I was driving to work and the power steering suddenly stopped working without any warning. it was terrifying! i parked the car. later i started it and drove home in a cold sweat praying it did not happen again! *tr

I own a 2008 ford escape. my wife was at work and when she started to drive home noticed the steering wheel difficult to steer. luckily she was driving straight on the highway on the way home. she did notice vibration of the steering wheel. i took it for a test drive and noticed it was very difficult to steer or turn at low speeds. also the steering/powertrain wrench light had come lit. it was evident the steering assist had malfunctioned. after some research i became aware of an electric power assist safety recall on 2008-2011 ford escapes. which is the exact same issue i'm having on my 2008 ford escape. i contacted the local ford dealer and was told that according to the vin number there was no recall announced for my vehicle. this makes exactly no sense to me because its the exact same issue and vehicle for which the recall was made. i'm basically on my own to fix at this point. *tr

Ford had a 2015 recall for power steering problems, during which this vehicle was checked. two months ago my mechanic checked my steering because of a noise and advised me not to drive it on the highway. as i was driving into my driveway the power steering went out. what if this went out at highway speeds and had a baby in the car? reading online other people's experiences with power steering problems the car shouldn't be driven. ford should be made to extend their recalls and give trade in credit to get these cars off the road. they are a danger to all. i had all the fuses checked and unhooked the battery. everything points to the electric assisted power steering or such which is a $1200 repair that is not guaranteed to last long. *tr

We were driving on the freeway on 10/12/16 when all of a sudden without warning the steering went completely out. i couldn't turn right or left. i had my family (wife, 2 children (1 autistic) and dog) in the vehicle. we barely avoided a couple accidents and a wall. managed to push the vehicle to safety. i had a tow truck pick it up, take it to the dealer. turns out the rack and pinion went out. the ford dealer service advisor said he'd help me out with the price which was estimated at 1400 dollars. it took the dealer 6 days to have my vehicle ready. they said there was nothing they can do. they are an independent dealer. to take my issue up with ford. i contacted the number that they gave me and the customer service rep at ford said that the decision made by ford motor company was just to notate that this happened. there was nothing they can do. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 ford escape. the contact stated that the vehicle was repaired per nhtsa campaign number: 14v284000 (steering) by bob maxey ford of howell, inc. (2798 e grand river ave, howell, mi 48843, (517) 545-5700); however, the remedy failed. while reversing out of a parking space, the electric power steering (eps) failed. the eps indicator flashed and the steering wheel seized. the vehicle was turned off and back on, but the eps continued to fail intermittently. bob maxey ford of howell and brighton ford (8240 grand river ave, brighton, mi 48114, (810) 227-1171) were contacted and indicated that further diagnostic testing was needed to determine if the steering column needed to be replaced. the contact stated that the wrench symbol was also flashing on the instrument panel. the vehicle was not included in nhtsa action number: dp15001 (steering). the manufacturer was notified of the failures. the failure mileage was not available.

08 ford escape power steering: car was stationary at time of failure. car was purchased for transportation to and from college, daughter was driving home and stopped at a restaurant. when she was leaving the restaurant she could not steer the vehicle and almost struck several cars in parking lot. she had to call me (father) to come get vehicle and drive it home. i am a large male who works out and i had trouble steering this vehicle. she is unable to continue to use this vehicle. if this failure would have happened 10 min. earlier it would have caused her to have a collision. attempted to have dealer repair car disclosed a recall on this problem, and a recall had been done on this issue on this vehicle on 06-24-2014. when i asked, they refused to recheck recall. the first recall involved a simple reprogramming of the steering sensor. now i have been told it will be around $1500.00 and they must replace the entire steering shaft.

In 2014 received recall for steering and it was "reprogrammed" 0n 9/25/2016 complete failure of steering which was supposed to be "fixed" under the recall. now since recall is closed, actual problem is not covered under the recall. quoted 1500 to replace steering column. the failure occured when leaving a gas station, which made steering next to impossible. called ford the next day only to find out since the original recall was performed on escape that this issue is not covered even though this is the failure the recall was issued for

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 ford escape. the contact stated that there was a random sudden loss of power steering that progressed for over two years. the dealer was notified several times and was unable to replicate and diagnose the failure. in addition, the dealer failed to replace the steering column and inspect the torque sensor. the contact was unable to confirm if the instrument cluster module was inspected. the contact later received notification of nhtsa campaign number: 14v284000 (steering). the dealer only provided a software update for the pscm and the failure continued. the vehicle was taken back to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the steering column needed to be replaced. the manufacturer was notified of the failure, but provided no recommendation or solution other than the contact replacing the steering column with a newly designed steering column. the approximate failure mileage was 71,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 ford escape. while driving approximately 75 mph, the steering wheel seized without warning. the contact observed an abnormal odor and pulled the vehicle over. the contact shut off and restarted the vehicle, but the failure recurred. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, but was not diagnosed nor repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the issue. the failure mileage was 77,850.

I purchased my 2008?ford escape last year 2015. i have replaced both cv axils on each side and i had my steering column replaced. i purchased the car with 95,000 miles on it at a great deal of $8,900. i then found out why it was so cheap from such a trusted dealership. the dealership was closing in the next 2 weeks. it closed shortly after my purchase and a new ford dealership opened in its place. through out the last few weeks my car has not been driving correctly, especially on the highway. i took a closer look and noticed that no matter my speed my car will not go above 3rd gear. my power tran light came on today. i have read on other sights that there were recalls on this issue. i do not think these issues were fixed while being recalled. the related i've done so far have not been cheap by any means. after a year (even less 2 of the above cases) i should not be having these issues. http://m.carcomplaints.com/ford/escape/2008/recalls/ the above sight was my reference tara

Power steering failure. daughter was driving and just became hard to steer. i brought it to my regular mechanic they informed us that there was a problem but it required us to bring it to the dealership for repairs due to the problem needing electronic programming. i looked everything up and found a recall and called the dealership. when i brought my vehicle in to be repaired i was contacted and told that the entire power steering column needed to be replaced and its not part of the recall. how can a recall affect so many people but not cover the real problem that everyone is having. with so many consumers complaining that they had to have the entire power steering column replaced (of course for a very high price, and only at the ford dealership) the nhtsa or some government body needs to force ford to recall the whole column. i am 100% for a class action law suit.

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 ford escape. the contact stated that the vehicle hesitated to start without warning. the vehicle eventually started after ten attempts. in addition, while driving 25 mph, the vehicle veered to the right independently. the vehicle was diagnosed and the technician stated that the driver side abs tone ring was fractured and the steering column needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified. the approximate failure mileage was 155,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 ford escape. while driving 5 mph, the contact lost control of the steering wheel and the steering warning indicator illuminated. the vehicle was diagnosed as needing a new steering column. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the contact referenced nhtsa campaign number: 14v284000 (steering); however, the vin was not included. the failure mileage was approximately 100,000. updated 08/02/16*lj the consumer stated after the steering column was replaced, she had to purchase a throttle control at a cost of $800, because the vehicle was accelerating on its own.

At a stop sign the steering wheel started to shimmy about a quarter of an inch after about two hours it beeped then ten minutes later i shut off my vehicle and an hour later when i started the vehicle it came up with a power steering fault on the dash and it has not worked since this happened on may 7th 2016

Complete power steering loss after recall performed. while turning a right hand corner at 50mph all power steering failed making it near impossible to steer vehical other then straight on across lane.. this failure caused me to almost hit another vehical head on thankfully the other car was paying attention and avoided me due to fact i could not steer and no harm brought to my 2 children.. called for dealer and was told recall was proformed and the failure was my problem not theres. at a bill of over $3000.

After taking the vehicle to the dealership to resolve recall 14s05 via a software update. the same problem occurs resulting in vibrations in the steering column and loss.of power steering assist. dealership contends that the issue was closed via thw software update and now says that must pay out of pocket to replace the steering column. i do not feel that ford has adequately addressed the underlying issue with the software update as i ave reseaeched and found numerous reports of the same issues after the update with ford refusing to own up to the issue.

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 ford escape. the contact stated that the power steering failed. the steering wheel needed excessive force in order to steer the vehicle. the vehicle was previously serviced under nhtsa campaign number: 14v284000 (steering) however, failed to remedy the failure. the vehicle was taken back to the dealer where it was informed that the pscm needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 86,000.

I had the recall issue for the power steering addressed and was told it only needed a software update. 5000 miles later the steering wheel began to shake constantly while parked or moving. now my wife lost total power steering while driving. we called the dealer who gave us the software update and we were told there is nothing else they can do to fix the problem without us paying for it.

Low speed turns, electric power assist fails to assist in returning wheels to straight ahead position. wheels can be brought back to forward position with some effort. happens consistently, every day at low speeds when there is higher torque on the steering column.

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 ford escape. while driving at lower speeds, the steering made an abnormal noise and shook abnormally. when the failure occurred, the power steering assist default warning indicator illuminated. prior to this failure, the vehicle was repaired according to nhtsa campaign number: 14v284000 (steering) where the technician stated that they performed a minor reprogramming of the power steering control module. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 130,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 ford escape. while driving approximately 60 mph, the power steering suddenly malfunctioned and the steering wheel became very difficult to turn. the cause of the failure was not diagnosed nor repaired. the manfacturer was notified of the failure. the contact was informed that the vehicle was repaired under nhtsa campaign number: 14v28400 (steering) in 2015, but the failure recurred in 2016. the failure mileage was 144,000.

We took our ford motor company 2008 escape to the dealer for recall nhtsa 14v284000 or ford #14s05. the dealer reprogrammed the power steering module. prior to that we had no problems whatsoever with the steering. 4 months later the steering has failed. from what i am reading at several locations on the internet this is a common problem. i am asking the nhtsa to look at this problem closer. my opinion is there should be an additional recall that addresses this issue. if you've had a similar issue i urge you to contact ford and file a complaint and contact the nhtsa and voice your concern. i was told by ford it is my responsibility to fix the vehicle and they are offering no assistance.

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 ford escape. while driving 45 mph, the steering wheel made a clicking sound and shook without warning. approximately 30 seconds later, the steering wheel became very difficult to turn and failed. the next morning, when the vehicle was started, the maintenance warning light remained illuminated. the vehicle was previously repaired per a recall in august of 2014 for the same issue, but the failure recurred. the vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the power steering torque sensor needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 52,000.

While driving my 2008 ford escape on the highway the steering wheel began to shake violently, then shortly after the power steering system failed. i looked into this issue and found a recall for 2008-2011 ford escape and mercury mariner models however after contacting ford they informed me that the vehicle had already been part of the recall and this is unrelated.

My vehicle was driving fine when it started chiming. i didn't have any idea why it was making the noise. it did this 3 times and then a small wrench signal showed up on the panel. i was driving home when all of this happened. all of a sudden i had no steering! scared me to death. i was able to make it home, thank goodness! there are recalls on this problem, but not my vin number!

July 2014 i received a recall notice regarding torque sensor/steering column, i took it in to the dealership (stivers ford/lincoln in waukee iowa) where they took approx. 5 mins to do whatever it was they were to do regarding the recall. i was not having any issues with my car at that time. approx. 3 weeks ago (march 2016) i started having problems with my steering wheel shaking and moving back/forth at all times when driving the vehicle and when idling, on highway and streets and being parked, along with odd noises when driving. i took my vehicle in to the dealership (stivers ford/lincoln in waukee iowa) yesterday (march 29, 2016) to find out what was wrong, they did a diagnostic test and found that i needed a new torque sensor and steering column. i told them about the recall of the exact same issue from july 2014, the guy in the service dept (steve) called ford motors and they told him they would not cover the costs. i called ford motors today (march 30, 2016) at their retail number, the female told me they would not cover the costs and said that the recall had expired and i should of had it fixed then. (there was no issues at the time of the recall with my vehicle and i did take it in to the dealership at the time i received the recall letter). ford motors knew/knows of the defaulting parts (hence the recall in 2014), they should cover these parts now. most cars do not go out right at the time of a recall. my vehicle took over a year to go out since the recall, i have found ford motors to be very dishonest. the service man i spoke with told me he was with me on this issue and believed that ford motors should cover these costs for repairs of the torque sensor and steering column. recall letter states: alternatively, the dealer may need to replace the torque sensor or the steering column. this service will be performed free of charge (parts and labor.

We had our vehicle recalled. we took it to taylor ford in chandler oklahoma, to have it serviced for the steering problem. i went to drive the car and now there is no power steering. i have read several complaints about this, that after ford had so called updated the programing on the steering system, they fail. so instead of replacing the parts that needed to be fixed they update the computer and then when down the road, you have to pay for the problem yourself. taylor ford told my wife that there was noting wrong with the vehicle. they have since gone out of business. how do i get this problem taken care right this time. they should have taken care of it right the first time. so ford is just putting band aids on their problems and then saying it was fixed and charging the comsumer later to fix it correctly. ford needs to fix this problem. the vehicle was put in drive and that is when the power steering did not work. i had just dropped my 6 year old son off at school.

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 ford escape. while driving 5 mph, the power steering failed without warning. the vehicle was towed to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the torque sensor needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. prior to the second repair, the vehicle was previously repaired under nhtsa campaign number: 14v284000 (steering); however, the failure recurred. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 98,000. updated 05/04/16*lj .....updated 05-12/16 *bf updated 11/21/2017*js *tr *bf

Had ford recall #14v284000 (ford #14s05) performed in april 2015 - which covered power steering control module. was told "nothing wrong, updated software". march 2016 steering failed. dealer diagnosed as failed torque sensor which supposedly is one of the items covered under recall. however was told this was no longer covered under recall - because the recall was "closed out" on our vehicle the day they found nothing wrong. called ford customer service 1-800-392-3673 who said same thing. total scam! if it's not broke the day you take it in then they don't replace anything. side stepping potentially defective steering components with a bogus software fix. then later exposed to the safety risk of driving with steering components that may (and in this case) did fail. again i feel this is a total sham!

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 ford escape. while operating the vehicle, the power steering became inoperable and the steering wheel became difficult to maneuver. the maintenance sensor warning light illuminated. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the power steering torque sensor failed and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the contact indicated that the vehicle was serviced under nhtsa campaign number: 14v284000 (power steering); however, the failure recurred the same day. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 74,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 ford escape. while driving 65 mph, the steering wheel became difficult to maneuver without warning. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the steering column failed and needed to be replaced. the failure occurred after the vehicle was serviced under nhtsa campaign number: 14v284000 (steering). the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 148,377.

I took my 2008 ford escape in for a recall on the electric powering steering on october 28, 2015. the ford dealer reprogrammed the electric power steering. lss..when i took the 2008 ford escape in for the recall i was under the impression that the sensor was going to be replaced. however the ford dealer said they only had to reprogram it. february 26, 2016 i took my 2008 ford escape to be checked at a auto repair shop. i was told i needed a sensor for the electic power steering. the reason i took it to be checked was the steering wheel would shake and it was very hard to turn. also it is hard to start. when you turn it over, it want do anything. then when you try again it would start. i feel ford took advantage of me. they had to know just reprogramming the electric power steering was not enough. now i am left to pay for the repairs that should have been taken care of when i took it in for the recall. it seems like 2 or 3 months after i got this escape paid for it went downhill. i have had it in and out of theshop every ssince.it is repair after repair on this vehicle. its heartbreaking! especially when you have to pay out hundreds and even over a thousand for continuous repairs. the current issue with the steering wheel shaken would happen sitting still at a light, etc. also the problem with the vehicle not wanting to start and having to retry to start the vehicle happened when you would try to start the vehicle to go somewhere. the issue being hard to turn happens when you are turning left or right on the road.

Power steering went out while stationary as i was fixing to leave on an in town trip
