Submission from re ford escape 2001 safety recall notice 11s24 *tgw the consumer received a recall notice in jan 2012. the notice indicated she would be informed when the parts required to complete the safety recall would become available, which wouldn't be until the second quarter. the vehicle caught on fire while parked, which was prior to the recall, but was quickly extinguished. shortly after the fire, the vehicle was repaired. several months later, the consumer was partly compensated by ford in the form of a check for $1900 accompanied by a document which stated by accepting the compensation, she would also be signing off on any other claims. the consumer also stated the catalytic converter, exhaust manifold, master cylinder, wiring harness, abs, brake line booster, power steering rack and pinion, tie rods, intake manifold as well as the air bag were all replaced. the steering column would freeze, the rear passenger door handle fell off, rendering the door unstable, the coolant light illuminated, the oil pan needed to be replaced, the air condition stopped working and the rear shock were leaking. *jb

Mar 27 had 2001 ford escape in dealership for oil leak and engine hesitation. leak not fixed on 1st time taken to dealer. #3 coil, intake gaskets replaced & tuneup done for hesitation. mar 31 vehicle taken back for same problems, #4 coil was replaced and was told no oil leak, also told engine not supposed to be washed and water blew out #4 coil. on the way home, still smelled burning oil & engine hesitation still felt. called dealership, was told to let the car sit for a day. car sat for 2 days. car still drove the same, oil leak & hesitation still there. took vehicle straight back to the dealership, on the way there vehicle had no power and would not go faster than 15mph. then the egr valve blew. and i live 2 miles from the dealership. dealership had the vehicle from apr 1 to apr 15. now i was told the catalytic converters on the manifolds are plugged up and this is causing the hesitation and the oil leak was from the timing chain cover. dealership had to remove the engine to replace the gasket. was told they don't know how they missed this leak the other 2 times i took the vehicle in for this leak. only thing the warranty covered is the oil leak. federal mandated emission law is 8yrs or 80,000 miles. vehicle is in the 8 years and @ 75,500 miles. ford refuses to do anything about the converters. took escape to local mechanic apr 17. exhaust inspection showed only the rear catalytic converter plugged (replaced now). #4 & #6 coils not firing. coils work connected in other sparkplug locations. wiring for coils not working. these coil locations worked prior to going back to dealership. mechanic said i should sue the dealership for misdiagnosis and breaking additional items when engine was removed. mechanic also ran diagnostic, no codes coming up, dealership reset pcm to old programming, so vehicle now hesitates & dies. wife still wants to keep vehicle. told her no. already shopping for anything other than ford. *tr

I have a complaint. i own a ford escape 2001. first the drivers rear door will not open from the outside or inside. now the driver's door won't open from the outside to get in, but i can open it from the inside to get out. is there a recall on theses doors? *tr

Ford escape 2001 master brake cylinder and brakes failed causing accident when i totally lost my brakes. 1 day after ford dealership replaced master brake cylinder. ford has faulty master brake parts. *tr

The display on my ford escape radio has stopped functioning correctly; the radio itself is functioning. after calling several repair shops, the dealer service center, and searching the internet it is very apparent this is a common occurrence in several of the oem radios and the result of a design flaw. multiple websites and discussion pages refer to this issue as being the result of an overheat condition on the display board due to proximity of the power supply and improper heat dissipation. *nm

While driving, the vehicle stalled. the consumer restarted the vehicle and pulled over. the consumer drove the vehicle to the auto service for inspection and the mechanic informed the consumer that the problem could not be duplicated. *ak there was grinding and a round metal object snapped and broke off of the ac compressor. there were also problem with the air bag and the steering. *sc *jb

The tire jack was only used 1 time to change a flat on the right rear of the vehicle, when i used it to jack up the vehicle the scissor jack cracked at the threads where the tube holds the screw mechanism. the material used to make the tire jacks is defective and can cause the jack to fail and fall on a person changing the tire. i went to the dealer and they said it is no longer under warranty and i would have to buy another. it costs $55.00. this is unfair since the jack was only used 1 time and it was used in accordance to the instructions on the tire well cover. the material is cheap "pot metal" and will not withstand the weight of the escape during jacking up the vehicle, before the tube that holds the screw mechanism cracks, thus causing the screw to strip out and the jack to collapse under the weight of the vehicle. *jb

Auto stalled while going 30 mph on a slight incline. auto lost all power steering and electrical. it was lucky that no one was around (early morning). we had to coast to side, and because we didn't have power steering i hit the curb pretty hard. on the way home it did the same thing at about 40 mph. will take this to markel ford in omaha, ne for fix. we have 44,000 miles, and if ford cannot get this fixed it will be time to sell. this will be my first and last ford, if i have to pay for this fix. now i know why my father told me to buy a toyota. *la

While traveling to work today, my 2001 ford escape stalled four times while driving. each time, i was going between 20-35 mph and the car just completely shut off. this is extremely dangerous as i have a young son who was riding with me at the time. the dealer stated they have had numerous cars do this. *la

While driving only at low speeds, steering column will make a loud noise and it could cause future steering problems. dealer notified.*ak the cover on the bottom of the steering wheel was broken. the vehicle shimmys when applying the brakes. the brakes were inspected and the front rotor was machined and the front pads cleaned. consumer states there is a pecking noise in the engine. consumer states the accelerator pedal is hard to push because the throttle body needed replacing. the air conditioner stops while at idle. also, when coming to a stop, the heater is not warm. *jg

While driving at about 40 mph, with both children in the car, my car stalled in a busy intersection. my brakes, steering, accellerator, and electrical(radio and speedometer) went out. i was forced to coast down the street to find somewhere to pull over. i have sent it to the dealership and they acted like it was my fault that it happened and that they hadn't heard of such complaint. i am scared to drive it even after they said it is fixed. i have heard of this happening, after i did some reasearch and people have reported it happening again. i would like some kind of trade or reimbuirsement. my reason being is for the saftey of my children and myself. the car is only 11 months old.*ak

Vehicle has stalled 3 times at 35-40 mph down an incline. dealer has recalibrated computer.*ak dealer put on new eec and new idle air control. a/c failed and was replaced. *yh

Foul odor coming from airconditioning vents. took it to the shop the first time, and they stated that there was a moisture build up in the airconditioning vents and all they could do was disenfect the airconditioning vents with a spray. i took it back a second time and they stated they could not find the problem.*ak

Briefly, the transmission fails to shift upon acceleration above 50 mph, this has caused 2 near collisions on i-95, tire split open & roof rack blew off while driving*ak (dot number: a3083jj390 tiresize: a3083jj390)

Was traveling 40mph on highway went to change lanes and power steering didn't respond. dealership was aware of problem.*ak check engine light illuminated and oil light illuminated, dealer cleaned ground connections under the battery. sub woofer inoperable, dealer replaced. *slc

Tires make a humming noise. consumer feels that they may be leaving ground like hydroplaning, and at 65 mph vehicle wobbles, vehicle is not stable at high speeds with window down. *ak the vehicle hesitates when a/c unit is in operation and a/c make a loud cyclic clicking sound. transmission makes sound. the vehicle was unstable at 65 mph with a slight wind and front end makes tumbling sounds on rough roads. the alternator light comes on intermittently. the cruise control turns off automaticaly by itself. the front brake has excessive dust. the vehicle had numerous interior system failures and malfunctioning. *yh

The air conditioner from the very beginning has a very foul smell of mildew and mold. if you use the ac for an extended period of time the smell is worst then ever. both my son and i are allergic to mold and mildew and when i turn on the ac, we both begin to sneeze, cough, runny nose and eyes. i cannot not use the ac. i have brought the truck back 3 times for a total of 12 days and now have it in the shop again. there is also a constant rattle on the drivers door side and the rear tailgate door/window. these problems were reported on the first visit also. each time i was told the problem has been taken care of, i drive off and the problems are still very evident. the third time as i was pulling out of there driveway after having just been told the problems were solved. these have been an ongoing problems. my concern is i have been back four times in less the 5 months for problems, what happens when the truck is a year old!!!!!!*ak
