Problems with 1996 Dodge Neon SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC

Tl* the contact owns a 1996 dodge neon. the contact stated that all braking function was lost while driving at an unknown speed. she stated that in order to stop the vehicle she had to engage the emergency brake. the vehicle was taken to a local repair shop who diagnosed that the rotors, brake pads, shoes, rear brake drums, and two rear flex lines needed to be replaced. in addition, she stated that the vehicle stalled sporadically and without warning. she took the vehicle back to the local repair shop who diagnosed that the crankshaft sensor, wiring harness, speed sensor, coil, valve cover gaskets and timing belt all needed to be replaced. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the vehicle was repaired. the failure mileage was 17,000 and the current mileage was 32,000.

I own a 1996 dodge neon. i took my car in to have the speed sensor fixed on it due to that is the code that came up on the check engine light. after the sensor was replaced the wiring harness under the hood fried 3 feet of it. the mechanic fixed the three feet of wiring and every thing was in working order. i took my car to moses lake which is approximately 100 miles from my house upon arriving. my neon stopped working. i had to have it towed from moses lake to altons tire shop in air way heights because i could not afford to tow it to dishman dodge on srpauge. i have pulled up the recall information on my car and because my vin was not included in the mass numbers it is not under warranty. i truly feel t hat it should be because the harness is fired due to the same reasons. *tr

Dt*: the contact stated there were two problems with the vehicle. there were intermittent problems with all the electrical warning lights on the dash board and intermittent stalling. the vehicle was inspected by a friend who determined the wiring harness was too close to the exhaust and the wiring was melted. additionally, while attempting to apply brake pressure at 60mph, the rear of the vehicle skidded. upon inspection, the contact discovered fluid leaking from the driver side rear wheel. the vehicle was never inspected by a service dealer, however the manufacturer was alerted. there is a recall 96v026000, concerning the electrical system and a recall 96v075000, concerning the service brakes. however, the vin is not included in the recalls.

i have had ongoing problems with my 1996 dodge neon sport, it has been inoperable for the last year or so, due to electrical problems and stalling which i believe stem from the wiring harness. i have had the brakes replaced a few times, the a/c replaced, fuel injection acts up and the fuel gauge fluctuates, my transmission has started slipping, power steering and exhaust are leaking, numerous oil leaks, rear lights/ brake lights have not worked in over a year, driverside window broke along the extending arm inside of the door frame, trunk release is broken and my cruise control is broken! for the last 4months my car has been sitting at atlanta dodge llc! just after leaving it with their service department, i received a call saying i needed a new battery and until it was replaced for $180 they could not do a diagnostic check for any other problems!! the battery was not even a year old and worked fine when i left the car at the dealership!! but in hopes of any decent service i bought another battery from advanced auto parts $40 and took it in myself. during this visit i reminded them that my make and model car was under a recall, they informed me that it was not!! i gave them the nhtsa recall documentation and was told that it didn't apply to my car, only to the neons from the plant in new mexico!! just after thanksgiving i decided to call them to find out what has been going on. i spoke with brian the cs rep. and he informed me that the mechanics could not figure out what was wrong with my car and refused to research any further unless i agreed to spend no less than $250 towards the repairs!! it's not a coincidence that the same parts are in need of repairs as 15,000 other neons -- regardless of which plant the vehicles were assemblied, the defects lie in the placement and/or manufacturing of the faulty parts and should be covered under any relating recalls! *nm updated 12/1505. *jb

This problem has been continuous. the problem i am having with my 1996 dodge neon has also been identified within this same year and model car and a recall was issued, however my car did not come from the same plant as the recalled neons. this does not change the fact that the same problem has been identified in the same product!! the dodge dealership said they would not honor the recall for my neon. is there anything i can do about this? *nm

Consumer was concerned that vehicle would stall when braking. none of the instrument gauges were operating, and the interior light would intermittently coming on while driving. dealer informed consumer that none of the above issues were covered under recall due to vin. *ak

I had the car for just over a year and i have had the brakes replaced twice and the rotors replaced once. all of this happened within about 9 months. i have had the 2 nd pair of brakes now for about 6 months and they already need changed. *nlm

While driving, brakes failed. contacted dealer who stated that brake line rusted, causing the problem.*ak *tt

The vehicle was stalling and the instrument panel did not work at all . the manufacturer stated the vehicle was not included in the nhtsa recalls 96v026000 96v075000. *jb

This is an used auto but it has many problems ,some were told to me by a mechanic that were recalls,there are many things wrong such as the floors fill up with water when it rains,the door hinges have rusted and broke,the brakes squeal,the motor leaks oil around the sealsthe fan doesn't kick on to cool the motor nor does the gauge register when it is hot. are these things that the recalls take care of?*ak

Customer states brake pedal goes to floor at times, dealership informed customer that front brake pads and rotors are worn low, front pads and rotors needed, there is a recall for the master cyliner rear piston seal on vehicles which may leak and cause a partial brake system loss, dealership would not honor master cylinder recall stating vehicle was not included, therefore customer declined to pay for service and vehicle was not repaired. *tt

When starting out when car has sat long enough the brakes make a huge howling sound when coming to a stop. it sounds like something is stuck in the brakes. taken to shop and they that there is nothing wrong with breaks. can't find problem.*ak

Consumer contacted dealer about recall#96v075000/manufacturer's recall 687, and dealer said parts will not be in for about 3 months. *ak

Vac assist sourced thru egr valve. leak in egr valve allows exhaust condensate in vacuum assist - freezes in cold weather, brakes won't stop car

Vehicle squeals when brakes are applied. twice pads and rotors were replaced at 35,000 and 80,000 miles. squealing stopped for 1 week. started squealing again. consumer's mechanic repaired vehicle. *ak

Oil leak is due to a gasket; transmission went out(could not use reverse until car was on 20 minutes or more), paint has been peeling for about 6 months now, numerous sets of brakes replaced

After stopping a couple of times, and at third time steering wheel shimmied and shook. *ak front brake rotors on both sides decomposed and flaked off inchunks which get caught under brake pads causign the steering uncontrolable. rotors and pads were replaced. *yh

Brakes do not catch when needed in an emergency situation. brake pedal goes all the way down to the floor, and vehicle loses power. *ak

Consumer was accelerating to 45 mph when the the forward gears failed, the transmission was replaced. *slc

The following are a list of problems we have had with this car: air flow knob failed, valve cover gaskets 3x's, head gasket, squeaking brakes, camshaft sensor seal failure, spark plug o-ring, spark plugs and wires, rear suspension came loose, loud exhaust. show us you can do the people who need your help some good. get us some answers!!!!!!

Engin ehead gasket blew out every 6-8 months/ brake caliper collapsed , and instrument panel dead; no assistance from dodge. *ak

It happens probably 2 times a day. when i am almost stopped from a slow speed pulling in a driveway, it sounds like the abs brakes are going off. they make a funny vibrating noise and the brake pedal goes wacko. it doesn't want to stop. it seems to happen more now than ever before. i took it to the dealer and they said nothing was wrong, yet i know that this is not right. i feel very uncomfortable and scared that one day it really isn't going to stop. please advise if you have any ideas. thank you!

The abs brakes locked up while traveling approximately 30mph on wet pavement. another vehicle had crossed center line & brakes were applied quickly. the other vehicle was broadsided. at the time of impact, the air bags did not deploy. no injuries. has police report. *ak

Abs brakes would make squealing noises first thing in moring, but later squealing noises would disappear. brake pads are worn down. passenger's window would be whistling; has no weather stripping. the spark plugs keeps blowing out. also, engine head gaskets are not working properly. whenever the spark plugs are blown, the vehicle would just stop running. *ak

First, when it is cold, my brakes do not work. at first they do not go to the ground and the car takes a long time to come to a stop. fortunately this has only occured when car is started or when it is going less than 5mph. independent mechanic looking at it now. has replaced some brakes pads and services the brakes. water was found in a valve for the power assisted brakes, but the problem still occurs. this mechanic believes water is getting into the brake line but is unsure as to how. the problem does not occur every time i drive it so just when it seems to be okay the brakes fail again. another problem is the windows. even when the defrosters and defoggers are on, the side windows never defog, i need to constantly turn on rear refrost (every 5 min or so) so that i can see out of it. this is a new problem this winter. i cannot see out passenger or driver side window while driving. a third problem is the passenger side window, this is not a new problem . even when the window is all the way up wind howls in the window. you can see a gap and if it is raining water comes in. finally the last problem is also not a new problem. i does not seem to be related to the last problem because it occurred long before that problem. after it rains, water collects in the well between the inside an outside of the door (mostly on passenger side, but occasionally on drivers side) consequently when i open the door a puddle of water falls out on my feet. in the winter the water in the will freezes making it difficult ot open the door. i informed the dealer of this problem when it first occured and they informed me that it occured with all of the cars and that it was just a design flaw and they could do nothing about it. i left it at that although it bothered me. i am complaining now because so many things seem to be going wrong with the car.

Brakes seemed low and mechanic checked, no repairs. when driving at 30 mph, applied brakes and extended stopping distance occurred, when pumping brakes they get better. dealer not aware of the problem. problem still exists. provide further information. *ak

Whenever the brakes were applied, they would squeak. had noticed the rotors were rusting out. had taken vehicle to dealer & told would not repair the rotors due to state using salt on the road. also, the head gaskets had blown & started to leak a lot of oil. *ak

When driving there is a loud noise coming from the vehicle, and when applying the brakes there is a loud noise coming from the brakes. the brake pads and the rear brakes had been changed. also, there is a problem with the right radio speaker. *ak

Consumer experiences random brake failure due to premature wear of pads and shoes, which causes vehicle not to stop properly when brakes are applied. vehicle been in/out of dealer shop on several occasions. dealer infomed consumer that nothing could be found. this incident is one of the factors which causes a vehicle to be totaled during an accident. dealer notified. *ak

When consumer drives vehicle about 20 mph and steps on the brake pedal to stop vehicle, the brakes start making noise like grinding metal to metal. sometimes she loses control of the vehicle while vehicle it is pulling to the left side. consumer had repaired the brakes before for this problem. dealer was contacted. *ak

Had head gasket replaced in july 1998. currently, leaking again. dealer told consumer first time, dealer had to use faulty part. dodge paid for repair first time. currently, they refuse. also, had to have air conditioner and cruise control replaced. *ak the a/c failed for the second time. brakes make loud noise. *yh

Brake problem; when applying the brakes under normal conditions the vehicle does not come to a complete stop until the brake pedal is equal to the floor. this happens on regular road condtions, no inclement weather. dealer is aware of the condition, attempted to fix 6 times. consumer still experiencing brake problems. *ak

Purchased in july of 1996 only put on 26,345 miles motor mount repaired twice,brakes front replaced they were completly gone ,back brakes are no good need to be replaced, high pitch squealing comes from them ,oil gasgets had to be replaced, stearing to a hard right or left you get a grinding noise, transmission is know leaking constantly having to put transsmission fluid in all the time have a list of papers from the car being serviced at daimler on andover st in peabody were i purchased car also wrote to main office to see if they would replace the vehicle after purchasing with cash and just got the run around know i am afraid to drive her that is why she only has 26,345 miles on her in 10 years i am not a rich person so i can not afford another car if there is a recall on any of these problems i would like to know so they can be fixed so i can drive her without worrying what will happen next also dampness and mildew smell and other problems.tires also were replaced they wore to quickly.*ak

Brakes went out on vehicle while braking. vacuum booster was replaced which did not correct problem. also brake rotors was replaced, but problem remains. *ak

Transmission malfunctioned. in addition, premature wear of front brake pads/rotors/headlights failed/electrical short due to severed wires/winshield washer bottle had hole in it and installed horn. *ak

Driving 55-60mph on highway; was cut off by another vehicle; neon hit retainer wall due to failure of brakes. upon impact with wall, air bags did not deploy. was at dealer prior to accident several times about brakes. *ak

Brakes failed on several occasions, once resulted in an accident.

While making lane change, right to left, left front wheel locked up, vehicle skidded, hit curve, no warning, vehicle at dealership. *ak
