Problems with 2008 Ford Escape SERVICE BRAKES

On average, the 2008 Ford Escape starts to “feel” problems with the SERVICE BRAKES and its various aspects after 129 689 miles.

Recently reported SERVICE BRAKES problems on 2008 Ford Escape

On 1/9/20 the car had its last dangerous malfunction of so many sense i purchased the vehicle from a dealership 10/18. the car was parked in a beach parking lot. as my son was getting ready to leave the parking lot he turned car on put car in drive slightly stepped on gas to begin pulling out and the car surged and accelerated full speed by itself. he lost all steering and had no breaks. he had absolutely no control of the vehicle. it went full speed into a parked car about 15 ft away! both cars were totaled. all 3 people involved were injured. there was 2 people in parked car and my son who was burrowing my car. previous to this accident the escape has had so many dangerous malfunctions. some being total steering loss while i was driving 45mph .car was towed and fixed covered by factory recall. another shock snapped and punctured my fuel tank. my mechanic said i dodged death by driving . he said car was a ticking bomb. ive replaced 2 abs sensors at different times because they failed and caused break pedel to vibrate and made it very hard to stop. another wheel bearing and wheel compartment due to total rust and corrosion of under body. all these things happened in only a little over a year sense purchasing this vehicle from mid cape moters for 6000$ in october. *ln *tr *js

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 ford escape. the contact stated that when the driver started the engine, the brake warning light illuminated. the contact also advised that the brake pedal felt loose when it was engaged. the vehicle was taken to an unknown mechanic that performed a diagnostic and advised that the vehicle brake hydraulic control unit failed. the contact also mentioned that the brake hydraulic control unit was replaced several times and the repair did not correct the failure. the contact also advised that that several codes was received when the diagnostic was performed code 1491 and code u2023. the manufacturer was contacted. the manufacturer advised the contact that the vehicle was not included in the brake recall. the failure mileage was 159,000.

On multiple occasions went to press brake pedal but pedal doesn't depress all the way down, as if there was a block of wood or something preventing it. "regen brake disabled" light would appear on dash. braking power adversely affected during these episodes. causing to press down on brake very hard just to stop. on some occasions the multiple attempts at pressing of break would cause pedal to depress a little more and on some times non depressing brake pedal sensation would persist, with adverse brake affect.... sometimes experiencing a hypersensitivity to pressing on brake with a choppy braking impact and sometimes experiencing a very limited braking effect, causing one to almost have to "stand up" on the break in order to prevent hitting whomever might be in front. i recall starting to experience this initially about a year ago - roughly apr 2018 est.. between then and recently sometimes braking would be more problemsome then other times the experiences seem to wax and wain but about mid december 2019 after parking at work in the morning and returning to the car to go back home. it appeared the emergency parking brake i engaged was stuck. when i turned the vehicle on i got the same illuminated regens brake disabled signal on the dash and it appeared i couldn't get the car out of park. i had to leave vehicle at work. i was away from work a week. upon return the car started without the regen brake disabled signal but when i release emergency brake & shifted car into reverse, regens brake disable came on again, i was still able to drive however and did, slow and guarded but did. now a new symptom engaged - i drove to a stop sign and when braking at the light and pulling off, brakes felt still engaged somewhat and progressively driving felt this way. i drove a bit more but shortly had to pull over and call a tow truck. was told by mechs master cylinder nds replacg

While driving it was hard to push on brakes and when i took my foot off of the gas it vehicle would stop. so i took it to mechanic and he said my brakes went w caliber or wheel bearing. a few weeks later same thing happen all needed replaced now again its happened. this is to much something has to be wrong. it would pull back and burn the brakes up. i mean it was hard to get it two 25 miles per hour. this is the 3rd time. this happened while i was driving each time. the vehicle felt like it was pulling back, hard to go forward then hard to push on brakes then the brakes stated smoking.

When i bought the car, it was over 12 years old and had approximately 137k miles. i experienced recurring brake problems about a month after purchasing the car: on some days, when starting the car the abs failure light and the red brake failure light would remain illuminated and the "check brake system" message would appear. sometimes restarting the car cleared the errors, but most of the time they would remain the entire day. the following day the failures often cleared up. while these failure modes were active, the brake pedal had some pressure behind it, but braking took longer and strong braking led to wheels locking up. (like in the days before abs) over time, the failure modes persisted longer to the point where over the past two weeks, there was only one period of a half-hour where the car did not exhibit the failure condition. in addition, the "regen brakes disabled" message also started appearing, but that message may be deceptive because the battery status gauge shows a strong charge indication when the brakes are applied. in all cases, the failure modes appeared immediately on startup and persisted while the car was running. in the shop, these diagnostic codes were reported: c1313, c1478, c1480, c1526. the mechanic instructed me to take the car to a ford dealer because he was not convinced that replacing the master cylinder (an expense exceeding $2000) would fix the problem.

Brakes go to the floor and i almost had to stand on the brake pedal to stop. drove it back home, and scanned it, abs codes are leading to the hydraulic control unit. after research, it's a pricey repair. i just cant believe ford has not stepped up, recalled and fixed the issue.

Abs light came on over a year ago. since then i've had it serviced 3 times and the brakes replaced. now it's in for inspection and can't pass. my experience and mechanic experiences routine moments when the brakes do not engage even when the pedal is floored. they've bled the brakes and now are trying to explore other potential solutions. as of now 5 days without a car or any apparent solution to the diagnosis. mechanic will not pass since the brakes fail without warning...it is still with the mechanic so no documentation as of yet.

2008 ford escape hybrid awd, 197000 regen brakes disabled notice at vehicle start and in rush hour traffic. soft brakes, nearly could not stop. very unsafe in traffic or, in the case that it happens in a high-speed situation, could be deadly. confirmed hcu and abs system. the fact that this has so many complaints with different years and models of hybrid vehicles with no resolution is unacceptable.

Brake peddle goes to the floor sometimes after a hard braking event. after pumping the brake peddle a few times, they come back. they sometimes go out when hitting a bump in the road also.again they come back after some vigorous pumping of the peddle. fluid level is good. i haven't wrecked it yet, but i can for see a passable problem in the future.

Recently purchased 2008 ford escape hybrid. on august 19th, when i turned the car on with approximately 161,200 miles, the "check abs" light came on. while driving within city traffic with the "check abs" light on, the car had sluggish braking. applying the brake would slow down the vehicle, but the brake pedal would need to be pressed hard for the final 10-15 feet of the stop. the next morning, when i turned the car on again, the abs light had disappeared and braking had returned to normal. the car is currently being checked at virginia tire & auto 6620 backlick road, springfield, va 22150. it seems very dangerous that the abs can fail intermittently, and a severe defect in the brakes should be recalled and repaired immediately by ford.

All associated brake failure warning messages appear on dash. took it to the local dealership where they diagnosed it as a hydraulic control unit failure. repairs quoted at $5000.

Car was braking erroneously as i was driving. misdiagnosed twice, it was ultimately diagnosed as abs module failure. this put a strain on my engine and transmission and of course, the brakes. this is a very expensive repair if you get a new module and even with a rebuilt one. the initial rebuilt one as also faulty. repair place struggled to get a unit because they are so in demand, i rebuilt my transmission less than three years ago m(which also shouldn't have happened) and now it is damaged. even with a used unit, the total repair was $1200, not counting the rental car after the first replacement module failed. as this is a brake issue, it was recommended that i report it.

Brake pedal travels almost to floor. had brakes replaced, master cylinder replaced. all brake lines bled and still having same problem.

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 ford escape. the contact stated that the vehicle lost electric power steering (eps) ability, which caused the contact to have to maneuver the steering wheel with extreme difficulty. the eps warning indicator flashed when the failure occurred. an independent mechanic located a diagnostic trouble code for the steering shaft torque sensor. the torque sensor needed to be replaced the abs control module needed to be reprogrammed. dick masheter ford (1090 s hamilton rd, columbus, oh 43227, (614) 861-7150) and the manufacturer indicated that the vehicle received a software update in 2014 for nhtsa campaign number: 14v284000 (steering); however, the remedy failed. the vehicle was not included in nhtsa action number: dp15001 (steering); however, the failure was related. the manufacturer provided no assistance other than suggesting the dealer replace the part. the approximate failure mileage was 139,000.

I have had several occasions in the past few months when the brakes went almost to the floor and came back up after i pumped them. they continued doing this every time i stopped until i got home. i have had a mechanic check out the brake system each time and he can find nothing wrong with the brakes. his only suggestions is that "maybe" the abs module is trying to go out and if it happens again, pull over, turn off the car and turn it back on and see if that fixes it for the time being. the only common element i can think of is that one time, i had driven over a very rough spot in the road, one time i had just hit a pothole, and one time i was making a turn as i hit a rough spot in the road. the mechanic thought this was making the abs system think it needed to engage but offered no suggestions of how to fix the issue other than what i mentioned above.

The front passenger brake caliper keeps seizing. i replaced it in july along with the rotor and pads and now its started seizing yet again. the steering shaft u joint wears out easy and causes the steering to become loose.

I just purchased this car. it has 18,000 miles on it . after driving for one week. i noticed the car brakes have become very hard to stop. almost to the point where i have to press the pedal to the floor. i was driving about 45 mph when a car turned in front of my and i had to hit the brakes. i had an extreme delay in the brakes and almost smashed into the car in front . luckily there was another lane to merge into or i could have been in a major accident. i now always have to have my foot ready for the emergency brake because i am afraid the brakes will go out. i took the car to a ford dealership and they are telling me that the car has a faulty hcu. the cost to replace is over 5000 dollars. how does a car with 18k miles require a part that cost more than an engine? this car is not safe to drive. upon research we noticed that thousands of these cars have the same braking issue and its a hazard. a recall must be issued and ford needs to own up to their faulty car before someone gets killed. this car is dangerous and we will be taking a huge loss and disposing it if there is no recall issued.

Ford escape - brakes started to get very very mushy. once i pushed on the brakes, the pedal would keep dropping and not be responsive. luckily i had enough car lengths in front of me and was going slowly enough on neighborhood streets to stop without injuring anything. luckily i was not on the highway! this is extremely dangerous while driving, so i took my car to a local shop and they replaced the master cylinder. that still did not resolve the issue so they said the hydraulic control unit is faulty and i will not be able to drive my car (as the brakes could completely fail at any time). took the car to ford and they said it was the master cylinder (just replaced) and sad if it wasn't that - it was the hydraulic control unit. they did nothing to resolve the issue. this is extremely unsafe and i cannot drive my car since the brakes are failing!

When you take the transmission is sluggish on changing gears and after a change out of logan her into high gear is sykes working fine wine step on the brakes the truck starts bouncing feels like the front end is about to fall out from under the truck and i told you to the ford company and they said there's no any recall on my vin number but i have a part that is listed under the government site is good that's what's going on with my vehicle is a ford escape 2008.

Abs brakes engaging while driving at low speeds constantly.

Vehicle was in motion, getting ready to stop at the end of my driveway when the brakes barely braked, and i had to push the pedal all the way to the floor to make a complete stop. it's like that all the time now. took it to a mechanic who replaced the brake master cylinder. did not fix the problem. mechanic said it's the abs system and that he sees that problem with a lot of fords.

The breaks continue to fail. has all new pads, rotors and the master cylender replaced. when coming to a stop the breaks vibrate and then need to push the petal to the floor to be able to slowly slow down. i then need to pump visiously up to 5 times to get the breaks to temporarily work again. was then told by my mechanic the abs is the issue. i have researched this issue with the yr of my vehicle to find that this is a serious issue with many 08 ford escapes and have yet to find a recal for this deady malfunction. my car only has 135000 miles and this is a safety issue that ford needs to fix with a recall asap.

Abs light on, regen brakes disabled, 5,000.00 to fix it, brakes work poorly and engine revs too high

The tone ring on the front left side cracked, causing traction control and abs light to go on, and caused instability and traction issues at low speeds.

Well known 2008 ford escape hybrid anti lock brake problem but when i brought car to hempstead ford 301n. franklin street, hempstead n.y.11550. supervisior name maria (888)457-8442 service dept claim to havent heard of the problem.aslo i was there for a coolant pump recall and all they did was check my antifreeze and never change coolant pump.waste of my time.i called the ford company phone number, does not speak english. ford is playing phone tag. ford hybrid brakes are the worst i ever experience in a vehicle.regenerating braking manufacture defect ! they don"t want to recalled because anti lock brakes cost money.ford motor company please do the right thing and fix recall anti lock brakes for 2008 ford escape hybrid. i was coming to a stop at red light and went right through it ending up into the intersection.lucky it was not a busy road or else i would not be here reporting this problem.to mention ...not that many 2008 ford escape hybrid on the road you are not going to lose a lot of money instead gain new customers for correcting your problem.i would accept a settlement or a trade in for working vehicle.

My 2008 ford escape hybrid would not stop with both feet pushing to the floor. check brake system and regen brake disabled as my car hit the car in front of me. this could have been much worse for both me and the vehicle in front of me. i'm also a biker and i could have killed someone on a bike or a pedestrian. this is very scary and the fact that i was unaware this is a known issue, i had no idea what just happened and why. i have four fords and now i'm concerned to drive them.

Ok as i was making a right turn off the highway i felt my steering wheel tighing up to point i have to a make sudden stop because of the loss steering.look it the message center lost message showing passages air bag off. showing check brake system.showing battery light on lost thing going message center.

When the vehicle was started, there was an unusual motor-like sound for a second-or-so coming from the front of the vehicle. the abs light and the parking brake light came on even though the parking brake was not engaged. the brake pedal had a spongy feel and the brakes were very ineffective. applying the brakes caused the right-front corner of the vehicle to dive. heavy application of the brakes caused the right-front tire to skid. it appeared that only the right-front brakes were working. when the vehicle was turned off, a high-pitched noise continued to come from the engine compartment. after turning the ignition on and off a few times, the high-pitched sound had ceased. after that, a driving test showed that the brakes had returned to working normally. this entire scenario has occurred multiple times.

Without any warning the abs and traction control lights came on the dash and the car acted like it was sliding on ice and the abs system was working on clear roadway. when trying to take back off after stopping the car it felt like the car lost power. shut the car down and it started working correctly, but it is an intermittent problem, and has happened three more times since it first happened the day before. just test driving the car in the neighborhood the abs system feels like it is engaging on clear roads.

Warning icon appears on dash for abs. message says "check brake system", then "regen braking disabled". brakes are very ineffective, requires lots of pressure to stop. increase in electronics clicks from under the hood when starting the car. there is also a continuous high pitched noise from under the hood, like an electronic alarm at very low volume. after topping off brake fluid, problem went away for a few weeks, but it showed up again when i started the car tonight.

Tl* the contact owned a 2008 ford escape. while driving 25 mph, the brake pedal was depressed to the floorboard, but the brakes failed to respond. as a result, the contact crashed into the rear of a volkswagen vehicle. the driver's side air bag deployed. the contact sustained injuries to the hands, neck, and forearm. the contact also sustained a whiplash, which did not require medical attention. a police report was filed. the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic and deemed a total loss. the local dealer was not contacted. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was notified and opened case number: cas14048964. the contact was referred to nhtsa. the failure mileage was approximately 148,000.

Daughter was driving home from her teaching position in marshalltown ia to ankeny ia. she called me frantic because her brakes failed. pedal went all the way to the floor and the car would not stop called a tow truck and the vehicle went to tires plus in ankeny. they recommended an abs brake bleed per some tsps they received from ford. while waiting for the tow...my daughter started her car several times and the brakes recovered. by the time the tow truck arrived the brakes were working fine. this happened in dec 2016 as well

I was dropping my child off at school. i put my vehicle in park and when i pulled out and went to use my brake the pedal went to the floor and the pedal vibrated like abs was engaged. i was able to stop but it was very slowly. i was going under 10 mph.when i started to drive again my abs and traction control lights came on and you could hear the sound of the traction control being engaged. i had to stop two more times on my way home and was able to do so by driving only 5 mph with my four ways on. the traction control sound was intermittent and the vehicle would not accelerate properly. the brake pedal continued to go to the floor and vibrate. the brakes continued to not work properly and make sounds. i was only 1 mile from home and was able to get home without an accident. this happened in a residential area while i was making a short trip under 3 miles both ways. it happened right after i put the vehicle in drive and pulled out. after doing some reasearch this appears to be a common problem with the hydraulic braking system. i was very lucky that i was not involved in accident and that i was driving slow at the time. i just dropped my child off at school. had this occurred at another time we could have been seriously injured or killed as well as anyone else that may have been involved. i have called the ford dealership today to have my vehicle looked at and am waiting to hear back from them. since this is a common and serious problem i feel that ford should take responsibility and issue a recall on this before someone is killed.

2008 ford escape. consumer writes in regards to issue with abs tone ring. *ld the consumer stated the dealer was notified, but did not offer any assistance. *js

My awd 2008 ford escape hybridv, with around 64,000 miles, started having braking problems, when the brake and abs cluster lights turned on when the car started. when i shift into any gear, the "regen brake disabled" warning comes on. i tried to revers at 5 mph and the car would barely brake. i was able to brake, but the brakes were spongy, veering to the left slightly. i went to a local auto shop and they scanned for any error codes. i received the following: c1524 brake pedal sensor cal. incomplete, c1480 r/f brake pressure control malf., c1313 brake hydraulic press. transducer malf., p0685 eng. control module power relay control, and u0418 invalid data rcvd from control module. my cousin was able to clear the codes to see if we restarted the car and deove around if the same errors would pop back up and they did. i have read online where thousands, if not more, were having the same hydraulic/braking problems that could cost upwards of $5000 to fix. some even reported that replacing the master cylinder didnt fix the problem. i have personally had two occassions where my car would barely stop no matter how hard i pressed down on the brake pedal. also, when my vehicle is turned off, with the key taken out, the right front brake module or censor is emitting a high-pitched hum for several minutes when nothing is turned on. please investigate this issue further as it seems like a very common issue with similar year model hybrids.

Abs system causes brakes to lock up.not all the time. never know when it will happen.

Hit brakes hard and abs hydraulic control unit failed, two inches from very bad wreck that could have killed people.

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 ford escape. the contact stated that while driving at 55 mph and when the contact attempted to apply the brake pedal, the brake pedal required excessive force in order to respond. the vehicle was not taken to a dealer and was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 100,000.

Continual brake failure.. brake pedal goes to floor. will stop after reapplied but will feel mushy! had master cylinder, one wheel cylinder replaced and they lasted a few weeks with same scenario happening again! local brake specialty shop can't get to the bottom of problem! ford should have recall to get to bottom of this problem before someone gets hurt or killed.

When trying to brake the brake petal goes all the way to the floor. took my vehicle in for service and repair. after spending hundreds of dollars for a new master cylinder, rotors, calibers, brake pads bleeding if the brakes multiple times we were then told that the abs module had two valves stuck in the open position. this part should last the lifetime of the car and there have been several complaints to ford about this safety issue with this make and module. ford needs a to do he right thing and do a recall on their abs module.

Front brake line kink or compressed and would not fully release brake while driving. brake superheated. needed tow replaced both front brake lines. *tr

The abs light and brake light appeared on the instrument panel while driving on a state highway. check brake system light appeared as a digital read out on the instrument panel. turned off the engine believing it to be a 'reset' issue. the abs light and brake light did not come on again. two days later, upon backing up these lights appeared again on the instrument panel. called local ford dealership to determine the problem. dealership performed abs selftest and got code c1313-ao and u2023-a0. the codes indicated that the hcu (hydraulic control unit) required replacement. dealership quoted $5,900.00 repair cost to replace hcu sensor. the dealership did not caution us to not drive the car and we remain concerned about safe driving. he said, "the brakes will get mushy and we will eventually losing braking power." checked ford website to determine whether a recall for this safety issue had been posted. no recall by ford noted at this time. a review of online posts indicates that many escape hybrid owners have encountered the same problem and highway safety is concerning to owners. *tr

Abs control module / hydraulic control unit hcu has gone out on my 2008 ford escape hybrid. it has left me with very little braking ability. if this was to happen on the hwy it could have been catastrophic. it is a $6,000 repair and it apparently requires a full replacement of the $4,000 part, the abs control module / hcu. ford needs to take ownership of this issue and correct the problem with their faulty hcus in these cars!

A reoccurring soft brake pedal issue. seems to occur after and hard braking incident where the abs is engaged. after a few days to a week the pedal travel and feel returns to normal. this has been a continual problem with the vehicle for the last two years that we have owned it.

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 ford escape. while driving 25 mph, the brake pedal was depressed and traveled to the floorboard. the contact stated that the vehicle was taken to haldeman ford (607 nj-33, trenton, nj 08619, (800) 939-6659) to be diagnosed, but the mechanic was unable to retrieve a fault code or duplicate the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the contact stated that the failure was intermittent. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 71,101.

Was driving the vehicle and after applying the brakes. the abs warning light came on, plus the information display indicated "check brake system" and "regen brake disabled". i was still able to brake, but needed to apply more pressure to stop and there was a new noise when i depressed the brakes. i took the vehicle to my local ford dealer, after the technician had checked the vehicle they indicated that i needed a new hcu unit and the estimated cost was $5,200+

While breaking hard on rough road the breaks will loose pressure and go soft. they will eventually return to normal after a few times after the car is restarted.

A 2008 ford escape hybrid with only 33,585 miles was purchased on 06/02/16. the brakes were not working so i took it to a ford dealership. they bled the brakes which made them work. a 20 year old girl was driving this vehicle and the brakes went completely out again only after 16 miles from ford doing the repairs. she almost wrecked but managed to control the vehicle and pull off on the side of the road. she could have seriously gotten injured or been killed or killed someone else. the ford dealership towed the vehicle to the dealership at no cost and inspected the vehicle. they are now saying it will cost approximately $4600.00 to repair this vehicle in order for the brakes to work properly. this is a huge safety hazard putting many lives at risks for serious injury and/or death. there are numerous complaints about the hybrid braking system defects. ford should be responsible to issue a recall on this defect immediately and be responsible for the repairs to this braking system at no cost to the owner. most individuals and especially a 20 year old girl cannot afford a $4600.00 repair. she should have a safe, dependable, and affordable vehicle .

Abs and traction control lights came on. when braking, it took longer to stop and was like you were stopping on ice. when starting out again, it took awhile for my vehicle to accelerate again and i had to pull off the road until it could start again. i had my daughter and granddaughter in vehicle. this presented a dangerous situation as it impeded braking ability plus the hesitation with the acceleration could cause an accident

I was coming to a stop sign and almost rear ended someone as the abs light and brake lights lit up on my dashboard, along with "service brake system". my foot went right to the floor to stop the truck. this continued to happen till i went to the dealership where i was told this is common and requires a $ 6000 new hydraulic control unit. also i was told that you still have brakes just ned a lot more pressure. i'm not only one with this complaint. very dangerous when you lose all brake pressure. this happens more often now and every time i restart the car it goes away and all works well till next time.
