We have classified the 139 complaints from 2005 Dodge Durango about ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING into the following categories.
My 2005 durango has been shutting completely off while i am driving it. this has been going on for approximately one year intermittently. i have had it to the mechanics numerous times and they are unable to locate a problem. i fear for my safety and the safety others as i never know when my suv will shut off. i have found a website that other people have posted exactly the same complaint that i have concerning their dodge durango's. the link is http://www.carcomplaints.com/dodge/durango/1999/electrical/vehicle_shuts_down_without_warning.shtml. *tr
My 2005 dodge durango keeps "shutting off" while i'm driving. i am usually turning and going less than 20 mph when it shuts off. my radio stays when this occurs. i have to put it in park and turn it back on. it has done this since 2006 shortly after i purchased it. i have taken it to the dodge dealership where i purchased twice and have been told that nothing shows up wrong. they suggested the next time it does it, to leave it be and have it towed. umm, kinda difficult when i am in the road when it shuts off. *tr
Sludge build up due to improper venting of the oiling system. the engine is blown with only 80,000 miles. need to either replace the engine or have it rebuilt by a machine shop. *tr
While commuting this morning to work, i was approaching a stop light at approximately 35 mph, as i started to brake, i noticed my brakes were not working properly, at that point i realized my engine had shut off and i had lost my power brakes/power steering. as this has happened multiple times in the past with no warning - as it did this time, i knew i could put my engine into neutral and re-start my engine. luckily i was not in any sort of serious traffic and had plenty of room to get my vehicle to the side of the road to avoid any accidents. i have attempted to address this issue with the past with dodge and have had no success. this is a serious safety issue that needs to be addressed. *tr
I was driving my 05 dodge durango with my 2 year old in his carseat in the backseat and had just turned left into a parking lot, while in the parking lot the engine stalled (shut off) causing loss of power steering as well. coasted into a parking stall and was able to restart the engine. very unsafe and apparently very common in this year, make, and model. *tr
I have a 2005 dodge durango 5.7 hemi that my husband and i purchased at the end of may 2010. i have only had 5 months and after the first month it stalled on me. the first time it happened i was in a parking lot and went to start it and it wouldn't start. took 3 times until it did start and stay started. a month later it happened again only this time it shut off while i was driving with my husband and 3 kids. luckily i was on a back road and was only going 10 mph. so i was able to stop and restart it. it started up fine that time. the third time i was in another parking lot and it wouldn't stay started when i tried to start it. took another 3 times before it did. the last time it happened was today, october 22, 2010. i was on my way home from taking my kids to school and tried to turn to go up the hill to my street when i realized i couldn't turn or stop cause my vehicle cut off again and i lost complete control since i had no power steering or brakes. i almost went into the ditch but luckily was able to stop since i wasn't going very fast. this was my last straw since if i do wreck it will be my fault and i will have to pay for it since there is no recall out on this situation. i have had it looked at and no one knows what it wrong and thinks i am crazy since it can't be recreated. after seeing how this has been reported since 2005, as long as the gas tank has been reported and got recalled, that this isn't recalled. this is completely dangerous!!!! i have 3 kids and this can cause an accident and hurt someone or even possible kill someone!!! i don't want my kids to die before something gets done. i have reported this and called chrysler and reported it and i suggest everyone do the same! call 18009921997. if we can report this enough, maybe it will raise attention to someone to do something. i am fearful to drive this truck and even more fearful for my kids to be in it and it is suppose to be our family car. if i get in ...
For the fourth time in as many months, my 2005 dodge durango has completely lost power without warning. this past february, i had the dealer put in nearly $2000 worth of work in addition to fixing the recalled issues of the instrument cluster and fuel tank. the power loss happened after this and after having taken it back once to the dealer i will not take it to them again due to poor service. i have also had my local mechanic run a diagnostic test on the car, but nothing comes up. the car simply loses power and i am forced to try to steer it to the side of the road, put it in park, and start it up again. no "check engine" or other warning lights come on. i am now very concerned for my safety. this car is 5 years old, very well maintained, and has only 56,000 miles on it. if someone from nhtsa cares to check on the edmunds.com forum, they will note many similar complaints with the hemi 5.7 engine on the durango. i would like for the nhtsa to further investigate this dangerous situation. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2005 dodge durango. the vehicle stalled several times without warning. the vehicle was taken to a local mechanic who tested the battery and the alternator, but could not locate the failure. the vehicle will be taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing. the manufacturer will be contacted. the failure and the current mileages were 118,000.
The truck loses all power while driving and stalls. this happens at any given time in high traffic areas, low traffic areas and at all speeds. the check engine light comes on and stays on. the dealer states that it is the egr valve. this appears to be very common with this vehicle. *tr
Engine stalls without warning losing all power assisted control to vehicle. vehicle stall will occur at random times and during different driving maneuvers; turning left, stopping and driving straight. service/repair shop unable to duplicate problem in order to diagnose the very potentially dangerous hazard created by the defective vehicle. stalling occurred less frequently in the beginning but has increasingly become more often; approximately once a day. *tr
While driving at low speeds or slow turns the vehicle stalls. has happened on numerous occasions almost causing accidents. *tr
In march i had my 2005 durango in for the 2 recalls and additional routine maintenance was done at that time as well. it has 55,000 miles on it. this past saturday, it stalled without warning and without the check engine light coming on. i was able to start it back up. i took it to my mechanic. he ran a diagnostic scan as well as drove it, and nothing at all showed up. i am very fearful to drive this vehicle because of its sudden stalls. i see online that this appears to be an ongoing issue and would like for chrysler dodge to address this situation immediately. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 dodge durango. the contact was driving approximately 20 mph and the engine stalled without prior warning. the vehicle restarted and the contact was able to continue driving. the failure occurred intermittently. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for diagnostic testing; however, they were unable to detect a trouble code. the failure continued to occur. in addition, whenever refueling the vehicle to its fuel capacity level the automatic shut off feature failed to engage causing fuel to spew onto the ground. the manufacturer was made aware of the problem. the approximate failure mileage was 65,000. updated 01/04/12*lj a sensor was replaced. at a cost of $400. 00 updated 01/09/12
I bought my 05 durango with the 5.7 hemi v8 had no problems then a few months went by an started to notice the stalling problem took it to shops no problems so i went online to further investigate and i found similar complaints well today drew the straw was driving down the interstate 75mph an the [xxx] thing shut off no power no steering no nothing had my kids in the back seat as well... when is this company going to realize they have a major problem somewhere that is very very dangerous especially if it shuts off with no notice and has no power to slow the vehicle down an get out of harms way... and of course it cranks right back up but then shuts off again happens sometimes then weeks months can go by and it just does it again. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr
I was driving our 2005 dodge durango with our 2 young children in it. made a left turn, traveling at approx. 5-10 miles per hour when vehicle stalled without warning. no steering...no power braking...nothing. truck was able to restart immediately following the event. we took it to our mechanic who could find nothing wrong with the truck. after reading everyone else's complaints. i'm not surprised. i am terrified to drive this vehicle and will not put our children in it. current mileage is 66,000. what if this happens when i am in an intersection or merging onto the interstate? *tr
Whenever i am stopped or idling, my car will shut off by itself. the rpm gauge will jump up and down and the engine will rev by itself, while my foot is on the brake. the dashboard lights will flicker, then the car shuts off. the interior electrical is off but the running/outside lights are still on. the steering tightens up,but the brakes work. the car is able to be put in park, shut off and started right back up, so far. it normally only happens when going at slower speeds, or stopping and being idle. this has been happening for a few months, normally once a week, but this past weekend it has happened three times. we now don't leave town with this vehicle and i am actually scared to drive it just around town. i have kids and don't want something to happen while im driving at accelerated speed. according to all of the 100's of other complaints i have found, no one is able to figure out what is wrong, dealerships can't find a problem or codes. which has been my issue. plus, dodge doesn't want to do anything to help. i was told i shouldn't look on the internet for complaints. *tr
2005 dodge durango stalling while slowing down or accelerating from a stop. january 2010 dealer said they could not find anything wrong. happened again 4/8/2010. dealer replaced egr valve but could not guarantee that would fix the problem and to come back if it happens again. hopefully it does not happen again in traffic and i get killed or kill someone. i am afraid to drive this car. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2005 dodge durango. while driving approximately 35 mph, the engine stalled and overheated. the contact was unable to restart. three hours later, the contact tried to restart the vehicle; however, fluid was leaking from the engine compartment. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where the spark plugs were replaced. when the contact started the vehicle after it was repaired, the check engine light illuminated. the vehicle was taken back to the dealer but no repairs were made when the complaint was filed. the vin was unavailable. the failure mileage was approximately 95,000. the current mileage was unknown.
Our 2005 dodge durango with a 5.7 hemi engine shut itself off out of the blue while driving home. it is the third time it has happened in the last 3 months. driving speed was around 35 mph. it happened as we let up on the throttle. it does restart but it is very hard to stop and control when it happens. *tr
The vehicle stalls while driving, without warning the whole car just shuts off, leaving the driver with no steering, brakes, or control of the car.
I have a 2005 dodge durango slt with the 5.7l v8 hemi. i just purchased it used january 16th of 2010 with 80,000 miles on it. the vehicle has begun to stall (the steering locks up, brakes hard to push, engine cuts off) when making turns occasionally from the stopped position, or when accelerating. it varies as to when this happens, but it has happened to me 5 times since jan. 16th. the latest incident was yesterday (feb 1st) while making a turn off of rockport road onto highway 37 north in bloomington, indiana. the speed limit is 60 in this stretch of the highway, and as i was turning onto the highway the durango quit working. i immediately put it in park and started it back up and floored it in reverse to get back onto rockport road. i had given myself ample space to pull onto the highway to avoid traffic, however at those speeds, two vehicles had approached rather fast. this morning i did a little research into this problem at work, and i have found numerous complaints of the same issue. this is a serious safety concern and one that needs to be addressed immediately. the dealerships says the engines are going bad, the sensors need replaced. well i am here to tell you these are all lies. i work as a sales representative at the chrysler dodge jeep dealership in bloomington indiana, and our service department (the same as every single one in the us) diagnoses these problems "to the best of their ability", ability that is terrible in my eyes. they are there to make money of everyone (including me). they are paid on commission just like sales people. higher replacement means higher pay checks. feel free to contact me with any questions. here is the website i came across with more complaints as well http://www.aboutautomobile.com/complaint/2005/dodge/durango/engine+and+engine+cooling+system. i only started at this dealership 5 months ago and was told by my management that the durangos were great. i just don't want anyone getting injured because of this! *tr
Loss of power when getting on freeway. engine chugs, rough idle, no power to merge with traffic on freeway. check engine light came on. checked codes and found p0308 and p2099. changed all 8 spark plugs, plugs 4, 6, 8, 3, 5, and 7 show sings of setting in water. found out dodge has two service bulletins to keep this from occurring, sb 18-006-05 rev a and 18-024-06. do we need crashes on the freeway before we can force dodge to fix this on all 2004 and 2005 dodge durango with the 4.7 l engine. *tr
Started dodge durango 2005 and there was a very loud sound coming from the engine. took truck to mechanic and they are telling me that i need a new engine! it is not operative! metal shards were coming out of the oil. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 dodge durango. after starting the ignition she heard a loud knocking sound in the engine compartment. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for inspection. the technician detected metal circulating in the oil. he recommended that the engine be replaced. the vehicle was in the process of being inspected by an authorized dealer. the failure and current mileages were 80,000. the vin was unavailable.
I just purchased an 05' dodge durango with the 5.7 hemi motor. i have had the vehicle 1 month and it has just started stalling on me. very scary situation. it has happened at the exact same spot both times. i have researched this online and found a couple of forums where this apparently a major issue. i come to a stop at a red light , start to accelerate to make a right turn and lose all power. it has done this 2x in 1 month. please let me know if this problem has ever been diagnosed. *tr
Ticking sound and a exhaust smell in vehicle caused me to take my car to a local repair shop to have exhaust manifold gasket replaced. the technician found that a bolt had broken off a was sitting in the heat shield. *tr
When i am driving at slow mph or turning, my 2005 dodge durango stalls. i can turn the car off and then back on but i was almost hit the other day. i am extremely worried about my safety. *tr
On 4 occasions my vehicle has shut off while trying to turn on a intersection at a low speed. all fluids are in the correct levels and no fault lights appear. the vehicle does start normally after a second. the incidents are sporadic however are concerning because it could cause an accident. this appears to be a common issue with this type of vehicle an many have complained. the dealer can't do anything because they cannot recreate the problem and computer does not show fault code. i tried contacting dodge customer service about it but they are not willing to help.
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 dodge durango. while driving approximately 15 mph, the engine stalled with the illumination of the check engine warning indicator. the vehicle restarted and functioned normal. the failure was a continuous occurrence. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for inspection and they were unable to duplicate the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 60,000.
I have a 2005 dodge durango slt with a 5.7 hemi. problems with engine stalling. this has happened while stopped at a light/stop sign, pulling into/out of driveway/parking spots and most recently while driving approximately 30 mph. the stalling has happened about 15-20 times since owning this vehicle. almost total loss of steering and braking was not 100%. i have had it into a dodge dealer before for this problem and of course they've found nothing so no repairs have been made. this is very dangerous especially since i almost always have children in the car with me. *tr
05 dodge durango 5.7l v8 engine stalls during deceleration and turns with acceleration. extremely unsafe and happens frequently with loss of all power steering and power breaking. driving 60mph on freeway 331 engine stalled on lane merger causes several cars to severely break and the durango to run off the road in a ditch. the result was towing the vehicle to a dealership for repair. after vehicle was picked up we drove the vehicle 100miles at which time it stalled again causing another near fatal wreck with my wife and 3 small children present. this issue is a know problem with ddc however we were not aware of any stalling issues. i feel this needs to be fixed before someone is killed. i feel my family was put in danger over an issue that seems very common. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2005 dodge durango. while driving 70 mph, the vehicle began to lose power and eventually shut off. the vehicle was taken to the dealer and they stated that the engine had seized and needed to be replaced. the current and failure mileages were 100,000. updated 8/10/09 *cn updated 08/13/09. *jb
My 2005 durango stalls when slowing to a stop or slowing to turn. there is no warning, everything just stops. loss of powersteering makes the situation very unsettling and dangerous, especially when making an unprotected left turn in heavy traffic. i have had the vehicle for almost two years and have notice an increase in the number of stalls over the past few months. have not yet had the vehicle looked at due to the inability to consistently recreate the problem. *tr
I have had several occasions of my rpm accelerating and overdrive shifting. i have also read numerous amount of complaints pertaining to the same issues with other customers that have purchased a dodge durango as well. i have had the car inspected and there seems to be no problems. this is a problem and i think that this needs to be addressed. it can be dangerous on the highway with my car jerking and shifting going 70mph. i believe dodge has a error that they need to own up to. please contact me regarding this matter. *tr
My dodge 2005 slt, 4.8l (74,000 miles) has continued to stall at stop signs, traffic lights and when accelerating from a stop. i have had several things done(spark plugs, fuel additives, premium gas, fuel filter) to the car, but still continues. i am upset to see that there has been nothing done to correct this. it is obvious that there are many other dodge durango owners in the same situation with the same problem as i. *tr
Purchased a used 2005 dodge durango limited with the hemi. it has died multiple times at red lights with no warning and no pattern to the stalling. have called multiple dealerships who claim they have no prior experience with this problem. each time it has started up immediately but with a 7 month old baby i fear the consequences of continuing to drive this vehicle when no one seems to know what causes the problem and with an internet search have found that i'm not alone in having this problem. *tr
The car stalled when driving without any warning. the dashboard lights when very bright, and then the car stalled. i had to re-start it. thank goodness no one hit my car, i wasn't in an intersection or on the freeway (i commute every day on it with my child). we went to the local auto-mechanic. he said the ets valve needed to be replaced. we replaced it for $344.16 however, though he kept it and drove it, it didn't happen to him and he said it would be hard to be 100% sure it that was really the issue. it was his best answer. he couldn't understand why a car that only has 39k miles on it and is 4 years old would do this. *tr
I have a 2005 dodge durango slt. the vehicle has stalled on several occasions while driving approximately 5 to 15 mph. recently, i made a legal u-turn and the vehicle stalled halfway into the turn. because the car stalled, i was not able to continue with the full turn and i was sitting in the road with cars coming head on. i immediately put my car in park and started the car and put my foot on the gas and got out of immediate harms way. it is truly a miracle that i was not hit by a vehicle head on where cars were coming at me at approximately 45 mph. there needs to be a recall before someone dies if it hasn't happen already. if something happens to me while i am driving this vehicle this is my proof of trying to get a recall for a very serious malfunction. this issue needs to be investigated with great care and quickly. i was shocked to see how many hundreds of thousands of other dodge durango owners who are complaining about the same incident. please, please help. this is very scary and i am truly scared to drive this vehicle. i am terrified that the vehicle is going to stall on the highway or in front of a school bus or truck, possibly causing more fatalities. *tr
My durango engine shuts off while driving down the road with no warning. once it shuts off i totally loose all power steering/power brakes. it happens totally at random, sometimes it will happen multiple times a day, sometimes it will go months in between incidents. no accidents have occurred as of yet, but there have been many near misses, especially when driving on windy roads, when lack of power steering is a serious issue. i've taken it to the dealer who has stated that due to the randomness of the issue, they would have to keep it, charging me $80.00/hour trying to even replicate the issue, no codes were able to be found. after research on the web, this is not just an issue with my dodge, but has happened to many other people. the first time it happened was around 40,000 on my vehicle, outside of warranty. once the vehicle shuts off, i am able to put it into neutral and it will start back up fine as if nothing was wrong. *tr
My vehicle keeps stalling on the road. i have small kids and a scared to death!!! *tr
My 2005 dodge durango stalls at low speeds. sometimes it happens during idle and other times it happens when i slow down to turn. it has happened the entire life of the car and no dealership has been able to diagnose or fix the problem. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2005 dodge durango. while driving approximately 55 mph, the engine shut off unexpectedly. prior to the failure, the warning lights illuminated on the instrument panel. the vehicle was unable to be restarted and was towed to the contact's residence. the vehicle has not been repaired. the contact was concerned of the safety risk involved. the vin was unknown. the failure and current mileages were 89,000.
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 dodge durango. while driving approximately 55 mph, the check engine light illuminated. the vehicle was taken into the dealer where the technicians replaced the egr valve. the check engine light continued to illuminate intermittently. the vehicle was taken to the dealer a second time where the technicians were unable to diagnose the failure. the contact took the vehicle to a different dealer where there were several repairs made. the vehicle continued to experience the failure. while driving approximately 55 mph, the contact noticed the interior of the vehicle felt hot and there was smoke inside the vehicle. the contact pulled over to the side of the road. the contact waited for the vehicle to cool down and drove to the dealer. the technicians noticed the wiring harness and the intake manifold had melted. the technicians replaced the lifters, wiring harness, intake manifold and the oxygen sensor. after the repairs were made, the check engine light continued to illuminate. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 72,000.
2005 dodge durango with 5.7 hemi stalled several times causing steering and brakes to fail. it started immediately after. is sluggish and lurches before stalling. *tr
I was pulling out of work when my car stalled after i stopped and made a left hand turn ... immediately upon turning, my car stalled & would not start up. i tried to start the car for about 15 minutes because this event happen a prior time & started up immediately the first time it happened. i had to push my car by myself out of the road (2005 dodge durango hemi v8) which is rather heavy and it was a very hot day. after pushing my car to the parking lot again, it started. my car stalled again after i was leaving work at a stop sign 1 block away but started in about 2 minutes. *tr
1-2 possible concerns- #1- (5.7 v.8 engine issue) as many others have complained the vehicle stalls and quits on sudden stops, and when making turn. after the engine shuts off - it can be restarted - but no engine code is generated. the dealer does not know the specific cause, but cites numerous things that it can be - wanting me to spend $$ to investigate each one and replace parts. the service department is not aware of any issues with the durango and engine stall. the issue is unpredictable and nearly impossible to duplicate - even though it has happened a dozen or so times in the last 2 years. on several of this occasions i (and my family of 5) have been placed in life threatening situations and i have had issues with controlling the vehicle due to a loss of power steering and brake control. this issue may be related to the next complaint. it seems strange that this on many occasions happens right after a fill up. and - even though my vin was recalled in 2005 and fixed - gas still sprays out the fuel filler and any gas station when you fill the vehicle up fully. to get around this - my vehicle cannot be filled all the way up. this issue is easy to duplicate - but my dealer states that the work done in 2005 should have fixed this and that any other issue are not a warranty/recall issues. again - the dealer wants to charge me $$ to test and try to find an answer since according to them this problem has already been fixed.
I have a 2005 dodge durango and it keeps stalling and shut down. everytime i slow down and go into reverse the car shuts off. the rpm goes crazy, sometimes, then the car shuts off. the dealership has yet to figure out what's wrong with it. i have gone back and forth with them and they can't tell me what's wrong with the car. they have fixed so many sensors they can't get it right. car keeps stalling either way. i need a solution. this is a deadly situation waiting to happen. *tr
My 2005 dodge durango suv has been experiencing engine stalling while driving for the past 6 months. it always happens while it is being driven in rainy or wet conditions. it happened the first time in november 2007 on regular surface streets while it was raining and my wife was driving straight ahead. the vehicle stalled and she was unable to re-start it for over 2 minutes in normal traffic conditions. the second time on or about 3/11/08 my wife was turning right at an intersection in rainy conditions and the engine stalled mid turn and she was unable to re-start the engine for over 2 minutes in normal traffic conditions. the third time occurred 5/6/08 on regular surface streets driving straight ahead in rainy conditions and the vehicle stalled and was unable to be re-started for at least 2 minutes. all 3 occurrences involved loss of control of the vehicle due to the loss of power steering and power brake controls while our children were present in the vehicle. i took the vehicle in to allan samuels dodge in alliance texas after the 2nd incident for warranty covered diagnosis and they informed me after having the vehicle overnight for a full day that they did not find anything wrong with it. i took it back to them after the 3rd incident and after having it for 2 full days they are still advising me that they can not find a problem with the vehicle and are not recommending any course of action to correct it. no parts have been replaced or repaired on the vehicle to my knowledge according to the service receipts given to me. i believe they are simply hooking up the ecm scanner and looking for failure codes, of which both times i took it in i was told there were none present. in my opinion right now, nothing has been done to correct the problem with my vehicle and i am very concerned about the safety of this vehicle and my wife and children inside of it. *tr
Manifold bolt broke on my 2005 dodge durango. exhaust smell in vehicle. *tr
2005 dodge durango with 5.7 hemi engine will shut off without warning while driving. does not throw a code so the dealer can't find the problem. most times it will re-start but sometimes takes several attempts before restarting. sometimes it happens more than once a day, sometimes a couple of times a week....need help to get dodge/chrysler to do something about the problem. bought new in 2005 and didn't start having trouble until 2008. *tr
