We have classified the 71 complaints from 2004 Dodge Ram 1500 about ELECTRICAL SYSTEM into the following categories.
My truck stalls as i come to a stop. this happens probably about 4 times a month since the date above. the dealership hasn't been able to find the problem. i have read on forums online that a ton of other people are having the same problem. some say it has to do with erg valve and it should be recalled. they said they replace the egr valve and the problem is fixed.
Speedometer moves in 5 mph increments when it's not stuck; it also shows vehicle speeds of 5 - 10 mph when stopped and in park. dealer says the entire instrument cluster needs replaced at a cost of approximately $800.00. *tr
About 1 month ago the dash board lights and gauges started to act up so we carried it into the local dealership where we purchased the vehicle. they stated that there was condensation in the fuses. they said it was repaired and charged us about $100. then a few days ago it started to do it again. before we could take it back to be looked at it burst into flames in our driveway at 2 am on 3/2/09. fire dept. states that the fire started under the hood. i've been searching on the internet for an explanation and i've found that there was a recall on 2004 dodge ram's, a short circuit in the generator harness can cause "under the hood fires"! i've contacted the dealership and dodge customer service. they say that my vin # is not included in this recall. it seems like it should... our vehicle was purchased brand new, it had 5 miles on odometer when we left the lot. it had 68000+ miles when it burst into flames. *tr
The anti-lock brake controller in my 2004 dodge ram pickup truck caught fire and burned. the wiring harness completely melted through wires and all, and the brake control mechanism itself melted and burned. the part was inspected by chrysler but in their determination since i am the second owner of the vehicle they are not responsible for any repairs. the service manager at my local chrysler dealer has told me that he has seen this problem before, and i have been told by independent service tech's that this is definitely a manufacturers defect. that the braking controller is drawing more amperage than it should be. chrysler has told me that there is nothing more they will do in this situation. *tr
2004 dodge ram 1500 hemi. fuse box gets water inside and corrodes the circuit board resulting in loss of parking lights, dash lights, more. 2. the rear ends go out prematurely. 3. air bags don't go off in accident 45 mph 4. front rotors warp. 45,000 miles. *tr
About 30 percent of the time, my turn signals and flashers do not indicate the signal i want to give. during those times, when i indicate right it doesn't flash at all. if i indicate left, it indicates right. also if i put on the hazards, it either corrects the problem or it indicates left. this is very frustrating and provides a big safety incident on the road. i have noticed that i am not the only person that has had this before as it is a very common occurrence on the web. it increases substantially during the fall and winter months and is almost not existent during the summer months. it also affects my wipers that when i have the lights on i can see that my vehicle is acting up because the wipers are at 1 detent less than what i am trying to provide. this makes it so i can't use the fast wiping position. thanks for your help. *tr
I have 2004 dodge ram 1500 5.7 liter, it has had a problem with electrical system the wiper will start and stop while it is running and the head lights will flash on when the truck is shut off it has been in the shop more than 7 time and have replace numerous parts. *tr
Have had problem with abs light coming on, and more frequently engine coming to a stall when stopping, believed to being brought on by rapid stopping with abs system activating. have had problem "fixed" twice already -- moisture in c.a.b wiring, water damage several inches into harness with subsequent corrosion, currently in shop being fixed for the 3rd time. ..the engine stalling just started happening within the last 2 months however. *tr
Water is leaking into the wheel sensor causing it to short and then the entire cluster in the dash to short. abs and brake light will come on and speedometer start jumping around. happened in november 2006, had it fixed by dealer and now it has happened again. dealership nor dodge will take any responsibility for it. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2004 dodge ram 1500. the contact stated that the air conditioner stopped working. the vehicle was taken to the dealer and they stated that the wiring for the ignition system burned due to extreme heat. the contact is concerned because the failure could cause an underhood fire. she also feels that the vehicle should be included in nhtsa campaign number 04v385000 (electrical system: alternator/generator/regulator). the speed and power train were unknown. the current and failure mileages were 45,000.
The right lamps are not receiving the proper current, only receiving current while utilizing the park lamp. no brake, hazard or turn lights. ! using the test light i tested every fuse within the power distribution center which indicated in no failures or blown fuses. yet when utilizing the right blinker the relay has a muffled click that was barely audible unlike the left blinker where the relay sounded nice and strong with or without the trailer tow harnesses being utilized. upon research i found that this was a very common problem with various years of dodge lam?s. ii believe that this problem that varies in low or high mileage dodge truck?s needs to be addressed by the manufacturer due to the vast amount of complaints and queries for the same exact problems. i have been told by the dealer that the problem may be the integrated power module), $ 300.00 just so happens to control everything including most importantly the air bag system. *ak
Tl*the contact owns a 2004 dodge ram 1500. while driving 45mph the throttle stuck and the pedal extended to the floor. he was able put the vehicle in neutral; however, after starting the vehicle it accelerated without warning. the vehicle was towed and the dealer stated that the failure was due to a cracked battery. they also stated that there was a software problem with downloading the computer diagnosis to the vehicle. the insurance company stated that the vehicle shut off on 2 occasions when they attempted to start it. the insurance investigator stated that the failure was caused by acid leaking from the battery. they stated that the alternator could have caused the crack in the battery. the vehicle has been at the dealer for 2 months. they stated that the failure was electrical; however, the would need to remove as many components as possible to determine the failure. the cost for the repair was approximately $6,000. the dealer was unable to determine how long it would take to make the repair. the dealer stated that the repair was not covered under the warranty. the manufacturer stated that there was nothing they could do. the maintenance on the vehicle was up to date prior to the failure. the dealer replaced the throttle module, pcm unit, the electrical harness, the battery and the battery tray were replaced; however, the failure worseend. the current mileage was 53,235 and the failure mileage was 53,229.
Tl*the contact owns a 2004 dodge ram 1500 quadcab. on june 2, 2007, the vehicle caught fire after being parked for ten minutes. the vehicle had previously been driven for approximately twenty-five minutes. the fire department inspected the damage and stated that the fire originated from the dashboard. the vehicle was destroyed with the exception of the engine. there was mild property damage, including burned grass and trees. there were no physical injuries or deaths. the contact notified dodge and they offered to inspect the vehicle. the manufacturer issued a reference number because the vin was not associated with any recalls. the manufacturer wanted to seize the vehicle, but the contact's insurance agency advised otherwise due to possible contamination. the manufacturer stated the same thing about the insurance company and that no one will take possession until both parties can inspect the vehicle together in full detail. a police report was filed. the current and failure mileages were 80,000.
Hard starting after (running for a time) and sitting for 30 minutes. it takes some time to restart. *tr
My husband bought our 2004 dodge ram 1500 (hemi) in jan 2004 and has about 130,000 miles now. we had problems with the breaks and rotors just like every one else on here in march of 2005 when driving down the highway with cruise on and the truck lost all power. the rpm went to zero but the truck was still running . to get the rpm to come back on we would have to turn off the truck and restart the truck. every time the electrical light would come on, all while in traffic at 65-70 mph. this went on from march 2005- jan 2007. we have been to the dealer many times and they couldn't get any codes to come up. then in january 07 we got off the highway to stop at a store and had to make a left turn into the store. the truck made a loud pop noise and died. when my husband started the truck back up it was sputtering and wouldn't stay running without keeping the truck above 2000 rpms. i took the truck to my dad who is a robertson tire repair tech. he couldn't get any codes to come up. then about 45 min after letting the truck sit he ran the codes again and got about fifteen codes. we replaced all the sensors and it didn't help so went to the dealer again. they couldn't get any codes and couldn't tell us what was wrong. why it wouldn't stay running. so i just thought i would file my complaint and let everyone know what happens after its done stalling what happens next. i will not buy another dodge. *nm
Abs module failed. water leaking from hood caused abs connector to corrode up resulting in failure of the instrumentation panel (all gauges) including windshield wipers and overhead information center. no anti lock brakes. *jb
Tl*the contact owns a 2004 dodge 1500. when the contact activates the left turn signal, the right turn signal activates instead. he has experienced this failure between 4-8 times within the month of june. the current mileage is 39,153 and failure mileage was 39,120.
Door lock will only open from inside. *tr
At around 8:00 am on october 12, 2006, there was a spontaneous combustion from the driver's dashboard of my 2004 dodge durango while it was parked in the garage (not even turned on). this incident nearly burned our condo unit which was above the garage and endangered my wife and kids who were still sleeping. luckily, my wife awoke and called 911 (incident report #2006-6223247-000 ccfd clark county). after several communications with chrysler dodge, they sent an "investigator" only after 4 days to take pictures; they sent us a letter saying it was not a factory defect and they were not responsible for the damage. when asked what could have been the possible cause -they said they didn't know (?!?). we then consulted and asked help from the dealership (integrity dodge, lv,nv -since we got the vehicle only a year ago and is still under warranty and that it was our only car) they said the same thing and insist we contact our insurance. we asked them why we should use our insurance when there was no accident because the car was just sitting in the garage? besides, if the insurance company were to reimburse us it would be very much below what we owe our bank and would also charge us a deductible. honestly, my family is having such a hard time with what happened and especially when we are also a little tight on our finances since my wife is not working because she is taking care of our 8 year-old daughter and 6 month-old baby; and i just started on a new job. as of now we can't afford fancy lawyers or hire private investigators to scrutinize the cause of the fire -so we don't have anybody on our side. hoping you can help us and thank you very much for your time. *nm
Dt*: the contact stated the vehicle stalled while coming to a stop and while idling. the dealership determined the seals in the electrical system of the transmission (wiring harness) leaked allowing water to get into the electrical system. the wiring to the wiring harness was corroded. the dealership cleaned several connectors and replaced a ground wire. the dealership informed the contact that if cleaning the connectors did not correct the problem, the entire wiring harness would have to be replaced.
I have a 2004 dodge 1/2t 1500 series truck i have had it at the shop 3 time in the last 2 weeks. you can be driving along and all of a sudden it slows down to 5-10 miles per hour for no reason. the shop said it was because of the crank in the computer, the 2nd time it was because of the air conditioner(which it is winter so i don't have it on) and the last time it has been 4 days since they have had the vehicle and still don't know what has caused the problem. so i am still without a vehicle.. i would hate to be driving down the interstate at 55-65 if this thing decides to shut down. because it is all of a sudden. thank you for you time. fyi. *nm
I have an 2004 dodge durango that has stalled 7 times the dealership has done nothing but give me a run around i went to dodge forum and have seen many people have filed complaints with the nhtsa the last time it stalled i was driving with my 8 year old i lost all power this is a serious situation if this were to happen on a major highway there is no way you would get out of the way in time i am very frustrated in the results i am getting from dodge but as i research there are many out there with the same problems and are also getting nowhere something needs to be done i am not wanting a serious injury or death to occur before they take action. *nm
Abs and brake lights on dash on , the speedometer bounces 5 to 10 while in park or at a stop. dealer has had truck 3 times for the same issues.(10/2004 1/2005 10 2005 and on 12/2005) it was repaired by cleaning or replacing speed sensors and abs sensors but it has returned again. *jb
Sudden loss of power steering and power brakes due to engine stalling. engine stalls while driving. event has occurred six times now. once right after i purchased the vehicle and then again at 7642, 9861, 11487, 11898 and 12,009 miles. i lost control of the vehicle during one event as the power loss occurred while i was turning a sharp corner. i went into the other lane of traffic but due to light traffic at the time this did not result in a crash. the local dealer says that they are aware of this problem but the factory hasn't provided a solution. i feel that it is only a matter of time before people are injured by this defect as the sudden loss of power steering can easily cause loss of control. *nm
Dt: the vehicle caught on fire on september 21, 2005. the consumer was driving at 65 mph when it caught on fire. the consumer heard a pop sound coming from under the hood area. the engine started making a clanking noise and surging. when the consumer pulled over there was smoke coming from the side of the hood. and when he lifted the hood it burst into flames. the consumer was not injured. a highway patrol report was taken, chp log number 1217. and fire report engine number 74 incident number 390. when the consumer contacted the insurance agency, they found that there was a recall for the wiring harness. this recall said that there was a possibility of engine fire. when he contacted the manufacturer, they told him that there was no recall on this vehicle. *ak
Like many of the other consumers who have filed complaints about their 2004 ram 1500 5.7l trucks, i too have taken my truck to performance dodge in glendale az to have them fix the stalling problem with my vehicle. the service manager did not know of this type problem happening on this vehicle. after four hours of waiting, they said that they found p2299 brake switch position/apps incompatible, checked brake switch and apps sensor operations, and guess what, all working normally. they then checked mds for tsbs found tech svc bulletin 18-016-05 and performed this service. drove the vehicle home and guess what, same problem. i will be back at the dealer again to play the game. this is a serious safety hazard and should not be taken lightly. since this is our main mode of transportation i very concerned for my family's safety. *nm
Engine shuts off while driving. this happened twice within an hour. i have made an appointment with performance dodge in glendale az to have the problem diagnosed if possible. this may not be able to find the defect unless being driven. *jb
I have a 2004 dodge ram 1500 with a hemi it has a stalling and idle drop problem. i have almost hit other car due to the engine stalling loss of steering and brakes. i have taken my truck in had the upgrade done stalling was less now only twice but idle drops to 300 rpm and bounces around truck shakes like its going to stall then smoothes out and rpms go back to 1100 or so. dealer just keeps telling me they are working direct with chrysler corp on this and they will keep in touch. they have yet to call me i call them once a week to see what is going on and get the same story the are working on it...*jb
i own a 2004 ram 1500. this is truck number 2 of this year and model. i am experiencing the same problems with this vehicle that i was with the last. 1. the rotors and brakes are wearing prematurely. 2. it has stalled on occasion usually when decelerating to make a turn. 3. the transmision will hit a "flat" spot when excelerator is depressed to the floorboard. 4. the radio does not display properly while opperating. it puts out jibberish of numbers and letters. i say this is truck number two because i went to the dealer where i bought the truck and complained of the same excact problems several times on truck one. they were less than helpfull blaming everything other than the truth. i tradded the first truck in and sited my problems with the vehicle. they then stated that it might have been a bad batch. they paid off the first truck and i bought the second one. now i regret that decision. i should have gone with my instincts and contacted my lawyer. because it is still the same problems in a different truck. that is not a lemmon its a poorly built truck fetching top dollar for their company, who will do nothing to correct the problem hopping we go away or out of warrenty!! .
I own and have taken in my dodge ram 1500 several times for stalling. on two seperate ocassions the dealer/service manager said the problem was fixed. on 6/1/05 my truck stalled once again, but this time i was accelerating. i called the service manager and he said,"your truck is one of four that we cannot fix."
Truck was purchased new, problem started about 1000 miles. truck stalls, usually happens at slower speeds such as when you remove your foot from the gas petal to turn. idle drops very quickly and the engine stalls. several times i have come close to hitting someone because the vehicle is hard to stop or turn when you loose power, you also loose the power steering and the brakes. i took it in and they did an update on my computer. update has not stopped this from happening. dealership has told me a new update will be out soon, but that was 5 weeks ago, and it still has not happened. in the meantime the vehicle still stalls out when you are moving!
Check engine lite keeps coming on. have taken to dealer 4 different times. dealer says issue is with o2 sensors. second time in all sensors and computer replaced. still is occurring. dealer said they where bringing in field service tech on 3rd time. last issue occurred 30 march 05. dealer is unable to diagnois case of issue.*ak
700 origianl miles - pin connections(1st shop i took it to said it was reading a transmisstion error, but couldn't fix it); 6000 miles-fuel pump and map sensor; 8000 miles-transmission controller. this has left me stranded, and i've had to have it towed twice.*ak
I have a 2004, dodge 1500 slt ram, hemi sport, with 5422 miles on it, and on feb 21, 2005, i watched as my truck burned to the ground ( literally ), i smelled something like plastic or burnt wire while driving, just prior to discovering my ( now ) parked truck, smoldering in my back yard. i went to investigate the smoldering, and open the truck door after not seeing any flame; however, once i opened the door it was as if someone had lite a flame thrower, and pointed it in my direction. the fire consumed the vehicle so rapidly, i am sure i would not have had time to remove a infant from it's car seat, had my son been in the truck. i allowed daimler chrysler to send an engineer named bob whipple out here to my home. he took just a few pictures, jerked on a few wires, then returned to where ever he came from. he promised me a copy of his report; however, when i contacted daimler chrysler, they blew me off with a " hey! it's not our fault", letter, i tried calling them and they stated that they had no other information for me, even though their vehicle obviously failed electrically, and was under full warranty.
Customer complaint- erratic idling and no power when throttle fully pressed. etc (electronic throttle control) light flashing. vehicle not operable. advise customer to 'cycle' ignition to reset computer. replace computer with upgrade (under warranty). customer complaint - recurrance of previous problem (identical circumstances) unable to identify/isolate/reproduce in shop. advise customer if recurrance to cycle ignition to reset computer. no suggested repair.
Vehicle shut down at low speeds and when making turns, causing the steering and brakes not to operate. manufacturer was contacted by owner.*ak
We had an engine fire. took it to the dealership in boerne, tx, where they fixed it, but did not report the incident to chrysler. we worry about this happening again, and are not satisfied with their explanation. we fear we may have a safety problem. chrysler wants us to deal with our insurance co., but they never were involved, except for the rental vehicle while ours was being repaired.*ak
Ram 1500 stallls for unknown reasons. dealer cannot fix as no failure code was set nor was their any history of the stall in the vehicle computer.*ak
Regarding the stalling problem on a 2004 dodge ram 1500 quad cab hemi sport truck. currently this is the sixth time it has stalled. the latest incident occurred when i rounded the corner to exit the airport parking lot. the vehicle had no power steering or brakes as of the result of stalling and was hard to control. the truck has been to the dealership several times for the same problem and even the district service manager for chrysler has looked at it, but cannot duplicate or find any codes. *ak
Vehicles electronics begin to go buzurk. speedometer goes up and down, registers miles incorrectly, buzzer will not turn off, windshield wipers will not turn off. taken to dealership and were told the wiring system is getting wet. on two occasions they packed wire with grease to keep wiring from getting wet. this quits working within a month or so. this last visit we were finally told that dodge/chrysler was aware this was a common problem with this model truck, but at this time they have not developed a part to repair and have not recalled. we were told they are unable to repair at this time. *ak
The dashboard lights do not work. dealer serviced the vehicle five times, and they still do not work. the consumer cannot see the speed, mileage and other gauges.*ak
While driving in rain my wipers often stop working on high speed which make it difficult to see in a down pour. also my blower fan for the a/c defroster heater etc. stops blowing when tilt wheel is moved to some positions. it has proceeded to the point of not blowing at all and sometimes will start blowing when i am not in my truck with the key out of the ignition. i was told by a dealer mechanic that it is a faulty ignition switch and that he has changed several. he said it is caused from the wiring harness hanging to loose and repeated tilting of the steering wheel causes the ignition switch to break and have a bad connection. this is also probably what causes some trucks to stall while driving. these are all very dangerous situations if they occur at certain times. *jb
Dt: consume rowned a 2004 dodge 1500 ram. sometimes it will stall while consumer was driving. once it caused the consumer to bump a brick wall. which caused a slight dent in the bumper. it has a vibration that seemed to be coming from the transmission. sometimes the vehicle will not start. the rear driver side door would not unlock. when the dealer ran a diagnostic test they said that it was not showing the codes for these problems. after five tries the dealer was able to get the door lock fixed. as for the other problems the dealer put a new computer in the vehicle. this fixed the problem for about a week, and then the problems came back. the manufacturer was the one that said to put the new computer in. *ak
The consumer stated that horn failed. *ak
While driving at 55 mph consumer felt that vehicle started responding sluggishly. after a few miles, consumer noticed fire coming from the driver's side rear wheel. vehicle was completely consumed by the fire. there were no injuries. police and the fire department responded to the scene. *ak
