We have classified the 35 complaints from 2005 Dodge Durango about VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL into the following categories.
2005 dodge durango goes dead while driving on any type of road doesn't matter if on interstate or dirt road it just dies and you don't even know it as all lights and radio work. results in lose of ability to steer, breaks, and speed. have to put the durango in park once it rolls to a stop than cut it off and back on for it to work again. sometimes it will go 25 miles with out problem at other times 5 feet. no check engine light is on and took to an automotive shop and no codes reading on the diagnostic computer. stalls while moving on highways, dirt roads, & interstates!
The transfer case make clicking counts when driving and while car is idle. it also makes these clicking noises while the car is off putting the car into 4 lo on its own. the car will sometimes shut off while driving low speeds and attempting to make a turn. the battery dies frequently after a week of not is use.
It is a awd car but sometime the 4lo light comes on with a very annoying noise from the bottom of the car or engine, then the speed being slowed down significantly, the car becomes hard to keep going. the streaking sound and the speed being reduced like the break being stepped on abrubtly makes me pull over for safety.
When i unlock the doors with the remote or open unlocked doors, the shift motor activates, i can hear it engaging and disengaging. there is a delay upon starting my truck before the drive gear kick in and i can proceed to drive vehicle. when i make a sharp turn going forward or backing...the rear tires lock up. the awd lights flickers on/off. constant smell like something is burning.

This has happened on multiple occasions!!!!! it happens at any speed, the truck will lose all power and shut off without warning. i can't steer or do anything but put the truck in park and restart the truck. i have taken it in the be looked at and nothing can be figured out as it does it randomly. i have four children and this last time we were turning and the truck just shut off while another vehicle was coming down the street. i have researched this and sees others are having the same issue. i have had some of the suggestions done such as replacing the egr valve and flushing the system. i need an answer as i do not feel safe!!!!!!!!!! *tr
My 2005 dodge durango will go into 4 wheel low with out warning and will shift into 4 wheel lock with out warning there is something goin on with the 2005 dodge durango i have read many forums with 500 people saying the same thing . please make dodge recall this as it is going to result in fatalities . a lot of people are changing the transfer case , transfer case motor and electrical and it keeps doing the same thing to make these vehicles unreliable and can cause death to my family and others as well please make dodge recall the 4 wheel drive . thank you *tr
Today my durango lurched forward uncontrollably, hitting 3 cars in the parking lot at the elementary school where i work. my foot was not on the accelerator. there was no way i could have accelerated that quickly in 12-14 feet to cause that kind of damage. if there had been any children out there, they could have been killed! it was the most terrifying thing that ever happened to me. a recall needs to be issued immediately or someone will be hurt or killed. *tr
Vehicle misfires during acceleration. almost caused vehicle to be rear ended pulling out into traffic. after having it looked at by the dealer, found out i am not the only one with the problem. it stems from a design defect in the rain cowl that allows water to pass through the windshield wiper opening where it runs onto the engine and pools in the spark plug holes, causing a short. chrysler redesigned the cowl to correct the problem but did not notify owners or recall the vehicles to fix the issue. *tr
I have a 2005 dodge durango limited 4x4 it constantly locks into 4lo and 4lock all on its own and engages on its own even with vehicle off most times locking in 4lo causing tires to stick and very difficult to drive or turn this happens at any rate of speed also when first starting truck and putting it in drive or reverse transmission is gives a loud air leaking noise and takes a long time to pick up and drive i have just recently bought this vehicle and have taken it back to the dealer multiple times to be told they are unsure what is causing the issue. i have done research and see that several dodge durango owners are having this issue please help. *tr
Vehicle switches to 4lock automatically while driving at high and low speeds. vehicle becomes sluggish and makes it impossible to turn. at this point i fear for my life. after reading so many complaints of the same issue. i see i'm not alone. *tr
On 3/19/2014 i was driving in the middle lane of a very busy street called gratiot ave with heavy traffic and the engine just stopped. i could not accelerate and had just enough speed to slowly merge right and turn into a shopping mall off the street in order to miss oncoming traffic. my truck had completely stalled. *tr
2005 dodge durango 5.7 hemi. while driving down the road the service 4wd warning light started blinking and the 4wd started to activate on its own. as the vehicle sits when activating the door locks with the remote the 4wd actuates on its own. *tr
I was reversing out of my garage, stopped and shifted into park to pull up a little and then was going to reverse again. while shifting into drive the car stuttered three times and accelerated forward at full speed crashing into my house and going right through my bathroom and laundry room. my daughter said she heard the screeching tires from inside the house. my friend and i were both injured in the incident as well as now having to repair my house. *tr
While in awd the vehicle switches to 4 lo by itself. this makes it hard to make turns, forward and reverse. the 4 lo light blinks and service 4 wd lights stays on. i do not manually switch out of awd, as 4 wd is not needed. however, as i stated before, it switches on its own. on the date of the incident, the vehicle would not return to awd from 4 lo. i was told to unhook the battery terminals and after i replace them back to the posts, it would reset the awd. this did not work. my children and i were stuck on the side of the road until help arrived. i have researched this topic and read complaints from others with the same problems with the same vehicle. many of them saying after paying out large amounts for parts and repairs the problem is still occurring. many are not even sure where to start as far as repairs go. i would like some definate answers and diamlerchrysler to be held accountable. thank you. *tr
The car begins to sputter and stall at constant speeds, then stalls while running which disables the power steering and brakes. this situation is profoundly dangerous as it renders the car nearly unable to stop. the only way you can stop is if you can get the car into neutral, coast off the road and quickly restart the engine. the engine light does come on during. i have gotten this issue repaired four times and it continues to occur and the sensors that correspond to the code have been replaced twice each and are in full working order. dodge is aware of the issue but will not do anything. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 dodge durango. the contact stated that while driving 40 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. the contact stated that she pulled the vehicle over and restarted the vehicle and it functioned properly. the vehicle was taken to the dealer who diagnosed that the tps censor and the throttle body needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired but the failure recurred. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 168,000.
Vehicle stalls during at low speeds, often during parking lot or driveway maneuvers; - they occur during decelerations, such as braking for a stop sign or traffic signal. happens multiple times without warning which has led to near accidents. extremely dangerous. surprised that there have been two investigations that have both been closed. there needs to be a recall asap. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 dodge durango. the contact stated that while traveling at various speeds, the vehicle suddenly stalled without warning. the vehicle was able to be restarted after being shifted into neutral and taken to a private mechanic where it was found that the throttle control sensor had failed. the contact personally repaired the vehicle. the manufacturer was not contacted about the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 130,000. the vin was unavailable.
This vehicle on numerous occasions shuts off while moving down the road. started out only during slow speeds, but has started to do it while actually cruising down the road. no warning, just total loss off steering, brakes and engine. luckily it has cranked back up and able to get out of the road. i also have had on several occasions the temperature gauge indicate that the engine was overheating and the car will just rev up and lose power. i have had everything checked (fluids, oil pump, radiator, plugs and wires etc) and find nothing wrong. of course nothing will be wrong until the engine blows, which then can be fixed at my expense. another problem to add to the list is the liftgate acuator stopped working which has made it impossible to open the rear hatch. the plastic gear in the motor is broke but you have to buy the whole part to fix it. *ln
First, the cruise control stopped working. then, the speedometer and odometer quit working when the abs, parking brake, check engine, and traction control lights all came on. took it to the dealer to repair the instrument cluster recall, and was told that it needs a new abs control module and wiring harness. the wiring harness is completely melted, probably because of a short in the control module - at least that's what i was told at the dealership. the wiring harness is on a national backorder until late september, so i am without abs brakes, traction control, and a speedometer/odometer until then. *tr
Vehicle purchased used in june 2010. within days of purchase, vehicle began stalling while pulling out into traffic. vehicle was returned to the dealer several times. egr valve was replaced and throttle service done, idler pulley replaced. stalling problem continued to occur on and off along with hard shifting, hesitating, lack of power issues. transmission rebuilt in jan 2012 after it "froze" backing out of the driveway. bell housing leak detected and fixed in june 2012. stalling worsened, occurring not only from start up but while traveling straight in acceleration to speeds just above 40 mph. revving in park, neutral and while stopped in traffic started in early 2013 and continues today. have had vehicle in for service on numerous occasions with no fix to the problem. torque converter clutch, water pump, fuel injector, coil, vacuum sensor, air intake sensor, knock sensor, pcv valve, plugs and wires have all been replaced or repaired but problems persist. this vehicle is a danger as it stalls without warning in heavy traffic and when pulling out into traffic and revs so high at stops that i have had to put both feet on the brake to prevent it from lurching into the vehicle in front of me. *tr
2005 dodge durango stalling while slowing down or accelerating from a stop. january 2010 dealer said they could not find anything wrong. happened again 4/8/2010. dealer replaced egr valve but could not guarantee that would fix the problem and to come back if it happens again. hopefully it does not happen again in traffic and i get killed or kill someone. i am afraid to drive this car. *tr
Recently, toyota has had problems with spontaneous acceleration. it appears that both foot pedal and electronics are at fault. i believe the problem may be more widespread. i own a 2005 dodge durango which suffered from spontaneous acceleration. the "brain" had to be replaced twice. once when i got the suv and last year. it would be interesting if the electronic computer part or parts were made by the same manufacturer. in both of my cases it could have been deadly. please pass this on so it will not get lost in the "shuffle". *tr
On 4 occasions my vehicle has shut off while trying to turn on a intersection at a low speed. all fluids are in the correct levels and no fault lights appear. the vehicle does start normally after a second. the incidents are sporadic however are concerning because it could cause an accident. this appears to be a common issue with this type of vehicle an many have complained. the dealer can't do anything because they cannot recreate the problem and computer does not show fault code. i tried contacting dodge customer service about it but they are not willing to help.
Tl*the contact owns a 2005 dodge durango. while making a left turn with without warning the vehicle stalled. he was able to restart the vehicle. a technician from the dealer concluded that the throttle body increased the levels of carbon which caused low air flow at idle. the pcm was reset. the failure resurfaced, so she contacted the dealer. the technician stated that the ais was slow, so they repaired the idle and the ais control motor. she brought the vehicle back to the dealer 5 weeks later. the technicians discovered that the minimum air steering was too low. they adjusted the sir setting and replaced the idle arm motor. however at relatively low speeds the vehicle would continue to stall. the failure mileage was 19716. the current mileage was 48000.
Tl*the contact owns a 2005 dodge durango. while driving 35 mph, the accelerator pedal came apart and is currently very loose. the cause of the failure has not yet been determined. the current mileage was 56,000 and failure mileage was 55,500. updated 07/09/08 *bf a pin popped out of the gas pedal. updated
My 05 dodge durango is surging real bad while at a stopped position. after a couple minutes of surging it will shut itself off. i have taken it back to the dealership where i purchased it and the dealership has put it into the shop 3 times. the bodyshop told me they cleaned out something and that should fix it but it didn't. it is currently in the shop again and i just bought it on may 1st 2008. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2005 dodge durango. while driving approximately 45 mph, the vehicle surged to approximately 60 mph. the acceleration lasted for approximately 30 seconds. the contact had to depress the brake pedal with both feet and turn off the vehicle. the failure occurred two additional times before the vehicle was taken to the dealer. the dealer was unable to duplicate the failure. nhtsa campaign id number 02v020000 was referenced for the 2004 model as having the exact same failure. there were no injuries. the current mileage was 12,980 and failure mileage was 12,970.
I was on the interstate and i had the cruise control on. i hit the brakes to slow down and cruise control deactivated. i stopped at the stop sign. i proceeded through the stop sign and was making a left hand turn on to the overpass over the interstate. i was doing about 25 mph when i felt the throttle come out from under my foot. i hit the button on the steering wheel but it keep accelerating. i hit it multiple times and it finely went off after a few times. the vehicle had accelerated to almost 35 mph. when it went off the motor started making this horrible noise. it sounds like a broken connecting rod or it dropped a valve. the vehicle is out of warranty and it happened on the friday dec. 28th. this is sunday the 30th. havent had a chance to let anyone look at it. i will probably have to do the work myself. *tr
2/27/07 purchases: 2/27/07 problem: engine light serviced: 3/06/07 repaired: egr valve, 3/09/07 problem: engine light serviced: 3/12/07 repaired: ignition coil. 4/06/07 problem: engine light/vehicle cut off/ serviced: 4/17/07 repaired: short out cam and crankshaft sensor. due to vehicle having rough idle , needle jumping/vehicle shaking, vehicle shut down at stop lights. (5/01/07) returned vehicle to service due to shutting down when backing up/rough idle. (5/17/07) vehicle shut down on the expressway in front of a semi-truck, i didn't know if had shut down until the wheel became difficult to control. i coasted up the exit ramp and the vehicle start right up. dealership requested to take the vehicle to another service center for repairs. (5/18/07) took vehicle a dodge dealership, in which ,they stated that the vehicle has intermittent problems which were hard to detect. diagnoses of the problem would be difficult. also, stated this was the second vehicle in their service department with the same problems. to no avail they found nothing.*ak
Dt*: the contact stated while driving 50 mph, the speedometer reading rose from zero to 80 mph, however the actual vehicle speed remained constant. the vehicle jerked, then stalled completely. the contact was able to shift into neutral and let the vehicle drift backwards to avoid a collision with another vehicle. it was taken to a service dealer, where the ignition switch was replaced, however the problems persisted. the vehicle was taken back to the service dealer where the dealer was unable to determine the problem until it became worse.*ak
I own an 05 dodge durango purchased in jan 06. since aug 06 i have had intermittent problems with it cutting off while i am driving. it seems to occur when i am slowing down to make a turn. it's happened 5 times since then. no lights come on on the dashboard and i lose my power steering. i have to come to a complete stop, put the car in park and then it will restart. i've had it at the dealer twice and since they can't "duplicate" the problem, they can't fix it. the first time i took it in, they said my throttle body needed cleaning, of course, this was not something my warranty covered, but, i paid for it in the hopes of fixing the problem. i am concerned that next time it stalls, i will either rear end someone or someone will hit me. *nm
Dt*: the contact stated the vehicle stalled suddenly without warning at 25-35 mph on five occasion. after pulling off of the road and waiting a few minutes, the vehicle restarted on each occasion. there were no lights illuminated on the dash prior to each incident. the first four times the dealership could not duplicate the problem. the fifth time the dealership determined the throttle needed adjusting.
Engine surge causes vehicle to lurch. first instance was on march 10th 2006. the vehicle was running, i entered the vehicle put it into reverse and the tachometer jumped to almost 2000 rpms and vehicle lurched backwards then stopped. the second instance was on march 28th 2006 my wife was entering a parking space facing a store and reported stepping on the brake and the vehicle lurched forward jumping the concrete parking block with all 4 wheels, hitting the building then stopping. i believe this really is a problem as i now realize that during the first incident i needed to have the brake depressed to move the gear lever from park to reverse. maybe related to nhtsa odi id#s 10112496,10125643, 10141521, and 10152704. *jb
Purchased vehicle in march 2005, and within the first two days vehicle engine stalling at highway speeds while on the freeway. took vehicle to dealer, initially advised test drove and unable to duplicate. took vehicle to dealer again at a later date, reset memory. problem still recurred, back to dealer and dealer reflashed pcm. additionally, took to dealer accelerator assembly loose and bolt fell out while driving. accelerator very loose, part not available for 3 days, concerned that may be an ongoing safety issue with these vehicles. *nm
Dt: 2005 dodge durango. the dealership case number is: 4607005. when the consumer set the cruise control and was going down a hill, the vehicle will gain about 15 mph and the consumer would have to step on the brake to slow the vehicle down. the consumer took the vehicle to the dealer and they sent the information to the manufacturer, the dealer took the vehicle for a test drive and the manufacturer said that it was designed that way. so they said apply the brakes when necessary. the local dealer/chief mechanic said that this should not be like this. *jb *sc
