We have classified the 205 complaints from 2006 Dodge Ram 2500 about STEERING into the following categories.
The vehicle was hard to steer for about 6 months before having it repaired at my local dealership on oct 14, 2013. it would pull one direction or the other and it would shake and be uncontrollable. the dealer ship replaced the original parts with mopar steering linkage updated kit. this cost me $831.95 parts and labor, plus $15.00 shop materials charge. now that i have received a recall notice np62 / nhtsa 13v-528 from chrysler in january 2014 stating that if i have had it replaced prior to the recall notice to send the original receipts and or other adequate proof of payment to the following address for reimbursement : chrysler customer assistance, p.o.box 21-8007, auburn hills, mi 48321-8007 attention: reimbursement. once they receive and verify the required documents, reimbursement will be sent to you within 60 days. i did this and now they are saying they will not reimburse my money for the parts and labor. this vehicle has never been used for anything except a highway truck and has never been off road. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 dodge ram 2500 diesel. the contact stated that while reversing into a driveway, an unusual snap was heard. the contact stated that the power steering failed within minutes. the vehicle was towed to the dealer for inspection. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired but was previously remedied under nhtsa campaign number: 11v350000 (steering). the approximate failure mileage was 130,000. the vin was unavailable.
After being inspected at dealership for prior tie rod and steering link recalls, my ram 2500 at about the 125k mileage point began to experience the now well documented "dodge death rattlle", where at highway speeds the front end would violently shimmy. soon thereafter my tie rod did fracture, causing me to lose steering ability on a 40mph roadway, where i narrowly avoided a serious accident. i had it repaired at my local shop and it went another 10k before the dodge death rattle reappeared again, and despite numerous checks on alignment, shocks, front end, there did not seem to be an answer. there always remained a shimmy on bumps on the highway, and i only drove this truck on local roads thereafter. tonight backing out of my driveway, the steering link assembly just fractured and i again lost steering ability completely. this same recall was followed by another recall by dodge on this component (h46 was first, then n62) it is my belief this defective componentry causing the "death rattle" also put so much stress on the rest of the front end that this vehicle is unsafe to drive. as i explore on the internet it is quite obvious that dodge was aware of this problem, and did nothing about it for my vehicle. i almost died the first time, thankfully the second time i was not even on the road yet ! i spoke with dodge tonight and was told that i could bring it to a dealer to inspect and "if it is indeed due to any of the recalled items" they would gladly repair it for me and provide me a quote. what recourse do i as an owner have ? the later recalled models all have this same problem, yet my car is not on their list, do i have to take their word for it that it is not their fault ? am i entitled to compensation for the repairs i have already done at my expense ? this vehicle is not safe and i do not want to drive it again.

I severe steering wobble at highway speed after hitting a bump/ pothole in the roadway. s wobble stopped upon slowing. while driving can feel something bumping in the steering wheel anytime you hit a bump while on slight turn. i contacted several dealers in the ohio west virginia area i explained my difficulty they stated they only get parts to repair 1 vehicle per week. they stated there is a list over a hundred people and they could not help me even though they stated having possession of parts to perform 6 recalls either n 62 or h47. elm grove dodge in elm grove wv and bob caldwell chrysler plymouth in columbus ohio also stated having parts to do 4 recalls they also stated having a long list and only receiving 1 recall part per week. the dealer in ri paul bailey dodge in north kingstown gave me this same story months ago said they would put me on the list as we'll. they never called. i contacted daimler chrysler 7/2/14 advised of them of my situation and i'm awaiting a follow up phone call 7/3/14 to advise me if they have found a dealer to assist me. i offered to drive 3 hours to caldwell chrysler in columbus ohio. also i offered to leave the truck for a week or 2 for them to complete the repairs. this is a very serious condition. ps i offered to buy the part they stated the new customer pay part requires the purchase of 3 additional steering linkage parts as the steering linkage has been upgraded and the new parts are not compatible with the oem parts installed new at the factory. however the tie bar associated with the recall is designed to be compatible with the oem steering linkage thus making it not necessary to replace 3 other steering parts daimler would not have to pay for. please advise asap. *tr
I was on i-35 in mo just north of cameron heading toward winston. about half way between winston and cameron i hit a bump in the road. the road is some what rough due to truck traffic. when i hit the bump the front of the truck became loose violently shaking and causing complete loss of control of the vehicle. it felt as if i were running over a series of speed bumps. i began to slow down immediately. as i was slowing down the truck still shaking vigorously i reclaimed control of the vehicle easing it to the shoulder and stopping. once stopped i began on the road again and seemed to be fine. *tr
For the last two or three months my 2006 dodge ram 2500 has started having the death wobble!! the uncontrollable tire wobble happens at least twice a day now. i have tried just about everything to fix it. i have purchased new bushings and the steering gear stabilizer. i will not buy another dodge because of this. when talking to dodge about my problem, it felt like they were just blowing me off. *tr
I was coming back from lunch cross a highway bridge on one side of the bridge had a rough spot when the truck hit it the truck started going from side to side could barely get it stop before headed off the road. what it was the right tie rod end came apart causing the tie rod to fall to the ground losing control of the steering could have been a bad crash for me.i did get a recall notice for the left side tie rod end but the right side i think both sides need to in the notice.it was a near miss for me! *tr

While driving down the highway at 70 mph i hit a rough spot in the road and truck began to shake violently. i had no control until i slowed down to under 50 mph. there was heavy traffic as it was rush hour and i almost caused a serious accident. after researching the internet i have found this to be a common problem in dodge trucks and jeeps. there are many youtube videos, it has been on national news and there are many complaints on nhtsa.dot.gov also. is it going to take someone getting killed to get this defect recalled? the dealerships refuse to acknowledge this defect and use it as an excuse to replace every component in your front end and charge you thousands of dollars. please address this before someone gets killed. *tr
When hitting a small bump with the right tire the whole front end began to shake uncontrolably with difficulty steering. had to bring the truck to a complete stop on the side of the highway. there was a semi right behind me that had to swerve to miss hitting me while i tried to control the vechile. dodge has said there is a death wobble and are aware of it, but no recall at this time. also dodge told me that it was a manufacure defeact and i could pay to have it fix. have already spent 1800.00 dollars replacing ball joint, tirieds, bearings. etc and still has the death wobble and unable to drive or sell due to the danger of accident. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 dodge ram 2500. the contact stated that while driving various speeds, the front driver's side tie rod fractured. the vehicle was towed to the contact's home. the vehicle was repaired by the contact. the contact received a recall notification under nhtsa campaign number: 13v528000 (steering) after he repaired the vehicle. the manufacturer was made aware of the problem. the approximate failure mileage was 120,000.
While traveling at speed (50-55 mph), the highway gradually went to the left. during this left maneuver, the steering wheel and front end of vehicle began to shake violently. the only way to stop the shaking was to slow under 20 mph. i had owned this vehicle for less than a week when this issue first occurred. it has since happened every time i've driven the truck. it always seems while turning the steering wheel to the right or left and when traveling over bumps or joints in the road surface. this violent shaking would have definitely caused loss of control if speed wasn't reduced immediately. this has been a frightening experience, and i have scheduled an appointment at a steering specialty shop immediately. i have been trying to keep the truck under 50 mph (when feasible) and i avoid interstates altogether. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 dodge ram 2500. the contact received a recall notice for nhtsa campaign number: 13v528000 (steering). the contact waited for nine months , but the dealer continued to state that the part was not available to repair the vehicle. the manufacturer was notified. the contact had not experienced a failure.
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 dodge ram 2500. the contact stated that while driving approximately 15 mph, the driver's side tire rod ball stud failed and caused the vehicle to veer off the roadway. the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic, who replaced the driver's side tie rod end. the contact later received notification of nhtsa campaign id number 13v528000(steering) however, the manufacturer indicated that vehicle was not included in the recall. the approximate failure mileage was 80,000.
I was traveling highway i-95 near jax , fl. while crossing an overpass expansion joint between bridge and pavement the front end of my truck began violently shaking - so bad i could barely keep control. i slowed as fast as possible and headed for the median out of the way from traffic following. truck completed an entire "donut " in median causing all traffic to stop. i immediately thought a blown tire. i had previously replaced tires, shocks and fresh alignment less than 500 miles prior to incident. i called dodge care and they said there was a recall on steering linkage. i took truck to gator dodge in melbourne florida for the recall. service manager mike said the truck didn't apply to recall. he blamed the violent "death wobble" on my brand new tires and non mopar shocks. shocks are aftermarket direct fit for my truck from monroe. he also said that i needed an alignment and tires rebalanced. i did what he asked and brought truck back to gator dodge for a new diagnosis. he then blamed the violent shaking on " glazed rotors". oddly the problem does not happen when braking. he then talked with his service manager and replaced the pittman arm, stabilizer shock and some kind of control arm with new adjustment clamps for free. did nothing to correct the problem. the truck still makes "clunking noises " from somewhere behind firewall when just crossing over the white stop lines on the road or even my garden hose in the driveway. death wobble can be duplicated at high speeds but he refused to drive to highway to show him the problem. i am going to install a new steering gearbox and aftermarket stabilizer tomorrow and see what happens. i have a feeling it will be wasted money. i believe the truck needs recalled before i kill someone on the road. i cant afford a new truck and will not let my kids ride in this one. *tr

Was driving 45-50 mph when truck hit a rough spot in road and began violently shaking and was almost impossible to control. had to slow down in order for shaking to stop. steering was almost impossible while this was happening.\very scary! has happened several time since. my 19 year old daughter drives this truck! (maybe not for long). *tr
Vehicle was parked. as i started to back out of a parking spot, i began to turn the steering wheel counterclockwise. the sector shaft on the steering box sheared in half and the pitman arm and drag link fell to the ground. lost complete steering control. let it be noted that this truck is not driven off-road in 4x4 environments. truck has a 4 inch lift and 35 inch tires. wheels are of a factory size. chrysler was asked for assistance in this repair, because of the type of failure and the fact that the vehicle was not within the factory warranty period. the claim was considered but denied because of the oversize tires. no consideration was given. pictures are available. *tr
I have been watching the news recently and saw the jeep death wobble reports. i have the same experience and same problem with my 2006 dodge ram 2500. i almost got into two accidents on the high way and once my truck lost control due to the death wobble and turned 180 degrees on the highway facing oncoming traffic. but, luckily no one was hurt. i took the truck to see what the problem was and the mechanics said i have to pay a couple thousand to repair. however, the mechanic said he has seen many jeep and dodge have the same problem and said the company should have a recall because it is extremely dangerous and it is the manufactures fault. due to hard economic times i can not afford to fix my truck and i am very scared for my safety and my families. so please help me in this terrible situation along with other dodge ram and jeep owners. this is very common problem and can be seen all over the internet, youtube and the news. i look forward to hearing back from you and getting help. *tr
While traveling down roadway approx 45 mph, vehicle began to wobble really bad in front, felt steering was really loose or nonexistent. pulled over and found nothing wrong, vehicle drove fine afterwards. several days later, while driving approx 65mph on interstate, heard and felt a "pop" in the front as if i had hit something - looking back i did not see anything. if you ever hit a bird on the interstate, this is what it felt like; however there was no indications that i had hit anything, shortly after i began to experience the wobble again - immediately pulled over thinking my tire may have blown - there was no indication of anything. today, i took my truck in the shop for the recall (l16) left tie rod; i was told it was ok after inspection and there was no problem; however, for $1383 they tell me they will replace and fix my steering gear box because it is leaking. on the 13th of april after experiencing the wobble, i crawled underneath my truck and found no such evidence of anything; after leaving the dealer and crawling under truck, i noticed where there is leakage at the steering gear box now. after searching net for replacement parts i began to see all issues with these related parts. dodge should really look at this entire system as they could be tied together. i will repair the vehicle but i am really shocked that dodge has not done anything about these complaints with this wobble even after repairs. i don't want to spend that much money if wobble continues after repair. current mileage on vehicle is 96103 - i have owned this truck since new. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 dodge ram 2500. whenever the contact turned the steering wheel during the first 10 minutes of operation, he noticed that the steering wheel hesitated to return to the proper position. the vehicle was taken to the dealer, where the contact was informed that the front bearings and u joints needed to be replaced. the vehicle had not been repaired. the current and failure mileages were 60,000.
After hitting a bump at highway speed the front end of my truck violently shook until i reduced speed to around 50mph. after researching issue on line i found this issue is so common that it is now referred to as the "dodge death wobble". when this happened to me i was unable to steer until i slowed enough to stop the violent shaking. i contacted the local dodge dealer to see if there were any recalls for this and they told me that this was the first time that they had heard of this issue. i had the dealership look at my truck several months before and they found nothing. i had les schwab look it over and they found nothing. several on line posts indicated similar results. to get a better idea of the extent of the issue just go to you tube and type in "dodge death wobble" and you will see plenty of videos with the exact issue i experienced. *tr
2006 dodge ram 2500. consumer writes in regards to safety recall notice concerning the left outer tie rod *tgw the repairs were made on the vehicle, prior to receiving the recall.
I received recall notice n62/nhtsa 13v-528 regarding the steering linkage. i had a failure of the linkage in 2011 and it was repaired, but with the same defective parts. when i went to the dealer to have him check to see if the vehicle was included in the recall, after inspection he stated "yes". i was put on a long list and was told it might be june before the repair is completed due to unavailability of parts from chrysler. this is unacceptable to continue to operate the vehicle for this long with the potential that the defect could cause a loss of directional control and/or crash without warning." (quote directly from the recall notice). chrysler needs to provide parts, and the dealers need to address this recall on a much more timely basis. *tr
The tie rod assembly broke while driving at approximately 25 mph. i filed a complaint with your department in 2013, complaint #10507531, because chrysler stated that our manufacture date was not included in the 2006 recall. the recall has since been expanded to include my manufacture date. now they are telling me that it is not covered because the recall is for mopar tie rods only, and that i would have to have it fail 2 times for it to be covered under recall. i am the 2nd owner of the truck and cannot verify how many times the tie rods may or may not have failed prior to my purchase. also, since the repair was done prior to notification or knowledge of the recall, the failed part was not kept to see the manufacturer. all i do know is that the tie rod did fail and the steering went completely out on the truck while driving. this is a diesel model truck that is good for 250,000 to 350,000 miles. this should not have happened. chrysler is denying my claim under the recall and told me to have a nice day. i am not satisfied and do not feel this is justifiable. if their intent is to blame the numerous tie rod failures on a particular brand of part, it does not explain why my tie rod failed if it had their part. i ask for your assistance. the failure should be included under the recall. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 dodge ram 2500. the contact stated that while driving approximately 20 mph, the power steering failed without warning. the vehicle was towed to a private mechanic where it was diagnosed that the tie rods needed to be replaced. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated that the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 11v350000 (steering). the vehicle was repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 110,000 and the current mileage was unknown. *tr updated 6/17/13 *cn
I have called and visited my local chrysler/dodge dealer (liberty dodge chrysler jeep ram- pataskala, ohio) in ohio to try and get my truck fixed due to the recall. i have heard excuses from- we do not have any parts yet, we will call you in 3-4 weeks when we have parts (no call back), our service supervisor is not in right now, you will have to come back (went back a day later, they are in meetings all day, you will have to speak with them about the recall), called again and they said we still do not have parts we will call you back (no call back, keep in mind this was 6 weeks after the original call date), this past week i called again and they said let me check with our parts department and we will give you a call back this afternoon(no call back). they have had plenty of oppurtunities to atleast be curtious and give me a call back to update, let alone fix the recall. i have even told them my front tires have extreme abnormal wear on the insides, and they're response was, we will have our service manager call you back(no call back). i am very upset about this as we have a 6 week old baby and we will not use the truck to transport her anywhere due to the safety concern, so we have to jump through hoops to take her to appointments, etc. i would lilke my truck fixed as soon as possible. thank you *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 dodge ram 2500. the contact was driving 5 mph when the ball stud on the driver side tie rod fractured and cut the wheel, causing instability in the steering. the vehicle was taken to a local mechanic who informed the contact that the tie rod failed and needed to be replaced. the dealer was notified of the failure who stated that the vin was not included in the recall under nhtsa campaign id number: 11v350000 (steering: linkages: tie rod assembly). the manufacturer was notified who offered no assistance. the failure mileage was 160,000.
The truck shakes uncontrollably after hitting a pot hole or un even pavement. aprox 55 to 75 mph. i almost went off an embankment at 65 mph. the truck would non steer or brake when it was shaking. death wobble look at you tube dodge truck death wobble. *tr
As wife was backing into driveway with steering wheel cranked to the left, the outer left tie rod end failed, and sheered off at the pin then lodged between the caliper and wheel breaking the wheel and bending the backing plate. this problem matches exactly an existing recall for newer model dodge trucks (nhtsa id # 11v350000, action # pe11009). it is scary to think if this had happened at speed, reading that some people have rolled off of the road into ditches and even a river. my vehicle previously was issued a recall for steering and parts were replaced with these defective parts. *tr
At 70 mph road speed, when encountering a pot hole or bridge expansion joint, the front wheels and steering components begin to shake and wobble violently, nearly jerking the steering wheel out of my hands. had i not had both hands on the wheel at the time, a loss of vehicle control might have occurred. while braking and trying to maintain control of the vehicle, at approximately 25 mph the violent shaking suddenly stopped. within 2 miles after resuming a 70 mph speed the same thing happened when crossing the next bridge expansion joint. again, when slowing to 25 mph, the shaking stopped. i have since checked several sources and found this appears to be a common problem on ram 2500 diesel powered trucks. several after market companies are selling products which they claim will prevent this so called "death wobble" after checking with a local dodge heavy duty truck dealer they claim they are not aware of such a problem ever occurring. i believe that dodge is aware of this problem, but since no one has been killed or injured yet, they are reluctant to delve into the problem for a solution, or acknowledge that it even exists. *tr
I was turning my dodge ram in a parking lot when the steering failed. the tie rod end separated and failed causing the steering to fail. if i would have been traveling at a higher rate of speed i could have been killed. i had absolutely no control of the trucks steering. dodge would not correct the problem with out charging me for the repair and didn't seem to care that people could be getting killed from the defective parts in their trucks. i called two dealers and the chrysler care line but only got the run around. i would also like to make note that there are many of these failures occurring when i did a google search i found many complaints on message boards of dodge truck steering failures. i'm sure some people have not lived through this failure to launch a complaint about it. i would like to note that i repaired the truck myself with a replacement part from napa. the part cost $103.00. if i would have taken it to the dealer i would have had to pay over $650.00 for the parts because dodge has changed the replacement steering linkage for my truck. i would have had to replace the entire linkage to the 2008.5 linkage. i am sure they did this because they recognized they had a problem. after doing some research on the internet it appears that the 2008.5 linkage may have a higher failure rate than the 2006 linkage i have on my truck. because of that i choose to keep my original style linkage and just replace the tie rod end. this is a very serious problem that dodge needs to take responsibility for correcting! *tr

After hitting a bump in the road going 70 mph my truck began to shake so violently it ripped the steering wheel from my hand and uncontrollably changed several lanes on i-95 before coming to a stop. i have since had it happen 3 more times at lower speeds around 55-65 mph. i have contacted dodge with no help, i have read many accounts of others with the same problem dubbed the "death wobble". i have so far changed tires, shocks, steering dampener, and tie rods. it still has the problem and is extremely dangerous i will not let anyone ride in it, this will absolutely get someone killed eventually. do not buy a dodge ram 2500. *tr

I have an 06 dodge ram 2500 megacab 4x4 with 55k miles. the night prior to the incident i parked my truck after my commute home on the interstate. the next morning i was departing my residence to pick up commuters and drive to work on the interstate when my d/s tie rod broke as i turned out of the driveway. my rim and brake splash guard wre damaged from the tie rod striking it. dodge stated there was a tsb correcting steering issues with the vehicle and i could not purchase just the tie rod and i had to purchase the entire steering assembly for over $700 not including labor. it was also recomended the ball joints to be replaced for over $3000. the work has not been completed yet. i will most likely find "quality" aftermarket parts and do the work myself. *tt
