2003 pt cruiser gt 2.4l 96k miles started to notice tire tread problems at 40k. thought it was a bad alignment from ntb and they did another alignment for now charge. 10k later and i am having tires replaced again! also hear alignment problems and knocking coming from the front end. took it in and service tech recommended alignment and front driver side bearing be replaced. he add the bushings on the driver side control arm was going bad but not necessary for immediate replacement. i had the front bearing replaced and alignment done. front drivers side bearing went bad again but on both sides in the front at 88k. now i am being told from the chrylser dealer that hub and bearing in the front on both sides need to be replaced. 600 bucks. just spent 500 on new tires and i still hear knocking on control arm. long story short....the lower control arms will need to be replace on both sides (front), followed by hub and bearing on both sides (front), followed by an alignment of the vehicle. doing research online, there are hundreds of specific complaints dealing with the control arm bushings and/or bearings going bad at 15,000 miles and up on the 03 gt pt cruiser 2.4l. chrysler does nothing for the consumer in every case hence the complaints to forums and nhtsa.gov. to say the least, this should be addressed daimler chrysler and fixed by their expense. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2003 chrysler pt cruiser. after purchasing the vehicle the brakes began squeaking. the contact was told that the brakes would be replaced before she bought the vehicle. when she arrived to pick up the vehicle she was informed the dealer that the brakes were still squeaking. the dealer stated that it would take two to three days before the brakes would stop squeaking. however, the failure continued. a few days later the contact returned to the dealer the tires were removed and orange dust was found on the brakes. the dealer cleaned the brakes, but never replaced them. three weeks after purchasing the vehicle the contact had the air conditioning repaired because it would not blow cool air. in august 2006 the vehicle began running hot and failed while driving 58 mph. the vehicle was towed, and shortly thereafter the failure recurred and the vehicle was towed again. in september 2006 the engine was replaced. on april 19, 2007, a diagnostic test was performed on the vehicle because of steering failure. the contact was told that the steering wheel needed immediate attention because steering fluid was leaking into the bottom of the car and could cause a fire. she was informed that the engine that was installed in september 2006 failed. the contact did not provide an accurate vin. the current mileage is 50,400, and failure mileage was 35,326. *ak the consumer stated she went to the dealership to have the car repaired and they were rude and refused to help her. later, the dealership asked for information to rent the consumer a car and the rental place refused to rent her a car if the vehicle was not fixed by smith chrysler. the consumer stated the dealer sold her a car then changed the name on her paperwork, refused to give her the tags to the car unless payment was provided and told her she had the wrong vin number for the car. the consumer stated wants her money back for the car and the dealer to take the car back. updated 07/06/07 *tr

My 2003 chrysler pt cruiser, gt model, has had problems since i have had it. first, the engine light came on and they replaced a hose, then it came on again, and they said they didn't know what was wrong with, and they would have to wait until it went completely out. it did, at 28,000 miles, it was the turbo charger. secondly, the airbag malfunctioned, they had to replace the seat, took three times to get the right seat. third, now, i would put the car in drive or reverse, and it just sit there, then jerks into gear. sometimes if you give it gas it would just rev up. they said it was the pump in the transmission, they took 4 plus days to replace it. when i picked it up i heard a noise and smell something burning. when i took it out there they didn't hear or smell anything so i was sent on my way. then it started doing the same thing it did when you put it in reverse or drive. i took it in, he said it needed a battery. i put a diehard battery in it, but sears said that was not the problem. then the check the engine light came on, they said it was the evac pump. they fixed that. they claimed that was not covered under the warranty i had when i brought it in two weeks before. now, i hear a grinding when i start the car up, someone said it sounds like the flywheel and they didn't assemble the transmission correctly, and that was probably where the burning smell was coming from. i am taking it in to the shop today for this. *nm

The air conditioner began malfunctioning. the car, a 2003 pt cruiser with approximately 38,000 miles, was just out of warranty. it was the middle of the hot summer, and instead of taking the car across town to a dealer, i took the car to a local mechanic, who determined that the low speed on the fan relay had gone bad. he told me the part was on national back order, and they were replacing about 300 per week. this is a high number, plus this part shouldn't fail with this many miles in my opinion. i spend $500 total to replace it (labor, diagnostics, and part). i contacted chrysler, who was sympathetic, but after sending them the original copy of the invoice, they told me they couldn't pay for it since it wasn't done at their dealership. i believe a recall is in order to prevent the same thing happening to other consumers. *jb

The local dealer thought that the sound from the engine was that the turbo was blown. after 2.5 weeks they then determined that the transmission pump had gone bad along with some sort of sensors. so then for the next 2 weeks plus they worked on that problem. four days laterafter getting the car back, the front axle fell off the car!!!!! if i would have been on the freeway or traveling on a surface street, i or possibly others could have been killed and the manufacturer will only repair under warranty???!! i've now been waiting another 2.4 weeks for the car and i try telling them that it is unsafe and i'm afraid to get back into the car. it has 7,777 mile on a chrysler pt cruiser 2003. it has spent almost 8 weeks of it's short life in repair shop for one thing or another, and no one at chrysler will listen or help, they keep saying the dm has made his decision, yeah with the service manager covering up for his mechanic. the mechanic admitted to me that he over tighten the bolts when he put my front end back together, and never even apologized for the oversight!!! if possible, i know the records don't really show all the work performed or a list of any parts replaced (at least not on my copies anyway), but could someone help me, please!!!??? thank you for your time pastor jim jaros ps i keep telling them (chrysler in auburn hill, mi 800-992-1997) that their name and reputation are the most important things you have, and they tell me that i'll have to sue through the lemon law in my state. yeah, i'm believin' i'm gonna stay alive to talk see that through, but i'm going to be parking that pt cruiser if and when it's ready!!! would you put your wife and family in this car? the mechanic or the service underwriter just walk away and the service manager still has not returned my phone calls, i'm forced to call through chrysler in mi to get the answers. i will ask them to save the parts if possible?*ak

Odor or smell in a/c system. dealer tells us that it is mold and there is nothing that can be done. *ak

Vehicle is a new 2003 pt-turbo gt w/auto stick, air, etc. vehicle is the very first new vehicle that my wife has ever owned. i bought it for her as a xmas gift in dec., 2002. since february 2003, the vehicle continues to overheat. it has had numerous parts replaced from theromstat/cooling fan and its theromstat switch, trans-cooler (turbo), water pump, etc. vehicle has been in the shop for almost 11 weeks. both the zone and the manufacturer has been contacted by dealership, and they responded on previous trips into the service bay. my wife actually was able to drive it for almost 5 1/2 weeks after receiving the vehicle back from dealership. then, on sunday, 20 july 2003, the vehicle overheated again!! my wife drove it to victorville motors (local chrysler dealer, victorville, ca) on monday, 21 july and there it has been since. we understood that it was the water pump again and the dealer was waiting for the zone and/or mfg to contact them to see what else could be done to rectify this anomalous condition. either in design and just a bad engine. block is iron, water pump and heads are aluminum. engine has overheated into the red line so many times, the block and other components have been severly heat stressed. my wife recently (jan 2003) discovered she had renal esrd (total kidney failure) and is currently doing dialysis. we live in victorville, ca and she must drive to fontanna, ca kaiser hospital for her treatments. approximately 40 miles each way climbing through a desert mountain pass, elevation 4340 ft. she requires a reliable vehicle and at this point in time, she does not have one. my wife could be stranded in the middle of a desert mountain pass with this problem vehicle. all we have asked for is chrysler replace the entire engine....my wife has wanted this dream car. for over 2-years. it..."..thank you........ron & gwen repass. *ak
