Tl* the contact owns a 2000 dodge intrepid. the contact stated that while driving approximately 5 mph into a parking space, the engine stalled without warning. upon restarting, the vehicle resumed normal function. the failure recurred twelve times. in addition, whenever accessing the exterior front and rear passenger locked power doors, they failed to release open with the key fob. the failure recurred twelve times. the vehicle had not been diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the problem. the approximate failure mileage was 42,000. the vin was unavailable.

Car was maintained immaculately, 3 weeks before the doa date, there was a very faint ticking sound (like a roulette wheel spinning "click" sound) coming from under the hood. took the car to the mechanic to have the oil changed and have the cars new noise checked. he said it could be a lifter ticking and the oil change solved the problem. he was correct about the sound muting however the issue may be the tiny oil port holes in these mitsubishi made mopar engines. on the day of the engines death it made the same ticking sound, my cue that i could share with anyone about to have this failure occur, when i would start the car i noticed an extra "spinning" sound under the hood when i would start the car. it is minor so listen close to your start-up. the ticking got louder and eventually at a stop light on the way to the mechanic the car stopped and would not run. do an internet search for dodge intrepid 2000 2.7 liter motor you will find a horror show on the internet. loved the car while it worked but the death was too premature, i only drive about 8,000 miles per year. *tr

I bought my dodge intrepid in june of 2010 knocking in the engine i have never ran the car over 55 mph no warning lights came on kept car up to date on maintenance oil changing and everything else checked oil it was out had it changed 2 weeks ago and also when i added more oil in the car the oil came up on dip stick very sludgy found out i need a new engine by a mechanic. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2000 dodge intrepid. the contact stated that while driving at approximately 50 mph, the engine would not accelerate normally and the oil light illuminated. the vehicle also began to emit smoke. the vehicle was towed to a local repair shop where the contact was informed that the engine had blown out and it needed to be rebuilt. the vehicle had not been repaired at the time of the complaint. the failure mileage was approximately 149,000.

We lust purchased a used 2000 dodge intrepid it had 105,000 miles on it , it was in great condition until may 21,2010, i was on my way to my parents house and the car starting making funny noises and it just cut off with us, we tried to start it back but it failed, had it looked at, they are telling me it needs a new engine, needless to say the cost is outrageous!!!!!! i love my car, but as i read on the internet there is alot of engine problems with the 2.7l engines, is there any thing that can be done about this? *tr

I purchased a 2000 dodge intrepid with a 2.7l engine from a previous owner. i put an additional $400.00 in maintenance and repair parts (including fresh oil and filter) into it and the engine literally blew up the first time it was driven 20 miles. i am a 55 year old woman that had to abandon the vehicle on the road and arrange for removal. replacing the engine with a non-defective one is cost prohibitive to me. *tr

2.7 bad motors. *tr

I would like to file a complaint on the 2000 dodge intrepid, 2.7l engine. i had a front end crash with no apparent engine damage. when the cosmetics were repaired and i cranked the engine again the oil light came on and it was not running smoothly. oil light goes on and off at times and now has knock in engine. i blame this on a design flaw in the oil galleys of the 2.7 engine. *tr

30 miles from home jan. 2010 driving a 2000 dodge intrepid without warning blinking oil light, hammering engine, less than a minute later complete engine failure. car now sits in my driveway.have made no repairs as it is $3500, i've been quoted. still 10 payments to go on this vehicle. car ran like a dream before this experience. no problems at all, reg oil changes and maintenance. *tr

2000 intrepid with a 2.7l engine seized up during driving 12/3/09. auto center suggests this is an engine failure like so many other chrysler product of this type. *tr

Hello my name paula howard. my 2000 dodge intrepid just died while driving the other day. i called my husband, when he lifting the hood of my car there was steam coming out of the engine. he then checked the oil and saw antifreeze in the oil. i have since taken the car back to my dealership since i have owned the car for less than a year. they of course will not touch it or warranty it. they want a lot of money to even look at it. i started researching and found that i am by far not the only person with this problem. can you help? *tr

Engine failure on 2.7 litre engine in a 2000 dodge intrepid. i was driving on a 100km speed limit highway when i had engine failure. there was no place to get off safely so pulled over to the right as far as i could. still traffic had to steer around my dead vehicle causing an unsafe road condition which could have ended in a bad or fatal way. there is a design flaw with this engine with many complaints registered with different entities designed to collect this information. the maker refuses to acknowledge the flaw and compensate in one form or another. this engine make is a safety hazard and the maker should be made accountable. *tr

Driving along roadway car made loud noise and stalled could not restart car had towed to garage and was told engine had seized needs to be replaced had no warning will cost between 2000and 3500 to replace engine. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2000 dodge intrepid. while driving between 68-69 mph with the cruise control activated, the temperature gauge went high and the oil warning light illuminated on the instrument panel. the contact pulled the vehicle over to the side of the road and noticed a small fire under the hood. the fuse box and several wires were melted. the contact extinguished the flames. the police and fire departments arrived at the scene and both filed reports. it was unknown if the vehicle was destroyed at that time. there were no injuries. the current and failure mileages were 114,000. updated 07/17/09 *bf updated 07/20/09.*jb

I own a 2000 dodge intrepid with a 2.7 engine. this is not my first car by far and i don't race it or anything. i began having problems with it in 2007 with approximately 80,000 mile on it. i had an oil sludge problem and had to replace the engine. i paid 3500 us dollars to replace it and now at 102000 mile the same problem. the engine is under warranty but i still have to pay for the labor which is 1000 dollars. this is really not good the car is a good car when running correctly but this engine issue is very poor and not something expected for a dodge car or engine. something must be done. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2000 dodge intrepid. while exiting the expressway at 40 mph, the contact heard a strange noise and pulled into a gas station. when she attempted to restart the vehicle, the engine shut off. the contact will have the vehicle towed to her residence. the vin was unknown. the current and failure mileages were 130,000.

Tl*the contact owns a 2000 dodge intrepid. while driving less than 50 mph, the motor failed. one week prior to the incident, repairs were made to the vehicle, including the water pump. the vin was unknown. the current and failure mileages were less than 135,000.

Tl*the contact owns a 2000 dodge intrepid. when the contact merged into traffic at 40 mph, she heard a clicking sound and the vehicle suddenly stopped. she was able to restart the vehicle and drive home. the following day, the vehicle would not start and was towed to a repair shop. the diagnostic indicated that oil sludge damaged the engine. the repair cost was estimated at $5,000. the manufacturer will be notified. the current and failure mileages were 135,646.

2000 dodge intrepid motor failure due to oil sludge buildup despite regular oil changes. *tr

The 2000 dodge intrepid all at once would not start. i came out of the grocery store and it had a weird "clicking sound". my mechanic said the timing belt broke. he said that this model is notorious for this, that the oil reservoir gets clogged no matter the maintenance and that the breaking of the timing belt ruins the engine, unlike other cars that have safety measures to prevent engine failure. the oil can no longer reach the top of the engine and it burns up breaking the timing belt. the oil level when checked was fine. a full tune up was done on the car just a few months before, same mechanic. the new engine, because dodge does not sell the old one any more, i wonder why, is $5400. i still owe $4500. on this car. dodge, from what i gather on the net, has thousands in class action suits over this. they will not change out the engines for us or recall of any kind. this car was sold to me off a lot, the guy took me right to it. i bit. i'm '!@#$%. there is no correcting the problem. i don't have the money to fix dodges' way of making millions off the consumer. we will not buy american again. and yet they will go to the senate and ask for more money to get out of their jam. i say let them sink until they make a better product. every other business out there has to learn and do the same in america, why not them??!!!! why are they not held accountable??!!!! i hope my words make a difference. *tr sincerely,

My water pump blew unexpectedly while driving to the gas station without any previous problems or indications of a problem whatsoever. i thankfully was turning into a gas station when my car suddenly stalled and was able to continue rolling in the parking lot and just made it before an oncoming car almost hit me. i took the car to a local repair where it cost 834$ just to repair because of the extensive work involved in replacing a waterpump on that 2.7l v6 pos dodge intrepid. the following week while driving to class, i parked and the car engine started revving up by itself once again with no prior indication of a possible problem. i called the repair shop and he said bring it in i barely made it to the repair shop and once again as soon as i turned in the parking lot my car stalled and wouldn't turn over afterwards. by that time the check engine light had come on they said it was a generic camsensor/crankshaft error they cleared out the error code ran the car for over four hours leaving it idle, driving it, and letting it sit and cool down and doing it all over again the car never did it again so they assumed the it was just a gliche in computer and nothing was wrong. approximately a week later i was driving home from my friends house where my car started jerking when going into different gears. i tried as hard as i could to get it to the repair shop to avoid any further towing fees which have cost me up to about 200$ already. i was stopped by a stop light of a busy intersection that was about 3 blocks away from the repair shop&it was pouring down rain i turned on my hazard lights&my dome lights to help other cars see me so they didn't hit me. i almost got hit several times finally got help pushing off the road and waited for a tow truck for over an hour started the car and it ran so i took the chance with my father there behind me&made it to the repair shop. it was the cam sensor which was another 100$. this past week i went to start my car it wouldn't. *tr

While driving heard bang and car lost power and began to tap. immediately pulled over and shut car down. upon inspection found motor was full of anti-freeze. water pump shaft bearings broke into "pieces" flooding engine with anti-freeze. installed new water pump and timing chain, but too much damage was already done. car repair costs too much to fix, have been advised by mechanics that problems will persist with this 2.7 motor. additionally, air conditioning fails repeatedly. power window unit fails repeatedly. front end problems. we tried to have the problem fixed, but apparently there is no "fix" for this engine. *tr

2000 dodge intrepid, 2.7l engine. 163,000 miles. last month: heater suddenly stops working except at highway speeds. on two occasions: exited highway, engine temp gauge maxes out, turned off heater, dial immediately returns to nominal temp. this month: heater stops working entirely. last night: car would not start -- battery cranking but engine did not catch until i gave it some gas. drove it to mechanic with engine light on. mechanic called to confirm sludge build up in the engine. another case of http://www.oilsludge.com/. *tr

My car died on january 23rd for good while i was driving it. the day before i was driving home from college and i was only going about 40 miles per hour when my car just died. for no reason at all. i was able to start it back up and make it home. the following day my boyfriend, me and our son were on our way back home from my mothers house we turned into cvs and the car died!!!!! it started back up and we made it out of the way of the other cars behind us. when it restarted this time it was an awful noise coming from the engine. we parked it and i called my step-dad and he said to try and get it home and he would look at it the next day. we got the car home and he came to look at it and said he hasn't ever seen sludged up oil like that in his life!!! he tried to start it a few times and it wouldn't. so now i have this car sitting in my driveway undrivable!!!!! =i have two children, one in school and one not. i'm in college and this is our only vehicle!!!!!!!!!! now what do i do????????? i'm not made of money and i have no way to buy a new engine!! please find some way to help me. *tr

2000 dodge intrepid engine failure while driving. loss of power steering and brakes. the engine started knocking and quit running. cost to replace the engine is $2200.00 for used engine which does not include labor. automobile is parked at home. this vehicle was also taken to dealer who also stated cost for new engine and labor would be $5000.00. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2000 dodge intrepid. the contact stated that the vehicle stalls without warning. the vehicle was towed to a dealer and they replaced the ecm. immediately after the repair, the failure resurfaced. she had the vehicle re-inspected and it was found that the cam sensor needed to be replaced at the cost of $429. the component was replaced. the failure and current mileages were 156,000.

Tl*the contact owns a 2000 dodge intrepid. when the contact started the vehicle, he heard a loud banging and knocking noise coming from the engine. the vehicle was towed to a local dealer and they determined that the vehicle was experiencing internal failure. no repairs were performed. the contact is in the process of notifying the manufacturer. the vin is currently unavailable. the failure and current mileages were 94,000.

I own a 2000 dodge intrepid. earlier this year it just failed, engine seized. come to find out there is a problem with the 2.7l engine seizing because of oil sludge. i was directed by a web site to file a complaint here because you were very interested in this specific item. *tr

My 2000 dodge intrepid wouldn't start without a jump for a few days in a row, so i brought it in and had it checked. the mechanic said he thought it was due to build up on the negative terminal. i also heard a noise in the engine, but all belts were checked and they were fine. 1 week later my car just died while i was driving to work. i have now learned that i need to replace the engine at a large cost. while researching the cost of this repair, i have come to learn that this is a very common problem for the 2.7l v6 engine, and that the maker is aware of the problem, but because there have not been enough complaints, it is not worthy of addressing! i am disgusted! the way that my car died, on the road, i could have caused a major accident. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2000 dodge intrepid. while driving 50 mph, the vehicle began making a clicking noise. the vehicle began to slow down on its own and then shut off and failed to restart. the vehicle was towed to a repair shop and the mechanic stated that the timing chain failed due to oil sludge build-up. the contact was informed that a new motor would be needed. the chrysler manufacturer stated that a recall would have been issued if there were issues with the motors in the vehicles. the failure mileage was 65,000. updated 04-24-09 *bf updated 04/27/09.*jb

Our 2000 dodge intrepid with the 2.7 l engine was purchased with a rebuilt engine and 122k miles. we were meticulous about maintaining this car, and had the oil changed every 3000 miles. at 135k miles, the timing chain broke without warning. this should not have happened on a well-maintained vehicle. the cost to repair it will be at least $2000. my son uses this car as his primary vehicle and doesn't have the money to repair it, so he is without a vehicle. this is a common problem with this engine. i feel that dodge should recall and replace the 2.7 engine with a 3.2 or 3.5. *tr

I bought this 2000 dodge intrepid, v-6, 2.7 liter engine, new from a dealer in december, 1999. in 2003, with less than 40,000 miles on it, the engine seized up. the dealer contacted chrysler, and the engine was replaced as if it had been under extended warranty. interestingly, the dealership found no indication of excessive sludge buildup, which apparently is the basis of most complaints about this engine. i paid about $200, and was satisfied at that point. since then, i've had lots of (relatively minor) repairs done on this car, and i would rate it below average for reliability. the car now has about 81,000 miles on it, which means the current engine has about 41,000 miles. the engine has failed again. the only warning was an intermittent (not consistent) clicking sound, which my mechanic felt was coming from the housing over the front part of the engine (where the timing gear/belt is located). thus far, chrysler has not responded to my request for coverage as if it were under warranty. i have reviewed many of the on-line complaints about the 2.7 liter engine; i have talked to at least three local (non-dealership) mechanics, each of whom was familiar with sudden catastrophic failures of the 2.7 engine, and one of whom said he personally knew of seven such failures in this local area. none of those independent mechanics would touch this repair job. this is probably an $8,000 repair job, if i choose to have it repaired. it makes no economic sense, when the trade-in value of the car is less than $2,000. even if i replace the engine (again) i would not sell this car to another individual without describing the problems with the engine. i've read enough, and heard enough, to believe that chrysler should be forced to initiate some sort of replacement and compensation program, at least for those of us who bought our vehicle new, have owned it continuously, have maintained it properly, have not abused it in any way, but can't afford to prosecute a lawsuit. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2000 dodge intrepid. on november 11, 2008, the contact drove the vehicle approximately seven miles when it began to overheat. suddenly, the engine shut off and the vehicle was towed to the repair shop. the mechanic stated that the engine needed to be replaced. a report was filed with the manufacturer and they stated that the vehicle needed to be towed to a chrysler dealer for a diagnosis; however, they did not guarantee assistance with the repair. the current and failure mileages were 125,000.

I have the same old dodge 2.7l engine complaint. my 2000 dodge intrepid with only 90k miles started making noise, than boom... the end of another 2.7l motor. found it was combo of sludge and timing chain. our local junk yards won't even take the car because they have to many as it is!!! so i get to stare at my expensive lawn ornament from my door every day. *tr

Engine died while driving. would not restart. repair shop would not touch it. showed me the oil on the dipstick, a milky brown color. will have to put a remanufactured engine in the vehicle. approx. 92,000 miles on vehicle when this occurred. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2000 dodge intrepid. while driving approximately 25 mph on normal road conditions, the engine failed without warning. roadside assistance was called to the scene and the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic. the mechanic stated that the failure was related to an engine lock-up. currently, the vehicle is inoperable and has not been repaired. the contact was concerned of the safety risk involved. the failure and current mileages were 128,000.

Multiple low-speed stalls/engine shutdown; sometimes engine light or oil light precede the stall. unable to restart vehicle for several minutes. this vehicle has be given all regular routine service, oil changes, etc., by dodge/chrysler dealership where vehicle was purchased new. currently only 55, 450 miles on vehicle. problems began occurring within last year. dealer unable to identify any trouble codes after evaluation of stall complaints. dealership not forthcoming with any problems with this vehicle with 2.7l engine, although many complaints have been found on internet sites including nhtsa website. apparently there exists a manufacturing defect chrysler corp does not want to acknowledge, as it is pervasive for this model. *tr

I have been getting my oil changed regularly since i both the car in 2007. when i bought the car it only had about 65000 miles. now in 2008 it has a little over 85000. i was driving one day and all of a sudden my car started making a knocking noise. within a couple of miles of the noise started my car completely broke down in the middle of the street. there i was in the middle of the street not able to go anywhere. luckily a cop came by who called a tow truck. after towing the car to the auto repair shop, i was told that my engine needed to be replaced due to oil sludge. i am very disappointed in this. i have low miles, proper maintenance to the car, and now i need a new engine. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2000 dodge intrepid. while the contact's daughter was driving at an unknown speed, the vehicle began to smoke and make a grinding noise. she drove the vehicle back home. a mechanic stated that the engine failed. the failure mileage was 128,000.

This is a basic vehicle complaint that i feel dodge/chrysler should be made to fix on their 2.7l engines. i and after searching the internet have found that many people are having the same problem with this problem with their 2000 dodge intrepid and the company is doing nothing to help fix it when it is a known issue with the engine. other mechanics have said the same thing. i think that some authority should look into this and have them recall this engine. people pay a lot of money for their vehicles and need them to work. *tr

I was driving home, on the interstate, and my engine's timing chain broke. took it to a mechanic, he said that it will require replacement of entire engine, that this failure is very common in these engines. he referred me to this website. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2000 dodge intrepid. while driving 65 mph, the vehicle completely shut down in the middle of traffic. the mechanic stated that the failure was caused by engine sludge. the manufacturer stated that they could not assist due to improper maintenance of the vehicle. the failure mileage was 131,340.

I took my 2000 intrepid to the car shop because my engine light kept coming on. they couldn't find anything and they could not find anything wrong. my oil was fine. then a month later my oil light came on again and the engine started making a knocking noise. i then learned that my engine had completely failed even after only 75,000 miles on it. *tr

Driving at 60 mph. vehicle engine failure due to insufficient lubrication. (working on) replacing damaged parts and or engine. *tr

I had a dodge intrepid that has had nothing but problems with the engine. when i went online to do research i found out that there were many other complaints, the same as i had. i want to know why no-one has done anything in regards to this problem. i actually had a part person at fireside dodge in modesto tell me that a part i was buying was a known defect part and that is why they changed it but they weren't putting out a notice until they were forced to because it was expensive, i put the latest incident as the date but this is the third tragic incident with this engine. the first incident was when i had to have all my rods replaced in the engine because of a sludge build-up in the engine. the second incident was when a part connected to my radiator blew off and i had to replace that. now, this third incident and i still not have a diagnosis on what is wrong but it is leaning to the heads, head gasket, and piston rings. please look at these website and start an investigation into dodge about this engine. it is not fair that honest, hard working people have to deal with faulty engineering. i am lucky that no one has been hurt on any time my car has broken down because all three times i was on a major freeway, once coming home from stockton on highway 99 the other two happened when i was over 2 hours from home and i had to pay a $575.00 tow truck fee each time to get my car home. www.dodgechryslerengineproblems.com www.carcomplaints.com/dodge/intrepid/2002/engine www.oilsludge.com dodgestories.blogspot.com *tr
