Recently reported SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC problems on 1999 Dodge Ram 2500

1999 dodge 2500 pick-up safety issue. the steel brake lines are rusting out, am replacing with stainless steel as should have been done at the factory. the stock brake line blew out behind the fuel tank, got lucky went off the road and rolled to a stop in the woods before hitting a tree. *tr

Rear brake line on my 99 dodge truck failed behind the tank on the frame rail due to rust. i had an emergency stop and the pedal went all the way to the floor. after inspection the rusted hard line had a pinhole in it from the added pressure of the emergency stop. i was able to avoid the collision but if i would have had a trailer it would have been a different story. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 1999 dodge ram 2500. while driving approximately 30 mph in rainy weather conditions, the vehicle began to slide and the front wheels locked when the brake pedal was depressed. the failure occurred without warning; however, the warning indicators illuminated on the instrument panel. numerous gauges would not work while the vehicle was in operation. the failure occurred intermittently. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer for inspection and they stated that the vehicle was operating properly. on a separate occasion, the vehicle was taken to another authorized dealer for a second opinion. the technician stated that the braking issue was a manufacturer defect, but there was no resolution. the vin was not accepted by the system. the failure mileage was 79,000 and current mileage was 81,000. updated 05/05/09. *lj

1999 dodge 2500 4x4 diesel brake line corrosion led to two failures resulting in no accidents. the brake line material used has no anti corrosion properties and corrodes in the midwest salt belt from purchase. the diesel lines adjacent to the brake lines are not corroded since they are made of a material which has corrosion resistant properties. all brake lines must be replaced. this is an extremely dangerous issue especially in towing or emergency braking situations. professional opinion would be that the brake lines have only a 3-4 year safe lifetime. *tr

My 1999 dodge ram 2500 has 47000 miles on it. while going down a hill a brake line burst. i was able to get it stopped without damage. had it towed to the garage and it appears that most all of the brake lines from the vacuum booster to the rear are very rusty and ready to burst too. researching this i find this to be common with dodge ram pickups. this should not happen with such low mileage.

Tl*the contact owns a 1999 dodge ram 2500. while decelerating to approximately 10 mph, the contact depressed the brake pedal and it extended to the floor. the brake failure led her to cause a three vehicle crash. the contact was injured and a police report was filed. she noticed that brake fluid was leaking after the crash occurred. the vehicle was towed to a repair shop and they stated that the brake lines failed. the vin, engine size, and number of cylinders were unknown. the vehicle currently remains at the shop. the current and failure mileages were 80,000.

Tl*the contact owns a 1999 dodge ram 2500. the current and failure mileage were 35000. while driving 25mph, the contact engaged the brakes and crashed into another vehicle. there were no injuries. the contact was able to drive the vehicle; however, it hasn't been driven since the crash. the police were not notified of the crash. there was also minor damage to the vehicle. the dealer has not diagnosed the failure. the contact received reference # 16187860 from the manufacturer.

Tl* - the contact owns a 1999 dodge ram 2500. the contact stated that he first had the brakes replaced at 36,000 miles. periodically when applying the brakes the front wheels locked, and felt a very hard pulsating in the brake pedal. the contact stated that at 42,000 miles he replaced all four tires at the dealers prodding that the problem was with the tires. at 44,000 miles he replaced the electronic module after being told that this was the problem. the contact stated that after taking the car in approximately 5 times the same problem with the brakes recurred and never did work properly. the contact stated that weather was not a factor, and that he was driving at 30 mph the times that he experienced problems with the brakes. *ak the consumer stated the vehicle pulled to the left, there was a buzzing sound coming from the radio, the lower intake gasket was replaced. the ac blew warm air. updated 04/05/07. *jb

Dt*: the contact stated while driving various speeds, the abs warning light illuminated and the fuel gauge did not register the content level of the fuel tank. although the vehicle was not inspected, the manufacturer was alerted.

Dt*: the contact stated the am/fm radio volume control would not work. also, when raining hard, there was a leak inside the truck that stemmed from the roof of the vehicle. third, the undercarriage was rusted. fourth, the hydraulic brakes were fractured. the contact heard a leak noise and when the brake pedal was depressed, it went to the floor. the vehicle was parked in an idle position and there were no prior warnings. the vehicle was towed to the service dealer, who determined the brake line was rusted, fractured and needed to be replaced.

The hard brake line on my truck rusted through just behind the fuel tank causing loss of braking while driving. this appears to be a serious problem on most or all 1996 and newer dodge trucks. after searching the web i found thousands of other dodge truck owners with the identical problem. is there a recall to notify owners and correct this serious problem? my truck has no other rust and has been garage kept since new. the entire brake line from the master cylinder to the rear of the vehicle needs to be replaced and the system bleed. *nm

The steering in this vehicle is terrible when braking, the dashboard is craked and broken very bad in several places dodge wants to do nothing about these problems.when i apply the brakes the vehicle pulls very hard, this is not an allignment i have had that done changed the rotors the whole 9 yards still the same problem.the dash started out as a little crack now it is broken in several places.this is ridiculous.i will never purchase another dodge they dont stand behind there vehicles. *tt

From the first 6000 miles-3 intake manifold gaskets, new tires, blow out & damaged truck, brakes ,calipers and rotors bad, transmission not right, steering not right two rear axle seals blown, new engine at 63,000. it is now blown (we believe, the computer system & torque converter should have been replaced for the start). we have all our paperwork dealership does not!!!!!!!! warranty company does. we maintained this truck extremely well!!!!! we bought a total piece of junk. *nm

Dt*: the contact stated while working on the brake lines, pressure was put on the shifter plate causing the shifter bolts to fracture and the shifter plate to fall off. the contact had the plate redrilled and the bolts replaced. the dealer was alerted. *ak the consumer stated the problem began when the brake lines were replaced.

Dt*: the contact stated during sudden braking at various speeds, the vehicle pulls to the right. the dealership has made multiple repairs, but the problem persists. the tie rods, brakes, and calipers have been replaced. the wheels have also been aligned.

April 3,2001 service performed on brakes, replaced front pads, resurface rotors and repack bearing if necessary.service rear brake shoes and adjusters and alignment. returned on may 3,2001 brakes pulling hard to right. dealer serviced, machine rotors on truck deglazed pads.new tires and aligment on march 16,2003. jan.31,2004 replaced front pads, calipers and rotor. nov.17,2004 rotate tires.dec.22,2004 replaced front pads and wheel cylinders. other service done on rotation of tires and aligment, but can not locate bill. truck alway did and still pulls hard to the right when braking.

While driving 45 mph and attempting to stop suddenly the brake line exploded. as a result, vehicle swerved to avoid hitting other vehicles. dealer stated that the brake line rusted. *ak *bf *nm

The vehicle hesitated when changing gears. the consumer notice fluid on the ground of the parking lot. the dealership indicated that this occurred because the transmission cooler lines were defective and fluid leaked out. the manufacturer and the dealership were aware of this issue, and were installing an updated line and spring to correct the failure. *ak the abs lights and the brake light were on and was diagnosed as rear wheel speed sensor failure. *sc

While driving 10 mph brake pedal proceeded to the floor. as a result, rear brake line broke. no impact reported. *ak

No crash involved...yet. vehicle drifts to the right all the time & suddenly pulls hard right at random times. antilock brakes have never worked. have contacted 3 dealers about the problem & not one will admit there is a problem, yet i can find hundreds of people in internet chat rooms that have the same problem.*ak

There is no reason why i should be having a problem(e.g. accident or abuse). my right rear wheel is getting a slight amount of oil or grease on the brakes, not enough to run down the tire but enough to get tacky on the brakes. as a rusult, the brakes grab real hard to the point that when the brakes are applied the right rear wheel locks up. once stopped and release the brakes they stick then release with a hard thud. very annoying not to mention dangerous especially in snow.i cannot afford to take it to a dealer so i guess i'm on my own. *ak

Steel brake lines on 1999 dodge ram pickup corroding and bursting where line goes over top of fuel tank, brake fluid immediatly dumps and as a result immediate loss of brakes. very dangerous. *ak

Consumer states that while driving at any speed and with no warning brake rotors wore out, causing extended stopping distance. dealer notified. *ak

When applying brakes vehicle pulls sharply to the left. was in 6 times for repair. they couldn't fix it and expected me to pay for their experiments to try to fix it. the chrysler rep tried to get out of paying under warranty. finally fixed. have driven truck about 1200 miles now and starting to pull again! brakes lock-up in a stern attempt to stop. anti-lock brakes are a joke. *nlm

Brakes fail while panic breaking. appears to be complete hydraulic/ antilock failure for the period of braking that would be under antilock control. *nlm

Under panic braking, the braking system seems to fail about the time when the anti-lock should be kicking in. massive loss of pressure for periods of less than several seconds under the panic brake conditions. load and speed do not seem to matter or be factors.*jb

Pick-up pulls hard and suddenly to the right when brakes are applied. pads , proportional valve, calipers, and rotor have been replaced at a great expense, but no effect on the problem. *jb

When parking vehicle and brakes were applied, there was no steering.contacted dealer.*ak

Wrecked prior to sale to me. never reported to me. numerous service bullitons on this equipment, not reported to the owner. no safety defect listed. *ak

The brakes locked up, which caused consumer to pump the brakes. *jb the brakes would lock up when the weather was damp, when not in use for an extended period and when using four wheel drive all the wheels would lock up. this would only happen at temperatures of 32 degrees or colder. the manufacturer was notified and referred the consumer to the dealer for repairs. the transmission leaked at the rear output seal extension housing leaked at the case split silicone seal, the rear transmission seal leaked on the extended housing seal at the transfer case, the radio control had become inoperative, the wipers shorted out, and the fog light switch had gone bad. *scc

Had a flat tire and could not get the rims off the wheel hub--went to dealer and he said to get under vehicle and hit rims with a sledge hammer---this has been ongoing since 2001--right now going thru this problem again after dealer said that it was fixed. *tr

Following the replacement of the front brake pads, the brakes failed, and the vehicle was returned to the dealers service department. the service manager told me that the brake pads had "melted and turned ino wax". it was simply a defective part, and that he had seen it occur previously on a dodge caravan. anyway, i think that brake pads melting is a significant safety concern. my wife narrowly avoided a head on collision when the brakes failed at a construction area, and the vehicle veered into the oncoming lane of traffic -- she did not steer into this lane. she said it felt almost as if the brakes had been greased.

When pressing on brakes pedal might go to floor. only way vehicle stopped was by hitting another vehicle.*ak

Brakes overheating causing wheels to become hot. wheels are condinsating on inside causing rust on inside of wheel causing valve stem failure and tires to become gaulted to wheel making it imposable to save tire for repare. (dot number: m32k tiresize: lt24575r16)

Brakes were applied after a stuck throttle due to mats. when applied no vacuum power available to stop the vehicle. under full manual force on the brake pedal the vehicle was actually accelerating. key off prevented any serious problems. a test found that under full throttle no vacuum is available for braking. all systems are normal and correct otherwise. will not stop if throttle is engaged full, prior to the application of brakes. tired of losing money taking vehicles to and from dealers. i'll have to accept the problem until such time as i can get it looked into. advise testing of vacuum assisted brakes in the future by applying full throttle and then, full brakes. in this case there is no vacuum available. scary!!!*ak

Consumer states vehicle stalls without warning while driving. dealer can not fix problem. vehicle has been in for repair 7-8 times. consumer stated the front rotors were warped and the rear drums were out of round, also the enging light stays illuminated, and the vehicle was leaking fuel, dealer replaced the o-rings.*jb

Front disc brakes pull to left, been to dealer up to 10 or more time, dealer states that chysler knows of problem, brake used in panic stops pulls vehicle into left lane sharply, estimated 5 near miss accidents, i want to know from you if this is a known problem, and can chrysler be forced into recall for final fix?*ak

Vehicle is experiencing problems with the power steering, it locks up while driving and loses power steering while sitting still and without foot on brake, dealer has replaced the power steering pump twice, power steering gear box, installed a vacuum booster, and installed power steering lines, however vehicle still experiences problems. fuel leveling unit was replaced and the sending unit was also replaced, dealer also replaced the instrument cluster due to a faulty fuel gauge. consumer felt pulsation in brakes, dealer found rear drums warped and rotors out of round. *slc

I have heard some talk of someone out in california, refabricting the front brake system to solve this problem. is there any other truck owners that have also heard this? the brake calipers on this 1999 dodge, are almost have the size of the brake calipers on my 1992. the brakes pull hard to the right when braking at any speed, especially during rain. very very dangerous when rainy weather. dealer has been very very good with me in trying to get this fixed. even they are telling me they will have to contact chrysler too. does someone have to get hurt, and file a lawsuit to make anything happen? why wait til one is dead, take action now, this is a safety concern!! lets start a chat section, get everyone together!!!*ak

The truck pulls left when braking. when loaded or towing a trailer you have to have both hands on the wheel or you will be in the ditch or worse yet pulled into oncoming traffic. i have had the truck to 3 different dealers at chryslers request for a total of 6 repair attempts and 28 days in the shop. the last visit was for 8 days and included leaving my truck and trailer yet the truck still isn't repaired. the chrysler rep has placed the blame on my trailer and called my problem a questionable repair because i'm towing a trailer with my truck. worst customer service i've ever encountered!!

While backing out from a parking space and applying brakes, pedal became very hard and resisted. both brakes and power steering failed. cause unknown. *ak.et.

Accepted delivery of vehicle 8/7/99 from timothy dodge. 1/20/00 serviced at timothy dodge - mileage 6,834. truck was pulling severelt to right when brakes applied. brake drums, front calipers, rotor and pads replaced under warranty. this relieved pulling for approximately 1,800 miles. the pulling progressively developed anew. 5/12/00 serviced at timothy dodge - mileage 12,122. trailer harness problem repaired. continued problem with brakes reported to dealer and a rep test drove vehicle. he advised vehicle was braking normally. advised that brakes were a wear item and would not be covered under warranty after 12,000 miles. on 6/12/00 went to timothy dodge for paint touch up and requested a rep to test drive vehicle again regarding the brakes pulling. mileage at that time 13,956. told problem could not be duplicated and that a brake job would cost $200.00 or more. as parts were new, declined brake service at a charge. on 8/10/00 stopped at timothy dodge requesting a service rep to test drive truck again for same pulling of brakes. mileage 16,302. he drove truck in parking lot and advised there was no problem. again declined a brake job at a cost of over $200.00 as parts were still reletively new. on 10/30/00 vehicle serviced at timothy dodge. mileage 20,635. problem with excessive play in steering and continued problem with brake pulling reported to dealer. they again said they could not duplicate the problem reported. no service performed. again told brakes were a wear item no longer covered under warranty. on 11/20/00 vehicle serviced at timothy dodge. mileage 21,596. continued problem with excessive play in steering and brake pulling becomming more severe. steering gear box replced under warranty. upon picking up vehicle, immedately noticed the steering binding and continued excessive play. truck returned next day, and told i should consult another dealership. after doing so, still no redress to date.*ak

Basically the truck pulls to the right almost every time the brakes are engaged every day and at any speed. *ak

Vehicle pulls to the right when braking. had it in to dealer to many times to count. no luck with anything they've done. was surprised to see how many other "victims" have the same problem. hope there's a permanent fix. it will probably take a death or two to get some one off their butt and fix this. *la

Front control arms failed and replaced 3 times. *et

Truck pulls extremely hard to the left when braking. has been in several times and hasn't been fixed, although many parts have been replaced. it has been at the dealer for almost thirty days now and the dealer has given up. it is unsafe to drive so i am making payments on a truck i can't use. chysler hasn't contacted the dealer to try to rectify the situation, they say it will be another week. *ak

While driving on highway and applying brakes, vehicle pulls to the left. at high speed it will jerk the steering wheel out of hand. contacted dealer, and he was aware of the problem. it has been in to the dealer four times. now, it will pull to the right. after a total of 30 days for repairs dealership says vehicle is within specifictions. *ak

When driving and applying the brakes vehicle pulls to the left. at high speed it will jerk the steering wheel out of consumer's hand. contacted dealer, and he was aware of the problem. it has been to the dealer four times. *ak

When traveling at about 60mph on the highway went to apply brakes vehicle pulled to the left. also, steering wheel began to jerk out of driver's hands. contacted dealer who was aware of the problem. *ak

All the brake components except the master cylinder were replaced 7 times starting at 7,000 miles because they either locked up or didn't function at times. an accident occurred due to this failure. also, automatic transmission was replaced/rebuilt 8 times because it blew out, slipped, or dropped down from o/d to regular gear, which started at 5,000/20,000 miles finally, the engine head was replaced twice because it cracked on both sides, which started at 77,000-90,000 miles. *ak
