slipping off. i am very concerned about this being a newer vehicle with no body damage and i submitted a nhtsa issue 11083236 earlier today for the wiring harness. i called ford customer relationship recall dept and spoke to mel and was told that there is no timeframe for them to review concerns, no way for me to escalate the issue, no way for me to have it reviewed by the department that decides when there should be a recall (and that the name of that dept was proprietary) my case#14515980 was given to me but they said that i cannot check on or validate that this is even revirewed with them. i am very concerned that 1. my wiring harness came loose and my car went dead on the road (luckily i wasn't on a highway) and 2. my door could just fall off without a cause. i paid for the repairs but have found recalls on other ford escapes for both of these issues, it just doesn't include my vin number and i would like it investigated to see if my vin should be included.
I was driving up the interstate after work and while i was driving i began to notice smoke. i looked around and realized it was my car. i pulled over to the side and my car started flashing everything on the dash panel was red and flashing engine failure. i cut the car off and then went to try and pop the hood, i couldn't get it opened and i looked down and began to see flames. i called 911 and my car engulfed in flames. i had a recall on my car for a problem with the engine cylinder head saying that it could cause an engine fire if oils were to get out and hit a hot surface. i got my recall fixed and then my car caught on fire a few weeks later.
I started my vehicle yesterday to warm up and about 5-10 minutes later heard a big boom, looked out the door and the front end of my escape was completely engulfed in flames. i had scheduled it to get repaired yesterday morning, but was unable to make it as we received a lot of snow and schools were cancelled and such. i had known of the recall since last year since i already was involved in another recall with the latch. i tried to get them taken care of at the same time, but the remedy was not available and wouldn't be for some time. i received a notice directly from ford between one and two weeks ago and called ziegler in elkhart to make an appointment, but they weren't available for almost a week. it is obvious the damage was already done with my car anyway, considering the description of the recall, which a whole process of the cylinder head cracking, coolant leaking out and that potentially causing a fire in the engine compartment. i am thankful that the car was just warming up in our driveway and neither my kids nor myself were inside. i am also grateful that our house didn't catch fire and just sustained some cosmetic damage due to the heat. i do not have the report from the fire department yet, but they said it would be available soon. it was the penn township fire dept that responded and i talked to durgan spinsky whose work number is 5742555075 * (recall related incident) ts
Vehicle was in motion on city street being parked. i heard a loud pop noise. i looked around to see where it came from. inside the truck the interior bust open showing metal screw part of the strut or shocks that's popping out of the interior this part could have caused injuries or caused a accident if the part come all the way through the interior
When it rains hard i have a leak behind the passenger seat that comes from the light fixture - i have seen so many complaints about this from 2012 escapes thru 2017 escapes - their seems to be no fix - my biggest concern is the headliner (which everyone says not to touch) and the smell ford suggested i contact you - i would assume this happens when the car is stationary and it does not happen when car is run through car wash. *dt the consumer stated the vehicle was repaired at the owner's expense and now has started to leak again. *tr
1. seat belt: driver's seat belt unexpectedly stopped working and will not click or lock into place. the seat belt pretensioners to not function as intended when needed, increase the risk of occupant injury in the event of a crash. 2: electrical system: instrument panel: blank display, or often times inresponsive. if the instrument cluster is inoperative, the driver of may not be warned of safety related issues such as low tire pressures or disabled air bags, increasing the risk of personal injury or a crash. 3.body: door: the body of the rear drivers side door is often hard to close and the body of the door often comes off. a door that opens unexpectedly in the result of not being able to close, may result in an unrestrained occupant falling from the vehicle, increasing the risk of injury.
Engine coolant sensor re-program recall. this was corrected october 10, 2017 at ford dealership in bensenville, illinois. also four door latches were recall and replaced at same time.
Delay in getting recall taken care of. notified a year ago of recall, finally received letter in may that parts were available, scheduled appointment for 7/19/2017. dealer canceled the appointment 2 days before saying parts were not available. it is now 1 month later and the dealer hasn't even ordered the parts.

We purchased a 2014 ford escape from scaffidi motors in stevens point. we have had the vehicle in for repair numerous times because frequently when you shut the back doors the inside door panel comes loose wherein you have difficulty opening and the inside door panel gets damaged or you cannot open the doors. as of today, both doors will note open. in order to get in or out of the vehicle, we have to climb thru the front passenger door. not safe and an inconvenience.

I was driving on a city street, going straight, no other cars near me, when my rear gate window spontaneously shattered. nothing hit it or the car. i didn't hit anything. just bang, and it was broken. initially it was all still in place but by the time i arrived home, pieces had begun to fall off. it was very cold outside, about 15 degrees, but no wind or precipitation was falling. i was going about 20 mph. *tr

The back driver's side passenger door popped open and would not close. i was driving straight on a city street and had to pull over. i could not close it completely even by using a bungee cord as a temporary fix.

**this incident involves the panoramic roof glass/window spontaneously bursting at highway speeds.** my family and i were driving at highway speeds when suddenly we heard a very loud explosion. it startled my husband, he almost lost control of the vehicle because the vehicle swerved as a result of having the roof torn open at highway speeds. this incident could cause a severe, life-threatening injury. we pulled over to the side of the road. we saw that the glass had burst almost completely, leaving only approximately 1.5" margins of shattered glass around the edges. the rubber bond that seals the glass on all four sides to the roof of the vehicle bent to the point where it was flailing about on the highway. the shattered pieces of glass chipped/scratched/damaged the roof rack, rear panoramic roof glass (the panoramic roof on the this escape is comprised of two glasses, one in the front that slides opened and closed, and the rear one that remains stationary) and the roof of the vehicle. absolutely nothing impacted the vehicle to cause this damage. this incident is not a result of misuse or abuse. it is absolutely a defective component that ford motor company has not been responsible for. whilst on the side of the road, we contacted our ford dealership. they told us to send pictures. we did and they sent them to ford corporate for approval. they answered that since they can't see the defective component in the pictures, they can assume something impacted the glass and therefore the incident does not qualify for warranty service. i was quoted that the repairs could cost approximately $1500usd. i have documentation and pictures of the incident that i would be more than happy to share if deemed helpful to make my case. this is an issue that has affected many escape owners. there was even a recall in 2014 regarding issues with the panel of the panoramic roof.
Rear outside door handles stick. excessive force has to be used to open the doors. parts have fallen out of handle inside door.
The rear hatch has a significant leak when it rains or i go through a car wash. i have reported this many times and the resolve was for me to pay an extreme amount to have the rubber replaced. several of my friends that have the same car have the same problem. this was noticed shortly after i bought the car. i believe it is a manufacturer problem and should be recalled and corrected. it is leaking right at the wiring on the passenger side and could cause more serious issues down the road. i have a temporary fix at this time but it is not permanent by any means.
This is one of many occurrences concerning this problem. my first communication with ford service was in december 2013 concerning the door handle sticking causing the door not to latch. in january 2014 they asked for a photo of the problem to share with their engineering team. ford has issued case numbers and basically just told me to bring it into the dealer. i've had multiple communication with ford service throughout the year informing them that i still have the issue. the dealer has tried to fix four times including applying the recall. the last dealer attempt was in november 2014 but the problem still exists. the door has opened when i was backing out of the driveway due to the handle sticking in the open position.the door handle has stuck in the open position well over a hundred times. i've shared photos of the issue with the dealer, ford service and over the internet. *tr
The rear hatch where the handle bar is to close the back hatch has ripped off. this is now hanging and has caused the back plastic piece that holds my window, windshield wiper, and where i am supposed to pull the hatch door down to be useless. it just flaps now. i cant shut my door with the handle that was provided since it fell off!! i hope this doesn't make my windshield leak or hurt the wiper. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2014 ford escape. the contact stated that both the front driver and passenger side exterior door handles failed to latch securely until accessing the reset button located inside the door. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where both front door handles were replaced for the second time. in addition, the exterior rear driver side door handle was replaced one time. the manufacturer was notified of the failures. the approximate failure mileage was 28. updated 04/22/2016*lj *tr
2014 ford escape. consumer writes in regards to shield and gas tank damages. *smd the consumer ran over a metal strip in the road. the metal strip he ran over, punctured a hole in the shield and gas tank. the dealer replaced the gas tank and shield. the consumer was informed the shield was flimsy. *jb
The door handle stuck in the open position preventing the door from latching closed. the dealer has tried to resolve three times now and it's continues to get happen and in fact getting worse. ford`s customer relationship center has been notified beginning on january 19, 2014. last contact with ford`s customer relationship center was on august 26, 2014 with no resolution. *tr
Friday evening i noticed something hanging down from the front of my car. the hard plastic and what i will describe as fire resistant insulator was 1/2 off. the pink plastic bolt in the frame was broken and further back where it appears to have been attached with a metal bolt; the hole around it on the plastic was too large. now there are various electronic parts, belts, etc exposed. i was told by ford that something hit the car or perhaps had been backed into by another vehicle not leaving visible damage, but causing pressure underneath, or the harsh minnesota winter caused this as they are seeing many things break.there are no signs of any damage and they refused to put it up on the jack to inspect. i do not feel that ford is willing to even investigate their defective parts, in fact. i was told this was not a warranty problem but rather an insurance issue. since i do not feel safe driving with all of this exposed i have tied it up to my grill with twine. *tr
Doors would not always latch shut in cold weather. notified ford service on line and provide a photo of the problem. they said they would get back to me but never did. i followed up with ford service a couple months later and they said to take the vehicle in to my dealer. after bringing the vehicle in may 2014 for this issue, i found out recall 14s03 existed from the dealer. they informed me they applied the fix by adjusting all door handles. the problem was not resolved as it's now happening in the warm weather.complained to the dealer and ford service. took the vehicle back in june 2014 and the dealer said they again adjusted the door handles. the vehicle still has the door handle problem with the door handle sticking and the door not latching. the door came open while backing out of the driveway. *tr
I was traveling on the hwy at 70mph and heard what sounded like a shotgun blast. i looked around and heard what ended up being glass falling into my rear seat. my rear panoramic glass had shattered and blown upward in a way i've never seen before and i had no idea what caused it, as there were only clothes and a box in the rear seat. i took it to ford and made a claim which was denied. i am confident this problem is a manufacturing defect, but ford says this breakage would only happen upon installation due to using tempered glass. i don't believe that because nothing hit mine and still, it shattered. i also have a leaking roof, which may be related to this problem. *tr
