My 2012 ford escape suddenly loses power when driving. it happened on the highway and i was almost rear ended. i googled the symptoms and found that it is probably the etb electronic throttle body. this is dangerous and nhtsa did not issue a recall or protect the public by requiring ford to provide towing. instead nhtsa only required that ford extend the warranty an additional 10 years leaving ford owners at risk of injury or worse.
In a private parking lot, after executing a 90 degree left turn into a parking spot and with the brake pedal applied in order to slow then stop the vehicle, the vehicle surged forward just before coming to a complete stop. you could hear the engine rev up as it surged forward. application of the brake pedal did nothing to slow it down. after the vehicle was jarred by striking the curb the engine returned to normal idol. so much power was applied in the surge that the vehicle jumped a curb, traveled over a a grass plot and struck another car on the other side. our ford escape suffered front end damage (toward drivers side) and the other vehicle (a ford eco -boost) suffered front and drivers side damage. note that the vehicle was traveling forward at about one mph (almost to a full stop) when the surge occurred. as it surged the speed increased rapidly to about seven to ten mph. the vehicles were not towed at the time but when driving a short distance home a severe defect in the steering (pull to the left) was noticed making it virtually inoperable. the vehicle will be towed from our driveway to the body shop.
Takata recall, my car ford escape 2012 engine stall/dies while driving , almost on daily bases now, at any travel point at any road. check engine light came out but now goes. i took the photo(just in case to prove it) and diagnostic scanner printout the throttle body needs to be addressed . i read that this vehicle has an extended warranty for this part up to 10 years due to defect throttle body . i will take to the dealer tomorrow and i will notify them too. this car has only 43150 miles on it and needs to be fix due to a dangerous engine stalling . "i purchased it recently"
Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford escape. the contact was not the first owner of the vehicle and was unaware that there was an internal fault with the throttle body. the wrench icon, check engine, and oil pressure warning indicators kept randomly illuminating. courtesy ford (6393 us-98 w, hattiesburg, ms 39402, (601) 264-5555) was aware that the manufacturer issued an unknown recall campaign to address the failure; however, there was no remedy for special coverage campaign number: 13n03 (throttle body extended coverage). the dealer stated that the vehicle was excluded because the mileage exceeded 8,000. the dealer diagnosed that the air flow sensor needed to be replaced. the part was replaced and the dealer stated that the throttle body was cleaned; however, both repairs failed to provide a remedy. the dealer and manufacturer expected the contact to replace the throttle body. the vehicle continued to lose speed and the contact was concerned that it could stall. the vehicle was not repaired and was unable to be driven. the manufacturer was contacted and provided no assistance. the failure mileage was not available...*bf consumer asked the manufacturer for technical guidelines for the campaign #13n03 and was told consumer wouldn't get what was needed. throttle replaced. *jb
I experienced unintended acceleration while driving my 2012 ford escape on july 7, 2018 while driving in my neighborhood. i was unable to control the speed of the vehicle by using the brakes and crashed into a neighbor's mailbox. i finally shut off the car to make it stop.
Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford escape. while stopped at a traffic light, the vehicle independently accelerated. the contact was able to shift the vehicle into neutral to slow down the vehicle. the contact stated that the failure recurred twice. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic to be diagnosed; however, the mechanic was unable to duplicate the failure or retrieve a fault code. an unknown dealer was contacted, but was unable to offer assistance or schedule an appointment to have the vehicle diagnosed. the vehicle was not repaired. the contact stated that the failure was intermittent. the manufacturer was not informed of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 50,000.
I have had 3 serious incidents with the ford escape 2012. first, twice the car has completely shut off while driving. i was thankfully driving at only about 30-40 mph and was able to coast to the side and turn the car off and back on again, which seemed to have corrected the problem. various mechanics have been unable to recreate the problem and have not fixed it. second, on 11/11/17, i was stopped at a light waiting to turn left on a major road, and upon accelerating and turning, the power steering seemed to go out on me. it became much harder to steer. i pulled over on a side road and again turned the car off and back on again, which again seemed to fix the problem. there are many online forums where these two issues are being reported by many owners with the same result. mechanics can't seem to recreate the problems and therefor can't offer a fix at the moment. these 3 incidents thankfully did not cause any injury, but they easily could and see to be serious defects that are going unaddressed.
Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford escape. after pulling into a parking space, the engine unexpectedly revved very high before the vehicle erroneously accelerated forward and crashed into a tree. during the time of the incident, the contact's foot was positioned on the brake pedal. no injuries were report and no police report was filed. the cause of the failure was not determined. the local dealer (ted britt ford in fairfax, va) was notified of the failure, but the manufacturer was not. the failure mileage was 50,000.
Sudden decleration and stall while in highway speeds on highway, likely due to electronic throttle body (etb) issue. very dangerous issue.
Tl* the contact owned a 2012 ford escape. while driving 5 mph, the contact attempted to park the vehicle and it accelerated forward without warning. the contact's foot was not on the accelerator pedal at the time of the failure. as a result, the vehicle crashed into a parked vehicle. there were no injuries. the driver's air bag deployed, but the passenger air bag did not deploy. a police report was filed. the vehicle was towed to a salvage yard where it was diagnosed as a total loss. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the vin was unknown. the failure mileage was 70,000.
This is an ongoing issue while driving the engine suddenly reduces speed causing the car to stall! at any given time, the car stalls in the middle of the road or highway and while holding up traffic, i turn the ignition switch and the car resumes. this is a safety issue and must be recalled and repaired immediately!
I was in a turn lane turning onto a highway when my car started sputtering and lost power. i could no longer accelerate when pressing the gas pedal. i coasted through the turn and had to coast across a lane of rush hour traffic to get pulled to the side of the road to safety. the wrench light and check engine light came on. it had to be towed to the dealer. they haven't looked at it yet but from what i can tell it sounds like the throttle box, which ford had under extended warranty because of all the problems they've had with it. why hasn't this been recalled??? it was very dangerous for me to lose all power in the middle of rush hour traffic and this could have easily been avoided if they would have done a recall on it years ago!
I was driving home friday afternoon when my car suddenly started to choke down. i was not going more than 25 mph because i had just recently drove over a speed bump. i lost all power and was unable to accelerate. i cruised over to the side of the road and put my car in park. i noticed a wrench light come on and i then turned the car off. once i had someone there to follow me home, i cranked my car back up and drove very slowly the rest of the way(3 miles max) to my house. the car did take a few extra seconds to crank but seemed to do fine on the trip home. we took it to the dealership first thing the next morning and they are supposed to run a diagnostic test on it sometime today.
Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford escape. while driving approximately 20 mph, the vehicle accelerated without warning. the vehicle was taken to a dealer who was unable to diagnose the failure. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure was not remedied. the contact was unaware of nhtsa campaign number: 16v777000 (fuel system, gasoline). the failure mileage was approximately 37,000.
Chronic (many times over a period of years) hesitation when accelerating from a low speed, as when attempting to merge from a highway on-ramp. only a second or so, but enough to make acceleration uncertain and unpredictable causing several near-miss accidents
Engine...significant noise and vibration when stationary. i was told from the dealership that i would not find this after i drove the vehicle around for awhile; due to being in the garage and moisture. seed control...sudden loss of power while driving on interstate between 60- 65 mph. when i took the vehicle to the dealership they said they could find nothing wrong, sent a mechanic out to ride with me in the vehicle and explain what had happened i was advised to come back again if it happens again. i said i felt unsafe and felt afraid to drive this vehicle. the dealership had me drive another "same" vehicle and it was just as loud at idle and seemed no better. i left in my vehicle unsure of it's safety and prayed a lot. i do not drive much anyway but limit trips now. i want to be safe. i want a safe vehicle.
Reduced speed when accelerator pedal is pressed causing vehicle to slow to idle condition in city driving speeds of less than 30 mph
I purchased the vehicle back in december of 2012 from robinson ford in calexico, california. a few months (i can't recall the exact date) after driving the escape when coming to a stop and as i was braking, the vehicle suddenly accelerated. again in 2013, the vehicle accelerated as i was braking for a stop. this time i took the car to the dealer where i purchased the vehicle (record on file with the dealer) to report the matter and have the vehicle checked. they could not find anything wrong with the ford escape. on monday, november 23, 2015 at ~9pm as i was braking on a surface street to come to a stop, the vehicle suddenly began to accelerate. i pushed hard on the brake and the car continued to accelerate and 'jump'. this time i had two witnesses in the car with me and the situation was frightening to say the least. i once again took the vehicle to the dealer (robinson ford in calexico, ca 92231) where the same mechanic who last checked the vehicle (ramon baltazar) said there was nothing wrong with the car that he could identify (record on file with the dealer). i am know very worried and concerned that this sudden acceleration issue could result in me harming someone should this happen again. in fact, i now keep a significant distance from the vehicle in front of me anytime i am approaching a stop. i no longer feel safe or confident driving this vehicle.
While driving my vehicle experienced a rapid reduction of speed and slowed to a crawl. when trying to brake the car would accelerate then decelerate rapidly until i was able to shut the vehicle off.
While traveling at approximately 20 mph, the engine seemed to drop to a "surging" idle and manual throttle control was lost. the dash, at this point, indicated the check engine "wrench" light and the rpm indicator seemed to bounce between 300 to 1000 respectively. after pulling to the side of the road, i turned the vehicle off and restarted. the vehicle then, responded normally with no trouble codes indicated on dash. code reader: p2111. this vehicle is officially used for fire response through municipal 911 services.
Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford escape. while the contacts husband was reversing out of the driveway, the vehicle accelerated independently with force and the brake pedal was depressed in the attempt to stop the vehicle. there were no warning lights. the vehicle did a one eighty degree turn and crashed into a parked vehicle in their driveway where the vehicle came to a stop. the failure had occurred on several occasions. the driver sustained shoulder injuries and whiplash, but did not require medical attention. during those failures, the contact sustained injuries to the neck, which did not require medical attention. the contact was concerned due to their granddaughter being in the vehicle often times and there would be severe injuries if the failure were to occur while she was in the vehicle. the vehicle was not taken to a dealer or an independent mechanic for diagnostic testing. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failures. the failure mileage was approximately 69,000.
From a stopped position then excelling or while driving on highway without any warning my car will stall. and wrench will appear.
My daughter was driving back to school (7 hours) when she would go to accelerate, nothing would happen. she would have to try to move over to the right lane and then get to the shoulder. she would turn her car off and then on and it would let her accelerate again. she called me when it did this a second time. i did some research and figured out it was the throttle body. i called aaa and had her towed for two hours because i did not want her driving for fear she would lose control and hurt herself and others. she took it in to ford and they confirmed after the diagnostic that it was the throttle body. she was not letting any work be done until she knew what it was. she was then told that it was a recall and free which is why she allowed the work to be done. now they are saying that they came back and said that it is covered under extended warranty and that she has to pay for it. how is it that she has to pay for it? it is either covered by recall or covered by warranty so why does she pay for it? this is a major malfunction with these vehicles and is causing serious if not fatal harm. *tr
As the vehicle was accelerating (approx. 30 mph), the engine lost power and went into a rough idle state. i had to pull over and turn off the engine. upon restarting, it didn't start correctly. it sounded like it didn't disengage the key / starter for a few seconds (2-5). the mechanics light lite up when the engine lost power. this has happened 5 times since it first happened. it has also happened while driving on the highway at 70 mph. sudden loss of power. this is extremely dangerous and it appears that other people have been having similar problems. this should be repaired by ford at no charge to owners before there is a fatal accident due to their faulty part. *tr
This is a continuous issue first noticed a few months ago when i almost caused an accident on valentine's day because of my car. i was on a ramp about to get into traffic. the highway speed is 75mph and it was busy. i pushed the gas pedal to enter the highway but my car just stood there for about 3 seconds before it finally registered (that i pushed the gas pedal) and sped up really fast. this caused me to cut off the driver on the inside lane because my car didn't speed up as it was supposed to. i drive to work everyday on the highway and this happens about 4 times a week. the other problem, which i tried to dismiss as my imagination because the car was just purchased last year with only 3900 miles on it, is when driving in town about 30-35 mph, the engine seems to stall on and off for a couple of seconds, sort of like when speeding up and suddenly let go of the gas, as if there's no power in the engine.

My car decelerated rapidly and was unresponsive when applying the gas pedal. fortunately i was able to make it to the side of a busy interstate without incident. the car behaved as if it were going to shut down. the "wrench" indicator light was on, (check engine light). i turned off the car, and when i turned it back on the light was no longer illuminated, and the car was responding to the gas pedal. i still felt that the car was "dragging". i think it is a throttle body issue. *tr
Please forward to appropriate personnel, on thursday, august 14th at ~5:45pm a clear day: our mom/mother in-law had just dropped of my daughter after shopping and was making her way home thru the windy back roads less than two miles from our home. as she climbed a hill a few blocks around the corner from her home and stopped at a stop sign on the crest of the hill. the 2012 ford escaped lurched/surged forward uncontrollably. as from her description, she heard loud rumblings coming from the engine; the escape shook and launched her forward while she had her foot on the brake. the escape propelled her uncontrollably forward crashing into a large boulder, she then ricocheted across two lanes up hill, over an embankment /wall, just missing a tree, collided with another parked vehicle pushing it approximately three feet, passed that into another small wall just missing the house. we are thankful on many levels; that our daughter was not with her, that our mom was not severely injured and no one else was injured. i was researching online and there was an investigation open for this vehicle at one time. a recall is needed for this vehicle model before there is a fatality involved. we are very concerned knowing that many other family members and friends drive escape models. please feel free to contact us with any questions. we have many pictures from the scene for you to review. kind regards, [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr
Ford escape lost speed and was manueverable at idle speed only. repair wrench light came on. put hazard lights on and pulled into nearby parking lot after almost getting run in to by another car who did not slow down in response to hazard lights. turned car off and on again. problem was corrected. in driving to dealership for check, the car stalled out/entered limp home mode 2 more times. computer update done. car still having engine surges multiple times on way home. brought to second dealership which said first dealer made computer adjustments incorrectly. awaiting pickup of car for 2nd time to see if corrected. dealers refusing to replace throttle body at this time. *tr
Driving in the mountains of kentucky, late morning. i was in the middle lane with the cruise control on, i saw that cars were braking so i tapped on the brake to release the cruise. my car's ignition shut off. *tr
Two problems here. first one is an issue with the throttle body that i noticed a few years ago but i don't remember the exact date i called ford regarding this. occasionally, especially in the hottest days, when i hit the gas to get into traffic, my car doesn't speed up. it just sits there, which has put me in many dangerous positions where i end up pulling up in front of a fast moving car, but since mine fails to speed up even if i push the gas pedal all the way, those cars end up almost hitting me from behind. after about 5 seconds it finally takes off, spinning the tires and again putting myself and other drivers at risk of being hit. this happens more often when my car is on a downhill stop sign a few blocks down my street where i can only go left or right. i merge into traffic, but my car just rolls into the street with no power in the gas pedal for about 3-5 seconds. i notified ford after going online trying to figure out what is wetting with my car, and finding out that there is a known issue with certain 2012 models, including my car based on the vin #. they asked me to take my car to a dealer but said they would not be responsible four any out of pocket charges. the dealer said they needed an official letter from the manufacturer in order to not incur any fees. but neither ford or carmax ever notified me with any actual documentation, which made me weary to take my car to the dealer. the second issue is that i have noticed a gasoline smell in my car for about 2 years now, it's very random and happens about once or twice a month. i attribute it to driving past a gas station or a semitruck on the highway or just normal for cars to smell of gasoline sometimes. the smell only seems to last about 30 seconds.

2 months prior to this date, i was going home, 50mph merging towards another lane when the car, all of a sudden, began shaking and the acceleration slowed down tremendously. i thought i was gonna stall so i decided to push my hazard lights and parked on the right shoulder and turned off the engine. it was traffic time, but luckily i was not hit. a minute later, i turned on the engine and drove, and i was able to get home. on april 1, 2014, i was driving to work on i-5, san diego, ca going 60, i heard a thud, and when i looked at the dashboard, the wrench light was on. in heavy traffic with my hazard lights on i was able to coast very slowly to the right, narrow shoulder and turned off the engine. every driver behind me was so mad, blowing their horn. a minute later, i turned the engine back on and left. i arrived at work very upset, disturbed, and still a bit shaking. i could have caused a major pile-up, and perhaps i could have been in severely injured. that afternoon, when i drove home, i took the inland street to be a little safer. and lo and behold, the wrench light came on again. so with my hazard lights on, i quickly parked the car and turned off the engine. then i proceeded driving home without any problems. i have not brought my car to the dealer yet because i want to ensure the problem is covered by my warranty. on april 8, 2014, i will drive my car to perry ford in national city, ca. i also called customer satisfaction program twice, and i hope they could relay my message to the dealer i was going to drive my car to for repair. in google, numerous complaints mentioned the ebt, and i'm sure it's the problem. i am a 67 year old driver who needs the safest car to drive to work on the freeway, monday to friday. *tr
Vehicle lost power on highway for approx 5-10 seconds, power came back slowly and then happened again a few minutes later for 5-10 seconds. depressing accelerator had no effect. *tr
I was driving the car, came to a stop sign, stopped and proceeded to press gas and turn into lane. the car jumped forward and almost stalled. it did not stop running however it would only move approx 1 mph. just enough to pull of road and park. when i restarted, the engine was shaking. when in low gear, the car would jump forward and stop, jump forward and stop. in drive, it would only go 1 mph.i took car to ford and they said it was the throttle body position sensor and that it wasn't covered under the drive train/power train warranty and would cost me $520. *tr
Intermittent vehicle stalls, which is typically more common as well as surges when entering traffic from a stopped position or while driving at highway speeds. also, while driving at a constant speed (between 15 and 25 mph) the car will slow down even though i have not lifted my foot up from the gas pedal. this has been going on ever since i bought the car in january of 2012, regardless of the weather or the season. i have gone to two different dealers and they claim nothing is wrong with the car. other people have driven my car and have complained about the stalls and surges while driving the car. thank you your help would be appreciated. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford escape. the contact stated that the vehicle stalled without warning. the failure was experienced several times. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where a diagnostic was performed, which located the failure at the throttle tower. the vehicle was not repaired. the vin was not available. the manufacturer was not made ware of the failure. the failure and current mileage was 36,600.
I have a 2012 ford escape limited. the first incident happened while i was on the freeway. the little wrench light came on and the car was stuck in idle. after pulling over and putting it in park, i tried to rev it up but it wouldn't rev. i turned the car off and waited a few seconds then cranked it up. it started up and when into gear. the second time it happened, i was turning onto another street. it happened two days later. i did the same thing. that same night, it happened to me two more times on the way home from work. the last time, not only did my car do it again, but this time it acted like it was trying to kick in gear so it was jerking forward. i then put it in neutral and it just idled but would not rev up. so i turned it off and back on again and put it into gear and it went. i've taking it in to get looked at and a few different people are telling me its the same thing, the accelerator or throttle is sticking. and that its a throttle body malfunction. this is a serious safety issue that needs to be addressed. i bought my car brand new so i wouldn't have to deal with car repairs. i've had my escape for only a year and i already have to do repairs on it. *tr
This occurs sporatically - the gas will stop responding and the car will completely decelerate while i am driving. the wrench sign appears and the car is still running, but i am unable to accelerate. it usually happens while i'm driving at high speeds on the interstate. i have to pull over to the side of the road, the car sputters a bit, and if i turn off the car and turn it back on i am able to continue driving.
While driving 65 on the interstate, my ford escape jumped forward and then slowly shut down. i was not able to accelerate. thankfully i was able to make it to the side without causing an accident.
The first time this happened i was driving home and turned onto a street as i accelerated the vehicle slowed down. i had my foot as low as the pedal would go and it would not move. i switched it to park turned it off and back on and it started up and was fine at accelerating. so the second time this happened about a month later i was driving about 30mph when my escape slowed down and completely stalled out while i was driving on a very busy street. i pushed so far on the accelerator that the pedal was as low as it could go but still no movement. i quickly switched it into park turned off the vehicle and tried turning it back on but it just made the noise like it was trying to start. so i tried again and it finally turned on, switched to drive and was able to get off the street as a semi was flying up behind me. very scary moment in my life. i googled about the issue and found that an investigation is going on regarding the throttle on 2012 escapes. i think my vehicle may be a part of this. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford escape. the contact stated that while driving 75 mph, the vehicle decelerated as the wrench warning lamp illuminated. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who diagnosed that the throttle body was defective and needed to be replaced. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the vin was not available. the failure mileage was 42,000 and the current mileage was 44,000.
I had stopped at a stop sign and pressed the gas pedal to accelerate and it would not accelerate and began jerking forward parked in front of a business and put car in park and again pressed the accelerator and again it did not accelerate. backed out and put car in drive and moved about 10 feet from where i had parked and again it jerked forward and did not accelerate. tried moving a second time with the same results. parked it and turned it off to call a wrecker. tried turning it off and turning it on again and this time it worked; accelerated when gas pedal was pressed, did not jerk as it had previously. drove it without incident but decided to take it to a dealer in wharton, texas who put it on the computer to determine what was causing the problem. it came up with no code. he told me that the ford escapes and fusions had a throttle problem and he was sure that was what the problem was, he replaced it at a cost of $484.60. although i had just purchase the car, used on july 13, 2013 and was under warranty for engine and powertrain, the warranty did not cover this expense. i feel the dealer should have told me about this problem, but seeing that i am a woman, his bottom line was profit at any cost, he did not inform me. now i find out that the ford escapes are riddled with problems. so much for buying american! *tr

Within the last week, i have experienced repeated incidents of stalling when in traffic and trying to accelerate from a stop. there were no warning signs prior to the initial failure or prior to subsequent failures. i am afraid that if this continues it could end up in a wreck with someone getting injured. *tr
On the first occasion, i was pulling away from a stop sign and into traffic. my truck stalled in the middle of the intersection. i managed to shut it off, restarted and it was fi.e. i called the dealer ship and they told me a bug probably got in my air filter. about 3 weeks later it happened in the middle of the highway in traffic doing 75. i almost got smashed in the rearend. managed to restart. took it to the dealer ship and they said there was nothing wrong. i picked it up and drove it home, almost cause a 4 car pileup on the interstate. my guardian angel is worn out! finally got a code to pop up and the dealership told me it was the throttle body. no recall on this part even tho it seems to be a major issue. *tr
