October 28, 2003 dodge customer assistance center p.o. box 21-8004 auburn hills, mi 48321-8004 dear mr. or ms.: i would like to acquaint your staff with the problem my 2000 dodge ram 2500 series with 4wd experienced last month at 128,000 miles. the vehicles vin is:[xxx]. the problem concerns an early steering box failure which meant loss of the power steering assist disappeared. there was no damage to vehicle or person and since i was on a quiet rural highway it was a matter of routine to bring the truck to a stop and figure out what had happened. your dodge dealer in vancouver, wa declined to help so the truck went to my tire and suspension dealer of long standing in camas, wa and they replaced the steering box, the track bar and the tie rod ends. im not concerned about the tie rod parts as those are wear items. i do believe that dodge should help with my expense of the gear box and track bar replacement especially since i purchased the extended warranty when the vehicle was new even though it has run out. obviously gear box failure should not occur at such a low mileage. *cb *js information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6)

The steering on my 2000 dodge ram 2500 4x4 has been sloppy/wanders for about the past two years. first, i replaced all four tires with the same standard tires. i then had it aligned and the mechanic couldn't get the steering wheel straight. so i took it to the dealer, and they recommended an independent alignment shop. there the mechanic replaced the track bar and got the steering wheel straight. that seemed to tighten up the steering wheel a bit. several months later the wheel was sloppy again. i took it back to the dealer, and they got in and test drove it with me. they did acknowledge that the wheel was "loose" but the dodges just had loose steering. they also said they could tighten up the steering gear box. so i let them do that. but when i went to pick up the truck, the service manager told me that i might have to replace the gear box soon. before i did that i wanted to see if anyone else had this problem, and they did. many people on the turbo diesel register web site have this same problem. this is how i was referred to this web site. if so many people have problems with the steering, why isn't a recall issued to correct the problem. *jb

I purchased a used 2000 dodge ram 2500 4x4 a few weeks ago. since taking ownership it has become extremely clear to me that the steering quality of the vehicle is extremely poor. the truck wanders all over the road and requires an excessive amount of corrections. i have had new tires put on and an alignment done. the problem still exists. i have let others test drive the vehicle and they all ask what is wrong with the steering.

I have had all kind of problems with the steering on this truck. it started at 6941 miles to much play in steering. a dodge dealer in cricleville, ohio replaced the tie rod-drag link. it didn't help. i went back to the dealer at 16000 and asked him to drive the truck. we went down a stright road and i told him to watch his hands on the steering wheel. he was moving the wheel all the time to keep the truck between the line on the road. he said it was normal with the dodge ram. i was mad when i left the dealer because i no better. at the time i worked for a semi truck manfacture, kenworth in chilliothe, ohio. when we would take these semis for test drives the steering was excellent. no play at all.at 22986miles i drove the truck to another dealer in columbus, ohio. same problem but they inspected and replaced the steering column. no help. at 26046 miles took the to same dealer same problem replaced the steering column coupler and intermediate shaft. also had a tran leak . replaced transfer case output seal. no help. same dealer at 29875 miles same problem but they adjusted pitman arm? and replaced rear axle housing seal. no help. at 33696 miles same problem but now i'm loosing power steering sitting still and another trans leak. same dealer replaced output shaft seal, replaced steering coupler, adj pitman arm. no help at all!!!!!!!!!!! i got the guy who work on the truck and told him to look at the play on the steering wheel just sitting there. he said he called the tech line for dodge and told me there is nothing they can do about it. i called dodge that day told them what was goin on and they said they would keep it in there computers. unbelievable!!!!! i called a dealer in mt. steering ohio. did not want anything to do with the truck. however i talked the service manger into putting a new power steering pump on my truck. he ordered a pump for a 2000 dodge 2500 but when they went to put it on the shaft was different on that pump . i have a 2001 pump on a 2000 truck.*
