We have classified the 12 complaints from 2005 Dodge Grand Caravan about VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL into the following categories.
Stopped at the traffic light and proceeded through the intersection. the vehicle was in motion and suddenly accelerated. tried to slow the vehicle down using the brake pedal which would not engage or press down. car continued to accelerate faster. continued to try to break the car and slow down. brakes did not respond. tried to change the gear to neutral or park. car kept accelerating. pulled off the road into the curb and through a fence. as the car was approaching the building at high speed. turned the car off and it continued into a concrete block commercial building and bounced back about 15-20 feet and stopped at that point. front-end damage to the car. knocked concrete block wall and door down. blessed to be alive. car was totaled. also, the air bag did not deploy. police said that the throttle must have been stuck open.
After refueling van, started vehicle and pulled away from pump driving onto the road applied throttle and engine died without notice just shut off. i am a technician have been for a long time and have seen this problem on many different makes and models the issue is the vent valve on my dodge grand caravan its built into the fuel tank. unlike my dodge other brands like nissan honda etc.. actually take care of their customer. had traffic been busy we could have been seriously injured if not killed.i've read so many complaints for this issue all blaming vent valve and i agree. something needs to be done and the manufacturer held liable. dodge already had this same issue on chrysler 300 and a few other cars and they made a lifetime warranty for those fuel tanks its time they do the same for the vans. *tr
Traveling east on the nys i90 yesterday, 12:45pm - lunch rush hour time, approximate speed 62 mph when suddenly the vehicle stopped accelerating. pumping the gas pedal, holding it down to the floor made no difference, although the rpms were racing. luckily we were traveling in the far right lane (of the three available) and as i was coasting was able to do so on the shoulder. we were also fortunate that we were near an exit and we able to coast along to this point before we finally had to shut off the car, midway along an exit ramp, along the shoulder. had we been in one of the other lanes during this mishap i probably would not be in any condition to file a report. vehicle was placed on a flat bed, driven to our mechanic, where it currently is. i have noticed several complaints regarding the autolocks on this vehicle. ours were fixed (partially) once. the driver's side rear still does not function as it should and needs to be locked and unlocked manually. this vehicle had no prior owners, purchased new. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 dodge grand caravan. the contact was driving approximately 30 mph and depressed the accelerator pedal but the vehicle would not respond. the vehicle was towed to an authorized dealer but had not been diagnosed. the manufacturer was not notified of the defect. the approximate failure mileage was 62,000.
My tank showed i had 1/2 tank of gas and ran out of gas this has happened also at 1/4 tank of gas i am afraid i will run out of gas on a busy street or highway also my gas pedal sticks some times i am afraid it will stick some time and will cause an accident thanks *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2005 dodge grand caravan. while driving 40-45 mph the gas pedal became stuck and the vehicle would not stop. she applied the brakes excessively in order to slow the vehicle down and placed the vehicle in neutral and park to stop the vehicle from accelerating. she restarted the vehicle and the rpms increased excessively. the vehicle was not taken to an authorized dealer or local mechanic. the contact was unable to provide a vin. the failure and current mileages were 130,000.
2005 dodge grand caravan gas pedal sticks when pressing down, to break it loose you have to press it further down. i can feel it sticking when i accelerate the vehicle. has a recall been initiated or will there be one in the near future. this has been happening for the past approximately 2 years. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2005 dodge grand caravan. the contact stated that as he started his vehicle and stepped on the accelerator pedal, there was resistance. within minutes, the vehicle began to drive normally. the vehicle was taken to the dealer and they were unable to diagnose the failure or repair the vehicle. the failure mileage was 20,000.
The first indication of a problem was the airbag light on the dash remaining on occasionally after the vehicle was started. the problem then progressed to the airbag light remaining on continuously and the cruise control function and horn (both of which are mounted on the steering wheel) not working. these symptoms were identical to those experienced by earlier years of this vehicle model that resulted in a safety recall for replacement of the clock spring in the steering wheel. i had the clock spring replaced, which corrected the problems. *tr
Traveling on the interstate for a couple of continuous hours with the cruise control set at a constant speed and mild hills. when i went to press on the brake pedal on a level area of freeway the cruise control did not want to disengage. after applying very strong force to the brake pedal for a second or two (and being in shock because the vehicle was not slowing and i was fast approaching a large truck in my lane) i finally disengaged it by punching the off button on the steering column. if the cruise control had not disengaged or if traffic would have been heavier an accident may have happened at the legal speed limit of 75 mph in a remote area with all of my family aboard heading on vacation. *jb
After stopping vehicle in driveway, with foot on brake. the vehicle lurched forward and struck the vehicle that was parked there. *jb
I originally called dodge when this issue started and they would not do anything about it but when we would put the van in reverse the engine would not go into reverse and if you were not listening for it to "catch" you would put on the gas and be going forward. after calling a few times we just gave up and began a habit of shifting into reverse and making sure the vehicle was indeed in reverse. after several years of this we started having a problem with the vehicle speed. the engine would rev but the vehicle would not go if it was under any kind of strain, uphill or grade. after replacing everything from fuel injector to catalytic converter to spark plugs, wires and sensors and spending close to $1000 on it we ended up in a transmission repair shop which found our problem to be a cracked flex plate. that was $1500 more but the problem was fixed. the reverse is now working properly as well so i feel that this flex plate may have been the reverse issue as well. *tr
When the cruise control is engaged, and i pass another vehicle, the speed of my car will drop 3-5 mph below the preset speed after i have passed the vehicle, and then will increase to the preset speed. i have contacted the manufacturer and the dealer and was told today that the manufacturer is aware of this problem but feels repairs are not necessary. *jb
When slowly pulling into a parking place, vehicle suddenly accelerated (leaving tire marks on pavement) causing it to jump onto a sidewalk and through landscaping. the vehicle finally came to rest against a building. braking would not stop the vehicle.*ak
On three separate occasions in drive and one occasion in reverse vehicle suddenly accelerated while applying the brakes to come to a stop. dealer was contacted.*ak
