Driving in city traffic to the grocery store 2 miles from my house, average speed 35 mph, went to stop and brake pedal went almost to floor with very little/no stopping power almost had an accident.stopped at store shut car off and then went home, it was still the same.let the car sit a couple hours then used my pro scan tool to look for codes.no codes found either stored or engine running.road tested the car with scan tool hooked up and no codes found and the brakes were operating normally.this is the second time in 6 months this has occurred.bought this 2009 ford escape xls new in 2009,it only has 30,000 miles.the first time it did this was in sept.2019 and then yesterday on feb.8 2020.i have researched this thoroughly and there are many reports of the same problem for this vehicle.this problem has been identified as the abs module due to defective internal valve seals that corrode and allow fluid pressure to by-pass causing the brake pedal to go almost to the floor similar to a faulty master cylinder.i have read that currently ford has a recall on some vehicles with the same problem but different models.the average installation repair cost is over $ 2000.00.this is a major safety defect/flaw/ issue and ford should be compelled to replace and repair the abs system on all models sharing the same or similar system experiencing this anomaly and yes it is an anomaly.no warning light on{abs} no trouble codes either stored or running test.this car is garage kept, well maintained and in like new condition.please help us,the consumer from this refusal by ford to repair and replace the most important safety item found on a vehicle, the brake abs system.what will it take? a death perhaps and a major lawsuit?this car also has other safety recalls but don't appear on your website such as,electric power steering, throttle body and some others."unsafe at any speed",sound familiar?
Tl* the contact's wife owns a 2009 ford escape. the contact stated that while his wife was driving at 65 mph, the driver was forced to make a hard stop due to a pedestrian walking on the highway. since that incident, the brakes became soft and went to floorboard when depressed. there was no warning light illuminated. the contact stated that the brake pedal had to be pumped multiple times to effectively stop the vehicle. the vehicle was taken to four independent mechanic who were unable to diagnose or repair the failure. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 100,000.
When applying the brakes the pedal goes all the way to the floor and barely stops. this has happened on city streets, country roads and highway. at first it did not do it very often, but it is now doing it at least once a week. it is very scary when trying to come to a stop and the brakes are not there. it used to get better by pumping the brakes, but this is not working all the time anymore.
On hwy, going to turn...brake pedel went to floor...pumped..little, then to floor...kept pumping...nothing this time. the worsest. have had to pump several times in past, (did pump up enough to stop) need fixed...senior & fixed income!
Starting in late 2018 when i applied my brakes they were soft and nearly went to the floor. we took it to the ford dealership and they couldn't find anything wrong. the brakes started acting up again about a month later after visiting the dealership. now they are soft spongy nearly all the time. it's scary to drive. if you have to brake suddenly they go nearly to the floor. i've gone online and found many complaints about the brakes, not only with 2009, but other years as well. many have had their master cylinder replace only to find that didn't fix the problem. please help b4 someone is injured or dies because their brakes fail !
Brakes are mushie and the peddle goes to the floor, ford has checked it and clint find a problem. yet looking on the internet there are a host of people having the same issue,
I was driving my ford escape and when i pressed my breaks there was a bang sound and the break pedal went to the floor. lost all break pressure while driving.
I was driving down the road at approx. 40mph and had to brake because a car entered my lane right in front of me. when i braked it was somewhat a hard brake. i didn't, however, slam on the brakes. i hear the abs come on and after that my brake pedal went to the floor.
Sbs module keepsfailing had master cylinder replaced in my 2009 fordescape looked on line other people having same problem should bearecall on this module nothing wrong nonabslight on low brake pedal vehicle in motion trying to stop brake pedal very spongie ## vin passed ## 2009 ford escape limited ##
While driving on a city streets the vehicle suddenly does not break normal and when trying to brake the brake petal goes all the way to the floor. i had to pump the breaks multiple times to make it stop. took the vehicle to the ford dealership and after running a diagnose they guessed is the hcu or the master cylinder that is going bad and needs to be replaced but with no certainty. (again, they are not even sure because of the code they got from the diagnose). the vehicle has no light on for breaks or anything telling you is something wrong. i could not believe that ford had not issued a recall on the vehicle, especially when i was told by ford that they had seen this problem before in the escapes, and replacing only the master cylinder would not fix the problem). without the brake system fix the vehicle was extremely unsafe to drive. this is a very important safety flaw in the 2009 escape & should be addressed to save lives and to not putting lives at risk. ford needs a to do he right thing and do a recall on their abs module.
I was driving my 2009 fo d escape last november 21, 2018 and i was to drive in when the light turn green and i was stepping on the brake pedal then suddenly my brake was on the floor. it still stop but i turned on my hazard light to be safe. it will still stop but the brake was on the floor. when i got home i checked the brake where you put the brake fluid and it was still full. i started the car and stepped on the brake pedal and it was working again. i do not know why it happened. anyone has the same problem? thank you.
On a snowy morning the brakes were applied normally and the slippery conditions caused anti-lock brakes to activate. they seemed to work normally, but after that activation the brake pedal felt very soft and would not engage the brakes until the very end of the pedal travel. the vehicle would still stop, but the brakes were unpredictable and unsafe. the problem was diagnosed as a bad hydraulic control unit (hcu) and was replaced with the abs module as a unit ($1700). the new unit required reprogramming and bleeding at the dealership ($200). because this is a safety component within a reasonable mileage (140,000 vehicle mileage), this should be addressed by the oem with at least a tsb.
Parked the 2009 escape on a friday night, everything felt perfectly normal. went to drive it at 6am the following day and the brake pedal went all the way to the floor. the master cylinder was replaced 2 times. totaling over $600 and the issue still wasn't fixed. now they say the abs hydraulic module needs replaced. the cost of the part is $1700, plus labor. how does all this with the brakes just go bad over night? seems like a lot of ford escape owners are having the same issues. so why isnt there a recall yet
The car steering column started to lock up while it was parked when you start the car the steering wheel wouldn't turn after awhile it would you were able to turn on the car in the steering wheel were function after a while the car would do it while driving the car was brought over to the dealership steering column was replaced a few months later same issues steering wheel column or steering wheel would hit when turned brought back to the dealership it was replaced the second time now all electronics relating to the brakes are having issues like brake switch starts to malfunction or brakes get locked up. the car would have troubles either parked or while driving. i bought the car from a dealership so i'm not sure if this car had prior issues to that nothing was disclosed when i purchased it. i am aware of other ford escape 2009 models have the same issue and have been recalled
While driving the steering wheel gets stuck as if i'm out of power steering fluid, which it's not. also, the wheels are shaky and feel like their about to come off. someone hit my vehicle and it completely went out. now i'm paying for a rental until gets fixed and i'm paying for the repairs instead of the company.
Brake pedal is spongy or goes to the floor, started off just here and there but now is doing it almost daily. there really should be a recall on the abs control module. sounds to me like this is a very serious problem with a lot of escape owners. are they going to wait till someone dies ( i hope it's not me) before they do something about it. very scary to drive and very expensive if you have to pay to have it fixed. i know it could be nothing else, i have replaced every other part on the braking system and it still does the same thing. i replaced rotors, drums, pads, wheel cylinders, calipers, and master cylinder. couldn't figure it out until i went online and saw all of the complaints. ford, please recall the abs module on this vehicle before someone dies because of your stupidity!! by the way, my son had an accident in this vehicle because of this problem, it was minor. but if it would of been worse i would be suing your [xxx] off. parts of this document have been redacted to protect personally identifiable information pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).
When driving vehicle the break pedal suddenly goes to floor panel and needs to be pumped to get breaks working again>
Tl* the contact's daughter owns a 2009 ford escape. on several occasions, while the vehicle was in reverse, the contact's daughter depressed the brake pedal but the vehicle failed to stop. the contact stated that his daughter continued to depress the brake pedal until the vehicle would stop. there were no warning indicators illuminated. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, but the failure could not be duplicated. the manufacturer was notified and referred the contact to nhtsa. the approximate failure mileage was 80,000. the vin was unavailable. updated 09/06/17*lj *cn
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 ford escape. while the contact's spouse was driving various speeds, the steering wheel seized and the power steering failed. while making right or left turns, the steering failed without warning on several occasions. also, when the brake pedal was depressed, the vehicle lunged forward without warning. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, but the cause of the failure could not be determined. the local ford dealer and the manufacturer were not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 124,000.
While driving abs, stability control and brake system lights come on and stay on. steering feels odd. hard/easy
It was a heavy rainy night when windshield wipers started acting up with their rhythm making it hard to see through a slightly blurred windshield then windshield & sunroof starts leaking water all over me,inside the front light switch, down into floor boards plus all in the seats !! if that wasn't enough i was slowing down to go around a few curves when brakes acted like they didn't want me to stop scary. key is hard & sticky feeling to turn in ignition cylinder therefore making the ignition switch not being able to catch any voltage at all to start the engine..after a million tries it'll finally start.. it still leaks, very hard to start & replacing brakes again...
When i accelerate my wheel feels like it's slipping and grinding and when i apply the brakes hard they seem to not want to stop keeping my abs on i feel the grinding and brake issue coming from the front wheel. when i step on the gas the front wheel hops and doesn't get traction wants to constantly slip and when i stop in snow the brakes lock up in front and abs stays on for a bit might be gear drive or bearing it's getting bad. this happens when i have to give a lot of gas to go and the abs when i need to really stop. this started a couple months after i financed it through genthe chevrolet but i work many hours and it has to be fixed before i end up stranded or in an accident. when i first test drove it it was acting up i told the salesman dave teska he told me it was fixed but he must of doped it like the interior it looked new when i bought it now it has stain spots and looks dirty i found out it was a ford fabric problem and they can't do anything. i'll never buy another vehicle again from genthe.
There has been multiple issues with this ford escape xlt. the abs light continues to come on. the wheel of the car locks when you try too turn when driving wheel. it is very dangerous. the sensors even though we replaced them keep blowing which causing the truck to decline in speed while driving in traffic. we had to turn it onto to the grass to avoid accidents. constant engine issues after we had it fixed multiple times. we are in a financial negative because of this truck. the tire sensors keep going also. these issues are happening after we have gotten this truck fixed multiple times and more dangerously while we are driving it. the brakes, steering wheel, transmission an the engine are all faulty. we have put thousands of dollars into the this vehicle. this is our transportation to work and we are behind with the notes. even when the vehicle is stationary there is a grinding, almost like the wheels want to fall off. we need this fixed we need help!!!!!
When depress brake pedal it goes to the floor before vehicle will begin stopping. this occurs almost always over the last few months. this is very unsafe condition. local ford dealership said they have seen this same issue several times and that it likely needs a new abs module/hydraulic control unit. this is a $1600 part from ford. this is an extreme cost and very unsafe condition, and i cannot afford to repair or continue unsafely drive my vehicle. please help make this a required recall.
Brakes began going all the way to the floor before stopping vehicle. had the main master cylinder replaced to the tune of $307.63, but the problem has not been solved. why hasn't there been a recall? many others are obviously having this problem. *tr
I was driving in a neighborhood and as i was approaching a stop sign, i slowly started to brake. as i came closer to the stop sign, suddenly the brake pedal felt like it just "dropped out" and i slid through the stop sign and had to slam my foot on the brake pedal all the way to the floor and thankfully was able to stop, but was in the middle of the road at this point. this was very scary and i am thankful that there were no other cars around that i could have been hit or injured. i pulled over and turned off the car and then back on. started driving again and tested the brakes, which barely worked now. i have to press the brake pedal to the floor to even start slowing down. i took it to my ford dealership and they charged me $99 just to run the diagnostic test that told me that it was my hydraulic control unit for the abs system that is bad and it would cost an additional $2,100 to replace it. they would have to order the part, but wouldn't get there for 3 days, meaning i would have to continue to drive like this for another few days because i have to get to work with this vehicle. the part did not come in for 3 weeks, not days and i had to drive around like this. i have been doing research on this to see if this has happened to anyone else, and it has. be careful of this, as it can be very dangerous and i got lucky that i was not injured. i called ford to see if there was a recall, which there wasn't (yet) and they contacted the dealership and started a case for me to see if there was anything that could be done to help me out financially. the dealership did not help me at all since i did not purchase my car there. the lady on the phone from ford was great and very helpful. she told me to hold onto my receipt b/c if there ever was a recall, (which there should be because these are people's lives at risk due to this failing part) they would refund 100% of the money. *tr
After driving over a short section of rough pavement the brake pedal was soft later making stopping difficult, and nearly running a stop sign. abs control unit was replaced at a cost of over $2000. *tr
While moving lose brakes, brakes go to floor. changed brake master cylinder and it is still doing it.
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 ford escape. while driving 30 mph, the abs, brake, and traction control warning lights illuminated. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic to be diagnosed. the contact was informed that the abs control module needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 21,300. updated 04/14/16*lj *cn
On january 18, 2016 i paid $2,829.78 for brake repairs on our 2009 ford escape (v6 / 2-wheel drive, with 136,221 miles on the odometer). the brake repairs were required because of a failure in both the abs braking module and the brake master cylinder (please see attached invoice from cornerstone ford), which caused the brake pedal to sink to the floor when brakes were applied. i could not believe that ford had not issued a recall on the vehicle, especially when 2 major brake system parts failed at the same time (i was told by cornerstone ford that they had seen this problem before in the escapes, and replacing only the master cylinder would not fix the problem, because there was fluid blow-by past the seals in both parts). without the brake system fix the vehicle was extremely unsafe to drive, especially in big lake, minnesota winter weather conditions (where i was driving the vehicle at the time of the brake failure). if i had not had the brakes fixed when i did, both my life and the lives of others could have been affected in a chain reaction collision i had on the interstate the next morning, after i had picked the vehicle up from repairs. about 6:20 am on january 19, 2016 i was traveling southbound on i-94 when traffic came to an abrupt stop. i had to immediately hit my brakes as others in front of me also did. the person behind me stopped in time, but the person behind him did not and in turn hit him and pushed him into the back of my vehicle. both vehicles behind me had to be towed from the scene, but fortunately i did not (please see attached traffic report). if the brakes on our escape had failed at the time of this accident (which is very possible, had the repairs not been made) i could have easily plowed into the vehicle(s) ahead of me and put more lives at risk. this is a very important safety flaw in the 2009 escape & should be addressed to save lives.
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 ford escape. while driving, the vehicle experienced a loss of power steering. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the power steering sensor and steering column had to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired; however, the onboard diagnostic warning indicator illuminated and the vehicle experienced a loss of power. the dealer stated that the mass air index was defective and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred. in addition, the maintenance warning indicator illuminated and the vehicle experienced a loss of power. the vehicle was repaired, but the abs, low tire pressure, traction control, and parking warning indicators illuminated. the vehicle was not taken to be diagnosed or repaired again. the manufacturer was notified of the failures. the failure mileage was 169,000. updated 10/18/16*lj *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 ford escape. the contact stated that the front brakes exhibited an abnormal noise and the brake pedal failed to engage and disengage. in addition, the steering wheel made an abnormal noise. the vehicle was taken to several independent mechanics who were unable to determine a permanent remedy to repair the vehicle. the independent mechanics bled the brake lines and replaced the master cylinder three times, but the failure continued. the contact stated that the vehicle exhibited the same symptoms as listed in nhtsa campaign number: 15e045000 (suspension). tuscaloosa ford (5801 mcfarland blvd e, tuscaloosa, al 35405, (205) 304-0719) stated that the vin was excluded from the recall and the vehicle was taken there for diagnostic testing and repairs. the manufacturer was notified of the failures. the failure mileage was not available.
When driving the traction control light, brake light, and abs light came on. these light will not go out. taking it to a mechanic, they tell me it is the abs module. the test cost $100. to replace the module will cost $1395. should this not be a warranted item for safety? the shop told me that the abs and traction control will not work until the module is replaced.
Brake at a light or stop sign at least 3 times when 2009 ford escape xlt wanted to accelerate. *tr
Entering a parking space in a grocery store lot. when i applied the brakes it seemed i got a simutaneus engine acceleration and the car surged forward hitting the facing car. *tr
Excessive wear on front brakes, replaced at 18,000 miles and again at 25,000 miles plus new calipers. vehicle's current mileage is 27,000...steers better now... difficultly inserting key in ignition unless steering is in the lock position.. current problem. *tr
While coming to a stop at a major intersection with a car in front of me, my 2009 ford escape suddenly accelerated and would not stop, despite my frantic efforts to brake the car; i swerved to my right, went through 6 inches of snow on grass curb and then went up a 5 ft. ice bank, where my wheels jammed in the ice and i stopped, sitting at nearly a 45 degree angle, 5 ft. above the road. my front bumper was mangled in the ice bank and my passenger-side mirror was broken off by a stop sign. if not for the snow bank, i would have continued into the very busy intersection, where i and other drivers would have undoubtedly been injured or killed. i want to emphasize that despite hitting the brake, the car with unintended acceleration problem, did not stop, it kept going until hitting the snow-ice bank. *tr
I was traveling on the turnpike when all at once my car jerked then lost power, i was unable to steer the car so i coasted on the median till the car allowed me to turn onto an exit ramp. my husband came and checked the truck, it started and seemed to be okay. the entire month of november the truck starts however the steering wheel is locked. i have to cut the car off and on at least 6 times while trying to turn the wheel before it unlocks and allows me to move the steering wheel. my husband called the ford dealer and was advised that the entire steering column would need to be replaced, and i would have to bear the cost. i don't feel this is fair because i researched this matter and found there are a lot of complaints about this matter. i am not able to drive the truck because i'm afraid there could be a catastrophe. i think something should be done to fix this matter. thanks *tr
Brake pedal went to the floor leaving my office. local master mechanic inspected it and said it's the brake hydraulic control unit (hcu). i drove to frontier ford dealer and the technician said it's the master cylinder which was a wrong diagnosis and after replacing the master cylinder the brake was soft and went half way to the floor. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 ford escape. the contact stated that while driving approximately 40 mph, the brake pedal traveled to the floorboard upon being depressed without warning. the vehicle was maneuvered to the side of the road where the engine was turned off. the failure persisted and the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who stated that the brake hydraulic control unit would need to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the defect. the approximate failure mileage was 60,000.
Driving and vehicle kept acting like it was stalling while trying to drive. knew that the gas was not low, so wasn't sure what the issue was. made it to destination and called mechanic. brought it in to the shop, still with intermittent stalling while driving. ran a test and said that the throttle actuator control system was stuck open - this has seemed to be a problem with ford escape vehicles. got it fixed with no incidents, but could have been worse. *tr
Vehicle has no brakes after sitting overnight, requires pumping brake pedal to correct. vehicle has been in dealer shop numerous times. dealer recently replaced master cylinder and reprogrammed abs module. vehicle still has the problem and its 2013. found numerous complaints on the web after doing search for "ford escape brake problems". fords response is that haven't seen any problems. *tr
