Recently reported POWER TRAIN problems on 2010 Dodge Grand Caravan

There have been several issues with this vehicle all happening within several months. we first had issues with the tire tread, then a hole in the water hose and radiator, a hole in the exhaust manifold. then it was broken pieces in the catalytic converter. now the current issue is either the brakes seized up or the the caliber is stuck and we are currently unable to drive the vehicle.

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 dodge grand caravan. while driving 20-60 mph, the vehicle shut down, and lost power steering and power braking ability. there was no warning indicator illuminated. the vehicle was pulled over and restarted. the vehicle was taken to don miller dodge chrysler jeep (5802 odana rd, madison, wi 53719-1212, 608-270-5000) where a diagnostic test was recommended. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the failure recurred ten times. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated that there was no recall. the failure mileage was approximately 105,000. consumer took vehicle to a local autozone for a computer check. consumer was told that the problem would not show up because the check engine light was not on. consumer says that issue is similar to manufacturer recall lo2 (win module). *dl

While driving at 35-40mph on a rural zone the steering wheel suddenly felt 'locked' and was extremely difficult to steer. at the same time the brakes were hard to press and the traction control dash light came on. my wife was driving and frightened her very much. the road has a slight curve in it and has oncoming traffic in the opposite lane. she had to forcibly steer the van as best she could against the sidewalk curb to help slow down the van. if she had made it to the freeway when this happened i don't think the results would be the same as far as her safety. i looked up the symptoms and found it to be a common problem and that even a recall might be in place for this issue. please forward me any info that will help me correct this problem.

The 2010 dodge grand caravan left hand side wiring loom wears on an aluminum obtrusion beneath where it lies. this causes the wire's shielding to be worn off and causes shorting. the engine will die when the wire contacts metal or each other during travel. this problem will cause the engine to die at road speeds leaving the vehicle without steering, brakes, and other safety related equipment. i believe this to be common and undetected because the wear point is on the underside of the wiring loom near the engine. the harness is hard to lift and inspect because of the location and lack of slack at the point of the obtrusion. vibration causes the short, the vehicle will normally start after coming to a stop when there is no friction between the worn wires. i believe this should be reviewed and analyzed for a recall because of the safety issue involved as others have stated but are unaware of the cause. i have added additional wrapping to limp my vehicle home during a three hour trip. additionally, this form would not let me select steering, brakes, or other safety features when i selected electrical, which is specifically what causes the safety issues. *js

Car dies while driving will not start some times

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 dodge grand caravan. the contact stated that when the vehicle was stopped and turned off, the key fob could not be pulled out. also, the shifter did not click and caused the vehicle to roll forward. there was no warning. the vehicle was taken to the morlan chrysler dealer (573- 388-3331, 374 siemers dr, cape girardeau, mo 63701) where the technician was unable to duplicate the failure. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 9,999.

Often after starting the vehicle and in drive it will automatically shut off. i have to put in neutral and turn ignition over again to make it drive again. this happens at stop lights, city streets and expressways. the radio and air will still work but i'm just coasting with no power steering.

'takata recall' when driving at speeds of 55-60 . then applying the brake quickly to stop the transmission jumps forward at times. also on occasions the when driving the vehicle for a hour or so , if you apply the brake when at a light or stop sign the vehicles r.p.m will idle at 2-2.5 as opposed to 1-1.5 . feeling as though it's lungin you forward.. i have a warranty on this vehicle which is up on 2-26-18 . this vehicle only has 83,000 miles on it . hopefully this time they fix the issue. i have owned two other dodge vans and they all have had the same issue. but due to the fact , there are no check engine lights on they never catch the issue. so it's not until my warranty runs out and i have to pay out of pocket that they find the issue. im frustrated due to the fact , after you ad the cost of ownership and the place that sold you the car , says they can't duplicate problem. sounds like they don't want to eat the cost of the repair. also sounds like once you sign on the dotted line , they could care less what happens!just venting ....

While driving the vehicle just stalls out of no where and is very dangerous. almost wrecked 3 times during the stall period because power steering and engine did not respond.

I bought a 2010 dodge grand caravan about 3 years ago and within the last 4 months the van has been making a loud high pitched squeal when switching from 1st to 2nd gear. the van has under 70,000 miles and 3 different repair shops said it was the transmission. anywhere from 2500-3000 to fix. they also said it was not worth fixing because it's just going to continue to have transmission issues. i still owe over 7,000 on it. it's completely unfair that the transmissions are not being covered by the dealerships. so now i have to get another vehicle and start all over again.

This problem has happened numerous times and continues to do so. when the van is running and in park it will not shift out of park unless i play with the key (jostle it around) the shift lever then is very hard to shift (as if it is half engaged). when the van is off i try to start the car but it doesn't start unless i remove the key and put it back in numerous times. the key has come out while it was running and i could not turn the car off until i put it back in the ignition and played with it for a few minutes. from the forums i have read this sounds exactly like what is happening with the recalled ignition parts but my vin number doesn't seem to be on that recall list? there is no key-chain on the keys and never had any.

The vehicle has unexpectedly shut off (i.e. gone dead) 30-40 times in the past 9 months. i previously took the vehicle to dodge dealership and they did not find any problem with the ignition. there were no error codes in the vehicle computer. dearlership suggested removing all extra keys/key rings...so did so. when it shuts off, the engine stops running, loss of power steering, loss of power brakes, and im guessing the air bags. although the van predominantly shuts off at low speeds (10-15 mph) shortly after starting the car, it now occurs more frequently at highway speeds (60 mph) and after the car has been running for 2 hours. the shut down has got to be electronic as the engine does not sputter (the engine and all electronics go dead). also we use only the key in the ignition (no key ring or extra key weight) and the key does not move out of the on position. this rolling death trap needs to be recalled and repaired immediately.

Car stalls while i am driving it. took it to car dealer and it doesn't pop up with codes, so they say they can't figure out what is wrong. head over mechanics drove it and he was driving it at 30 miles an hour and it turned off and he said he almost wrecked my car. mechanic also duplicated it, but no codes, so they are saying they don't know what to fix. it is the only transportation i have, but is very dangerous to drive as when it stalls i have no power steering or brakes. i am at my wits end, because i have tried to reach chrysler itself and all i get is customer service and they have a case open, but getting no results. i also have clunking in my transmission, but again no codes. i am at my wits end and don't know where to go from here. i can't afford to keep putting money in this car and it not get fixed. i still owe 5 years on this car also. i have had people riding in the car with me when it has happened. i am going to put a date at this end here, but not sure of when it first started happening, but know that the transmission started happening last year and told them about it and they said that was natural for that type of engine, but they hadn't even drove it.

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 dodge grand caravan. the contact stated that after starting the engine, the vehicle would hesitate to accelerate. after approximately fifteen minutes of driving, the failure recurred. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 54,000.

I was driving slowly, making a turn, and the power steering stopped working, then the braking stopped, and the car had no power. the stability control light came on. this has happened intermittently multiple times, and the dealership cannot get the car to repeat the error. it did have one key fob error on the codes, but that was many starts in the past. other vin's in this model/year have been recalled due to electrical/ignition problems. this is probably what is wrong with this car, but it is not under recall, and the dealership cannot figure out how to fix it. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 dodge grand caravan. while driving approximately 55 mph, unknown warning indicators illuminated and the gear shift would not move. the contact stated that this was a recurring failure. the vehicle was driven to a dealer, but was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 131,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 dodge grand caravan. while driving 65 mph, the vehicle would shift into a lower gear causing the speed to decrease without warning. the failure recurred numerous times. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic; however, the failure was not diagnosed. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 40,000. updated 03/30/15*lj the consumer stated the dealer rebuilt the transmission at the manufacturer's expense. updated 6/23/2015*js

After put the gearshift on park position, and turn off the engine, the key fob will stuck on acc position and can not come out. need to restart the engine and switch the gearshift to other positions and push back to park position one or more times, then it may come out. the key stuck issue happened about 3 out of 10 from a month ago. *tr

I live in troy michigan and on a trip to go pick up my teenage daughter driving.on m-59 my car started expelling coolant in the form.of steam from underneath the hood and inside the vehicle. i immediate stopped at the closest automotive store.less.than a mile from where it started the incident. it was discovered by the mechanic at bell tire that the steel intercooler lines that run to the interior heater had ruptured. i contacted chrysler as steel tube should not fail unless some manufacture issue was overlooked. as a senior systems engineer mean time before failure on a component like this should have never happened at the low mileage on the vehicle. i followed up to find.out cost to repair and the sales rep also let me know that a second grand caravan 2008 model had just come.in with the same failure. this is absolutely chrysler failure to engineer this correctly and i would.lile to see this resolved before greater damage is done. *js

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 dodge grand caravan. the contact stated that the transmission failed to shift properly when the vehicle was turned on or off. the contact received notification of nhtsa campaign number: 14v373000 (air bags, electrical system); however, the part needed to do the repair was unavailable. the contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. the manufacturer was made aware of the issue. the approximate failure mileage was 73,800.

While driving the ignition switch turned off and resulted in a loss of power steering and brakes. vehicle was in heavy traffic and almost caused a multiple car pileup. this has been happening for months. dodge charged me $89 to diagnose and the result was the dealer told me to get an oil change and my radiator cap might be leaking. i contacted dodge corporate escalating to a manager with no results. my wife and kids could have been killed. i was forced to trade to vehicle which costs me lots of money loss. dodge did not care and either did the dealer. there are no other keys on the key ring to interfere. *tr

Transmission feels like it is going to come out of the front end of my car. it makes the car move forward when it does it. notified dealer and they tried it, it did not do it for them, so they say they can not fix it. tried it once. under warranty, but no codes again.

Vehicle intermittently shuts off while driving resulting in the loss of hydraulic systems (power steering, brakes, etc.) once restarted the vehicle will perform within normal specifications. no code is generated by the on-board computer regarding the malfunction. *js

Purchased dodge grand caravan (modified for handicapped accessibility) in september of 2011 with approx. 10,000 miles. several months after purchase the vehicle developed a potentially catastrophic fault. while accelerating onto an expressway the vehicle spontaneously accelerates to over 8000 rpms. the brakes are not sufficient to control the vehicle's speed. in order to correct the fault the driver must turn off the ignition key then shift the vehicle into neutral and drift to the side of the road. in order to reset the vehicle power train to safe operating conditions, the driver must start the vehicle with the ignition key. if the fault is sustained the driver must turn off the key before the engine over accelerates. this process must be repeated as often as necessary (several times) in order to cause the system to reset and allow for normal operation. this is not an easily repeatable fault. we have left the vehicle with the local dodge dealer for almost two weeks and the mechanics drive the vehicle to / from work (200+ miles) to try to repeat this fault. they are having little success observing this powertrain fault. chrysler case id [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

Was entering a parking place. right foot on top of brake. while my car was moving at idol speed-the engine rpm's speed surges causing no control in steering, brake . the surgeing over rides the brake. steering, everything.. hit parked car. you have no control in situation. had another "2010" van & same thing happened going thru garage door -2nd time almost hit building at my dentist building. dealership made deal & switched to present van. now this one has done it. chrysler has inspected van for two weeks. they found nothing wrong . case number at chrysler is #23859956. can't drive this van again. next time may injure or kill someone. found many with same trouble on internet. how do we get chrysler to notice before someone is badly hurt. they are waiting for me to pick up my van?????. don't know if i can do it. also have to fix bumper for $800.00 . *tr

The distance was about 35 miles from our home, bout 45 minutes drive. driver didn't notice anything wrong with the engine or see any warning lights. the car was swaying like on a windy day, another car honked at us, then we heard loud road noise. we pulled over and turned off the engine. saw the rear passenger tire was flat to the rim. noticed a smoky smell. saw little puffs of white smoke coming from under the hood. to be safe we removed children from the car; two 4 yr old children were in the backseat buckled in their car-seats. infant was in the middle drivers side seat buckled in his car seat. driver and car owner were in the front. keys were removed from the ignition. we walked away from the vehicle, waited at the fence-line away from the vehicle while calling for a tow. smoke appeared to have stopped for about 5 minutes. suddenly black smoke started pouring out of the engine, embers dropping to the road from under the front of the car. we moved the children further away from the vehicle. several truckers pulled over and brought fire extinguishers. one opened the hood flames flared up the fire truck arrived after the fire had been extinguished. one said the fire appeared to have started in the fan. the chp officer said the firefighters would disconnect the battery. when we looked at the inside of the front of the car everything was burnt and melted, the hood was buckled, front grill melted. the fire was extinguished before the rest of the car was damaged. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 dodge grand caravan. the contact stated that the vehicle cut off while driving at 70 mph. the contact was able to coast the vehicle onto the shoulder where it was restarted. the vehicle was able to be driven to a private mechanic where it was found that win module had failed. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer informed the contact that the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign id number: 11v139000 (electrical system: ignition). the failure and the current mileage was 67,477. updated 2/19/13 updated 02/25/13 updated 02/28/13 updated 04/18/2017 *js the consumer stated after the vehicle was purchased, it began to have mechanical problems. the dashboard lights to be serviced would turn on and off. the van occasionally cut off but would start up with the turn of the key. the light indicators were malfunction indicator light. electronic stability light, and the electronic throttle control. the win module, battery, starter, and oxygen sensors were repaired by the owner. the consumer requested to be advised on what to do next. updated 06/19/2017*js

The car shifts hard. when first started in the morning it ruins up high prm's before the car shifts. the car transmission sometimes fails to engage when i attempt to pass a car on the highway or when i just want to speed up. this can happen when i am going 30 mph or 60 mph. it happens at random times. recently the electrical system has started acting up. last week when i went into the grocery store the window went down by themselves while i was in the store.(it was raining out so i am sure the windows were up when i locked the doors to go inside) the driver's side door does not lock or unlock with the remote control. also when i go to exit the car the lock is sticking and it is at times difficult to open the door. today when my wife went out to the van the car had unlocked and the front lights were on. i re-locked the car and it unlocked itself again. i have had the car into the dealership where i purchased numerous times(5 or 6) to have the transmission looked at but they don't get an"error code" so they say there is nothing that can be done. *tr

I bought my grand caravan brand new. it is a 2010, i bought in 2011. i have had multiple issues with it. over the weekend, the traction control came on (perfectly dry roads), the car stalled, i lost power steering, and it wouldn't move until i stopped, put the car in park, and restarted it. this has happened four times now. i took it in for service this morning. i was told they would run diagnostics. if the diagnostics showed it to be a powertrain issue, it would be covered. if not, i would have to pay for diagnostics. after they ran diagnostics, they think it is the pcm. however, they won't fix it because they can't prove it is nothing else or duplicate the problem. they also still charged me for the diagnostics because they can't say for 100% it is the pcm. they told me i would have to continue to drive the car until it happened regularly and i would probably wreck the car in the process. i told them to expect a lawsuit if that happens. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 dodge grand caravan. while attempting to turn the vehicle off, the key became lodged in between the start and on position. the failure recurred on numerous occasions. the vehicle was taken to a dealer who diagnosed that the gear shifter needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the vin was included in nhtsa campaign number: 14v373000 (electrical system, air bags); however, the part needed to repair the vehicle was unavailable. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was unknown.

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 dodge grand caravan. the contact stated that when driving at any speed, the vehicle would lose power sporadically. there were several warning lights illuminated after the vehicle failed to operate. the vehicle was taken to the dealer who stated that the failure was the central computer. the manufacturer was notified of the failure who lodged a complaint for the contact. the failure and the current mileage was 44,000.

Shifter knob fell off while parking. there has been other issues. when i start the car if will turn off by it self. we bought the car june 2011 and 3 months later at 40k miles the rotors started going out. i've research these issues and they so sp common that it is extremely uncomfortable even owning it. *tr

Bought vehicle used from a dodge dealership in 2012, after several months engine shut off while driving on highway and then spontaneously restarted. this happened maybe once a month but then became more frequent until it is now almost a daily occurrence. when this occurs sometimes car will restart if you slightly turn the key towards start quick enough, otherwise you have to shift into neutral to have some control and then turn the key to restart (not fun or safe in traffic at highway speeds). this can happen while sitting in the driveway before moving or at any speed, bumpy roads especially bad. once we realized what the problem was with the ignition switch/key i did some research and found the recall 11v-139 and determined that our van was built during the recall manufacture dates. called dodge 3 times, first two calls was told recall did not exist. on the 3rd call was told it did exist but my vin was not included in recall. i asked to at least have the ignition scanned with the witech scan tool (as described in the instructions in the l25 recall notice sent to dealers) dealer to determine if it was a marquardt, siemens or continental win module. i was told i could do this at my expense but even if the results showed it was a recalled ignition it would not be covered since my vin was not in the recall. this situation is extremely dangerous and if it has not caused any deaths yet as with the current gm ignition problem it will. something needs to be done. p.s. vehicle also has the transmission bearing noise problem and the leaky/noisy power steering problems that dodge has described in service bulletins but has also not recalled. *tr

While stopped and then try to drive forward or reverse, there would be a pause and then suddenly jerk forward/reverse and then be okay. the last time before i had it serviced, (under warranty), i was able to drive forward but reverse would only last a few seconds before it wouldn't work. you press on the gas but it wouldn't move. if you put into forward and then reverse it sometimes let you reverse further but only a foot at a time. new 2010 grand caravan with 5100 [xxx] is getting the transmission replaced. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

Vehicle stalled while reversing out of a parking space. moments later, while vehicle was in park and running, vehicle began to drift backwards and hit another vehicle. *tr

When speed control is on and active at highway speed, when going down a hill the transmission will downshift 3rd gear level very hard and the engine will go into a high rpm rev. turned off speed control or stepping on the brakes this condition continued for 30 seconds. took car to dealership, there was no check engine light or error codes in the computer or any factory recall on this condition. this problem happened multiple times. dealership has to get in touch with factory to get help with this problem. can't use speed control where hills are involved, or not at all. this option or function is bad! the consumer was told not to use the speed control and to shut it off when traveling down hill. but, it was ok to use up hills or on level roads. the vehicle could shut off when the engine revving is too high, but it was not a safety issue. having no power brakes or steering was definitely a safety issue. chrysler informed the consumer they were going to look into possible software updates or a mechanical fix to correct the problem. they did not feel it would be a quick fix, so the consumer would have to live with the defect. updated 07/13/10 *tr

2010 dodge grand caravan shuts off when turned on and put into reverse or drive does not happen all the time also has done it while at low speed pulling into parking space. *tr

Cruise control active on our 2010 grand caravan. when going down long hill, transmission will down shift on own-3 gear levels-hard & rpm as observed on tac approached 5000. had to disengage cruise. dealer had no error code. contacted chrysler. this was a problem on 2009's. supposedly fixed for 2010. chrysler is aware and working on fix. this occurred on two occasions at 3200 and 3740 miles. when taken to dodge service dept., i was instructed to not use cruise on hills of this type in the future. some answer. *tr
