2002 ford escape xlt - our vehicle has experienced numerous stalls on the expressway. it takes out power steering and the brakes. each time it starts back up after i can get the vehicle stopped.

Engine failed while traveling at 60 mph (in cruise control) on interstate highway. dealer diagnosed problem as seized engine. failure was sudden and without warning. *ak

Engine stalled while driving downhill. was either braking or decelerating by letting up on gas. check engine, airbag, and possibly oil lights came on. power steering and brakes failed. was able to pull off the road and stop vehicle with hand brake. shifted vehicle into park and restarted. had been driving for approx. 1/2 hour (15 miles). weather was cool and clear.

Brand new 2002 ford escape xlt automatic 4x2 stalled 5 times driving it home from the deaer after buying it. lost power steering and bower brakes at over 35 mph. dealer does not know what the solution to the problem is at all. *ak

2002 escape stalled while coasting 35-40 mph down-hill. engine, battery and oil lights illuminated on dash. loss of power steering and breaks. vehicle started up immediately after placing in "park" position. dealership tested vehicle and found nothing out of the ordinary. vehicle was 3 days old, 164 miles on odometer. this vehicle is the replacement to 2001 escape that stalled 4 times while coasting. dealer replaced fuel pump, electronic engine control (eec) relay on separate occasions. vehicle still stalled. dealership very "pro-active" and willing to assist by offering rental car while testing both vehicles.

While attempting to pass a car on the interstate, engine died. thick white smoke engulfed the back window from the exhaust. was momentarily unable to see anything in back on the car. i lost all power steering and power brakes . i was able to make it to the side of the road. the car was towed and when dealer looked at it was "locked up" the engine was replaced.*ak

Engine suddenly stopped completely, restarting it was impossible. all power was lost and flames were shooting from rear of vehicle. dealer has been contacted. *ak the consumer stated that this created an extremely dangerous situation in heavy traffic. *yh

Vehicle stalls while traveling at approx 40 mph. dealer has been unable to correct problem after 4 repair attempts. has involved manufacturers field service engineer who also has been unable to correct problem. manufacturer claims they are going to repurchase vehicle due to stalling problem.

While driving down the interstate at around 70 mph, the vehicle made a clunking noise and the engine stopped. this all happened within 30 seconds. i was able to coast over to the side of the road without incident. the problem was a seized engine and ford is replacing with a new one.*ak

On three occasions about two months apart, starting in oct 2001 my ford escape stalled while driving. it has been to the dealer the first and third time, the most recent being 2/4/02. a "fix" has been made, but whether that takes care of the problem remains to be seen. *ak

Vehicle stopped running while at speed on the road. dealer diagnosed problem as a seized engine. the 3.0 l v6 engine is going to be replaced. vehicle only had 331 miles on it. *ak

Vehicle was going 45mph and stalled without warning. consumer had only owned vehicle for 4 days. dealer couldn't find a cause, but kept it to inspect further and gave consumer a loaner vehicle.*ak

On two occasions engine stalled while driving down hill. dealer has not been able to duplicate the problem. *ak the consumer stated that when the engine stalled with no warning, the steering got sluggish and the brake pedal got stiff. *yh

Consumer states that while driving at any speed and with no warning the vehicle will stall and it will be hard for the consumer to control the vehicle. dealer notified. mr consumer was informed by the dealer that there is a silent recall on the vehicle in replacing the engine, consumer stated the first day of purcahse the vehicle started to shake and there was smoke coming from under the hood and then the engine light illuminated.*jb

Consumer comments that while going downhill, the engine would stall, the engine would turn off, and engine light would come on also causing consumer to loose power steering and brakes, dealership replaced the fuel lead. *jg
