Recently reported STEERING problems on 2011 Ford Escape

Right now the fuel pomp stop working and the car turns off and then after a while turns on again. it was on a local street.

After a 2.5 hour out of town trip, once i came into town and slowed down to the speed limit, the steering wheel got very hard and i had a hard time controlling the vehicle at low speeds while driving on city streets. because the steering wheel was hard, maneuvering the vehicle for turns or changing lanes was very difficult and require the use of excessive force. after reaching my destination i powered the vehicle off; when i powered it back on everything was back to normal. there were no service engine lights that came on to indicate any problem other than the steering wheel getting very hard at low speed. i found a recall online for 2011 ford escapes involving the electronic power steering but when i provided my vin number to the dealership they stated the recall did not apply to me. i feel that this safety recall does in fact apply to my vehicle but was overlooked for some reason. recall number is 14s05.

While making a turn i lost my power steering causing my to almost hit another car head on. i was able to force the wheel to turn and get off the road. i turned the car off and when i restarted it i was able to drive with power steering again.

Takata recall on may 11th 2019, my auntie and i were involved in a accident that was no fault of my own. a black toyota stop in front of when us, i hit the brakes on impact, the airbags deployed and blowup in my face, knocking out one of my crowns and shift my teeth, i went to the dentist office after leaving the hospital, the doctor told me i swallowed particles and my left side of my face would not stop hurting, i also let the dentist know the airbag blowup in my face, he found my root canal was framed in half, in order to fix the problem i would have to pay 12,000.00 of my own money to repair the tooth and other damage teeth that were shifted or i would loose them in the future, i haven't smiled sense.i was driving north bound on highway they were traveling east bound at a four way crossing into a gas station.

While driving the battery light came on, power steering went out, then all power to dash went out, pulled over and couldn't roll up the windows, no power at all, let it sit for a minute and was then able to roll up the windows.

Car has only 22,000 miles, driving on the freeway about 60 miles per hour, and heard a loud click sound and the power steering went out.

Takata recall.... checked vin with nhtsa and saw recall information. today, i would feel safer if this issue was fixed.

Complained about steering column for 2011 ford escape . i keep tell page ford in az . about my problem with steeing column . they not will to help the customer about there problem with vehicle . it hard to driver i kept tell them it hard to driver .

When driving in a low speed in a city street, all of a sudden the steering wheel won't steer it felt so hard that i had to stop on the side of the road to prevent to get into accident. i checked online if there's issue or recall on this vehicle. there's a recall for this issue but when they type the vin # it's not included and dealership said it will cost $2,000 to fix it.not sure why this is not included for recall...

This vehicle has experienced a loss of power steering while driving. console displays "power steering assist fault". dealer diagnosed a faulty steering shaft torque sensor (dtc b2278). dealer also confirmed that the part number of the faulty torque sensor is (cl8z-3f818-a). this issue seems to be the exact same as ford recall 14s05 and nhtsa campaign 14v284000. this escape is experiencing the same symptoms as recall 14s05 and the vehicle was manufactured within the dates specified in the recall, however, the vin does not currently include this vehicle in the recall.

Driving and power steering did not work. it was very hard to steer car to stop. when i turned of ignition and restart vehicle the power assist works for a while. there was a recall on approx 1.3 million vehicles. my vin # is not included......?? doesn't make sense.

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 ford escape. while driving, the power steering failed without warning. the vehicle had to be restarted to operate normally. the vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed with needing a new power steering torque sensor. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the vin was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 14v284000 (steering). the approximate failure mileage was 89,000. updated 04/11/17 lj *cn

I had to pay to have my ford escape steering fixed, now there is a recall and my dealership said that there is to a recall, which there is. i was doing and attempted to make a aright hand turn and the power steering went out.

On 3 separate occasions, my vehicle shut off while i was driving. the lights flickered off, the brakes worked at approx. 30% after the car shut off and i had minimal steering capabilities and no acceleration capability. the car has also repeatedly been found with a dead battery (around 10 times now) when it has a brand new battery and alternator, and nothing within the vehicle has been left on to drain the power. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 ford escape. the contact stated that while driving at 15 mph, the steering wheel failed without warning. the vehicle was taken to robberson ford located at: 2100 ne 3rd bend or 97701 541 382 4521, where it was diagnosed that the steering pump, steering column, and steering angle sensor needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the vehicle failure mileage was 45,000.

We purchased a used 2011 ford escape on jan 17,2017. after leaving the dealership and driving home, the power steering failed while backing out of a driveway. we turned the vehicle off, and restarted it. the power steering was functioning again. as we turned the corner on my street, the power steering failed again, causing the vehicle my daughter was driving to go straight toward a light pole on the corner. we stopped the vehicle and we were able to force the steering manually to turn into our driveway. i contacted the non-ford dealer to advise them what had happened within 30 minutes of leaving their dealership. repairs have not been made yet. ford says that my vin is not under the recall, despite having the same problem that the recall states. i researched our vehicle and contacted ford to file a complaint. there was a recall issued on may, 2014. here is the recall: recall number 14v284000 recall date 05/29/2014 component steering:electric power assist system summary ford motor company (ford) is recalling certain model year 2008-2011 ford escape and mercury mariner vehicles manufactured august 18, 2006, through september 11, 2010. the affected vehicles have a steering torque sensor that may not be able to properly detect driver steering input. as a result, the system could remove the electric power steering (eps) assist. consequence if power steering assist is lost, greater driver effort would be required to steer the vehicle at low speeds, increasing the risk of a crash. ford's number for this recall is 14s05 attached is the coding from the dealership. *tr

Electric power assisted steering system failed while driving on the highway, it failed as i was turning a corner. no power steering available. had it towed to the kendall ford in eugene or. they would have to replace the whole unit, this unit has previously failed 3 times on other vehicle of my type. the total repair cost is $1,400.00 my car only has 58,000 miles on it, i think ford needs to stand behind their product, especially when this has been an ongoing problem (3times) on cars like mine. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 ford escape. while driving approximately 6 mph pulling into a parking spot, the vehicle lost steering power. the failure was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated that there was no recall. the failure mileage was approximately 129,000.

Car would not start. once started, power steering completely out. had to drive home with no power steering.once power steering came on a day later, air is not working.

I got into a car accident when driving. a car swerved into my lane and the power stealing gave out as i attempt to swerve into another lane for safety to get out of the way. defective power steering cays ed accident and injury. fraudulent concealment of defects (ford junk cars rip off ) went to ford in november 2016 about power stearing after they reported numerous times their was nothing wrong with the steering. they finally told me, after the steering completely stopped working, that they already fixed the power steering in a previous recall. liars!!!! i have the receipt from the previous visit and no power steering was fixed. same old part is in car. and now i have to pay$1200 dollars! i called ford and they say the recall expired and i never brought my car in... if that's so why do i have service reciept. liars!

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 ford escape. while driving 50 mph, the power steering became difficult to maneuver. the power steering warning indicator illuminated. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the steering torque sensor failed and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the contact stated that the vehicle was previously repaired per nhtsa campaign number: 14v284000 (steering). the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 77,666.

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 ford escape. without warning, the eps failed and the steering wheel became extremely tight. the contact had to cautiously park the vehicle due to the failure. the dealer was notified. the manufacturer stated that the vehicle was excluded from nhtsa campaign number: 14v284000 (steering). the contact was uncertain of when the vehicle would be diagnosed and repaired. in addition, the contact was included in nhtsa campaign number: 16v777000 (fuel system, gasoline). the interim notice indicated that parts were not available. the approximate failure mileage was 106,000. vin tool confirms parts not available.

Steering problems at low speeds, harder to steer, ford shop said it was the steering turque cencor. just like the recall!

Started car to go to lunch, pulling out of parking lot steering wheel locked up, pulled in lot across street and left car running, man checked and steering still locked. turned car off and re-started...steering wheel unlocked. miles on car 110886.7, date, 09/28/2016

Lost power steering assist while driving vehicle at approx. 35mph. it was all i could do just to get it back home. i couldn't even turn it to get into my garage! i did some research on this problem and found that a recall had been issued for vehicle years 2008-2011. i called the dealer and was told that my vehicle was not included in this recall since it was manufactured on may 26 2011. my problem is: i'm having the identical problem and who's to say that these parts weren't manufactured at the same time the defective ones were?

4 separate times while driving, the steering wheel completely locked up and could not turn the steering wheel at all. luckily, was able to stop, turn car off, restart, and the steering wheel unlocked and was able to proceed. this all happened within two weeks. very scary situations.

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 ford escape. while in reverse, the steering wheel suddenly became locked and would not turn. the contact indicated that the failure occurred on two separate occasions. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the electronic steering torque sensor was faulty and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 119,000.

Power steering started randomly going out. sometimes t would work again by turning off and turning back on the vehicle but that was only temporary. i took the escape to a ford dealer to get it looked at. this year was included in the steering recall (14s05) but for some reason, this vin was not included even though it is the same problem and was the same fix as the recall is. frustrating. i did call to let ford know the problem and asked if they would include my vin since it had the same problem. they said no because it's tracked by vin and mine isn't included. the car was at 80,000 miles when this happened. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 ford escape. while driving approximately 15 mph and coming to a stop, the power steering failed without warning. the contact took the vehicle to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the steering column needed to be replaced. the vin was excluded from nhtsa campaign number: 14v284000 (steering). the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 49,112.

The power steering randomly goes out. sometimes immediately upon turning the vehicle on, other times while driving down the high way, sometimes while driving slow, or turning. it is completely random. the quick/temporary fix is to turn the vehicle back off and on again and it goes away for a while. i took the vehicle in to ford and they have to replace the steering column which comes to a total of around $1500. this is the same problems other vehicles had that were a part of the recall. my year is included in the recall but for some reason my vin is not.

Power steering started going out at the beginning of june 2016. if i shut the car off and turn it back on, it will work. but, not always. it tends to go out when turning corners, but just this week, it went out while driving straight on the highway. there is no recall on this by ford even though i have seen thousands of people with the same car and the same problem!

I filed a complaint the other day but it has gotten so much worse that i had to take it to the dealer. they told me that the pscm was bad. almost $1300. it will have to wait until i have the money for it. this is the same problem as recall #14s05 but it does not reach our manufacturer date. it is time for them to step up and extend the recall to cover all of the dates before someone gets killed when the power steering goes out in the middle of a turn like happened to me the other day. i was making a left turn in the inside turning lane when it stopped working. not only did i lose power steering but it snatched the wheel out of my hand. i almost hit the car next to me before i got control of it. if my wife had been driving, and it is her vehicle, she would have hit the car next to her. i find it hard to believe that we are the only ones complaining about this. they need to do something about this because it is going to put a financial hardship on us to get it fixed.

Last year it began when the vehicle was started the power steering would not work. you could shut the engine off and restart it and it would work. as time went by it happened more frequently and i called the ford dealer about a recall someone had told me about and was told that our escape was not included and that i should file a complaint with you. i did that last year and have gotten no response. it has gotten progressively worse. it has been shut off and restarted so many times that it killed the battery. it still had volts but no longer had enough cold cranking amps to start the engine. now it has happened a couple of times while i was driving. when it stops it almost snatches the steering wheel out of your hands. there is never any warning and no warning lights come on. sometimes when it is quiet in the car i can hear a click come from the steering column and it either quits working or if it was not working it start back. three days ago it happened while i was in the middle of a turn at an intersection that has two turn lanes and i almost hit the car next to me. if it had happened while my wife was driving she probably would have hit them. there is a good possibility of this as it is her vehicle. i am driving it this week because i am a little uncomfortable with her driving it. i live in maryland and work all week in new jersey. i hope it does not happen while i am on the nj turnpike as people on there like to stay close and goes fast. i really have no choice because we have to be able to go to work and cannot afford to have it fixed. my understanding is that there are several possibilities that go from software programing, sensor replacement or steering column replacement. it is obvious from the symptoms that it should be included in the recall but has not been.

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 ford escape. the contact stated that the steering wheel was loose. the vin was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 14v284000 (steering). the vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 150,000.

While driving at low speed on a side street, power steering quit working and error "power steering assist fault" came up. power steering completely inoperable. with much difficulty vehicle driven to ford dealership. could not be driven by person without extreme strength. unsafe for anyone to drive! advised that not included in recall and cost to repair almost $1200.

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 ford escape. while driving and making a turn, the steering wheel became difficult to maneuver. in addition, the fuel fill inlet warning light illuminated. the failure recurred intermittently. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the electronic power steering failed and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the vin was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 14v284000 (steering). the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was unknown. updated 09/22/16*lj *cn

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 ford escape. while driving approximately 5 mph, the power steering failed without warning. the vehicle was driven to a mechanic, but was not diagnosed. the vin was excluded from nhtsa campaign number: 14v284000 (steering). the manufacturer was not notified. the approximate failure mileage was 74,000.

I have been in two minor accidents as a direct result of the power steering failing while drive. the steering fails once a day and does so, usually when make a hard or sharp turn. once, the power steering disengaged, reverting to manuel, while i was traveling on the highway at 65 mph! ford refused to repair the defective stealing after more than 10 contacts with their corporate office and multiple ford dealers. they referred me to their 'legal department' and refused to replace the defective steering.

While driving the car there was a loss of power steering. drove home on local city streets with difficulty. the next day the power steering was available after starting the car. checked on internet and found that ford has had a problem for years with the model vehicle. went to the ford dealer and was told that the vehicle was out of warrenty. called ford service rep and was told to have the vehicle checked and that because of the low mileage, they may repair it.

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 ford escape. the contact stated that while driving at approximately 70 mph, the steering wheel seized without warning. the failure recurred numerous times. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated that the vin was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 14v284000 (steering). the failure mileage was approximately 78,000.

When starting the vehicle the power steering will not engage. after one or more tries it will finally engage. on more than one occasion the steering disengaged while backing out of the driveway and had to be stopped and restarted as above. my local garage found error code b1342 and confirmed by a ford dealer. the code mean the steering column must be replaced. the dealer said the vehicle in not covered by the recaĺl 14s05. i spoke to ford customer service and a case # was opened. when i called to inquire kevin said a case should not have been opened and an internal inquiry would be started. ford obviously doesn't want complaints recorded. this is a ford mistake and a safety issue and should be corrected at their expense. ford executives are unaccountable and apparently only worried about the bottom line and their bonuses. they tried to meet their safety obligation by updating software in some vehicles that warns steering is about to fail. that is unethical and no help when going 70 mph on a three or four lane highway. this reminds me of the pinto fiasco.

Electronic power steering unit failed while driving in a rural setting on a 2011 ford escape with 67287 miles. the car was able to be controlled but with great effort. this unit has been the subject of previous recall 14v284000, however this vehicle was manufactured after the cutoff date according to ford customer service. ( case #8247746-b4f4d1). it does not appear that the recall was extensive enough as this unit failed in the same mode as those previously recalled. the local ford dealer quote for repair was $705.00 parts and $322.50 labor.

When driving car going about 45mph.car shut off and wrench will appear on dashboard . i have been able to coast off the road , shut off car wait for a few minutes and restart car . i am in fear that car will shut off in area where there is no shoulder and i will be hit from behind . there seems to be a pattern building with this same problem , same model, same year .

Shortly after i bought the car the power steering started to randomly shut off will driving, often while driving on the freeway at 65 mph and on streets at 35mph. i have been in 3 accidents as direct result, lucky no one was i hired. when it happens the steering makes a loud click and then you can't move the steering wheel at all. if you turn the car off and on again, that sometimes fixes it but often times it will immediately click again and the steering will turn off. ford staff laugh saying they get lots of complaints but say nothing is being done and give me a bill for 1200 dollars. i already spent 30k on the car and i do t have any more money to give ford so my car is worthless and dangerous to drive. someone will be killed in this car, it really is dangerous and people will die, that's a guarantee.

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 ford escape. while driving at various speeds, excessive force was required to maneuver the steering wheel. the vehicle was towed to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the steering torque sensor failed and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the vin was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 14v284000 (steering). the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 60,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 ford escape. while driving approximately 30 mph, the steering wheel seized. the failure recurred multiple times intermittently. the vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the steering column needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 20,000.

Power steering assist randomly malfunctions causing loss of power steering at both low speed and high speed both going straight or turning. this has happened multiple times. ford has a recall on this issue, however my vehicle is not listed under the recall despite being manufactured at the specific plant they identified the problem with. the recall date started one month after my vehicle was manufactured. ford is very much aware of the mechanical failure and refuses to cover the cost of repairs for their manufacturing defect that they have been aware of since 2009. the recall number is 14s05.

The power steering suddenly didn't work. upon several restarts, it began working again but sometimes stops working while the car is moving. this event has been repeated several times. there is a recall for 2008 - 2011 ford escapes but mine was not included in the recall but has the same dangerous problem as the cars that were recalled. ford will not tell me why my 2011 was excluded from the recall. the cost of repair is approximately $1,000. i don't believe i should have to pay for a dangerous defect that ford has acknowledged but won't include my car.

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 ford escape. while the vehicle was in motion, the steering wheel seized and was extremely difficult to turn more than once. the failure was randomly progressing. the contact notified the dealer of the failure and they indicated that the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 14v284000 (steering). the vehicle was to be inspected and diagnosed. the manufacturer was notified of the failure and provided no remedy. the approximate failure mileage was 126,000.
