Problems with 2005 Dodge Durango FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

On average, the 2005 Dodge Durango starts to “feel” problems with the FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM and its various aspects after 102 961 miles.

Recently reported FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM problems on 2005 Dodge Durango

When filling the fuel tank, gasoline shoots out of the tank once the tank is full and after the pump handle has detected the tank being full and has shut off. i understand from talking to the local dealer, chrysler customer service and many comments on the internet that chrysler recalled certain 2005 durango's made in specific plants with specific parts. i was told by the dealer and by chrysler customer service that our durango was not recalled. i don't understand why only certain vehicles were recalled when others with the same issue were not recalled. this is a real safety concern for us. gasoline gets on us and our clothes our skin and on the ground. could start fire if a spark was nearby. a new tank cost $1300 plus labor which we can't afford. please help us stay safe.

When i fill the gas tank up gas comes back out the gas tank and goes on the ground and gets on the vehicle and on clothing. i have tried numerous gas stations and it happens all the time. i checked to see if there is a recall on my vehicle and there is not, but they have recalls on the same year and model as mine. this is a big safety issue and health issue because the gas comes in contact with your skin and risk of fire and environmental concerns when the gas goes on the ground.

More than a gallon of fuel spills out if you fill up the gas tank

When fueling my durango approaching the 90% capacity, gas gushes out of the fuel tank causing fuel spray also additional rust damage on my fender under the fuel door.

I have not had a accident thank god. i brought my 2005 dodge durango february2, 2015. make a long story short with in the past 2 month i have had to have my tank dropped 3 times now i have to have it dropped again so this will be the forth time &my truck wil not start &the pump is not coming on. i got a letter about the airbags recalls, my question is have it ever been a recall on the computer or the electrical system for this suv? i think my whole fuel system is messed up cause when i go to fill it up gas come shotting back out the tank at me & i see it was a recall on that & i have not recieved my letter to go have it checked out. please please please help

Vehicle throttle stuck in drive as driver was pulling forward to back up into garage. vehicle plunged forward 20 feet, hit an overhead door and bumper guard causing the airbag to deploy. airbag lacerated, abraised and bruised left forearm of driver,[xxx], requiring emergency room treatment at mercy medical 301 st. paul street, baltimore, md 21202. vehicle was totaled and claim filed with geico claim # [xxx]. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

I went to fill my tank up on saturday march 7th 2015. i just purchase the vehicle that day. gas started spurting out of the tank and got all over my hands. i then took the vehicle out for a drive on sunday morning with my girlfriend and the vehicle stalled and i almost rolled back on the car behind men. this happens two more times throughout the day. then today tuesday march 10th i drove to my parents and noticed the car sputtering upon gradual acceleration. *tr

Large evap leak - code p0455: inlet & outlet fuel tank rings have rusted out. previous recall e01 repaired in 2010 complete. after effects from previous fuel leakage has caused rust damage to the fuel tank connector rings. the safety of the vehicle is a huge concern as this can cause the vehicle to catch on fire at any time. solution recommended: replace fuel tank & fuel pump.

After filling up vehicle, a quantity of gasoline flushed out of the fuel filler neck causing a distinct fire hazard. this has occurred for each fill up. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 dodge durango. while adding fuel to the vehicle, it spewed out of the tank. the failure occurred without warning. the vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 56,000.

Fuel system - replce fuel pump still check engine light stays on denostic says fuel tank sensor ,i replace with new pump still say same thing .gas over flow when pumping full tank of gas .gas evaporate quickly. *tr

Fuel fill burps when tank is almost filled with fuel causing it to run down the sides of the vehicle it is a safety issue due to the possibility of it causing a fire. have not received notice on this recall yet. *tr

My airbag light has been illuminating and when i did a recall search an airbag recall did come up but there is no fix? also when i fill the gas tank i get major splash back. huge fire issue. i know there was a recall on some 2005 dodge durangos for that problem but the dealer said my vin was not included and wouldn't fix it. how can i get my vin included? another issue is the engine light comes on and reads code p0456(very small emissions leak)..but the emissions system has been gone over and gone over but there is nothing that would indicate a leak. *tr

I am not happy that my vin number pulls up only one recall when a few of the issues that i am having are on the recall list. for starters the side of my vehicle is flaking paint and not to mention everytime i fuel it, gas spurts all over the vehicle and ground. a major fire hazard especially when my children are in the back 2 seats. *tr

While filling the fuel tank, when the pump kicks off fuel spits back out of the fuel tank on the ground, the vehicle, and me (if i am standing close). i have found numerous complaints and conversations on the internet regarding this problem. some are referenced below: nhtsa investigation #rq08005 led to recall #09v003000 nhtsa reference #10051769: tsb #sb-14-002-13; customer satisfaction campaign #csc-10051769-3696 warranty bulletin #d-13-09: subject: (x48) fuel tank inlet check valve (fuel filler tube) purpose of bulletin: to announce an extended warranty on the fuel tank inlet check valve on 2005-2006 dodge durango vehicles stating: "this warranty extension coverage is unlimited time and miles." i took my vehicle to benchmark-chrysler-dodge-jeep-ram, 1313 grants mill way, birmingham, alabama 35210, (205) 957-1313 for this problem. they advised me up front that i would be charged $105 to diagnose the vehicle, but that i would be reimbursed if the problem was covered under any recalls or warranties. after the diagnosis they said they needed to start by replacing the filler neck and if that does not fix the problem they would need to replace the fuel tank. they said this would not be covered under the lifetime warranty nor the recall for this problem. after leaving benchmark i had to fill up the vehicle and i videoed the fuel spit-back when the pump shut off. i feel that this is a serious safety issue and it is documented that they have acknowledged that this year and model vehicle has a problem, but they do not want to take responsibility for correcting the problem.

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 dodge durango. the contact stated that while refueling, fuel spew back out of the vehicle. the contact mentioned that the vehicle experienced same failure listed in recall nhtsa campaign number: 09v003000 (fuel system, gasoline). the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure but no solution was offered. the failure mileage was 140,000.

Owner of 2005 dodge durango with faulty check valve in fuel filler tube. vehicle vin currently not included in chrysler recall h45, (nhtsa 05v034000). upon fuel fill up, vehicle overflows substantial amount of fuel from filler neck onto side of vehicle and ground on every fuel hose cut off.

Constant fuel smell while driving and sitting still. fuel spits back out filler when fueling. rust through in left rear quarter panel. problem has been ongoing for a couple of years. getting worse.there is a recall for this problem but does not cover my vin.

Was driving and all of a sudden i smelt something burning in the dash board and all instrument lights started to get dim and dimmer and then i notice smoke coming from the dashboard and all most immediately the door locks and windows stop working, the car would lock itself and the windows stop working at all and at this point the rear door do not open at all. i ask the dealer at the lot that i bought it from at the time of purchase if the vehicle had been in a accident or was there any recalls on this vehicle and he said no and that i bought the van as is and to this day i cant get this dealer to see that this car is unsafe to operate and that i am not going to risk mine nor my kids life to drive it and he will not even trade me out of this car for something better. the other day i was fueling the van and all of a sudden gasoline shot back out the tank and spilled gas all over me, scared the hell out of me. not only that, i was driving down the interstate in my state and out of no where my seat on its own terms began to move forward all the way to the steering wheeling pressing me to the wheel and i am 6ft 3in tall and weigh 230lbs i again call the dealership to complain and got the same story that i agreed to purchase the vehicle as is, i agreed that i did but i told him that i do not think that he told me everything that i needed to know about possible safety issues. and again i have four children age 6 months to four years old whom i love very dearly. *tr

Engine will without warning lurch forward. it will also completely shut down making steering and braking extremely difficult. this vehicle had no codes showing and repair shop can't replicate the problem this lurching of the vehicle has occurred almost daily. and has completely shut down twice. i drive with two kids in the car and this is extremely dangerous. their are several complaints with the exact same problem. *tr

'takata recall' there are several things that are going on with my 2005 dodge durango slt 4.7 liter v8, 4 wheel drive suv that are alarming. every single time i fuel the vehicle it shoots gasoline right back on out of the gas tank where you insert the fuel nozzle and covers me with gas! plus i have replaced the throttle position sensor several times, along with the idle air control valve, and map sensor just to try and correct the stalling while either slowing down to come to a stop, or it also occurs quite frequently when the vehicle is at normal operational temperature and just idling. the rpm gauge inside the vehicle starts fluctuating irratically before stalling. you lose all power and control over the vehicle when it stalls! another problem that's present is hard shifting, or the vehicle fails to shift until it almost pegs out the rpm gauge. it's like both idle and shift are affected creating a safety issue. the transmission has been serviced regularly, tuneups, etc. however despite staying on top of all vehicle maintenance requirements the vehicle still runs poorly and has been doing this since i have owned it at 78,000 miles. it's now got 113k on it and i honestly think the vehicle is a safety hazard and needs the manufacturing company to address all of these issues! this is an ongoing issue that no matter how many times i have the vehicle repaired and the parts replaced it continues to stall out and shift incorrectly there's 18 trouble codes that keep coming up including the air bag on the passenger side, which really doesn't seem to fit what's really going on. no trouble codes for the fuel tank shooting gas out of the inlet pipe that leads to gas tank. this stalling and loss of power happens at all speeds on the freeway, city driving, or literally parked or slowing down from any speed. any kind of weather condition. problem started 8/01/2014 to present day.

When fueling, there is no shutoff so fuel goes everywhere. dealership says problem was fixed but it is not fixed. it has been doing this since i purchased the vehicle. it is very unsafe and causes a wet slippery surface at gas pump, along with gas leakage down the side of vehicle, which has created rust now.

Just purchased my 2005 durango 5.7 hemi limited used at the end of 2013. have had it for less than 6 months. after having it for a month the check engine light came on. the next day my durango stalled while i was driving at around 40-45 miles an hour in downtown san diego!! i put it in neutral and it started right back up. i thought it was just bad gas because the check engine light went off. but in the last few weeks it has done the same thing about 10 times. my friend hooked it up to his code reader and it said my egr valve needs replaced. but now i'm seeing all of these complaints on here about the same issues and i'm quite worried. i am also having a problem with the fuel tank. i can't fill up my tank or the gasoline shoots out everywhere!! i noticed there is no metal piece that closes off when you pull the nozzle out. also my in dash navigational system/cd player/radio quit working. screen on in dash console is just lines. now my blue tooth in the rear view mirror only works intermittently. have to close the rear hatch twice for cargo light warning on dash to go out. charger port in front panel stopped working on the second day i owned it. seems as if there are some major electrical issues here!! i owned a dodge dakota years ago and never had any problems with it!! i'm really surprised at the fact that dodge is not taking care of these issues. i will be contacting a dealer for the recall issues and will let you know how that goes, especially since i've read more than one complaint on here that the dealerships aren't honoring the recalls. ridiculous!! *tr

When you go to put gas in it the gas wont shut off and i have an inside light that says gas cap even though we have replaced the gas cap and i have rust where the gas has run down the car. im also having trouble with my gauges in the vehicle and it takes spells that it doesn't want to take gas. *tr

The gas will not shut off when refueling the vehicle. gas runs out on the ground. i have a light that comes on saying gas cap even though i bought a new one. and i have rust on the side where gas has run down the vehicle. i have also had an incident where everything electrical in my vehicle has went crazy. lights flashing gauges malfuctioning and at this time it would not take any fuel you could push on the accelerator all you wanted but it would not take fuel. i have read where other people have had problems with their gas refueling to. this is a very serious and dangerous problem. i would like an investigation into this and i would like a response please. i think the manufacture should be held responsible for their mistakes and this is clearly their mistake. *tr

On any number of occasions (regardless of outside temperature or whether or not the vehicle was at normal operating temperature) while the vehicle is at a slow speed (in forward or reverse) the engine will stall without warning. with the loss of engine power comes the normal loss of power steering and power brakes. it appears to be most frequent when pulling into or out of a parking lot, stop sign, etc. the slow speeds are not inherently dangerous, except for the fact that stalling while in traffic and suddenly reducing speed or stopping puts myself and other motorist in jeopardy. when backing into a parking space, the loss of steering and braking capabilities create a risk of minor damage to other parked cars and could put a pedestrian at risk while being distracted and not being able to stop or steer as easily. there are no obvious sounds or engine or transmission noises or vibrations or anything to give warning that this could occur. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 dodge durango. the contact stated that when attempting to refuel the vehicle, fuel would spew out of the filler neck. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 100,000.

Fuel sprays out of fuel tank once tank is full when filling. *tr

I was driving in my apartment complex and as i slowed down to turn my truck just shut off. steering wheel locks and i am not able to turn. i have to press hard on the brake for it to stop and i can then put it into park and turn the key to turn it back on. i have two small children of the age of 1 & 2. having them in the car with me when this happens is nerve wrecking. it's happened at least once or twice every 2-3 weeks. i have asked mechanics in regards to this and have had it checked and no one can tell me what it is. the previous owner said that it did the same not all the time but when he took it to the dodge dealer, they couldn't tell him what it was either. my last (most recent) incident was on 5/10/14 - the car shut off four times that day. 2 happened while i was stopped at a red light, one happened as i was slowing down to park and one happened while i was turning and the car shut off in the middle of the turning lane while my family was in the car with me. the other issue i have is with my fuel tank. i can't fill my tank because when i do ... it spits out gas. also, i've had to switch out my il pressure switch twice since february 2014. i have no idea as to why it's doing that. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 dodge durango. the contact stated that after refueling, fuel would spray out of the filler neck regardless of the fuel level capacity. the contact referenced nhtsa campaign id number 09v003000 (fuel system, gasoline) and stated that the vehicle was included in the recall however, the part needed to complete the recall service was unavailable. the manufacturer was notified and they were unable to provide an expected date for the remedy part to become available. the approximate failure mileage was 220,000.

When you are filling up the gas tank and the nozzle shuts off when it's full. the tank or check valve doesn't close and a lot of gasoline flows back out onto the side of the durango and on the ground. this could potentially be very dangerous. *tr

When you fill the tank up with gas and the nozzle shuts off a lot of gasoline spills out of the tank onto the durango and on the ground. i'm the second owner. the first owner warned me of this before hand. he said it has always done this and never did anything about it. i called chrysler and they said "my vin number is not covered under the recall." the recall was for the check valve. they also said "bring it in to a dealer and have them look at it." i asked if they would fix it at their cost. they said "there is no guaranty." this is a potentially very dangerous issue that chrysler should be responsible for. *tr

We were filling the fuel tank at a gas station, after the tank was filled it sprayed fuel on my wife. i have investigated this issue online and found this recall. i will also contact dodge ,but i also have read a few instances where they are resistant to this safety issue so i decided to also report it here. *tr

When you fill the fuel tank and the pump shuts off the gas always comes gushing out all over the vehicle and the ground. dodge has recalled some of the 2005 durango's for this problem and replaced the fuel tanks, but my vin is not on the list even though it has the same problem. i have contacted dodge and they have confirmed that they will not cover this problem. i have researched this and many people are having the same issue. *tr

When filling the tank, the pump shuts off and gasoline continues to spill out. this has happened on numerous occasions and we have to avoid topping off the tank in order to avoid the spill. when doing some research, we found that there was a recall in 2009 for the fuel system/gasoline storage tank assembly. today (4/8/13), we contacted and spoke to our dodge/chrysler dealer and they stated that there was indeed a recall in 2009 and apparently our vehicle vin was not covered under the recall and that there were no extensions. we are just in awe, that a potential fire hazard and something this dangerous would not continue have an extension under the recall. had we known there was a recall, we would have had the situation addressed sooner. *tr

My 2005 dodge durango had the completed recall h45 worked done on 4/27/2009. the dodge dealership replaced the gas tank per the h45 recall. the dodge dealership considers the matter closed but the issue has now occurred with this new installed tank. the vehicle had 28,994 miles when this work was done. now the vehicle has 68,000 miles on it and the same issue occurs while filling the gas tank up. upon shut off of the gas pump, fuel will spit up out of the inlet fuel tube and leave fuel on the side of my suv and leave a puddle of fuel below the car. i wanted to report this issue asap due to the fact that recall h45 was completed on this vehicle but problem is occuring again. under the recall h45 the dealer will replace the fuel tank, but what about the inlet fuel check valve? was the tank inlet check valve replaced when the fuel tank was replaced? was the fuel tank replaced on my suv a newer unit that passed all safety checks or did i get an older unit that still had the issues with the inlet check valve failing? this issues needs further investigation to meet the safety recall h45 completed work done by the dealer and to help others that may have the same issue occuring once again with there durangos under this recall. *tr

Each time i fill the vehicle with fuel it spits back up through the filler tube and all over the side of the vehicle. the pump then shuts off. i have notified two fuel stations of this at the time i filled the vehicle thinking it might be a pump problem, but i researched and many vehicles of this model have reported this to be a problem. there is a strong odor of fuel in and around the vehicle at the time of fill up and there after. active recalls do not appear to cover my vehicle, but the problem is there and obviously needs to be repaired. my dealership has been contacted. *tr

I received a letter recently from my local dodge dealer indicating my 2005 dodge durango would require repair for something causing the fuel to spill out during fill up. this has happened to me several times in the past as i was unaware that there was a recall for this. after receiving this letter a few weeks ago i inspected the quarter panel underneath the gas tank more closely noticing bubbling of the paint with chipping starting. pressing on the paint it sounded corrosive like rust. as i began to chip some of the paint away i discovered rust and two holes that were completely through. looking through the holes i could see rust behind the body. after reviewing several car and dodge forums i see that this has happened to several people in the same area of the drive quarter panel. i can only assume there is a correlation between the fuel problem and the rust that appears to have come inside out to the body of the car. there is no other rust on this car and has been well maintained. i contacted my local dealer who informed me that the recall on the inlet valve is still valid however rust would not be. it concerns me that chrysler doesn't feel responsible for the damage caused by their defective item. how could i have know that this was happening since i just received notification i'm concerned the rust damage is more great than i can actually see. of course i'm additionally concerned with possible fire etc which is what the recall specifically indicates. i will make appointment with the dealership for repair of the fuel inlet valve.i would like chrysler to also pay for the damage that was caused by their defective part. i have 99,200 miles currently. i don't want my concerns to be dismissed as i feel i'm not the only one that this has happened to. i only received a letter recently for this problem so i feel all parts of the problem should be addressed. *tr

I filled my 2005 dodge durango today with gas and the nozzle clicked and gas spewed out all over me and my nine year old son this is unsafe needs attention right away. *tr

Vehicle stalls at low speeds and deceleration, idling hard at a stop and while in park, will stall when idling hard, gas spills out of inlet when filling up completely, sluggish in temperatures below 30 degrees and above 80 degrees, requires more than normal maintenance, service tech's can never diagnose the causes of stalling or idling issues, think it might concern the throttle body, transmission has torqued itself out before, stripped screws, rebuilt at 90000 miles. just waiting for it to go again. this vehicle has been nothing but issues ever since i bought it used. every fix just feels like a band aid to the manufacturing problems it has. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 dodge durango. while refueling the vehicle, fuel spewed out of the filler neck without warning. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic. the technician diagnosed that the fuel pump module seal fractured and needed to be replaced. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 60,000.

Upon filling up the tank the fuel will spray out all over the place. i took it to the dealer and they stated there was a recall for this issue but it had already been done and even though it failed again it is my problem. i see 2006 and on have a unlimited time and mileage warranty for this issue. number: 14-001-12 group: fuel system date: january 20, 2012 subject: fuel spit back during refueling due to faulty inlet check valve x39 (unlimited time and mileage warranty extension) overview: this bulletin involves replacing the fuel filler tube if the condition occurs. models: 2006 - 2008 (hb) durango 2007 - 2008 (hg) aspen note: this extended warranty bulletin applies to vehicles equipped with a naturally aspirated gasoline engines. symptom/condition: some customers may experience a fuel spit back condition during a refueling event. diagnosis: if the customer experiences the symptom/condition, proceed to the repair procedure. parts required: qty. part no. description ar (1) cnnzx390aa tube, fuel filler (4) 6500911 rivet, splash shield attaching

When you fill the vehicle with gas, the pump will not shut off. this is resulting in gasoline spraying out of the opening. this sprays gas all over the person filling the vehicle, down the side of the vehicle and the ground.

When i fill my gas tank i get a very strong gas smell, the cab fill with gas fumes. you can only smell gas on the drivers side i brought it in 3 times to be looked at but not issues can be found. the odometer says "gas cap" but the dealer finds no code issues. there is clearly a issue with my durango but no one is willing to help me with it!! dodge said that my durango is not included in the recall notice and they are more than willing to hook it up to there computer for $100.00 bucks! i have had this durango since 12/2212 and have been working with the private dealer that sold it to me he is not able to find anything wrong with it. i am only getting 7-10 miles per gallon that is crazy. im not sure what to do. *tr

My gas tank has overflowed twice since december 22nd when i was fueling the vehicle . while fueling the gas came pouring out where you fill it . i have read that there was a recall for this problem but i have not received any info on this nor do i know if it was ever addressed i have had this vehicle for about 3 years. and where i bought it is no longer in business. *tr

Every time i fill the gas tank, the gasoline spit out at the end of filling. *tr

I just purchased the 2005 dodge durango limited on december 11th, 2012, i filled up the gas tank all the way on the morning of friday, december 14th, 2012, the pump clicked off, and gas sprayed everywhere. dodge will not help me, neither will any omaha dodge dealer. i have never owned a vehicle that sprayed gasoline everywhere when pumping gas, this is definitely a manufacture defect that should have been addressed at the plant. whatever happened to quality control in america, please, please, please help!! this is a fire hazard waiting to happen!! *tr

Recently purchased used vehicle. every time you fill up the fuel tank, when the pump automatically shuts off fuel sprays past the nozzles vapor recovery boot and out of the fuel filler neck. this is vaporized/atomized gasoline, which leads to an extreme fire hazard. i notified dodge of this situation, but they responded only by saying that there are no open recalls or campaigns regarding my vehicle. *tr

I purchased a used 2005 dodge durango and recently in december 2012 it started having problems when trying to put gas in it. the gas pump clicks off and the the gas starts to spew back out not only does it go on the car it actually even reaches you. there has been recalls for this year durango but i was told my vin number was not covered. since this problem i have been doing some research and have found out that over 3,000 people also have complained. i believe this is a very dangerous situation and they say it can cause a fire. i dont understand why the nhtsa would not recognize and demand there be more recalls done and honored free of charge. a life is a life and cant believe anyone would take a chance with it. *tr

This is getting ridiculous and it seems that no one is willing to take ownership for a faulty system that is obviously dangerous. what i found to be absurd is how multiple people have posted numerous complaints about the same issue, recalls have been made for the same issue and still no action. i have a 2005 dodge durango and each and every time i fill my tank the pump will stop but an excessive amount of gas will overflow. how many complaints must be entered before someone takes action or are manufacturers waiting for a catastrophic mishap to get their attention. fumes could easily get under the vehicle, and find the catalytic converter and ignite. something must be done, the time is now. take responsibility! *tr
