Tl* the contact owns a 2009 ford escape. while traveling approximately 30 mph, there was a sudden loss of power steering without warning. the contact had to merge to the side of the road, where the vehicle was turned off and restarted, which reset the computer. the failure recurred. the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 14v284000 (steering). the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure and provided no remedy. the approximate failure mileage was 100,000. updated 8/10/15*cn the consumer stated the vehicle was repaired. a new steering column was installed on 6/11/15. the consumer requested to be reimbursed for the repairs. updated 11/24/2015*js
I took my vehicle in for the power steering calibration update in march 2015. in may i was driving down a muddy road when my power steering just went out. i was on the edge of the road near a cliff and was trying to maneuver around another vehicle stuck in the mud. it could have been disastrous if i was not going so slowly. i took it to a mechanic who diagnosed it as a computer problem with the torque sensor or power steering module. all fuses, wires, and fluids were good. i was not near a ford dealer so had to drive over 300 miles without power steering to get to a dealer. the dealer told me that there were no problems when they did the update in march and that while there is currently a safety recall on the power steering system it is not for this problem (p2274) and therefore i have to pay for the repair. i did not have any problems prior to completing the recall calibration. ford needs to address this before someone gets killed.
Loss of power steering at highway speeds
Power steering assist fault message appeared on dashboard. vehicle was unable to steer left/right due to power steering malfunctioning. *tr
In july of 2014 i had the recall performed on my escape for the power steering. a few months later the power steering went out again and i returned it to the dealership that had performed the recall work and was told that if it went out again i would need to have the power steering sensor replaced. a couple of days later the power steering went out again. in april of 2015 i took it back to the dealership to have the sensor replaced and after replacing the sensor he discovered it didn't fix the problem. he spent a couple of days working with ford to figure out what was wrong as all the computers were saying it was the sensor. ford finally said it was the electronic steering column that needed replaced which was over double the price. after talking with the service manager about concerns i had with replacing that at such a high cost i learned that ford knew about issues with the original steering column components and they have changed them in the replacement parts. ford refused to work with the service manager on fixing it for me or working with the cost even though everything pointed too the sensor. ford is at serious fault knowing there are problems with the steering column and just tried to put a band aid on it with the recall that they did issue. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2009 ford escape. while driving at approximately 50 mph, the steering wheel seized without warning and caused the vehicle to strike a pothole. the vehicle was towed to a dealer. the technician diagnosed that the front passenger rim and the front suspension fractured. as result, both needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 120,000.
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 ford escape. the contact stated that while the driver was making a turn, the steering wheel became difficult to maneuver. the power steering warning light illuminated. the vehicle was serviced under the nhtsa campaign number: 14v284000 (steering) but the remedy failed to repair the vehicle. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 80,000.
When i received the recall on the powersteering in the fall of 2014, i took it into a ford dealer where they said it wasn't showing any "codes" but they re-programmed it this was 9/2014. in 2/2015 i started to notice occasionally jerking of the steering wheel while idling. on 2/23/15 it because severe jerking and shaking when the vehicle was in park or idling, i stopped by the ford dealer on 2/25 and they told me it had nothing to do with the warranty. on 3/2/15 i lost all power steering and am now paying $1000 to have the entire power steering column replaced. i have seen numerous similar comments of this problem -- what is ford going to do about it?! *tr
Ford issued a recall on escapes (recall # 14s05). the recall was related to a problem with the power steering. i brought my car to the dealer to address the recall. at the time i brought it in i was told that because there were no current problems with my power steering they were only required to calibrate it (if there had been problems they would have been required to replace it). less than one month later my power steering stopped working. my car was towed to ford. ford told me that the part had to be replaced and it had to be at my own expense because i had already brought my car in once for the recall (even though it was not replaced then, it was only calibrated). they told me that had i not brought the car in a month before, to address the recall, the replacement part would have been covered under the recall. this policy encourages drivers to not bring their car in if they get a recall in the mail, instead they should wait for the part to fail while they are driving so ford will cover the cost as part of the recall. i also feel like the only reason i ended up having a problem with the steering was because of their calibration. my escape is a 2009 so it's been on the road for 5+ years and less than one month after i bring it in for calibration the fault light comes on and it does not work. i wish i had not brought my car in for the recall and i will reconsider any future recalls. i am not the only one who has had this issue. please make ford issue a second recall so people will do the right thing, which means bringing their car in to make it safer, and getting the faulty part replaced at ford's expense as it should be. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 ford escape. the contact stated that the vehicle was repaired under nhtsa campaign number: 14v284000 (steering) but the failure persisted. the specifics of the failure were not available. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 88,000. updated 2/24/15*cn updated 9/18/2017*cn
I brought the car to the marcotte ford. they said the part that failed was the part that was recalled. the service department called ford and they told them they did their part on the recall when they reprogrammed it and will not cover the part. i then called ford and spoke with them. customer relations said they would not be able to do anything either. they would send an email to the service manager and see if he would be able to do anything to help with the cost. the service manager told me he "exhausted all his efforts". i know that i am not the only person who this has happened to and i am now out $1200.00 to fix a part that should have been fixed by the recall. this is unethical at best. *tr
Complete loss of power steering. several incidents. restarting the car sometimes fixes the problem. hard to do while driving! *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 ford escape. months after the vehicle was repaired according to nhtsa campaign number: 14v284000 (steering), the power assist fault light illuminated. the contact mentioned that the tpms light illuminated and the dealer reset both codes. the vehicle was not repaired. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for diagnostic testing. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was not available.
Power steering went completely out.while driving. car had been recall in july 2014, when a update was done for power steering assist unit. that did not correct issue ford dealership in lugoff sc that did service offered no warranty, they inspected it and stated steering parts need to be replaced at a price of $2400.00 i just purchased vehicle less than 30 days when this occurred. from the research i did i am not the only one that has gotten ripped by these faulty vehicles. something needs to be done and a recall needs to be on the steering column and other related parts that cause this issue. *tr

After a two week period of a rapidly vibrating steering column, my power steering failed after the vehicle failed to warn me. upon commuting home, there was excessive vibration in the steering column. upon starting my vehicle the following day (1/6/2015), power steering was not functional. i was able to drive my vehicle to my dealership service appointment with much effort, where the dealership told me that the steering column had failed. in may 2014, ford recalled the torque sensor located in the steering column because of power steering failures, and issued a fix to replace/reprogram the module. i had my vehicle serviced for this recall in august 2014. power steering failed, despite the replacement of this torque sensor module. thankfully, i was not driving at the time. this power steering failure could have caused an accident or other unsafe conditions.

On december 28,2014 i was pulling out of a parking lot onto a busy main street when my power steering suddenly went out almost causing an accident. i took it into my mechanic the next day and was told it was my battery, which was replaced. on march 25, 2015 i was turning onto a side street when the power steering went out again. this time my alternator was replaced. i am suspicious that everytime something electrical goes, the power steering goes out. i am not convinced the battery or the alternator were defective now. there is a recall for this issue, but my vin says mine is not recalled. *tr

Driving tried to make turn, no power steering, dealer reset modules on recall letter in july, said no other problem were found, 3 months later having the same problem! gave me an est. of $830 to fix the problem that is also stated on the recall letter! called ford one day said everything covered take to dealer. next day it's not covered! tired of the run around! hope nhtsa reads this before someone gets hurt real bad! *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 ford escape. the contact stated that the recall notice for nhtsa campaign number: 14v284 (steering) was received in october of 2014. the vehicle was taken to the dealer who performed an inspection and updated the software as listed in the recall. the contact indicated that on february 21, 2015, while driving approximately 3 mph pulling into a parking space, a wrench icon sensor suddenly appeared and the power steering suddenly failed causing the steering wheel to become very difficult to turn. after contacting the dealer and the manufacturer, the contact was informed that no additional services would be provided to the vehicle as part of the recall. the approximate failure mileage was 93,000.
I received the recall notice in the mail (14s05) effective july 25, 2014. i brought the vehicle into garber to have the recall satisfied in august in which i believe consisted of a control module software update. until this service we had had no problems with the power steering. shortly after the service, my daughter started having the problem with the power steering completely going out. because she is a college student at the university of central florida, i located the closest ford dealer to her location which is don reid ford in maitland, fl. i took it to them specifically to address the recall failure. the service manager at don reid said that the recall had already been closed out and any additional work would be at regular charge. then he said that the problem is with the steering column and it would need to be replaced. i told him that i would like to pick up the vehicle and either reschedule the repair or even have my daughter drive it to garber for the work and to address the fact that the software patch did not resolve the problem. his comment was that "this is a very dangerous matter and would not advise anyone drive the vehicle". i decided it was in our best interest to have the steering column replaced and to address the recall issue after. that is where we are today. ford is refusing to reimburse me for the steering column replacement. i have called and written to ford several times. they either make excuses or have me contact someone else who makes excuses. i want to be refunded for the steering column replacement. *js
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 ford escape. the contact stated that the steering wheel seized. the contact stated that the vehicle was previously repaired under nhtsa campaign number: 14v284000 (steering) in july of 2014 but the failure recurred. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was unknown.
After driving the car there was an abrupt loss of power steering. the steering became very hard and made it difficult to turn. the problem persisted throughout the length the of the trip. after several start ups after the vehicle would initially regain power steering for a short period of say 1/8 of a mile and it would revert back to the hard steering. after taking the vehicle to a dealer, they informed me of the issue and how it is exactly the same as a current recall, however my vin is not eligible for that recall. after speaking with ford customer service, i was told the same thing. while i am experiencing the same problem as the thousands of other vehicles, my vehicle is not eligible for the recall service. *tr
When start the vehicle i had no power steering. got to a friend house who look at the vehicle. after turn it on/off power steering came back. *tr
Vehicle stalled about 2 weeks ago. oil change light and low tire pressure light came on a week later. had maintenance done a week later. i was not notified about any recalls. noticed that the steering wheel was really loose after rotate and balance was done. took car to dealership and reported issue with steering. dealership stated that it may need alignment but could not do service until next week. put gas in car and vehicle stalled. battery and oil light came on. after a few more times was able to get it started. stalled again stalled again at stop light. made it to auto parts shop and put fuel injection fluid in tank. car stalled. finally started again. made it to repair shop. did diagnostic tests no codes reported. they examined the fuel and it was good. they guessed that the fuel pump may need replacing. i researched recalls on my vin and found that there are 2 recalls on the vehicle that were never performed. purchased vehicle in may. never received recall notices. repair shops and dealerships are not checking for recalls when diagnosing problems. *tr
I had the recent steering recall done, never had an issue. was out of town and then started the car and the wrench light was on. i went to the ford dealership and they replaced the throttle body. in less than a week now when slowing down to make a turn the car has cutoff once and the next day had no pickup after making a turn. i do not know if its related to the past recalls on the throttle body or not. *tr
Power steering failed while on the nj turnpike going about 70 mph with no warning. my car has been in the shop for over a week now, and ford has not sent the part to the dealer's repair shop where i took the car. i cannot get an answer out of the shop or out of ford. i filed a complaint with ford last week, but nothing has been done since - they promised to expedite the case, but they've done absolutely nothing. there is a tracking number on the part, but it has not arrived, nor has anyone attempted to get a replacement for the first missing part. i was given a loaner car - a 1999 mercury sable with 130k miles - which is very sketchy. after the incident, i learned, via my iphone, that this was a recall issue and that turning the car off and back on would temporarily fix the problem, which i did. i never received a recall notice from ford! *tr
First sign of problem occurred in august 2014 when i put keys in ignition it would not allow me to start car. it was locked, or frozen up. i tried to move steering wheel but could barely move it. after about 5 to 7 minutes of trying to turn wheel, it unlocked and i was able to start vehicle. next problem occurred in early september when turning wheel to back into parking space, it froze up and locked. i slowly turned wheel until it kind of unlocked. the next time the steering wheel froze was in late september. while making a right hand turn, i lost my power steering briefly. i was able to get off the road and parked for a minute or two before starting back on the drive home. it was unnerving to feel like i had no power over the car. as of yesterday, october 4th, the steering wheel vibrates when vehicle is idle. i came home from work, parked it and have not driven it since. *tr
I received the recall notice in the mail (14s05) effective july 25, 2014. i brought the vehicle to a ford dealer to have the recall satisfied in august in which i believe consisted of a control module software update. until this service we had no problems with the power steering. shortly after the service my daughter started having the problem with the power steering completely going out. because she is a college student, i located the closest ford dealer to her location which is don reid ford in maitland, fl. i took it to them specifically to address the recall failure. the service manager at don reid said that the recall had already been closed out and any additional work would be at regular charge. then he said that the problem is with the steering column and it would need to be replaced. i told him that i would like to pick up the vehicle and either reschedule the repair or even have my daughter drive it to the original dealer for the work and to address the fact that the software patch did not resolve the problem. his comment was that "this is a very dangerous matter and would not advise anyone drive the vehicle". i decided it was in our best interest to have the steering column replaced and to address the recall issue after. the repair was $1,000. ford refuses to reimburse me for the expenses. now sometimes when my daughter tries to start the car by turning the key nothing happens. she removes the key, reinserts it and it will work. i have called and spoken to several ford customer service reps who basically agree with my assessment that the steering column replacement be included in the remedy for the steering failure. they also said that the service manager would have to discuss this with the regional service manager and submit the repair as the recall. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 ford escape. the contact received notification of nhtsa campaign number: 14v284000 (steering). the vehicle was taken to the dealer and they indicated that the repair was not required. the dealer did not indicate if the software was updated for the power steering control module (pscm) and the instrument cluster module nor did they specify if the torque sensor signal had a failure. months later, the power steering failed and the steering wheel became extremely tight and difficult to turn left or right. the failure had to apply force to the steering wheel in order to turn. the vehicle was taken back to the dealer where it was indicated that the steering column needed to be replaced. the vin was not available. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was not available.
Excessive wear on front brakes, replaced at 18,000 miles and again at 25,000 miles plus new calipers. vehicle's current mileage is 27,000...steers better now... difficultly inserting key in ignition unless steering is in the lock position.. current problem. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 ford escape. the contact received notification of nhtsa campaign number: 14v284000 (power steering). the vehicle was taken to a dealer where the recall repair was declined due to the contact not experiencing a failure. the contact felt that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. the manufacturer was not made aware of the issue. the vehicle was not repaired. the contact did not experience a failure.
Seems to accelerate unpredictably when turning. no incidents yet, but concerning. also, my mechanic says the steering motor is leaking. my ford was made in missouri. i do not know if this related to the recall of escapes made in kansas. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 ford escape. the contact stated that when making a left or right turn, the steering wheel became difficult to turn without warning. in addition, the contact stated that there was an abnormal noise and vibration coming from the steering wheel. the vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was serviced under nhtsa campaign number: 14v284000 (steering) however, the failure recurred. the vehicle was taken back to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the steering column needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 105,000.
I'm a teacher and on my way home from school, the power steering went out while the car was in motion. it returned approximately a mile later and then went out again. when my wife came home from work, she followed me to a mechanic, and on the drive there, the power steering went out again. there is no indication or warning light to indicate when it's about to happen and the situation is incredibly dangerous to us and surrounding drivers. we're seeing online that this is a common issue with ford escapes especially in 2008 and 2009 models. *tr
Upon starting the vehicle the steering wheel remained locked, as if the power steering went out. i had to stop and restart the vehicle 5-6 times before the power steering would return to normal. i have seen many complaints regarding this issue when i researched it. this is a dangerous defect, because of the difficulty in steering the vehicle when the power steering is out. i also realize that there is no power steering fluid because this is an electrical system. i just purchased this vehicle from a ford dealership, and do not have the money (upwards of $1500 to replace the steering column. other vehicles that have this problem, kias, toyotas, are reporting this defect on their vehicle as a recall and paying for replacements for their customers. i am very disappointed in ford for not handling this issue and will never buy another ford again! *tr
With no warning, the electric power steering stopped working on the vehicle. it was an intermittent failure as it took 2 days for the dealership to replicate it. when it failed for me/us, luckily i was pulling out of a parking lot, very close to the dealership, and not traveling at high speeds or in significant traffic. it was so difficult to turn the steering wheel that my arm muscles were sore. looking at some online forums, this does not appear to be an isolated failure to our vehicle. my/our concern is 1) why is there no warning/indication that the power steering is/will be failing? it is electric, so there is no fluid to check or maintain. 2) what if i hadn't been in a parking lot and had been traveling at a higher speed? the effort required to maneuver the vehicle was extreme, and had i needed to change direction quickly, i would not have been able to. *tr
Upon start up, the car has issues with power steering, locking the wheel and preventing it from steering or moving. after a few minutes with the car turned off, the power steering has returned thus far, but we've had 4 incidents of this within the past week. we've read of others having similar issues while driving and we're fearful of the same happening to us. we're fearful of our safety and the safety of others but are fearful that we can't afford the cost of repair. until we have issues while the car is in motion, we'll continue to drive it small distances. *js
Hard to turn at low speeds. *js
Loss of power steering. steering wheel has been shaking recently (notice while idle). today i started my car, i had 0 power steering. apparently if you shut off the engine and start it again it again you may be lucky and have power steering. i learned this with a simple google search. many who have escapes with high mileage have the same experience. this should be a recall, seems very dangerous since from all i have read it happens while driving. "a sudden loss of power steering". this also is a very expensive part, 1,400.00-1,700.00 to fix. please look into this. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 ford escape. the contact stated that the vehicle was difficult to steer while traveling at various speeds. the contact also mentioned that the steering wheel seized several times. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer who stated that the steering wheel position sensor needed to be replaced. the vehicle was being repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 100,500.
I left work and everything was ok. i made 1 stop after about an hour of driving. after getting back in the car to back out of a driveway, there was no power steering. i drove the vehicle home like this. when i got home, i turned the car off then back on and the power steering came back. since the first occurrence, this has happened about everyday since then. most recently, while the car is sitting still and idling, like at a stop light, the steering wheel will move a little on its own. it wiggles back and forth. i believe that if this were to happen while driving that this would be a major safety concern. i have read of quite a few people experiencing the same problems, maybe even a little worse. i feel that this should definitely be looked into. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 ford escape. while driving 60 mph, the steering wheel began to shake violently and became inoperable while the power steering assist light was illuminated. the vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the steering torque sensor failed and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the contact stated that the vehicle was repaired under nhtsa campaign number: 14v284000 (steering). the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was unknown.
