Recently reported EQUIPMENT problems on 1995 Dodge Neon

Peeling paint on my 1995 dodge neon. i am on my third transmission, replaced air conditioner because of smoke under hood, brakes, rotors, fuel leaking, valve cover gasket, head gasket, no oil in engine had it towed. i also in the time i own my neon i have had all kinds of problems. after replacing all this i only had one recall sent to me on the steering coupler. i had that fixed at the dealer. but, i haven't had any other recalls sent to me. 2 transmissions and alot of money spent on a lemon. *tr

On august 12th while driving on scatterfield dr, an area of high construction, my 1995 dodge neon suddenly stalled and quit right in the middle of traffic. i had a full tank of gas so i knew that was not the problem and luckily it was a construction area and traffic was moving rather slowly. i was able to pull off the road and the car would not start so i caledl peyton well auto at (765) 644-1111, who on august 11th had just repaired my car for similar problems that included my battery light coming on and then the car may or maynot start.they sent a tow truck to get me. a month earlier the car stalled and just quit and i had it towed to this same dealership who charged me 300.00 to fix the electrical suspension and harness. on august the 11th i was told it was the starter and that cost me another 300.00. after researching the recall list i found recall information # 94v033000 that identifies powertrain control module problems that should be replaced. this was obviously never completed on this vehicle. i am scared to drive the vehicle. the peyton well service advisor ben woodfill stated if anything like this happened again they would fix it for free but this was after telling me that the main harness to the motor needed replacing and that they had found some corrosion on another electical part and cleaned it up on august 12th. my fiance spoke with the service advisor and stated that we were under the impression the problem was fixed the first time when we had it towed in but now they were telling us that it would cost and additional 700.00 to get this so called main harness replaced. it was then that mr. woodfill confered with his manager and they stated they would fix anymore problems like the ones i have had for free. to me this is unacceptable. if they know there is aready a problem then why not go ahead and fix it. don't wait until my car stalls in 65 mph traffic and it is too late. please help!!! *ak

I won a 1995 dodge neon and this car has a head gasket leak.there is a constant smell of burnt oil and i am afraid that this engine may catch fire someday. i have to talked to several mechanics and this headgasket leak is very common in dodge neon's and the local car dealer said he could do nothing about it.i did an internet search and found quite a few complaints about the dodge neon headgasket leak.i bought the car from a private owner but the problem is that the daimler-chryler corporation created a defective headgasket and i am very worried that this is a fire risk.the engine is very oily and there is a constant smell of burnt oil.i have also read on the internet that certain dodge dealers are repairing the headgasket .at times some smoke has come from the engine.

While driving speaker located on passenger's side caught on fire. before the fire when turning on radio sometimes it did not come right on. please provide any further information.*ak

Attempt to have chrysler fix head gasket failed; would not authorize replacement of head gasket because car is used, near 100000 miles, and six years from manufacture; head gasket must be replaced by me at my own cost; a/c leak has never been completely determined, although several leaks were found and fixed; blower motor recently died. linkage "blew apart" at some point in 2001 and had to be repaired using oem washers and nuts. *ak

After inspecting vehicle had noticed air conditioning leaks on passenger's side panel. taken vehicle to dealer, but defect could not be repaired.*ak

All components listed had early/premature failure. worst situation is head gasket. would like to be part of class action lawsuit against chrysler if applicable.*ak

Air conditioner problem- had 4 separate leaks in 4 seperate places, o'ring, compressor switch, and evaporator switch. master cylinder leak, oil would leak all over the ground and engine. stall while driving- car would cut off suddenly and without warning

Engine head gaskets have prematurely blown out, causing the engine to completely malfunctions.*ak head gaskets failure caused the vehicle over heated, engine kocking and steam, bubbling/cracking of coolant container. a/c malfunction and fan motor becomes lhot when turning on. *yh

This problem of defective head gaskets is widespread, and should clearly be a manufacturer recall. the consumer is getting screwed on this vehicle. what does it take to make the powers that be see this and to do something about protecting us from defects that should be corrected by gmc? *ak

Radio speaker on right passenger's front door shorted out, causing an electrical fire. *ak

Head gasket defective, cuasing major oil leak. local dealer said it's common problem for neons. contacted dealer that sold it and chrysler.

We had trouble with a "short" for almost 2 years - went to 3 different dealerships with repsonse "nothing shows on the computer" & "replaced the radio. *ak

This car has been in the shop about every other month since we bought it. very disapointed in we have lost alot of money trying to keep this vehicle.

Air conditioner blows hot air instead of cool air. took to dealer & was informed the compressor was not working like it should. dealer did not repair problem. *ak

Air conditioner compressor and evaporator failure.

Within the last 8 months a/c compressor went out; the speed control surged, worked intermittently then stopped functioning; the left rear abs wheel speed sensor failed causing the system to work intermittently; the engine head gasket blew and my rear window blew out and shattered when i closed the door during 00f weather. presently i have had no response from the manufacturer stating the technicality of "out of warranty" "nothing we can do" deaf ears. i would greatly appreciate any assistance or suggestions on how i can proceed to recover some of my costs for repairing so many items that have failed within a short period of time.

The air conditioner lost its cooling. took to dealer and had it diagnosed. the mechanic said it was a leak in the evaporator inside the cab. *ak

As soon as this car hit 36000mls the problems just added up. everytime i turned around something was going wrong this car. chrysler were the worst manufaturer i had ever dealt with and will never buy anything from then again. we had to let the car go back because we could no long afford the repairs on it. the cruise control had to have some thing to do with the computer, and was replacedby myself. the alternator went bad was replaced by myself. the radio went bad was replaced by myself. the transmission had a pin that was not fitted and wore a hole through the transfer case. malfunction!! we could not afford it and did not repair.

Air condition failed due to compressor failure. mjs

Since the purchase of my neon in may '95, i have had nothing but costly problems. this past year, alone, the repair, towing, and car rental expenses have exceeded $5000.00. this car is costing me a fortune to maintain, as these are major components that are malfunctioning. the items i have registered complaints on are just a few of the items i am having problems with. in just over a year, i have had to have a head gasket replaced, my air compressor seized, almost resulting in a fire, my throttle body had to be replaced, they still can't determine why my brakes squeal constantly. although i have heard that this, among other things, is a very common and dangerous problem with the '95 neons. my my engine controller had to be supposedly updated, my engine skips, but the dealer says nothing is wrong with it. my warning lights don't work, with these problems, you would think that you would have some kind of warning. and now, i have had to replace gear shift cables, and as of yesterday, i had a clutch cable snap which may have caused transmission damage. i have been told that the clutch cable has been updated 3 times for the '95 neon because of problems with it, i will be investigating this further. my air compressor has malfunctioned twice since i have had the car, as well as the evaporator. for what it has cost me to repair this car, because chrysler refuses to admit fault, although it is obvious that this model and year is a lemon, i could be driving a mercedes benz!! i have never been so disappointed in a vehicle as i am with this neon! and obviously i am certainly not the only person with constant problems and astronomical repair costs being incurred. it is quite obvious by this database that there are many other people who are in the same boat i am in. chrysler has made not only a poor product, but also a dangerous product. i can't believe that they would knowingly sell a vehicle to so many people with the problems that the neon has had. thieves!

Air conditioning "o-rings" failed. *ak

Soft brakes, master cylinder replaced.

Air conditioner short.

Brakes squeal after recall repair.

Air conditioner leaking freon into vehicle, making passengers sick. tt

Spark plugs failed.

Fuel pump - has extra port that is capped with a non-reenforced rubber cap. the rubber cap appears to have exploded on the end of the cap while the car was sitting in a parking lot. the rupture of the cap allowed gasoline to drip about 1 drop per second. on this car the exhaust pipes are close to the fuel tank. gas fumes were highly noticeable in the passenger compartment. thank goodness for nonsmoker, no sparks, and a guardian angel...my daugther drove the car 7 miles home. this reminds me of the ford pinto fire possibilities. mopar parts does not stock the rubber cap (maybe $1) but will sell the entire fuel pump for just under $300 plus installation. 2) engine - engine failed on cylinder 4 with lost power, etc. had warranty and most of part/labor covered. called chrysler hotline several times and was assured there were no problems being reported with this car (same story at dealer). 3) brakes/air conditioner - failure occurred after car 1 yr old, warranty covered most of costs 4) the failure of the fuel pump component is the most startling of the problems with this car. i sincerely hope that no other neon owner ever experiences this part failure. *ak

Front seat belts defective.

A/c fan malfunctioned. *ak

Brakes squealed immediately, began to take longer to stop. *dsh

Fuel sending unit failed. *tt
