We have classified the 42 complaints from 2008 Dodge Grand Caravan about EXTERIOR LIGHTING into the following categories.
Headlight won't come on i replaced the light bulbs replaced the light switch
Vehicle stalled intermittently going down road, dash lights flicker on and off, windshield wipers turn on intermittently, radio not owrking, windows not working, locks not working, all dash lights now not on, gas gage not working, rpm not working. vehicle is currently not driveable.
While parked in driveway, the horn started blowing erratically, headlights were on, and front and rear windshield wipers and washers operating. door locks would not respond to remote. after s short period of trying to unlock the doors with the remote, they either responded to the remote or unlocked by themselves. at that point i attempted to turn the ignition on and start the vehicle. i started it and then turned it off but that did not stop the horn, wipers, etc. a few seconds after shutting the ignition off, everything stopped. front and rear wipers did not return to park position until i manually turned them on and off. i started the engine again and had a check engine light with error codes related to the tcm, transmission control module. in addition, while driving, the heater blower motor intermittently stops working. all of this appears to be the result of a faulty tipm, totally integrated power module. this has happened twice in the last two weeks. first occurrence was 1/11/18 and second occurrence was 1/16/18. searching online revealed that mine is not an isolated problem as there are many reported instances of tipm failures with similar symptoms.
All the code light flashing on the dashboard, wiper automatically come on, speedometer cuts down to 0 when driving, driver side windows wouldn't roll down or the lock switch wouldn't unlock doors, lights flicker on and off while they are shut off, if lights on can't use bright light they cut out when all the code light flicker on. like it shorting out. it does this sitting still or in motion. happens when i am driving or sitting in a parking lot
Have had my 08 van for a few years and everyone in awhile the alarm will sound wipers won't stop going. has happened while driving car stalls looses ability to steer and light go off which at night make it really hard to see. my alarm and all other action combined happened at work while i was inside tried to turn off with fob had to unhook battery still didn't stop. i have 4 kids and this is what i have to drive them in we have went into a ditch and got stuck in a 4 way took to mechanic no codes no problem only this was. was told by dealer the could not diagnose it unless it did it to them i am at a lose i have to drive to get to work my kids have to ride to go to sitter i am so afraid we are gonna die in this van.
Driving down freeway and van stalled. coasted to road side. wipers go crazy when car is parked and drain all the cleaning fluid out. have not been able to clean windshield of excess dirt to see more clearly. car has gone crazy. everything electrical goes berserk randomly. never know what may or may not work.
Can turn on headlights, then one goes out, blink off and on then go off completely or don't come on at all when turned on. happens when stationary or in motion. switch is good. headlights replaced. have been told by the mechanic that i have to replace the defective tipm (totally integrated power module) that tested bad. have read multiple reports of the same issue. this is definitely a safety issue when driving!
Headlamp lighting will go out at high rates of speed and or not properly operate at all.
The instrument panel randomly lights up with all warning lights and chimes going off simultaneously, the windshield wipers activating and headlights flashing. stopping the car, turning it off and on doesn't reset the problem, but it randomly goes away and doesn't happen again for two weeks or a month. it happens when the vehicle is stopped or in motion, while the vehicle is running. i see an open nhtsa investigation matching this on my vehicle, for a tipmodule
Head lights fail when driving at night, no high or low beams. failed on rural secondary street . had lights next day (no repair done). failed again two days latter on major secondary street. had lights next day (again no repair) . the lights fail intermittently and non-predictable. dealer does not know cause of failure since the problem resolves itself before they see the vehicle.
The front and back wipers came on. the back wiper fluid was squirting. the horn came on and stayed on. the interior and exterior lights turned on. all of this occurred while the vehicle was parked in the driveway. the engine had been off for 10 minutes. the battery had to be jumped because it was drained too much.
For a few days my van has been having issues starting.(not battery) every light on the dash bored has been popping on. then all the dash lights go out and so do the head lights. we were driving at night. parked the car for a minute and let it run. it shifted out of park into drive and drove up a little knoll and into a parked car.no one was in or around the van. my bumper was damaged. luckily no one was hurt. i am a mother of 4 young children. this is a very dangerous situation. today it rain a bit but prior to today it was not raining. when in parked, lights and wipers were in the off position but they continued to stay on. at a very fast rate it would idle up and down quickly. we refuse to even turn on the van for i am scared of what may happen.
My van has started having problems changing gears between the speeds of 30-60 mph. this most frequently occurs around the speeds of 40-50 mph, but have, however, occurred at all speeds within the 30-60 mph range. the van also often accelerates slowly after coming to a full stop. during both given instances, it will be sluggish and sounds like it needs to shift gears yet does not do so. this process also greatly depletes my gas as the transmission isn't shifting properly. i have inquired about a recall on this issue but have found that there aren't any. i, however, have found many complaints online from other owners with this same issue. the date i will provide below is approximately when this started occurring, but does not imply that this situation only occurred once as it continues still.
We were driving down the i5 in california when the all the warning lights on the instrument cluster lit up or started flashing. the indicators, wipers and windshield wiper fluid started and would not shut off. i could not turn any of these items off. this lasted for about 1-2 minutes before the van all of a sudden went back to its normal operation. it has happened one other time since then.
Refer to date investigation opened: sep 25, 2014 date investigation closed: open nhtsa action number: dp14004 component(s): electrical system my wife noticed it first and i have noticed this. it started when not moving but now continues while driving. the windshield wipers wipe even though they are off, the air bag light and total dash lights, we can't tell how fast we are going because of the gauge failure and the headlights blink among other electrical problems. this is not a good situation with 4 kids in the vehicle.
(i do have the 2nd incident recorded on my daughters cell phone. however, turning off of sr795 onto main street coming home from work - my wipers began to work on their own, as well as the message light center - all started blinking rapidly, and my seat belt sound was continuously beeping. then last week as we were going on the expressway (280-75-475) my speedometer would jump from 60 down to 0 back up - continuously, while my wipers were going, all the message indicator lights were blinking, as well as my window would not (still don't) work nor can i lock/unlock my van from the drivers side. the incident on the expressway, incident #2 - is the one i have recorded. i phoned grogantown chrysler - and was informed they were never sent the l25 part that is recalled. my complaint is this: if my van is a 2008, the original recall was in 2011, how can a dealer put the van back on the lot for sale if the recall has not been addressed or fixed. insane - and an inconvenience - i was told i could drive it til rouen (which is closer to me) can do a diagnostic test on may 26th. what happens if it is indeed the l25 recall and myself or my kids are injured in an accident cuz chrysler corporation has not made this part available. *tr
The vehicle's engine suddenly stop functioning, causing the vehicle stops and turned off itself. also the electrics malfunction made dash lights and signs turned on. this vehicle being inspected by authorized in la ca and advised me that this recall can not be completed due to the chrysler unable to supply the relevant parts. this vehicle being used for terminal ill patients and requires urgent repairs of this vehicle. please advise urgently your decision. kind regards *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2008 dodge grand caravan. when starting the vehicle, the key would not remain in the start position and returned out of position. in addition, the signal lights failed to illuminate. the contact received notification of nhtsa campaign number: 11v139000 (electrical system) however, the part to do the repair was unavailable. the contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 36,000.
Vehicles instrument gauges failed, odometer, compass, and warning lights will not operate. windshield wiper runs constantly while key is in the on position or motor is running. headlights stay on, however brights do not illuminate and blinkers do not operate. all other systems are functional. *tr
My airbag light has been on for over a year. i recently had it checked out at tire kingdom where they checked it and told me that the diagnostics are coming back that it is not an air bag issue, but rather a seat belt issue. when i inquired about this at a local dodge dealer, i was told it would be a $110 charge just to check it. i am concerned that this light being on could indicate that there is a larger problem that could result in my airbags not deploying properly in the case of an accident. i should not have to pay to find out that this is a manufacturing issue or a part malfunction. i hope that others are reporting the same issue so that we can get help for this problem with a recall.
The first time it happened was about november 2 and then again on november 23. one the first occurrence i went to open my door and the horn and wipers and wiper fluid started going off. i jump in my ride with the keys in my hand and the van locked me in i was unable to get out and fluid was going all over my garage. finally the van let me out and we had to pull the battery to get it to stop. it had to sit all day before it would not do those things. then yesterday i went to walmart and heard an announcement that a vehicle was going crazy in the parking lot. of course it was mine, i once again had to pull the battery to get it to stop. after a few hours we just pulled all the fuses so that we could get it home. also for many years now the traction control and brake lights come on in the winter and it starts very funny in the winter. i have read online that this is happening to many many people and it is happening as it is going down the road. i am at this point afraid to drive my van so i am not sure what to do i owe money on this thing. i have taken it to the dealer many times and there are no codes coming up so they said it would probably be like $1000 just for them to figure out what is wrong. there is pages upon pages of people complaining about this, why has dodge not done a recall are they waiting for someone to get hurt? *tr
Our van was parked outside our house (after being driven 6 miles & sitting for 10 minutes) & i started hearing the horn trying to make a honking sound, went outside & noticed the lights flickering, the wipers going at top speed w/washer fluid spraying, & the horn was trying to honk. i tried pushing the unlock button on my key fob & nothing happened. i was able to unlock the door with the key but entering & opening all the doors did nothing. i tried starting the van & it wouldn't stay on. the horn eventually went on at full force & a solid sound. we had to disconnect the battery for it to stop. *tr
The entire electrical system went haywire. also note this was at night. headlights and brights flashing/flickering. horn blasting. wipers on full speed (front and rear). wiper washers spraying (front and rear) interior lights flashing, dash lights flashing...it was scary! please help us to fix. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2008 dodge grand caravan. the contact stated that the rear third brake light would intermittently fail to illuminate. the vehicle was taken to the dealer. the dealer was unable to diagnose the failure because it was intermittent. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 90,000. updated 09/21/15*lj updated 10/19/2017*cn
We went out to car to get in it, and all doors were locked and would not unlock. horn started blaring. windshield wipers went crazy with windshield wiper fluid spraying. headlights were blinking on and off. finally able to get in car, things finally calmed down after about 10 - 15 minutes. next day, we took it to dealership. they tested it, and they said they did not find anything wrong with it. similar episodes happened after that one which included taking the key out of the ignition, and the car was still running. we took it to a different dealership to have it checked, and they said they could not find anything wrong with it. *tr
This incident has happened 3 other times in the past. the first incident at about 5,000 miles and the second incident at 22,000 and a third incident at about 45,000. this last incident occurred on the highway traveling at about 67 mph. the headlamps turn off and the horn blares constant. the windshield wipers go at full speed (front and back) and the fluid is spraying everywhere. the doorlocks begin to flicker in the open and lock position. the brake lights are also shut off but the reverse lights are lit up. the tachometer and speedometer go to zero. you can maneuver the vehicle to the side of the road and try to shut off the vehicle, but to your surprise the vehicle doesn't shut off. it keeps running! so as you are sitting there wondering what to do and unlock your door manually and then you have to unhook the battery and somehow that works. if you are lucky when you connect the battery back in the system goes back to normal. if your unlucky the horn and windshield wipers are still going strong along with all the other issues. either way this system malfunction is being reported all over the internet and dodge hasn't responded. they are reporting a tipm (total ignition power module) apparently the part is in such demand that you cannot order because they are backordered up to 800 units. *tr
Vehicle intermittently has electrical problems. the problems vary in severity. when problems occur there are various symtoms that include instrument cluster not working, windshield wipers operating without being turned on, headlights become inoperative, heat and ac become inoperative, doors lock and cannot be overridden even manually. when problems occur that can last for a few seconds and multiple times or sometimes a continuous for several minutes. *tr
The first incident occurred while care was sitting in the driveway, no key in it. horn started going wipers and wiper fluid started going full speed, and lights started flashing, door locks engaged and could not be stopped by key fob. this continued for about 10 minutes. i had to pull the fuses and disconnect the battery to get it to stop. took the car to dealership twice who stated there is nothing wrong with the van. the van continues to do this intermittently. most recent incident driving down the highway 60 mph with children in the car when all the previous symptoms started to occur and gauges would drop to zero and then back up over and over again. all lights went out at this time and transmission began malfunctioning. i was barely able to pull the car off to the side of the road where it continued to do this for 15 minutes. the third time i took it in they reported it was my tipm and want over $1100 to replace it. i called dodge customer service and explained the issue hoping they would fix it without cost to me or offer some solution. their rep was very rude and told me to try what the dealership suggested. i expressed how it is a design/manufacturing flaw and got the reply, "well ma'am, there is no recall on this so there is nothing we can do". i informed him i would never buy another dodge/chrysler vehicle and received the reply "ok, have a good day". he then hung up on me. this is a serious safety issue and after reading many forums have realized i am not the only one experiencing this issue...dodge needs to be held accountable! *tr
I was driving home at 10:30 at night on thursday the 15th of november 2012 driving 65 mph on state highway 64 in pawnee county oklahoma and the windshield wipers went on by themselves and then the head lights went off by themselves. i took the vehicle to the dodge dealer and they recommended that i replace a clock spring but weren't even sure if that would fix the headlight issue. not to mention charging me $300 for the part when i have the extended electronics warranty on the vehicle. i feel that this is a very major safety issue and dodge needs to look into it further and correct the issue at no charge to the owners, this is obviously a manufacturer defect. there is no reason this vehicle should have this issue. it is a liability to dodge if not corrected. please look into this issue as it could end up costing someone their life. i would like to make sure that this gets looked into. please send me a supervisors number or email so i make sure this gets attention. if i do not hear something back within 48 hours, i will contact the secretary of transportation myself, a mr. ray lahood through senator coburn. i am really pissed off about the situation. you drive down a road with your family in the dark of night and unexpectedly your headlights go out and you risk your families life. dodge didn't act like it was a big deal, but it could end up being a major liability for them if they do not remedy the situation. *tr
Upon entering vehicle pressing keyfob to unlock any door or hatch the horn would start to sound, the windshield wipers (front and rear) would start to go on its on including windshield wiper fluid as well, lights would start to flash as well. i would have to open up the hood and hit the fuse box located next to the battery on the drivers side firewall just to get it to stop. i have taken the vehicle to the dealership on several ocassions to no avail because they cannot duplicate the problem and now i am out a diagnostic fee of $94.00 x2 and the cost of a rental car both times for my wife and three children because my 100% full warranty does not cover the cost of the rental because the problem could not be duplicated. after searching and reading about this problem that my wife and i are having with this cara van i think something should be done before someone is seriously hurt or killed by the caravan doing something that it was not asked to do!!!! *tr
Intermittent electrical issues - fails to start; interior dash panel lights, driver side passenger door not closing, drivers door not locking - all intermittent
Went to turn my lights on and they turned on then off then on again and then off. and now they will not turn on. everything else works, parking lights, dimmer etc. i had a diagnostic run and it showed the following trouble codes: b162f,b,c ; b1633, b1634, b1637. which all points to the tipm control module. so i called the shop, they called to find the part and there is none available. there are on backorder, about 800 of them to be exact. so that means that i have no headlights until 800 other people get theres. next thing to go is the wipers, horn and then the car to shut off as i'm driving. obviously if 800 of these are on back order there is an issue with them. *tr
After shutting vehicle off the headlights, interior lights, or parking lights will stay on indefinitely, resulting in draining the battery to zero. the only solution is to disconnect the battery for ten minutes. dealer could not diagnose problem. *tr
The headlamps on my van turn themselves off at random times. they will turn off while the van is going down the street, parked in the driveway, anywhere. sometimes they don't turn on at all, instead they just flash several times and then stay off. *tr
Van has ignition problem that causes lights and engine not to start. had many issues with ignition with repairs had re key and turn off the alarm. no luck spent over 4000.00. problem still exist. please help. *tr
On 4 occasions our 2008 dodge grand caravan has gone into a mode where the lights flash, the horn honks, the windshield wipers come on, washer fluid squirts out, and the doors lock. when moving, it also appears to downshift to lower gear. once it starts, it appears the only way to stop it is to let it run its course which can take up to 10 minutes (disconnecting the battery did not make it stop). during the time it is happening the key fob does not work. of the 4 times it has happened, it has happened twice while driving and twice while sitting still (once with key in ignition and once without). i have it at the dealer and so far in 2 days they have not found anything wrong. there are literally hundreds of other people with 2008 dodge grand caravans who have this exact same or similar issue. this is a potentially dangerous issue if you happen to be moving when it happens. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2008 dodge grand caravan. the contact stated that the headlights stopped illuminating while driving at various speeds. the failure occurred on an intermittent basis. the contact also stated that the headlights would not always immediately turn back on. the vehicle was taken to an independent repair shop and was informed that the headlight module needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 90,000. updated 06/29/12 *bf updated 07/09/12
While driving down the road, vehicle will suddenly shutoff and horn will blare and windshield wipers will become active. other times, the lights will flicker and become inoperative at night. most likely to shut off when negotiating a turn. i have taken the vehicle to the dealer 8 times for this issue but they have been unable to recreate the situation and such unable to diagnose. there are many instances across the country on review boards and discussion websites with the same symptoms but the dealer is still unwilling to diagnose.
Headlights started with a flickering and random shut off, now no regular headlights but high beam come on for a second when you switch them on but won"t stay on. multiple attempts to fix at 2 dealerships. possible problem frount module but no part available nationwide to even try to fix it. told by dealership used part would mess up "brain" on vehicle so used part not option either. *tt
The headlights will randomly go out. once in a while switching to high beam will help for a very short time, but usually i am completely without lights when it happens. there is no warning. the running lights do not even work anymore when that happens. i have been in a number of extremely dangerous situations because of this. i end up having to hope i can find a place to pull off the road, without being hit first, and turn the car off and on again until the lights finally work. nothing else stops working, just the lights. there are so many complaints all over the internet for so many different model years i can't believe this hasn't been recalled yet. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2008 dodge grand caravan. the contact was driving 55 mph when the vehicle started to jerk and burning fumes were emitted into the vehicle. the contact also mentioned that the headlights would fail sporadically without warning. the vehicle was taken to the dealer who diagnosed that the front passenger side caliper was defective and needed to be replaced. three months later, the rear driver caliper needed to be replaced as well. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure who did not offer any assistance. the vehicle was repaired. the failure mileage was 38,000 and the current mileage was 55,643.
Driving at random times, speeds, etc, the lights would suddenly flash, wipers turn on high, wiper fluid come out and the horn would honk. sometimes this would last only 2-3 seconds, sometimes up to 10 miuntes. turning the key off and then back on would not clear the problem. taken to dealer in november 2010. they re-flashed the pcm and the issue disappeared for 12 months. problems resumed in november 2011. taken to dealer. could not diagnose and decided to change an accessory control module. situation causes very unsafe operating condition by distracting driver, obscuring drivers view, distracting other drivers, causing sight problems for oncoming drivers with uncontrolled illumination of lighting. *kb
My headlights (both high beam and low beam) will turn off while i am driving at night. it can also happen in the daytime, but i notice it at night. sometimes they will just go off for a few seconds and sometimes they will turn off and stay off. when they turn off and stay off i have to pull over (which can be hard in the dark with no headlights). stop the car and turn off the car. then when i restart the car the headlights will work again at least for awhile. sometimes this happens several times a night and other times it won't happen for days or even weeks. the problem first started happening about a year ago with approximately 50,000 miles on the car. i have taken it to the dealer, but they can't find a problem. *tr
While driving or parked & turned off with no one near the van, the engine starts, the horn starts blaring, the wipers turn on full blast, the wiper fluid shoots out, and lights wont work! at first, we could disconnect battery or relay & it would stop. the last time, we had to disconnect alternator. this is a major safety issue! *tr
I bought the car on nov. 2008 , new from mccune dodge, and for the last year the car has stall on 4 different times, haven't been able to duplicate the problem at the dealer , no sensor light comes on, also have been having different issues with emergency brake pad, the shift gear , interiors light on center-map lights flicker constantly and rear dome. *tr
I have a 2008 dodge grand caravan with 3.3 v6 engine. i have a headlight malfunction on my minivan. my headlight will flicker on and off while driving on the highway, city streets and sometimes while waiting for a stop sign. this is very dangerous at night when you need your headlight for visibility. headlight switch has been replaced with a new one but the headlight malfunction has not been solved. my vehicle has 35,600 miles and the first time the malfunction occurred was at 33,100 miles. *tr
Our 2008 grand caravan has been in the dealership for repair 7 times since purchase. the last occurrence almost caused my wife to be in an accident. the turn signals of the vehicle stopped working. along with that the windows would not function nor would the ac. she had to restart the van twice to get the turn signals working again. while driving to the dealership for service, the vehicle shut off and restarted on its own while in motion. the dealer determined that it was the ignition node and replaced on 6-19-08. we have requested a buy back due to safety issues but have not been granted one at this time. *tr
