4 times in the last two weeks while driving in heavy city traffic in the los angeles, ca area the engine turned off, without warning, warning lights, or warning sounds. all guages went to zero. there was no abnormal function of the vehicle before each incident. power assist to steering and brakes were also lost. each time it was in dry, sunny weather with the temperature between 60 and 80 degrees fahrenheit. each time i was able to coast to a curb or physically push the vehicle out of traffic. each time, except one, the engine would not start immediately afterward. the engine would turn over briskly but would not start. after 4 to 6 attempts the car would start normally and then run normally as if nothing had ever happened. each time the gasoline tank was at least one quarter full. two additional times in the last two months the engine shut off while driving and then almost immediately turned back on again. the transmission was completely rebuilt 5 months ago. this had the potential to cause a crash but did not in each of the instances.

My steering is bad i have little control over vehicle at high speeds i think it's in the wheel itself or maybe airbags?. replaced brake parts front and back and still problems with trying to stop but skid .hub replaced and its better. head lights do not work properly

While driving at various times on the highways my car shuts down and i lose steering and power brakes which makes it hard to slow down and move to side of road. after 10 to 15 min l can restart my car.

Usually happens when it is hot out but the truck just shuts off with out notice all power too all gauges go to 0 power steering. does not matter how fast or slow i am going. i have to park it and let it sit anywhere from 5 minutes up to two hours. i have had several parts replaced and the problem continues no one seems to have an answer. this is so dangerous not only for me but also all other drivers on the road. this needs to be figured out soon i fear for my life and the life of others.

Nut came off left front wheel bearing causing wheel to come off vehicle. when picking up pieces, i noticed that there is no cotter key to keep the nut from backing off. had this happened at higher speeds, the result would have been very serious.

The vehicle is hard to steer it also has a problem disengaging the 4 wheel drive the vehicle's tires in the front rub against the wheel wells causing uneven tread wear the vehicle is deemed unsafe also due to the vehicle's suspension bushings in the front in the tie rods in the front of the vehicle are loose causing a over compensation and under compensation for steering possibly resulting in fatality ultimately due to a bad lane change forcing the vehicle to collide with another vehicle ending up ultimately in fatality.

Cpsc: i1480047a. 2009 dodge durango steering shaft. consumer stated after about three week of driving with the new part on, the nut became loose and the shaft separated while he was driving, causing his to lose control. *ln

Tl* the contact owns a 1999 dodge durango. while driving at 55 mph, the steering wheel veered to the left and right and became difficult to maneuver. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was unknown.

I was driving about 25 miles per hour and everything on the system stopped. the steering stopped working, the brakes stopped working and the car turned off. it tends to happen on bumpy roads. this has happened multiple times in my 1999 dodge durango during the past year. i think it might be related to the ignition problem affecting other chrysler products. the durango was not involved in that recall, but it seems as though this is exactly what happens with my truck. *tr

While driving vehicle into a parking spot i heard some very noticeable clicking while making a slight turn then a loud noise kinda like metal dropping on to the street from front end then i experience total loss of steering of my durango. the vehicle continued to run, i was unable to steer at all. i examined under the hood i discovered the belt drive came off. i a ran the belt back around all of the components the vehicle again starts but i cant turn the wheel at all.... not happy! *tr

On multiple occasions, beginning two months after we bought the vehicle (used), engine would die for no reason. loss of power steering and power brakes. would turn over, but not restart. after waiting between 10-30 minutes, vehicle would restart. happens at slow speeds, medium speeds and expressway speeds. inconvenient at slow speeds, very dangerous at highway speeds. sounds similar to other complaints regarding cpu/cpm overheating. dodge needs to recall this before someone gets killed! *tr

I was driving on the highway at 65mph, and the vehicle shut off completely. lost power steering, power brakes, everything. had 3 small children in the car and had to with all my power (i am 5'9" 235 lbs) navigate the vehicle to the side of the road. i have found this is extremely common problem with this vehicle. many of the posts state is a manufacturing flaw of where the pcm is placed in the engine. *tr

Recently purchased this vehicle in great shape inside and out, runs great..the dealer did the state inspection on it and replaced both side upper and lower ball joints and the right front hub/wheel bearing.now 3 weeks later upper and lower ball join on one side need to be replaced again..this is ridiculous, i have researched and seen all the complaints pertaining to this problem and am dumb founded nothing has been done about it. i just bought it so don't have any information for prior owners. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 1999 dodge durango. while the contact was driving at various speeds she noticed the vehicle would suddenly stall without warning. the failure was not diagnosed nor was the vehicle repaired. the current and failure mileage was 120000. updated 06/05/12*lj updated 06/07/12 *js

Control arms upper defective on dodge durango 4x4 makes loud popping sound loss of steering control, had to replace both upper control arms left and right and replace all ball joints due to what looks like shredding and shearing. *tr

The passenger side steering knuckle in my 99 dodge durango slt 5.9l v8 magnum failed at the steering knuckle caliper pin holes possibly due the threads in the overly soft metal being easily over torqued. once one pin failed the other failed shortly after resulting in a caliper freely moving along the rotor damaging the wheel and possible warping the rotor. apparently there is a "known" issue with these steering knuckles i believe they were also put in dodge dakotas. i'm not entirely sure of the year span they were manufactured and installed. i've been asking around online, chrysler, and my local dealer and i've been unable to find out of these parts are s till being manufactured the same. the website i did find that had them sent me this "the replacement that we sell will be exactly like the one from factory" which leads me to believe there hasn't been any corrections made and that the new parts could fail just like the old ones. *tr

Car auto-stopped while conducting driving lesson for my 15-year-old stepdaughter. we were traveling 40mph on a country road at the time. she drifted off the side of the road, said the steering wheel was stuck. i told her to apply the brakes. she said she was and they weren't working either. we went through a stop sign and were very nearly t-boned by cars from both directions. my stepdaughter sensibly did as i instructed and pushed as hard as possible on the brake, managed to stop the car before plunging into the river in front of us. i had been having problems with the car for six months previous to this incident. two diagnostics reported that the vehicle was auto-stopping but not why this was occurring. a local mechanic suggested it was probably the gas gauge sensor in the fuel pump which made sense to me because everything but the gas gauge worked whenever the car auto-stopped. it would typically restart within 15 minutes or so. i assumed we had solved the problem when the mechanic replaced the fuel pump. i know now that the fuel pump was not the problem although i don't know what is wrong with the car. i have researched this on the internet and found there are hundreds of other people going through the same difficulties with 1999 dodge durangos. my wife, stepdaughter and i were very lucky not to have been seriously injured during the driving lesson. this situation needs to be addressed before someone is hurt (if they haven't been already). *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 1999 dodge durango. the contact stated that while driving at low speeds, she attempted to make a turn and the vehicle independently wandered out of the lane. the contact was able to regain control of the vehicle and continue driving. the failure recurred whenever the contact was traveling in rainy weather. a certified mechanic inspected the vehicle however, the diagnosis was not provided to the contact. in addition, the transmission failed to shift out of gear properly. the manufacturer was notified of the problem. the approximate failure mileage was 130,000. updated 01/09/15*lj the consumer stated the pcm was replaced and the transmission shifts. driving in the rain proved to hazardous especially when braking or turning. updated 6/2/2015 *js

Tl*the contact owns a 1999 dodge durango. the contact stated that the vehicle had stopping issues. while driving 70 mph, the vehicle stopped without warning. there was a loss of all electrical components, power steering, and abs. she had to pour cold water on the computer in order for the vehicle to restart and was almost struck by a semi-truck in the process. the contact was concerned for her safety and her life. the manufacturer would not assume any liability for the failures. a dodge specialist stated that this was a frequent issue. the current and failure mileages were less than 170,000.

Steering problems related to linkage affected by brake resivoir leakage onto linkage to the gear box. fluid ate rubber off of the "joints" that look to be like that of a "u-joint." the first time was a safety issue involving an "oversteer" situation and the underlying condition was not explained or repaired. the linkage was replaced. one year or so later the durango began to repeat the above situation on an interstate highway at speeds of over 65 miles per hour. again the linkage was replaced and the master cylinder {not including the resivoir} was replaced at my expense due to the age of my vehicle {or lack of warranty}. the problem still exsists because i have no job to pay for repairs or a different vehicle. i have replaced linkage x2 and master cylinder for this situation, also had axel hubs {sealed units} fail due to dry bearing, both sides front. oem replacement parts both failed due to dry bearings in less than 12 months. this also caused a dangerous condition at highway speeds. wobble and oversteering conditions. prior to these problems the rear sway bar links had disintegrated and were replaced. this vehicle has done no off road 4x4 action for as long as i have owned it. thank you !!

I was approaching a red light and when i used the brakes my vehicle went over into the right lane, without warning. it didn't swerve or pull, it went!!! there was a vehicle in the right lane and if the driver had not paid attention, i would have hit that vehicle. i had to quickly turn the wheel to the left to regain control of vehicle and consequently ended up running the red light. luckily, i was not killed at that intersection and the driver in the right lane was not hurt, trying to swerve and get out of my way. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 1999 dodge durango. while making a right turn at 10-20 mph, the contact heard a clunking noise. the dealer was unable to diagnose the cause of failure. the current mileage was 78,000 and failure mileage was 70,000.

1999 dodge durango with steering problems customer states that the car on many occasions has had problems with the steering box**cc the consumer stated on the date he purchased the vehicle he informed the dealer of the loose steering defect and was quoted a price of $2,167 to accomplish the repairs and was told that the vehicle would have all new components. the consumer stated the steering boxes were replaced a total of 3 times but to no avail. the consumer further stated the vehicle pulls to the left and drifts both ways but was informed by the dealer the alignment was fine. the consumer stated the foreman suspected the problem to be a flat spot on the front tire. the consumer stated the dealer test drove the vehicle and discovered the left and right upper arms needed to be replaced at the sum of $1,000. the consumer stated he does not believe the vehicle is safe. *tr

I purchased a 1999 dodge durango from a private dealer last year. not long after the purchase, while driving the vehicle down the road at about 50 mph, the engine shut off...barely any brakes, unable to steer. this happened several times after that, eventually leading to me not driving it anymore. while researching what was wrong with the vehicle, i came across many other people with the same problem, same make, year and model vehicle. many were reporting their "close calls" with mva's due to the engine just shutting off and them losing control of the vehicle. this is obviously a wide spread and dangerous problem, that thus far, dodge has failed to recall. i, as well as many others, do not have the money to put in to the vehicle for computer changes and uncertain mechanical work to get our vehicles in safe operating condition. i believe it's time that dodge do a recall and fix this dangerous problem. *tr

Tl* - the contact owns a 1999 dodge durango. the mechanic stated that they were unable to authorize an alignment on the vehicle until the upper and lower ball joints had been replaced. the contact had no warning that there was a recall on the upper and lower ball joints. according to the repair shop this failure occurs frequently with dodge durango's. the contact is aware of the safety risk involved while driving the vehicle. *jb the dealer also replaced the inner tie rod ends. the consumer provided the invoice for service performed on vehicle. updated 05/21/07*tr

I have a 99 dodge durango 4x4 with a 5.9l engine and i continually have to replace the front tires due to excessive wear from the inside tread. i went to get a front alignment and the establishment told me that i would have to replace all the ball joints and steering rods to be able to do an alignment. these have to be defective since i know people with the same issues that i have. i have not repaired the problem since it is a expensive problem to fix. *nm

Tl* - the contact has a 1999 dodge durango and complained about two ball joint failures. at 50013 miles contact had to take the vehicle to his local dealership who replaced the lower right ball joint. at 92000 contact took vehicle to zrubek's for a front end alignment and the repair shop stated to the contact that they had to replace the two upper ball joints, and two inner tie rods. *ak updated 1/29/2007 - *nm

I have a 1999 dodge durango and i am having crazy steering problems. ball joints and tie rods are gone. i have seen recall on 2000- but why no 1999. same truck, same problem and i know i am not the only one. *nm

I own a 1999 durango and a 2001 dakota both have loose intermediate shafts. the steering is very loose in both trucks. i spoke with many owners of these types of trucks and all have the same problem may cause a serious accident when someone looses steering going 55 mph i think we should make this problem known before somebody gets in an accident and gets someone killed. *tr

There was a noise coming from the front end of the vehicle at various speeds and tire wear was abnormal. i took the vehicle to an independent repair shop. upon initial inspection, the upper and lower control arm ball joints were loose and needed to be replaced on both sides. the inner tie rods also had to be changed due to the loose ball joints. the total cost of repairs, even with my military discount was $950. the vehicle had only 65298 miles on the odometer when it was taken to the shop. luckily i noticed the problem before the ball joints separated and caused an accident. this problem put my life and my family's life in harms way. 1999 durangos should have been a part of the recall on ball joints. there is a nhtsa recall campaign id # 04v596000 regarding the upper ball joints. the vehicle has the same problems as indicated in the recall. however it is not included in the recall due to the vin. My 1999 dodge durango failed inspection due to failing upper and lower ball joints on both sides of the vehicle. in addition, the failure of the ball joints led to the failure of the outer tie rods on both sides. the inspector advised me to not drive the vehicle until the repairs were made due to their potential to cause a serious accident. *nm

Defective joints & tie rods, faulty oil pump, transmission shifting problems, faulty water pump, bad rotors. *nm

Dt: the contact stated while driving heard a knock in the engine. a local mechanic found the engine threw a rod. as a result, it needed a new engine, tie rod, and serpentine belt. the vehicle was taken to a dealership, and they state it needed a new rod and crankshaft. the manufacturer instructed the dealership to take the engine apart to locate the internal problems. this has not been done at this time, and no repairs have been made. *ak

while driving less than 600 from my house in my 1999 green dodge durango 4 door the power steering went out causing an accident with a parked car. i had the car had to be towed to the dodge dealership in warren michigan i was told that the power steering seal blew causing the loss of power assist steering. the loss of this type of failure as you know makes driving harder that a car without power steering at all. i ask the dealership to have dcc look into the cause of this failure which cause the accident without any prior leaks or loss of fluid. the investigation letter stated that a vehicle that was built june 23, 1999 and had 66,006 miles would have these kinds of failures. the vehicle was inspected less than 3000 miles prior when it was taken in for air conditioning core issues. the dealership did an inspection and found other leaks but did not find issue with the power steering pump. i have looked all around the vehicle and operator's manual which does not have this information that steering can be hampered when the vehicle is older than 50k miles. the cost of the work to get he suspension , ball joints, tie rods , control arms, you name it will be just less than $5,000 dollars. does dcc know people could be injured or killed by these kind of problems. i hope this will not go on unfound ears. keep up the good work!!!!! stacy scicluna, warren michigan 586-757-7947 . *nm

1999 dodge durango major front suspension issues - fails state safety check- see numerous discussions on the web is the an engineering analysis underway? bad need repair: both lower ball joints, 1 upper ball joint, both inside tie rods. *jb

Replacement of worn front end suspension ball joints and tie rod end was necessary due to defective design. *nm

Brought 99 durang. in for front end alig. was told $ 1600 in repairs needed, guess what? yup, upperand lower ball joints, inner control rods and shocks, well the shocks seem fine but the rest is a mess, called dealer ira dodge, and they said only recall was for a 2000 and up.i asked if it was nomal for all four ball joints to go at 64k(it could have been earlier i need new tires at the time inner wheel was wearing) he said no.. oh well right, this is ridiculous.checked part nums at local parts place(autozone) for all said above ,$259.that included new shocks, better ones too.ill never buy a dodge again.and ill never go to firestone tires

Started with rebuilt transmission, then sludged in motor. had to replace motor with only 120,000 miles motor and transmission 5,000. also had to replace ball joints, tie rods and bearings cost $1,000*ak

Upper and lower ball joints, tie rod,and shocks replaced at 45,000 miles. *ak

A loud squeaking noise started coming from the front and rear of the vehicle. also, driver noticed that the tires had uneven wear on the inner side. driver took vehicle to the dealer for inspection, and mechanic determined that both left and right upper and lower ball joints, and all four tires needed to be replaced. *ak. defective ball joints caused vehicle to wander on its own, and float from side to side. also, replaced both inner tie rods. *ak

While driving and upon backing out of the driveway the tire disengaged. the tie rod, and ball joints failed. consumer had the vehicle repaired. consumer heard of recall campaign 04v596000 concerning ball joint wear. consumer contacted the dealer, and was advised that the 1999 models were not included. *ak

Consumer reported two incidents. first incident involved vehicle experiencing a thumping noise when accelerating from a stop position. vehicle had been to the dealer, and dealer replaced the front wheel bearing. the second incident involved vehicle losing steering control while driving 35 mph. this almost caused a tractor trailer crashing into consumer's vehicle. the vehicle was taken back to the dealer, but problem recurred. *ak

Lost total control of steering on an interstate highway going 65 mph. steering wheel did not control the tires. i am told the steering slip joint contracted . the consequencys of this injury could have resulted in death of myself and family members.luckly it did not.. i am saving the part if dodge wants to inspect it. i was never so horrified in my life as i did not have control of my diving situation. i would expect chrysler to pay for the repair and fix the part /inspect the ball joints . *ak

In november 2003, my wife had a blowout while driving our 1999 dodge durango on the highway. this was just after four new tires had been put on the durango. the service center stated that the blowout was a result of problems with the ball joints and tie rods. then in approximately novmeber, 2004 we had to have major repair of the front axle. in january, 2005 the durango required replacement of the front ball joints, tie rods, two new tires and alignment. this after the same parts had been replaced just 14 months earlier. i do not have the parts that were replaced. *jb

When trying to start vehicle it fails or it starts and dies. it has also stalled when driving several times, locking up the power steering, almost causing accidents.*ak

Consumer was coming out of the driveway and going to the corner, while making a left turn , the left wheel tie rod snapped out of position causing the vehicle to slump to the ground. consumer pushed the vehicle to the curb, and called a tow truck. provide further details. *ak

My durango has already had a front tie rod replaced and possibly ball joint(s)? it has always had loose steering issues. recently i brought it in for brake work and it was diagnosed as needing new balls joints and possibly additional tie-rod work? the truck has only 59,000 miles. *jb
