We have classified the 29 complaints from 2005 Dodge Ram 1500 about WHEELS into the following categories.
09/01/2017 traveling east bound on hwy 12 in san joaquin county at 11:30 pm while driving at 55 mph in between 2 jersey walls i turned left and hit the brakes hard to avoid a broken down vehicle. (note broken down vehicle had no flashers, flairs or any other warning) while applying the brakes the pedal went to the floor. i started bouncing back and forth off the walls. air bags deployed, i was airborne at one point & actually thought i was going to die and when i came to a stop i was facing the wrong direction on the hwy.. i started my vehicle to move over to the side of the road and it wouldn't move. i proceeded to walk around the vehicle and noticed the right rear wheel was missing.i believe when my brake pedal went to the floor that's when i lost the wheel. chp called tow truck and said solo non injury accident no report needed i didn't realize and now it's been brought to my attention that the axle shaft broke on a weld and looks like there were air bubbles in the steel.i don't know if you have had any other issues with axle shafts, but i would like to file a claim. i believe the wreck was much worse due to the axle shaft breaking. truck is totaled with a twisted frame. see also 11073246
I recently had a investigator inspect my vehicle that broke the right rear axle. chrysler got back to me and claimed the break was not from there recall. chrysler avoided my whole complaint of defective material. i was not relying on recalls but the material is not right. i had a couple of professional welders look at the axle and was informed that the break was on a weld, which should have been the strongest point and that the material looks porous. i have already filed a claim on this matter, which totaled my truck due to the axle breaking. see also 11031993
2005 dodge ram 1500 truck 4x2 quad, was in motion at posted highway speed, with minimal wind present. as an eyewitness & owner of the vehicle, the driver suddenly lost control of the vehicle, rolling the truck 4 -5 times before landing on its top (upside down). damage throughout was severe and extensive. no airbags deployed and both occupants were wearing their safety belts. front passenger head rest ripped away from seat and was found about 100 yards away from accident scene, stuck in a bush. right rear tire (passenger side), snapped off and broke away from the rear axel. tire was found more than 100 yards away from the totaled vehicle & tire was not blown out. concerns about 2 safety recalls on this vehicle is the reason for submitting complaint: recall involving a problem/defect with the air bag deployment, and recall concerning a rear axel pion nut coming loose while in motion & causing rear wheel to completely break away from vehicle. defect could suddenly cause driver to lose complete control, causing vehicle to crash and/or violently rollover. this vehicle was serviced for both recalls, twice. however, in this rollover crash that occurred, the rear wheel with brake system still attached, completely snapped off the rear axel. also, the insurance company did an estimate to repair vehicle, but did not include or mention a repair charge for the right rear wheel or the rear axel. the tail gate was also ripped off of the truck and was found about 75 yards away from the totaled vehicle. no fatalities resulted from this horrific crash, but my son who was the passenger, did suffer serious and permanent injuries, which include a head injury (tbi), multiple fractures to his ctl-spine, injured right foot, leg and hip, and abrasions and deep scrapes throughout his body. the driver, my sons girlfriend, suffered scrapes and bruising, but no serious injury. *tt updated 10/1/18*jb
I have reported this issue several times now, i took my vehicle to dealership for replacement of pinion nut on driveshaft to prevent the driveshaft from seperating from the rear end of the truck. my vehicle continues to lock up, rear wheels will lock up when vehicle in put in reverse or in drive, this issue is related to the driveshaft pinion (seperation) and could cause a catastrophic collision endangering my family and any other vehichle in close vicinity of mine while driving. i am afraid to drive my truck due to this issue, i have also considered what will happen when my truck is catapulted from this issue, hoping that my family will be able to file a class action lawsuit against chrysler/dodge for ignoring mine complaints and refusing to fix the problem, once i am killed in an accident from this recall issue. i am very upset that i am not getting any help from dodge for this issue. i know i'm just the little one who bought your product, and care none about me and my family, however, you can and will be sued if i am in an accident due to this recall issue, (my rear axle locking up therefore locking up my rear wheels). everytime i try to move my vehicle, i hear a loud "boom" in the rear of the vehicle and my rear wheels lock up and vehicle won't move. i will hear a loud "boom" in the rear end of the truck while driving. i am very afraid to drive the truck due to this recall issue, and due to the fact that my wheels continously seize up. this has happened at least 20 times in the past month, thank god i have not yet been catapulted, i fear though that it will happen very soon.
Rear pinion nut, drive shaft recall. in novembe while driving the rear pinion nut came a loose sending the drive shaft into the transfer case completely breaking the whole thing ripped the rear gears and locking up wheels.after 2 mos. of trying finally got a chrysler dodge dealer to accept my truck under the recall. after almost a mos. in shop $1100 worth of repairs that i had to pay for that werent there prior to the incident, i got my truck back 2 weeks later it happen again. this time it was just the transfer case that was damaged. towed it back to dealership, this time i had to pay $400 because 4x4 sensor was bad and because of the year of my truck its sold with 2 other switches and they werent going to warranty the work if i didnt pay to have switches changed by them. mind you the light wasnt on prior to this happening the 2nd time. i called chryler corp explained to them what was going on and they told me that there is nothing they can do and they dont get involved with there dealerships. now here i am 2 weeks later took a road trip to georgia and boom it happened again while im driving i just see smoke coming out from under my truck, i manage to pull over and the transfer case explodes again. i get it to dodge dealership in gwinnette they find out the drive shaft is bent and was never replaced from when it exploded the first time. it took chrysler a week to respond to the dealership in gwinnette on how to procede. its been 3 weeks havent gotten a return call from chrysler. no accommadations have been made for me. im stranded with no vehicle wasted my whole entire vacation. vehicle still not repaired.
I was driving on the interstate with my family enroute to south carolina when i started hearing a noise and felt a little vibration on the pedal at first i thought i may have ran over something. then all of a sudden i just heard a boom and the truck just started fish tailin. luckily there werent any vehicles around me at the time, i was able to get to the side of the shoulder. when i looked under the vehicle the drive shaft had come completely out and there was smoke and oil leaking. when we got the truck to the shop and they looked it over the pinion had come completely a loose the seal was shot and chunks of the gears inside was mangled, the transfer case was cracked from the impact of when the drive shaft came apart. i also learned that the truck had a recall on it for this same problem. i managed to get the truck towed back to ny to my mechanic shop. where we have been trying to get dodge to do something enregard to the repairs. what we have been told was that the recall doesnt include my month! my year make and model but not my month. yet i have the same issue as what is stated in the recall.
Driving down the hwy at 65 mph the right front tire blow out the side wall let go it happen twice with firestone tire
While driving and getting ready to make a right turn the passenger side front tire made a noise and fell off from vehicle, causing me to skid on the axle. tore up frame, axle
My sister was in a fatal car accident june 23rd 2015. about a week and a half after her death we received a recall for the trucks rear axle pinion nut. then a week after that we received another recall in the mail regarding the driver airbag inflator. during the incident her trucks right rear tire was snapped at the axle leaving us to believe that the pinion nut was loose and caused this rear axle to seize and break. in the crash all of the airbags failed to deploy. the pinion nut recall was issued in february of 2015 and we are questioning why it took chrysler 5 months to provide us with this information.
I received a safety recall notice from dodge concerning the rear axle pinion nut and passenger air bag. i called the dodge dealer ([xxx]) in omaha, ne. i was informed the necessary repair parts are not available. they have no idea when or if these parts will be available. they tell me that a crash could occur and it is my decision whether to park the car or continue driving. this is not fair. i need a vehicle and cannot afford a new one. my truck is old but only has 46,000 miles on it. thank you. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr
I was at the stop sign on the braga bridge in ma. i started to enter traffic when there was a loud bang and then a bunch of banging, i instantly stopped on the bridge just past the stop sign. i put the truck in park and shut off the engine, i jumped out of the truck but it began to roll back. i had my wife hold the break while i checked. the truck would roll backwards but not forwards. the drive shaft was lying on the ground. we had to wait for a tow truck to move the truck. a flat bed showed up and could not get the truck to roll forward. he then continued to upset me by dragging the truck onto the flat bed as it was the only way to move it. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 dodge ram 1500. the contact stated that while driving at 35 mph, the rear wheels seized and the drive shaft detached from the vehicle. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the vin was not available. the approximate failure mileage was 140,000.
After having been stopped at a stop sign, i made a right turn and accelerated to proceed straight for approximately 300 feet or so where i was going to make a left hand turn into a store parking lot. all of a sudden there was a whining sound and it felt like the engine was straining, there was a loud bang and thud as if i had run something over. the truck started "jerking" violently and came to an abrupt stop. as soon as i put the car in park, the loud noise stopped and the engine was idling normally as if there was no problem. i exited the vehicle and, to my shock, saw the drive shaft detached from the rear differential (the truck is a rear wheel drive) and laying on the street. later on, with the key in the on position but the engine off, i put the car in neutral and some road workers tried to push it off the road. it would not budge. the rear wheels were locked. suffice it to say, had i been traveling on the highway at 55-60 mph the results of the malfunction could have been disastrous. a recall need to be issued immediately before someone gets seriously injured or killed... ....updated 01/12/15*bf *tr updated 6/11/2015*js
Mt r front wheel seized and the whole wheel bearing assy broke in half and the wheel went flying off. this caused my vehicle to hit another car damaging both vehicles. no injuries. *tr
While driving down the road the truck just stalls for no reason. i lose all control. i almost hit a car. i went over the curb into someone's yard. i have seen hundreds of complaints from dodge owners with the same exact problem. there is something wrong with that model. the rpm's jump and the truck just dies. its happened to me on the freeway, on rural roads, and city streets. this is going to cause somebody serious injury. i parked my truck and stopped driving it because it is not safe to drive. something needs to be done immediately. *js
While driving on a side street going no more than 25 miles an hour i suddenly the ability to drive my truck. it spun out a total of 3 times before going over a curb and hitting a tree. it was determined that there was a complete failure of the rear axle and i could not of controlled or caused the accident. *tr
On june 7 2014 we we're driving to a landscape business to purchase some landscape stones and about 100 feet before the entrance of the business my driveshaft fell off my truck causing my rear wheels to completely lock up and nearly causing a catastrophic head on collision after the northbound vehicle had to swerve to miss my truck and almost hit a southbound vehicle head on. i had the truck towed to a nearby auto facility where it was looked at and confirmed that my complete rear differential was completely destroyed causing my vehicle to a complete stop once the driveshaft fell off. it cost me nearly $2000 to get it repaired. i also contacted chrysler via email and explained to them what had happened and their response was that there was nothing they could do and i was out of warranty. the technician at the auto facility that repaired my truck told me that he remembered something about a recall for that on the dodge trucks. i then did some research and discovered that on the newer models there was a recall but not on mine but exactly what happened to the trucks on recall (rear end differential lockup) is what happened to mine. it could have very easily killed somebody if the southbound vehicle hadn't reacted so quickly. my truck only has 66000 miles on it which is an average of only about 6000 miles a year.[xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr ...updated 01/07/15 *bf updated 6/11/2015 *js
Steering almost completely locks up when not accelerating. left wheel does not move as much as right wheel as if it is separate. *tr
About two weeks prior i stated to hear a scrapping sound like the brakes were worn down. the sound would come and go. then i parked the truck. i got ready to leave the business i was at. i pull out from the curb and went about 50 feet and the truck stopped. i back up a little then went forward and stopped again. i immediately pull into a parking lot and got out and checked the right front tire. it hung off the hub at a 45 degree angle. the next day i went back to see what was wrong. i jacked the truck up and the wheel came right off. the wheel bearings had melted into the hub. i have not notified any one about this. i bought the truck used 2 years ago from a dealer. so i do not know if i have original or replacement parts. it cost me over $300 to get the truck repaired. the guy that repaired it said this was his second one in a week. now i have to get a front end alignment. my tire are wearing out on the inside. *tr
On january 26, 2014, my truck with only 59,000 miles experienced sudden catastrophic failure of the front left wheel bearing hub assembly. the front left wheel bearing hub failure resulted in complete separation of the wheel hub and assembly from the truck. this major failure is similar to two previous nhtsa recalls on dodge ram 1500 trucks as outlined below. from my review of dodge message boards, this appears to be a broader issue than covered by the two previous nhtsa recalls. when i contacted the dodge dealership, they said my truck was not within the two recall classes. i believe this is a broader issue and request the nhtsa to further investigate to save the lives of individuals who have purchased this truck. two previous recall efforts: 1) the nhtsa campaign number is 07v-038 (or 07v038000). daimlerchrysler's dodge division is recalling 86,333 of its popular ram 1500 pickup trucks due to a potential failure of the front wheel bearing hub assembly. the recall, under the national highway traffic safety administration (nhtsa), involves every ram light-duty 2006 model year truck manufactured between november 7, 2005 and april 27, 2006. three plants' output is involved: saltillo, mexico; fenton, missouri; warren, michigan. 2) nhtsa campaign id number: 10e040000 : federal-mogul is recalling certain carquest, national, and percision brand wheel hub assemblies, p/nos 515073 and 515073, sold for use as replacement equipment on model year 2002 through 2008 dodge ram 1500 pickup trucks. the inboard roll form used to maintain the hub assembly can fatigue resulting in noise and/or wheel separation on the two wheel drive (2wd) applications. the risk of these issues do not occur on the four wheel drive (4wd) applications, and installation on the 4wd applications are not part of this recall. *tr
I just replaced the driver side wheel bearing, two years ago it was the passenger side. i have spoken to three other ram owners who have had the same experience. *tr
2005 dodge 1500 pickup truck...while driving down highway without any warning other than the wheel started shaking and then broke off the truck and i slide down highway on 3 wheels...dodge sent a third party to the dealership to review...turned down my claim never received a reason...sorry in the parts business wheels don't just break off....need help in this matter...just picked up truck at my expense over 559 miles away... *tr
I have a 2005 dodge ram 1500,4x4,i have had this for 5 years and the whole back of the wheel well is rotted out, really really bad. as i drive around i see all theses same year dodges have the same problem i have noticed underneath the wheel well there is holes they never filled in when truck was built that's where the rust and corrosion builds up from the salt ,water, and snow,,very unhappy with this situation. was hoping there can be something done about this problem now i have to fix this. *tr

Complete failure of the right front wheel bearing causing the wheel assembly to collapse.
Driving during inclement weather event, heard a pop in the area of the right front wheel. assumed it was ice or snow. within the next 20 miles, slight vibration began and grinding noise heard. parked vehicle for week while out of town. returned drove to work, approx 22 miles, problem persisted and got worse, this was during another snow event. decided to seek assistance from local dealership, refused immediate attention, set up appointment for jan. 4, 2010. called local repair shop near home. could get me in immediately. attempted to drive to repair shop. right from wheel bearing failed, causing damage to hub and axle. had to be hauled in because the wheel separated from axle. caused tire to ride up into upper control arm and destroyed tire. searched internet and found that 2006 dodge rams had been recalled for similar problems and that 2002 thru 2008 dodge rams that had replacements with specific brands had been recalled. my vehicle had only 53,412 miles on it when the bearing assembly failed. it has cost me over $600 in repairs that were not covered by the "70,000 mile limited drivetrain warranty." the replaced parts are available and in my possession. it seems to me this is a fairly common occurrence in dodge pickups of many model years including 2005 both 2 and 4 wheel drive. *tr
I purchased a 2005 dodge ram 1500 4x4 2 years ago with 19,000 miles on odometer. i noticed roaring noise and attributed the noise to tires or fact it was 4x4. soon truck began to shudder violently while braking. i made appointment to have the truck inspected at a reputable repair shop. the shop called and said that the wheel bearings on the front of truck had failed due to lack of grease and had to replaced along with rotors that were warped due to intense heat. total bill was almost $800 which i paid. i contacted dodge and informed them of the situation. i also informed them that i felt that 2005 trucks should be included on recall list along with 2006 models with same problem. i was told there is no recall on 2005s and dodge was not responsible for repairs due to expired warranty. wheel bearing failure is dangerous because entire wheels have been known to separate from vehicle and brake locking or complete failure can result from intense heat caused by the defective wheel bearings. *tr
The front passenger wheel broke off at low speed. seems that the lower control arm (axle) just snapped in two. no other vehicles where involved, pot holes or curb. the wheel broke off pulling everything apart inside the wheel well except for the brake line. the truck landed on top of the wheel preventing it from flipping over. i spoke with chrysler dodge and all though admitting that the lower control arm should never break said that it wasn't a defected part because i hadn't had my vehicle serviced through the dealership . this was a very serious and dangerous problem. if it wouldn't have been for only doing 15mph when it happened it would have caused serious injury and possible death. dodge has a known problem with faulty ball joints but don't seem to care all though this may have been a preliminary problem leading up to the axle breaking in two. *tr
Right front wheel assembly separated from the vehicle causing extensive damage to the front suspension, bumper quarter panel. usaa insurance company paid for repair. have filed a claim with daimler/chrysler to reimburse for repair. have no response. *nm
Offset accident at approx 30 mph. hit parked car. damage to fender. passenger wheel broke off. also brake lines severed. result is loss of control and ability to stop. truck is at dealer for repairs. should a wheel break off so easily. what are the standards. i have seen at least one other truck with the same damage. *jb
