We have classified the 71 complaints from 2005 Ford Escape about POWER TRAIN into the following categories.
The electric power steering system failed in the middle of an intersection and almost caused an accident involving other vehicles.
When slowing down vehicle to stop for a car ahead of you, stopping at stop sign, or slowing down to make a turn, vehicle engine will stop leaving driver in a serious and compromising position, vehicle has to be placed in neutral or park to restart and occupant must shift into drive quickly and accelerate quickly so engine will not kill, once the vehicle warms up it will kill right away, i'm afraid this is going to happen and be in an intersection and hit or hit from behind, vehicle has been well maintained and transmission fluids are exactly the level they should be at
Driving 65 mph on the interstate my 05 escape began to skip, stall & died, anti theft light came on. i drive for 20 miles slow with it skipping and stalling. when i left off on gas it would continue to run until i made it to safe place. attempted to drive for repair on state hwy it stalled and went dead. ford dealership reprog keys- repaired drive off, barely off the lot and it quit again. now i see this is a manufactures issue with 05 escapes after an online search. new ford diagnosis- new plugs & coil pack, intake gasket. 170,000 miles. my alarm randomly goes off too which could be related to electrical issues. ford motor is liable if someone's vehicle stalls and is killed due to this problem they know about but have not corrected or recalled.
Gear shift lever stuck in park- vehicle starts runs fine can not get out of park. had been difficult several times but got it working after several episodes off and on now stuck in off street parking at senior center. appt made forepair 10-17 skillman fordgreenwood in good car everything else dependable
While going onto a freeway onramp at approximately 45 miles per hour, the vehicle suddenly lost all power, all lights came on, the ability to steer and brake was affected by total power loss. the vehicle did not display any issues leading up to this but nearly resulted in an accident by the inability to control the vehicle and get it off to the side of the road. after being towed, the auto shop diagnosed a p0354, p0351, p0355, p0352 ignition coils, and pcm failure. my research shows there are multiple claims of this occurring and it is definitely a safety issue.

One day i was driving home on the interstate and the o/d off light started flashing & it acted like it didn't want to change gears at all. i stopped got gas and light stayed on. then as i started driving again it went away. after parking at home overnight i attempted to go reverse & it acted like it was in neutral. after some back and forth with the shifter it let me go in into reverse only when i revving up and then it started having issues in shifting out of park. in searching this issue there are many people experiencing this issue, end has caused a few accidents.
Engine oil leak can not be traced. serviced by ford since 2004 when i bought the vehicle brand new. only serviced by a ford dealer service department. i was told because of the mileage, 130,047, and age the engine needs replaced. dye test conducted by ford service and no leaks were found after driving 500 miles and returning to the ford service department to check for leaks as advised by ford service department. leaving the vehicle overnight, ford service mechanic indicates after sitting overnight it smokes excessively on cold startup. i have replicated the cold startup procedure everyday in cold weather observing the tail pipe exhaust as my wife starts the engine since january 2018. there has never been a sign of smoke or excessive smoke from the engine tail pipe exhaust.

I was coming back to home from work driving on highway at 55-60 mph and suddenly my car starts decelerating itself and i was forced to pull it over on the shoulder, i was lucky that not one hit me. i completely turned the engine off and then i tried to start again, it started making cranking sound but did not start completely, so i had to call the towing truck to tow the car to my home. it could have been worse, i am lucky to be alive, i am not sure how can the vehicle can stall in the middle of the driving. it was scary. *tr
Started off from a light and the car hesitated concerned gave it gas and it stuttered,i rolled to a stop and had it towed to a repair shop.evidently the powertrain computer module is bad several complaints that ford put the wrong spark plugs in this escape which after time ruins the pcm.seriously why hasn't a recall been issued for this problem? had i been traveling faster would have been an accident as i was in morning traffic.now looking at a $1000 in repair bills.ford needs to fix this problem. *tr

Driving north on hwy 41 when car stalled and i had to direct it off road without power steering or brakes. was almost hit from behind. was informed by mechanic that it was the throttle body. refer to ford consumer satisfaction program 13n03. *tr
I have a 2005 ford escape 4wd manual transmission. i had to replace the whole transmission about 5 years due to transmission failure. i now have a problem with the manual transmission again. i can not get the transmission to shift into reverse. the forward gears work fine. i have seen on the internet a high incidence of transmission problems in the 2005 ford escape transmission. there should be a recall on this. *tr
Traveling on the highway at 55 miles per hour and the entire engine stalled and cut off. i had the car towed to a local shop where they told me that 3 out of the 6 coils basically were not working and the pcm/computer was completely shot, they wanted over $1600 at dealership to fix this. ford had apparently distributed a bulletin about this problem to the dealerships but not their customers - who this problem affects the most. i was lucky that i was able to pull over to the side of the road and not hit anyone or get killed. i can't imagine how many people this has affected because it is all over the internet. the repair ended up costing well over $1000 because of the spark plugs that ford knew were faulty years ago. a simple changing of the spark plugs instead of six coils. i see no difference in gm having to recall vehicles that shut off on the highway and ford having to recall these vehicles for basically the same reason and reimburse their customers, our cars are shutting off too. *tr
I purchased this vehicle from byers kia 9 months ago. i recently just made my 8th payment on it. 1 month after purchasing this vehicle i noticed a slight vibration from 15-25 mph. well on sunday november 3rd my drive shaft quit working. we installed a u joint hoping that would solve the problem. it only made it worse. i have the dealership working to fix this problem now. i don't feel im responsible for this issue seeing it should have been caught prior to me buying this truck . *tr
My ford escape 2005 was working well without any warning. suddenly after turning the car shut down. after restarting there was not enough power. went to ford authorized repair center and was told this was a known problem with a tsb 10 -18-10, faulty spark plugs make radio frequency interference which make coils on plugs and power train control module (pcm) to malfunction. all six spark plugs and coils were replaced and the problem persists, only solution is to change pcm. this problem can happen at any time, after any mileage, without any notice, these vehicles should be re-called and ford should pay for these as it is a defect from fabric. *jb
The gas pedal was stuck after mashing on it hard it broke loose when approching a stop sign i stopped and try to go again but gas pedal was stuck why is there not a recall. i also have transmission and rearend problems but they both are costly repairs i am concerned about the gas pedal please fix it before someone gets hurt there really should be a recall on it
Driving 55 mph on highway, car sounded like it downshifted into much lower gear (very loud) with jerky motion, immediately lost power, was climbing large hill, coasted to side of road in heavy traffic, lost power steering, made horrific grinding sound, and then stopped. idled for 30-45 seconds, all dashlights came on before dying on highway. i have reviewed carcomplaints.com on this model escape, they are notorious for pcm computer going with no notice. my mechanic informs me today that is the problem, cost for repair is about $2,000.00, not covered by the extended warranty i purchased. this is a well documented issue that clearly creates safety issues when driving at high rates of speed, with no warning. the car was "fine" by all other accounts, this happened out of no where. *tr
I purchased the vehicle knowing the ecm had been replaced recently... about 3 months of purchasing the vehicle my check emissions light came on...losing gas mileage, car stalled out a few times, and dealership said it was the ecm again... approximately august 2013. one year later august 2014 same issue again... ecm replaced again.. when i turn the key on, not starting it the check emission comes on and the dealership tells me this is normal.. my gas mileage is 12 mpg and im afraid it is happening again soon.. i don't know what to do and i was told it may be the wiring harness causing this issue.. i don't know why no one will get to the route of the problem why the computer in my escape keeps failing. they wont let me trade it in since it is not any value to them anymore.. *tr
Transmission failed and had to be replaced. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford escape. the contact stated that while driving 65 mph, the vehicle began to stutter and stalled. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was determined that the transmission control module failed and needed to be replaced. the failure also caused fuel to flood the catalytic converter. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure and the current mileages were 126,178. *tr
Vehicle was shipped to germany due to military duty. a week later after delivered, my wife was driving it going down a short hill when the vehicle turned off completely and brakes were not functioning. my wife had to stop the vehicle with parking brake. after that the engine was losing power and the alarm was going off very often. we drove the vehicle few occasions and it turned off couple of times again.i ordered the part and replaced it in 2014. the vehicle is running fine, however the alarm still going off and engine light is on again on dashboard. at this point i do not know if the vehicle is indicating the same problem or something new. *tr
I bought this used car from a dealer, i test drove it before buying ,and it was great. same day when i got home it showed an issue, the car would stall when put into gear. either reverse or drive, unless u hit the gas pedal at the same time you put gear to keep it on. and it would also stall at any stop i make. i have to keep one foot on break and one on the gas. and the car might be running perfect for 2 or 3 days, and it goes back to stalling. i sign the car out the dealer as is, so i cant take it to them. i decided taking it to ford for a $97 diagnostic. they said it needs throttle body or try to clean it. they are expensive, so i went to a mechanic to clean it.. it quit having the problem for almost 2 weeks, but when i got on the road to chicago, 60 miles from home the problem showed back when i stopped at a gas,i really feel is a factory defect after reading all this posts from other customers having similar problems. *tr
While driving the car completely went dead. everything turned off. had to drift to side of the road. technician told me it was a pcm problem and needs to replace, coils, plugs and pcm. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford escape. the contact stated that while driving approximately 55 mph the vehicle began to decelerate and eventually stalled without warning. the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic where they advised her that the transmission would have to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 103,000.
Was driving my car at 45 miles per hour the car began to sputter and came to very quick halt in the middle of traffic. i had the car towed to my local garage, it was hooked up to a computer diagnostic tool. the trouble codes came up p0351, p0352, p0353, p0354 which i'm being told it will cost me $ 750.00 to replace all 6 coils, $1100.00 to replace the pcm module and i will need 6 new spark plugs. these prices don't include labor or diagnostic costs either. in doing some investigation this is a known issue with ford motor company and the emission warranty only covers you for 8 years/80,000 miles. not sure what a pcm module is or what coils do. thank you ford motor company for installing faulty parts in my motor when they built it in 2005. now this is my problem and at my expense...... ford sent out a tbs regarding the wrong plugs were installed which leads to this issue. tsb 09-2-6 and tsb 10-18-10 is evidence enough they new there was clearly an issue with the factory installed spark plugs causing rfi damage to the cop's and subsequently the ecm. it appears they were betting that most vehicles would have issues outside the 80,000 mile federal warranty. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford escape. the contact stated that while driving approximately 35 mph, a rumbling noise was heard from around the console area. the contact merged to the shoulder of the road and shifted into neutral. the rumbling noise then ceased. the contact also stated that the vehicle was shifted back into drive and the rumbling noise started again. the following day while driving uphill, the noise became louder and all of the gears failed. the vehicle was towed to the contact's home and was not taken to a dealer for a diagnostic testing. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and advised the contact that the vehicle was not included in any recalls. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure and current mileage was 71,104.
I was driving to work on us 41 south when my 2005 ford escape just started to buck and would not accelerate, i was going approximately 45 mph and the car just shut off. i could not steer or start it again and was almost hit by an 18 wheel vehicle and killed. i immediately put my flashers on and kept retrying to start the car to get it off the road. this could have killed me and others this morning! this is a ford motor company mechanical issue and they knew about this problem with this model vehicle and choose to not recall it!! how many people have died from this problem that we are not aware of??? i took the car and had it checked out and they said that ford issued a bulletin on this exact issue and how to fix it! only now, its going to cost me, the consumer $2000 or more to fix!! i am so upset from it, i am almost paid off on this vehicle and i feel that this issue should be looked into by the attorney general and by the transportation department of safety! *tr
While driving 45mph the car just cut off is a high traffic area. the car behind me had to swerve to miss rear-ending me! i had my 3 year old daughter w/ me at the time! our mechanic has informed us that apparently ford motor company is aware that bad plugs were installed in these cars and would cause computer failure! nothing was told to us regarding this issue when we purchased the car! when emailed fmc they informed me that this is not a safety issue & a recall is not required. how can this not be a safety issue when the car completely dies w/out warning??? *tr
On way home, car shut off while going 35 mph. coils started to smoke. towed to nearest dealer and was told all coils, plugs and powertrain module needs to be replaced at $2500. researched legitimate websites and found many owners with same problem that had fixed more than once at $2500. was told by dealer that nhtsa only recalls for safety & emissions. this is clearly a safety issue, especially if going a high speed on interstate and car shuts off without warning. thankfully my kids were not in car. *tr
The car stopped moving at the posted speed. the catalytic converter disintegrated, and blocked the airflow. the warranty expired 4 months earlier. ford did not seem interested in either the issue or/ helping resolve it. should there be a recall? *tr
[xxx] 2005 ford escape xls, fwd had issue with throttle body. it got to the point where i would have to stop the gas pedal just to make it accelerate from a stopped state. this first happened back in november of 2011, and now i can feel it start to get to that point again... i was able to clean it last year with b-12 chemtool which took care of it right away. it was completely gunked but worked like new once i had it cleaned. guess it is time to do this again... i figured i would report this after seeing a news article on abc regarding the exact same things. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).*tr
We had a problem with the transmission from 14000 miles, we reported to dealer and they never noted it in there computer.. we complained 6 times with it only got put in the computer at the dealer twice.. finally after it ran out of warranty, it almost killed our whole family.. the trany when we came up to a stop sign coming off the freeway stayed ingaged and through us in to a bunch of traffic, almost causing a he'll of a accident.. we'll it ended up ruining the transmission cause the torque converter locked up and caused it not to disengage.. i ended up spending 3500.00 and had the dealer put a own rebuilt in. later i found out ford had 4 updated torque converters.. why was there not a recall when it almost kills people.. i am very frustrated with everything that has went on with this vehicle.. i am will to join any kind of lawsuit over getting the government to take more avasive move to help and protect the consumer, instead of helping these big companies bend people over.. we pay a lot of money for these vehicles, and we get treated like dirt..
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford escape. the contact stated that while driving 10 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. the vehicle was restarted and it resumed normal function. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection and they stated that the power train control module needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified and they stated that the vehicle was not under warranty. the failure mileage was 100,000.
9/10/12, while driving on the freeway my check engine light came on and my car started running very hard and started shaking and i could feel the car loosing power. i turned the steering wheel towards the right to pull over and as i pressed the gas pedal i could feel the car had shut off. i was able to pull off to the side of the highway and my car smell like something was burning. after sitting for about 15mins the car started and i was able to start the car and drove it at about 40 mph until getting off the exit to go home which was about 10 more miles. i had to continuously press the gas making the car accelerate between 30 to 40mph because the car started to repeat the same thing as i stated earlier. i took the car to the shop 9/13/12 (my car had 153224 miles) and was told there was misfire on #2 coil, so i paid to have the coil changed. 2/15/13 my check engine light came back on and the car was repeatedly hesitating, i took it the shop 2/19/13 (my car had 163071 miles) and had the same misfire code, so i paid to have all three rear coils changed, the owner showed me the old coils & the #2 coil look burned and burst open from the top. after changing the coils the check engine light came back on with the same misfire code for #2 coil and i paid to have it changed again 6/18/13 (my car had 171459 miles). the engine light came back on with the same code and i paid to changed it again 7/12/13 (my car had 173095 miles) after i drove the car about 50 miles the light came back on. i had the code read again on 7/30/13 (my car had 173920 miles) and it gave the same code for a misfire on coil #2. the owner of the shop advised me to take the car to the dealer and explain the problem and check if there has been a recall on the 2005 model. i called the ford dealership and was told i would have to pay for them to do another diagnostic quoted at $140. *tr
While exiting highway, all lights on dash came on, vehicle started sputtering. ford dealership hooked up to diagnostic and indicated that the pcm had "blown" and taken all six coils with it. thus, resulting in upwards to $2500 for repairs for not only a new pcm but also all six coils. of which, i had 2 replaced less than a year ago. dealership also indicated that ford was aware of the problem but it was not classified as a recall. what the heck as i read up on internet and this is indicative to a problem they are aware of and also that occurred in previous years. *tr
Was driving down the highway, and the vehicle just shut off. was able to start it, but it would not run right for the first 5 minutes. after leaving it off for a half hour, worked fine. also happened on 9/6/2012 and 9/23/2012. loss of all power steering, power brakes, and vehicle hard to control when it is shut off. asked ford dealership about what could be done, and they just want me to bring it in. now impossible to take any where because it wont even start back up. read online how this has happened to many people, and all the dealership does is take them for 6000 dollars and the problem does not get resolved. *tr
