We have classified the 520 complaints from 2009 Ford Escape about STEERING into the following categories.
Lost electrical assist power steering, found out is a manufacturer defect that ford refuses to fix
In 2014, ford had an electric power steering recall, 14s05, for escapes. i had a dealership perform the code reprogramming in october 2014. four years later, the power steering went out. there are less than 50,000 miles on the car so there's not a lot of wear and tear on the vehicle. i called the dealership and ford customer service and they both said that since i brought the car in for the recall, there is nothing more they will do. this seems like it was a known issue at ford and they found a way around having to fix all the cars they made with faulty power steering. i'm the original owner of the escape so i know that it has been lightly used.
Power steering stopped working while driving on a city street and then power steering came back. when i shut off the vehicle and restarted it, the power steering is still not working. i have not driven the car since because of safety concerns. i was told by ford that my escape was not part of the national recall.
Purchased the vehicle in january 2017. approximately mid december 2018 a code popped up on my dash "power steering assist fault" and the steering wheel shakes as i drive. i code is continuously on. i contacted ford, who tell me there was a recall on the 2009 ford escape in 2016 for this exact code, but because my vehicle was not assembled in kansas city, that they cannot fix it under the recall and i would have to pay for it out of pocket. i don't feel this is right, as this is a safety issue and could be dangerous if i lose my power steering while on the road. *tt*jb
Experienced power steering cutting out intermittently while driving, especially when parking. when this occurred, vehicle was difficult to maneuver at speeds less than 15 mph. dealer notes "replaced steering torque angle sensor" for code p2278. vin was not included in recall of 2008-2011 ford escapes experiencing this issue.
Power steering failed and stopped working while drivingu
Power steering went out while driving with no warning so there was a recall on some but not all escapes on a city street while i was turning at an intersection
I called ford in octoberfor recall #14s05, because my steering wheel began to stiffen up to the point that i was unable to drive it. i was told by ford that my vehicle did not fall in that batch of recalls. ford stated i would be responsible for any work done. i had credit with firestone so fortunately, i was able to take it there for this stiff steering. firestone did complete a brake inspection and replaced the alternator, and air tire pressure sensor on oct 11, 2018. i have had my car towed home, then to one car repair place and then to firestone car care service center causing me to spend cash money for one tow, and one by triple aaa both in one day, and now this recent tow exhausted all my tows with triple aaa. i can't re-tow until oct. 15, 2018 for renewal, but run the risk if is the same problem they still may not tow meaning additional money out of my pocket on a retired pension. on dec. 5, 2018 stiff steering issue returned. i was about to head for elgin, illinois and on the expressway, and noticed when changing lanes the steering wheel bagan to stiffen. i pulled over and had to determine what was i going to do. i managed to get back on expressway turn around and return to my aunt's home, and then the wheel got extremely stiff especially when turning. i parked the vehicle and called for a tow to firestone since i thought it was something they may have done incorrectly. firestone called me and stated that this issue was beyond their capability. it is a defect, and i need to take it to ford.
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 ford escape. when the vehicle was started, the contact found that the power steering assist failed. the contact was able to drive the vehicle to ganley ford (2835 barber road, norton, oh 44203, (800) 942-6305) where it was diagnosed that the power steering assist angle malfunctioned. the dealer stated that the vin was excluded from nhtsa campaign number: 14v284000 (steering). the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not contacted. the failure mileage was 144,874.
I was on my to work one morning entering the interstate on ramp and i lost power steering which almost caused me to have an accident. making it extremely hard to steer the vehicle. upon taking it to my local ford dealership they told me my power steering torque control module was failing. this was a recall on escapes from 2008 / 2011, but they said my particular vin was not part of the recall??? upon further investigation myself i'm seeing where numerous ford owners were having the same issue and like myself had to pay for this repair out of pocket...not cheap i may add. it seems that someone will have to loose their life as a result of this defect before a recall is issued for (all) models in this time frame... what a horrible thing for ford to put their consumers and their families in jepordy due to these defective parts. i would like to see full recall on all models between this time frame. also vehicles to be fixed at fords expense before someone looses a loved one. and reimburse those of us who have had it fixed at our expense....
Tl* the contact a 2009 ford escape. while the contact's daughter was driving 30 mph, the steering went into manual mode and the steering wheel became difficult to turn. as a result, the vehicle ran off the road. there were no warning indicators illuminated. the contact called manley motors (1800 n state st, belvidere, il 61008, (888) 388-4940) and was informed of the diagnostic testing fees. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was contacted and stated that the vehicle was repaired in 2014 per nhtsa campaign number: 14v284000 (steering). the failure mileage was unknown. *tt consumer stated daughter owns vehicle and only solution is to replace the steering column.*jb
I was driving on a highway and made a left turn, while steering turning back to the right it felt as though it wanted to lock but eventually broke and went to normal. this has happened 4 different times since vehicle purchased. took it to my local ford dealership in fredericksburg, va, they told me after testing, i needed a steering column epas at the tune of $1400. they said you could not just replace the epas part on my particular vehicle and it was not one of the ones recalled earlier. after looking online and checking with another dealer, i have learned that the epas part can be replaced but apparently ford will not let their service techs just replace that part. this is not right, i have paid a lot for this vehicle, new, and the replacement of that steering is more than i receive a month from disability. thankfully i have not been in a situation of an accident. what can we as consumers do to demand that ford take ownership and help out their loyal customers? i am loosing more and more faith in ford (3 out of my 4) service visits showed that the service tech put a check mark that the power steering fluid was ok?????? another problem, in feb. 2018 service visit, they said my tread was in the yellow. back again for service in aug. 2018, showed tread in green??? this is why i went back for this check up on all things at not charge after speaking to the service manager. if i had not taken it back for a revisit, i probably would not have found out about the steering! i will say my last visit was the best i have had to date, thanks to the service tech. still i am not sure i would every purchase another ford!
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 ford escape. after starting the vehicle and driving in reverse, the "power steering assist fault" message suddenly displayed and the steering wheel became very difficult to turn in either direction. the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the steering wheel torque sensor was faulty and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure and did not assist. the local dealer was not notified. the failure mileage was 100,000.
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 ford escape. while attempting to park the vehicle, the steering assist default warning indicator illuminated. the contact was unable to maneuver the vehicle and had it towed to lindsay ford (located at 11250 veirs mill rd, wheaton, md 20902, (888) 457-7005) to be diagnosed. the dealer repaired the vehicle per nhtsa campaign number: 14v284000 (steering); however, only the software update was performed, which was insufficient. the part was replaced at the cost of the owner. the manufacturer was informed of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 130,000.
Was part of recall 14s05 by ford they replaced a sensor but vehicle still gets stuck in manual steering mode and will not allow you to steer, so the electric power steering never works
Several times while driving/turning, the car would ding and a very brief message would flash on the console. couldn't read it fast enough before it went away. today got in after work and the power steering assist fault message came on and there is no power steering. there is a recall for this for this make and model year, but apparently not for every vehicle. searching online found multiple other people talking about the same problem in 2009 escapes (or other years included in that recall) that were not covered in the recall. wondering if the recall should be expanded. this is a very expensive fix and not something that is very likely to go out otherwise.
Steering very hard to move. vehicle was working find drove home from work parked it. the next day got in the car and started it went to move steering wheel it was very hard to move. i called ford dealer and asked if there was a recall for the steering she asked for vin and it has no recall for that vin. vehicle is at ford dealer for schedule steering repair.
Loss of power steering while in motion exiting highway.
Takata recall at one time there was a recall for the power steering, that is what is wrong with my 2009 escape. i can be driving down the road and one second i have power steering and the next second my steering wheel will lock up. if it didn't get fixed when there was a recall then can i take it back to be fixed again
Electric power steering will lock up without warning while in motion
I started my vehicle after work and i had no power steering at all. i drive an hour one way ro work everyday with no issues except now this. i did some research online and found their may be a recall. when i called ford they said that my vin # had no recalls and there was nothing they can help me with.
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 ford escape. while driving 35 mph, the contact attempted to make a right turn and the steering wheel seized without warning. the contact took the vehicle to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the power steering failed and needed to be replaced. the contact called lindsay ford (260 w elm st, lebanon, mo 65536, (888) 352-0403) to schedule a second diagnostic test. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 125,000. *tt*jb consumer stated entire steering column has to be replaced.*jb
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 ford escape. while operating the vehicle, the power steering suddenly malfunctioned and the steering wheel became very difficult to turn in either direction. after restarting the engine, the vehicle operated normally. the failure was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer and local dealer were not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 32,000. *dt consumer stated she does believe the recall action was performed. updated 02/01/19*jb
Power steering went out with no warning when backing out of a parking space. other vin #s of my year and assembly plant are covered by recall, but not mine. landers ford collierville assessed problem as steering angel torque sensor malfunction and pscm internally faulty. obviously my vin should be included in a recall for free repair by ford.
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 ford escape. while driving approximately 20 mph, the steering ability seized without warning. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who determined that the power steering column failed and needed replacement. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 113,000.

While driving with my whole family. 2 little girls 12 and 6 and thankfully my husband driving and not me, we were returning a rental car when my car flashed out of no where going about 45mph power steering assist fault upon my research; there has been certain vehicles recalled. come on ford! whatever the default is, can you at least give us owners insight on this stuff to get it fixed? is this some kind of money maker for you all? to set up certain timers for this stuff to happen? i'm just so thanmf that i wasn't driving. i would have not had the power my husband does to overtake the wheel. please please please do something!
Message on dashboard: power steering assist fault. steering wheel is locked. not able to turn wheel. car is not able to be driven. was able to verify a recall from 2014. which i never was notified of this. this is the first time i've had this problem. recall# 14v28400. ford recall#14s05. my car was in motion when message appeared on dashboard. i was able to drive the car home safely. soon as i pulled in my driveway. the car locked. i have not been able to drive since. this occurred on 10/21/2018.
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 ford escape. while driving 40 mph, the steering wheel seized. the contact was able to pull the vehicle over safely into a parking lot. the contact waited for a moment and was able to drive home. there were no warning indicators illuminated. the vehicle was taken to beau townsend ford (1020 w national rd, vandalia, oh 45377, (937) 898-5841) where the power steering was reset. the dealer diagnosed that a new steering column needed to be installed. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and did not assist. the failure mileage was 160,000.
On 10/6/18 i began experiencing a sudden stiffness in my steering wheel as i turned the corner on a main city street. at this point i had to pull over cautiously three blocks away into a gas station and call triple aaa to get towed home. the triple aaa employee attempted to drive it around the gas station noting also that there is an on and off stiffness with the steering wheel. i got to get my vehicle towed again since its saturday night, and no one is open. it will need to be towed ford or another repair shop. based on the recall information, i could possibly not belong in job#1 from kansas city, missouri. i am hoping this recall applies to my vehicle. i will call your office on monday as well as my ford dealership. i hope that i can resolve this issue quickly and safely. it was a very scary experience for me. thank you for your time and consideration in this matter.
My vehicle began experiencing a stiff steering wheel after leaving walmart saturday 10/6/19. it was then towed 10/9/19 to firestone at which time they installed an alternator to supposedly to eliminate the stiff steering wheel, which was fine until 1/5/2019 at which time upon driving on the expressway i-290 heading to elgin from bellwood at 45 miles per hour or so i began experiencing a stiff steering wheel again. i had to turn around with great difficulty and fearfully back to bellwood and park vehicle at aunt's home and wait for another tow back to firestone again. i was told on 1/7/19 by fausto, service manager of firestone that is a defect. they informed me that there is a recall with ford regarding this matter. i informed them that the recall didn't apply to my particular vehicle, but in another batch recall #14s05. so, i had my vehicle towed to ford on 1/11/2019. i was previously told in early october, 2019 by ford that my vehicle did not fall under the recall. i don't get why i am stuck with this bill for something that i perceive as a defect and should be added to the recall list in my opinion. ultimately, on today 1/11/2019 i was charged $1,578 plus the cost of an alternator on 10/11/2018 to firestone pursuant to the stiff steering wheel issue. this doesn't seem fair that because i am not in a particular batch i have to assume this responsibility, but i know that i am not alone. i purchased my vehicle at 17,781 miles so i virtually have only driven this vehicle on the neighborhood streets. it has never been out of town, and once to south holland, illinois in all of this time. please can someone help pursue this recall in the best interest of myself and other consumers of this ford manufacturing product defect. its stated on my receipt that it is code b81342 internal fault. see attachments. thank you.
A few days ago while driving on local roads at approx 30 mph, the power steering cut out and the battery light lit. i pulled over re-started car, drove another 2 miles and same happened while going around a bend in road causing me to partially go into oncoming lane. this happened 3 more times while bringing car to repair shop and now told i need a complete steering column due to all computerized steering controls being located in the column. is ford doing anything to rectify this obvious common and dangerous problem ? i am the original owner of this vehicle.
I took my vehicle in for a recall on the power steering, they updated the software and the problem was temporarily fixed. weeks later the power steering failed completely while driving almost resulting in a crash. the ford dealership has stated that the recall is closed and the failure of the power steering is not their fault, charging thousands for a repair of the entire steering column.
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 ford escape. while pulling into a parking space, the power steering suddenly malfunctioned and the steering wheel became very difficult to turn in either direction. during the failure, the "power steering assist fault" message displayed. the failure was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer and local dealer (jack kain ford, 3405 lexington rd, versailles, kentucky) were notified of the failure, but no assistance was offered. the contact was informed that the vehicle was serviced in 2014 per an unknown nhtsa campaign. the failure mileage was 200,000.
Power steering went out as i was driving down the road. continues to go in and out. i see the recall for certain vehicles. obvious my car is having the same issue as recalled vehicles. only 74k miles.
The power steering intermently goes out it either works when i start the car or it doesn't. i was told i have to replace the entire steering column since that is where all of the electrical parts are located. ford says this is not under there recall and it will be $1350 to replace. this seems to be an issue from what i am seeing ford wants to take no responsibility for this
Power steering has been going out over the last several months. i have to put all my strength into barely being able to turn the steering wheel. this has occurred at high speeds on the interstate without warning, nearly causing an accident. it has occurred immediately upon starting vehicle. as of now, we have not been able to get it to work at all for nearly a week. usually, turning vehicle on and off over and over will at some point get the power steering to work but not anymore. this is a huge safety issue happening with an unacceptable number of ford escapes and ford will not acknowledge!!! is it going to take terribly injury or death before this is addressed?
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 ford escape. while driving 55 mph, the steering seized. the vehicle was taken to dean arbour ford (1001 u.s. 23 north, alpena, mi 49707, 888-232-8051) where it was diagnosed that the steering column was fractured. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was notified and informed the contact that they could not assist. the failure mileage was approximately 63,224. *tt updated 11/29/18*jb
Happened three times in 20 minutes on 08/16/2018: vehicle was in motion each time, suddenly and without warning engine stopped, all warning lights lit up on dashboard and lost complete control of steering, speed control. wheels locked up and almost caused multiple accidents. had to pull over and turn on vehicle again.
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 ford escape. while the vehicle was stationary and while driving various speeds, the power steering failed on several occasions and was difficult to turn left or right. the contact restarted the vehicle continuously in an effort to correct the failure. the contact stated that the failure was intermittent and also recurred while in reverse gear. a dealer was not made aware of the failure. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and provided the contact with case number: cas-15831770. the failure mileage was unknown.
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 ford escape. when the contact started the vehicle and shifted into drive, the power steering failed. the vehicle was serviced at theodore robins ford (2060 harbor blvd, costa mesa, ca 92627, 800-494-0756) per nhtsa campaign number: 16v284000 (steering), but the steering failure continued. the manufacturer was notified and informed the contact that the recall repair had already been performed. the failure mileage was approximately 120,000.
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 ford escape. while driving at an unknown speed, the steering wheel became difficult to steer. the contact stated that the failure occurred intermittently. there was no warning indicator illuminated. the contact called bill brown ford at (734) 399-4244 (located at 32222 plymouth rd, livonia, mi 48150) and was informed that the repair for nhtsa campaign number: 14v28400 (steering) was a one time remedy. the manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to nhtsa. the approximate failure mileage was 112,000.
Power steering elec assist went out and must use manual steering.
Was driving and power steering assist stopped working when pulling into a parking lot.. almost caused a accident.
When driving with my children the electronic power steering went out in my 2009 ford escape as i was passing a semi truck, causing me to nearly crash into a guard rail at 70mph on the highway. upon research of my vehicle i found that there is a recall on my vehicle for this and ford is refusing to make the repair. this is my only vehicle used to support my family.
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 ford escape. while driving 5 mph in reverse, the steering wheel became difficult to turn to the left. the vehicle was taken to allan vigil ford of fayetteville (located at 275 glynn st n, fayetteville, ga 30214, (770) 461-1151) where it was diagnosed that the power steering column needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified. the failure mileage was 107,000.
As i was driving down the freeway my vehicles power steering went out and went to manual control and i had my grandchildren in the vehicle at the time. after doing some research i found out that there had been a recall for this issue but only on models out of kansas city plant. aparently this isn't the case, after research there has been hundreds if not thousands of complaints with the same issue and told the same thing by ford that it's not covered unless it came from kansas city plant. this repair cost me 2,228 dollars and only 249 dollars was labor. the one part from the ford dealer was 1564 which should have been covered since ford knows this is a known issue. i also had to replace my ignition switch because it caused it to have an issue.
My daughter would initially have to turn the car on and off anywhere from 8-30 times to try to get the power steering to kick in but eventually she was driving and it just stopped working for good. though power steering shows as , "fixed" after a software update on 2014,my daughter was nearly in a fatal accident when the power steering went suddenly. i saw that there were two possible error codes-one was a software code which that software update would fix but if you have the issue with two different codes then the whole steering column has toeplaced. we have both codes and yet ford denied it because of the plant at which it was made. it did say though that some cars made at our plant were included in the second recall. i am certain it slipped through the cracks, as have many others i'm sure. i want ford to stand by its product and i don't want some other family to find out when their daughter does die in an accident. please review all cars that should be included
I have been having my power steering go out recently. it started on august 4, 2018. when i turn on my vehicle, i have had no power steering, and i have had to turn the vehicle off and back on several times to get the power steering to work again. i am concerned that it may go out while i am driving, and most of my daily commute is on the highway.
The power steering is not operating correctly. there was a recall on this model but not my vehicles vin. this is ridiculous. i have kids and cant drive a vehicle with steering issues and dont understand why only certain vins were given the recall. my car was manufactured at the kansas city plant where after researching is where the recalls were from
