2001 dodge intrepid. consumer writes in regards to a warranty claim issue on a new oem a/c compressor that failed four months after installation. *smd

Air conditioning and heating system stopped working intermittently for the last four years. we have done regular maintenance on this religiously. *ak this last time, it was making a knocking sound and barely made it into my driveway. upon getting it to my mechanic, was told that the water pump and fuel pump were both going out and that the head gasket was toast, and that they would not work on it because the engines are notoriously bad and not worth it. sludge build up was also present. engine is now blown, and we still owe money on this thing!

Dt*: the contact stated while traveling 50 mph on dry road conditions, a thumping noise was heard coming from the front end, and smoke escaped from under the hood. also, smoke entered the cab at the same time the thumping sound occurred. the vehicle was pulled over and flames erupted from under the hood seconds later. the fire department was contacted, extinguished the fire and determined that the fire was caused by an air conditioner hose that blew up. no injuries were sustained and a police report was not taken. the vehicle was later inspected by a certified mechanic, who determined that the air conditioner hose was too close to the manifold. the vehicle was towed to the residence and had not been repaired. the contact planned to contact the manufacturer after filing a complaint with the nhtsa. *ak

Dt*: the contact stated while traveling 75 mph the transmission failed and the engine stalled. the vehicle would not restart and was towed to an independent repair shop where the transmission was rebuilt. later, without warning the engine squealed and stalled. the vehicle was towed to the dealership and it was determined the problem was due to the air conditioner. *ak updated 9/11/2006 - *nm

Dt*: the contact stated the vehicle's air conditioning has failed the windows will not go up or down. the problem is intermittent. the window issue causes too much heat in the vehicle. the contact expressed other dodges have a related issue the body module, and this may be the cause of the prolems with the vehicle.*ak

My wife and i bought a 2001 dodge intrepid in 2001. the timing chain went out on us twice, the first time my wife was driving it and it was shaking and rattling. we took it to the dealership and they fixed it under warranty, without informing us of the problem with these 2.7 liter engines. the second time i was driving home from work on the freeway and the car lost compression, i pulled off the freeway and then couldn't start the car back up again. i had it towed to the dealership, they told me we needed to get a new engine which would cost us about $7,000 dollars, or they could try to fix the timing chain again for around $1,000 dollars, but there was no guarantee it would start. we called the dealership that we bought it from they told us they couldn't help us since it wasn't under warranty anymore. they said we could try to contact chrysler, but they probably would not help us. so now we have a five year old car that we can't use and can't afford to get fixed. we are a young family with a 2 year old and 3 month old, and would greatly appreciate some help in this matter. thank you for your time. *nm

8/13/02-we took our 2001 dodge intrepid 2.7l in to the dealer for warranty repair. the headlamps were change because of fogging lens covers. the power steering pump was whining so that was also replaced. the vehicle had 31,207 miles. 1/14/03-with 36,354 miles on it we had the rear glass replaced because the defroster was not working. no cost for this. also had them check a knocking noise in the front end but they could not diagnose the problem. 12/16/03-47,658 miles. engine light on for a problem in the evap system. dealer fixed it for $248.69. we had them check for the front end knock but they could not find a problem. they also recommended that we have the timing chain tensioner looked at. i did not ask them to check that at all since everything seemed fine at the time. looking back i can see that they were trying to prevent something they knew was going to happen in the future! 06/07/04-54,932 miles. the a/c stopped working. had the dealer diagnose the problem for $70.51. they said the condenser was leaking. i repaired it myself for about $200.00. 01/05/06-74,600 miles. vehicle started knocking louder and louder while driving one day so i decided to drive my other car. the next day i tried to start the intrepid but it would not fire. a mechanic diagnosed it as a timing chain problem. fix would cost around $1,500. oil changes were made every 3000-5000 miles and sludged with a oil flush because oil would evaporate. *jb

Dt: the contact stated after turning the engine off, the vehicle would not restart. the vehicle had to be towed to the dealership, who discovered that the engine had sludge build up, and would have to be replaced. he chose not to repair the vehicle. *ak the air condition and heat did not work and the timing belt was loose. updated 12/27/05. *jb

I ave a 2001 dodge intrepid and at just under100k the engine seized up and blew the head gasket. i then purchased another engine that cost me $2500 14 months ago. this new engine had 40k on it. that engine has now seized up and blown the head gasket. i was in a parking lot and a lady came up to me and asked if i have had any problems with my intrepid because she has the same one and just had to replace the engine. when are they going to be responsible for producing such a poor product that they charge tens o thousands of dollares for. when it wasgetting towed the guy said that he tows a ton of these. i have done some research and the 2.7 liter engine has had tons of problems.

We have a dodge 2001 intrepid with the 2.7 liter motor. according to other mechanics and personnel within the dealership, there are defects with this motor that chrysler refuses to address. it has to do with internal components and causes the motor to basically blow up. our first motor blew up at 83,000 miles and the dealership installed a different motor with 58,000 miles which blew up again 3 weeks later. today, september 19, 2005, we were to take possession of our repaired car with its third motor within 2 months and were asked to pay a portion of the bill because the dealership claims that this repair was due to a faulty water pump even though the water pump and the timing chain assembly are one and the same on this vehicle. it is my opinion that these 2.7 liter motors are defective as thousands can attest on the internet, chrysler knows they are defective but dahmer refuses to act responsibly because they purchased the company after the defect originated. these 2.7 motors which are sitting on the shelf at junkyards across the country have become worse because the passage of time sitting on the shelf and are worse than the original motors put in them. furthermore, our extended warranty company, triad advantage, foreseeing the problems to come, shut down, went out of business and took the money and ran when these claims were becoming apparent. *nm

Normal driving on interstate. engine light came on. before i could get onto next exit (1/4 mile), engine started knocking. took exit and pulled directly into closed car dealership parking lot. engine died. oil leaking from engine. called mechanic. towed car to his shop. had car for 6 months trying to find replacement engine. put in rebuilt engine. after 5 months, engine began knocking as before. stopped immediately and had towed to my house where it now sits. 1st engine and parts not available. *jb

Nasty smell from a/c, suspension/axles and other problems with dodge intrepid. *bf there were scratches on the cover of the radio program, problems with the window and door lock, the right passenger front had pin holes, the front end was loud grabbing and knocking, the driver door window displayed a thump noise and the motor on the window continued to run even after the window was closed, the passenger seat cover had a big gauge which was made on the console and the glove box cover door, there were spots on the interior of the front head light inside of the glass, the engine would surge, the front passenger door made squeaking noises, air bag light was intermittent, speaker damage, the right and left front windows squeaked mostly on the left side motor, the right window did not work at all, the left rear anchor cover was broken, the brakes were noisy, the engine light was intermittent, the tire experienced excessive wear, and there was a grabbing on right turns. recall#03v035000. *sc

The engine system light appeared on the dashboard, and the engine jerked. the vehicle was taken to the mechanic, who stated the oil pump blew out, therefore the engine died. *ak dealer stated since consumer didn't purchase an extended warranty, they weren't going to cover a new engine. *ph. also the air condition made a strange noise. *jb

I was a victim of an accident, another vehicle had struck me in the rear of my vehicle. upon inpact the drivers side seat that i was sitting in had totally colapsed backward. injuries where sustained to neck and back which was confirmed by medical expertise. i truly believe that the injuries where from the seat breaking, giving no support thus allowing my body to jolt backward and bounce around.this is a serious saftey hazard that needs to be addressed before lives are lost. *ak
