We have classified the 5 complaints from 1999 Dodge Caravan about POWER TRAIN into the following categories.
While driving 60 mph vehicle lost all gears. dealer determined linkage between shifter and cable to clutch had broken and needed to be replaced.*ak
Consumer states his 3 year old pulled down on the fear shift and hit another vehicle, this vehicle was not designed with the safety feature, which would allow you to first place foot on the brake before removing out of gear.*yh
The transmission failed causing the vehicle to jerk and not go into gear. nlm
My 4 year old son was in van. he was in front seat and for some reason he pulled on the column to put it in drive. the keys were not in the ignition. he is not tall enough to reach the brake pedal. whenever he pulled the handle the van went from park to neutral and rolled appr. 60feet into the neighbors motor home. there was damage to my bumper and to the tailgate and the quarter panel. the motorhome also had fender damage. i currently have the vehicle at the bob allen dealership in danville ky. they are waiting for a chrysler rep. to come and view the van. the dealership has said that the whole steering column is defective. all of the components are there but not working. i feel that chrysler should repair this vehicle at their cost because i feel that this is a major safety issue.*ak
While driving at 35 mph consumer heard a loud clunking sound and the speedometer dropped to zero. also, vehicle would not go out of first gear. dealer examined the vehicle, and found that the transmission sensor was burned out. this problem occurred again in december 2003, and the dealer repaired the sensor again.*ak
The transmission has gone out on my 1999 dodge caravan twice. the first time was at 35908 miles and only 17 months old. it was the speed sensor. the second time was at 40,100 miles and less than 20 months old. i was told the torque converter came aprart!! this transmission had to be replaced and was not covered by dodge because it was outside of the 36,000 manufacturers warranty. i have had numerous problems with this less than 2 year old car, but the most worrisome has been the transmission failures because they have occured while my wife was driving alone and in heavy traffic, leaving her stranded. *ak
Whenever trying to put vehicle into gear vehicle will, without notice, accelerate even while conusmer has foot on the brake. ak interlock system was never installed on vehicle, consumer states he can move the gear lever at any time. *slc

Transmission failed twice during the warranty period. dealer informed me of unknown cause of the problems (transmission sensor) to go bad twice, but was happy to replace it for free (suspicious, nobody does this for free unless there is a problem). notified dodge since it was nearing the end of waranty and filed a complaint.*ak
While driving at approximately 25 to 30 mph, a noise was emitted from front of vehicle, as if the vehicle had started dragging a metal can. shortly afterwards vehicle lost all power. after inspection of problem, a puddle of transmission fluid began forming under vehicle. dealership stated that a pin in differential broke, which ruined transmission. please provide any additional information/attachments.*ak

At 15,000 mile check i requested the transmission be checked, it felt as though it may be slipping. service department found nothing wrong at that time. transmission has to be totally replaced in 1999 caravan with only 43000 miles on it. we have never towed anything with the van and are shocked that it needs a new transmission with so few miles on it. surely there must be a defect in the transmission for it to have gone out so soon after the warranty expired. *ak
Transmission went out on our 1999 dodge caravan while traveling 50-60 mph in a remote area. this is the second transmission problem i have had with this car. the first was a sensor that went bad, and now the entire transmission had to be replaced. the van has been with the dealer for 5 days.*ak

Speed sensors have failed 3 times in the last 12 weeks causing the transmission to shift erratically and violently. all dash gauges also go dead intermittently. vehicle has been in the shop a total of 5 times in this same timeframe. (july 21- oct 16) chrysler has been contacted but refuses to do anything further till the vehicle breaks again. (chrysler file # 7858395)

Frame is bent/ rear axle is off by 30 degree, and transmission is going out, causing the vehicle to stall.there is a loud knocking noise coming from the vehicle. also, rear tailgate will not open. dealer can't determine the cause. *ak
The air compressor can be heard every 3 to 5 seconds while the vehichle is being driven. it started at 200 miles the dealership wont even look at it, they just keep saying its normal. an independant said that it should not make that much noise. you can also hear when the compressor door opens and closes and turn it on and off. the brakes make a knocking noise when you apply them in slower traffic. the transmission slips in traffic around 40 to 50 mph and then when you begin to accelerate again. *ak

The speedometer in my dodge van flicks on and off, on and off. much of the time while driving, i don't know how fast i am going. and the on/off behavoir is very distracting. it always draws my attention from the road. this vehicle is dangerous. i am trying to work with dodge to make repairs, or to repurchase the vehcile, but dodge is very uncooperative. repeated warranty service has not succeeded. my complaint letter to chyrsler coroporation went unanswered for two months. finally the zone manager, myron abbott, called but this was useless. i have tried to get more help, or a repurchase from mr. abbott, but he avoids me now. always he will 'check and call right back.' but he doesn't. *ak
