Problems with 2011 Chevrolet Traverse ENGINE

On average, the 2011 Chevrolet Traverse starts to “feel” problems with the ENGINE and its various aspects after 79 911 miles.

Recently reported ENGINE problems on 2011 Chevrolet Traverse

My car is overheating, have already changed the thermostat and flushed the radiator, the car still getting overheated

My wife and children were driving our 2011 traverse, when the traction control started to turn off and on, check engine light went on, displays started to roll through a number of warnings, and engine power was reduced and the car slowed to roughly 25 mph. this all occurred in the middle of traffic. the concern is that the sporadic lose of engine power dropping a car from 60 mph to 25 mph will cause an accident.

I was driving on the 95 and suddenly my car was flashing reduced engine power and the check engine light popped on. our speed dropped all the way down to 20 from 65. i have seven children who driving in the car with me and were horrified at all the traffic around us while we tried to coast to the side. thank god no one hit us! the check engine light is still on and we have replaced the trottle body, fuel pump, and a few other thing that popped up on the diagnostic testing for the check engine light. 16 codes popped up all at the same time. way too expensive to fix everything and pay payments or the car still. please help.

The car just completely stopped. no warning no lights no oil light no service engine. just quit going down the road at 60mph with my children in the car. now i am being told it is the motor. i have serviced the car i should have and treated it very well. there is not one reason a 2011 should just quit. i also had a issues with traction control in the dead of winter the car would flash traction control off engine will lose speed service stablitrack and the car would drop from 65mph right to 25mph in 5 seconds flat which was extremely dangerous any time of year not just winter. get those 2011 chevrolet traverses off the road.

While driving home from my mother's house, my 2011 chevy traverse suddenly, and without warning lost power. the warning "engine power reduced" came up. this made my car go from 45mph to 25 mph at an extremely alarming rate while on a busy highway. this is not the first instance of this happening with this particular year model. i have read many forums today, all filled with people having the same problem. apparently gm is doing nothing to correct the problem. it seems they are waiting for multiple injuries or god forbid deaths before they react. i just bought this car 2 months ago, and have put a little over 10,000 miles on it. have had the oil changed, and yet, just from reading some of the other complaints listed on the forums i have read i feel like i may be at a loss on this vehicle. i implore you to do something about this. too many hard working people have spent too much money on these vehicles to allow gm to get away with this. i feel i may be stuck making payments for a car that can't be driven. sincerely, [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).' *jb

While driving down the highway at speeds of 60 mph, my car started losing power and slowing down in the middle of the highway! i have googled this problem and other consumers have this issue as well. i was advised that this may be a problem with the engine. this could have killed me and my children! *tr

Engine overheated, reduced engine power came on and car shut down. had to have it towed. water pump had to be replaced, car is only 4 years old. doesn't make sense. *tr

Driving on highway at 60 mph. reduce power light and stability control light came on. traverse slowed down to 20 mph. i could not accelerate. i was almost rear ended on the highway. brought the traverse to the dealership where they replaced the throttle body. time for a recall.

Driving on the highway in nh in traffic when stabilitrac/reduced power/traction control light came on and car slowed down to 15 mph on a busy highway. barely made it off the next exit as car wouldn't go over 10 mph. luckily the cars behind me did not slam into me as it was a dangerous situation. a recall is needed is it is a serious safety issue. *tr

I purchased this 2011 chevy traverse in feb. of 2015, so i believed it to be a fairly new car in good shape. not even a month later the gas hand becomes faulty and is not showing the correct amount of gas, and starts fluctuating. next i'm riding on the freeway and the truck immediately starts slowing down and reads loss of engine power and shuts off right in the middle of the freeway. now i am freaking out with me and my kids in the car and others flying around me doing 75 to 80 mph to my decreasing speed. i was scared for my life and my children's lives as cars and trucks are speeding around and honking at me. the truck dies and i barely manage to get to the side so that i would not be hit. i then get the car towed to the local dealership who then says that the truck needs a water pump which turns out to be under my extended warranty. they also reset my fuel sensor because they say they tested it and it was still good. so it only cost me $100.00. i pick my truck up and it works fine for less than a month and starts up again. i run out of gas on a busy street and get another tow. back to the chevrolet house it goes. this time they reset the check engine light and says its still not the fuel pump, sensor, or anything because they cannot find anything at all. i go pick it up once again and on my way home ran out of gas, while the gas level is reading right at half a tank. i know there was gas in the tank when i ran out and when the truck was towed. the dealership kept my vehicle for a whole week and all they did was got the truck on level ground, obviously, and the truck ran all the gas out while parked and they were 'trying to find the problem'. so now the gas hand is not working at all and i'm always putting gas in it and taking a chance because nobody knows whats wrong. this vehicle has been nothing but a headache and this problem needs recalling before one dies.

On 2/3/15 driving 60mph on the 1-87 my steering wheel began to vibrate on and off. then drove about 5 miles further then my stabilitrack and traction control failed with its indication on the dash board then the vehicle skid symbol lit up and the dashboard stated engine loss of power and the vehicle slowing began to decelerate to about 40mph and i had to pull over on the shoulder and had my vehicle towed to chevy dealer. i was told it was my throttle body. which i see seems a big problem for a lot of 2011 traverse owners. the repair will cost me nearly $700 after i replaced a burned out wireharness for $658 just 2 weeks ago!!!! *tr

I was driving and the traction indicator light appeared. a warning showing loss of engine power was displayed and the car slowed to about 15 mph. i had to pull over. i turned the traverse off, and restarted it. i was able to drive home. the next day, the same thing happened. after restarting the car, i was able to get home. from what i've been reading, this is a very common occurrence for this vehicle. it should be recalled and fixed. *js

Tl*the contact owns a 2011 chevrolet traverse. the contact stated that while driving at approximately 30 mph, the steering wheel seized. the failure recurred several times. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that a spark plug needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was unknown. the vin was not available.

When i pulled out of a driveway and began to drive down the street, my traverse message board read, traction control off, engine power reduced, service stablitrac. i was unable to accelerate past 40 mph. my car was unsteady and shaky. i called gm and they stated that i have recalls issued on the car but none of them have anything to do with my current issue. it seems this is a common problem that gm is not addressing concerning a faulty throttle body. i am very frighten to drive especially of highway and with my children in the car. i bought this vehicle because i believed it would be safe for my family. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 chevrolet traverse. while driving approximately 40 mph, the stabilitrak light illuminated and the engine lost power. the contact was able to drive the vehicle to the dealer, but it was not diagnosed or repaired. the failure recurred twice. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 72,046...updated 06-11-15 *bf updated 11/23/2015*js

While driving, the vehicle suddenly showed alerts reading traction control off, service traction control, service stabilitrak, and engine power reduced. at this time the vehicle immediately slowed down to 20mph. thankfully my toddlers were not in the car and i did not have traffic behind me so that i could safely pull over to the shoulder. i turned off the vehicle for a few minutes and restarted again, at which time the same errors returned with the exception of engine power reduced, so that i could at least make it home. i immediately called my chevy dealer who completes all service on my vehicle, and i was told that this is a common problem, especially in the cold temperatures as oil tends to accumulate in the throttle body and freeze up, making the sensor go haywire, leaving the throttle unable to compensate for the changes, and the warnings to occur. i was told it would not be covered under the powertrain warranty and that there was no recall. i was also told that it wasn't a big deal and it should be fine when it warms up. i guess we differ in our opinion of whether a car shutting down in the middle of the highway or with my children in the car is a big deal. i guess we also differ in our opinions about whether a $40k vehicle should function in freezing temperatures that occur for four months of the year in the northeast. chevrolet has issued recalls for this very issue with many other vehicles and some years of traverses but not all. chevrolet, you need to stand behind your vehicles...take responsibility for the $100 part that can very easily be fixed in 15 minutes time instead of forcing customers to drive an unsafe vehicle or shell out upwards of $600 to make the repair. i love this car, probably my favorite vehicle i have ever owned, but this is a major problem. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 chevrolet traverse. the contact stated while driving 60 mph, the electronic stability control, traction control and the engine power reduced warning lights illuminated on the instrumental panel. the vehicle independently reduced power. the contact merged to the side of the road where the vehicle was turn off and restarted however, the warning indicator remained illuminated. the dealer was made contacted. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not diagnosed. the failure mileage was 82,000.

I was driving along at 60 mph when my traction control light turned off, followed by "service stabilitrack", followed by "reduced engine power" and my vehicle went from 60 mph immediately down to 15 mph. if i were in heavy traffic or had any vehicles following me, this would have caused a major accident and potentially serious injuries, to me, my (xxx) year old son and whoever was behind me!!! *trparts of this document have been redacted to protect personally identifiable information pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

On six separate occasions in 7 days, my vehicle has displayed the following messages, traction control off, check stabilitrak, and reduced engine power then suddenly reduces speed significantly unwilling to accelerate. i have to pull over, turn off the car and wait several minutes before i can turn the car back on for it to drive correctly. this is extremely dangerous and i know it is a recurring issue for many gm 2010-2012 vehicles and no recall or solution has been made yet. *tr

Tl-the contact owns a 2011 chevrolet traverse. the contact stated that while driving at 50 mph, the reduced engine power warning light illuminated causing the vehicle to reduce to 15 mph and stall. the vehicle was able to restart. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 39,000. djr

I was driving at about 50 mph when the "stabilitrack system" "reduced engine power" "service stabiltrack" errors went off which reduced my speed suddenly to 20 mph and i had to pull off to the side. this could have caused a major accident had i been on a highway, thankfully i was not. after doing some research this is a common problem with chevy traverse's and gm should issue a recall for this part. i had to pay out of pocket to replace the throttle sensor and body and gm will not reimburse me. it's also not covered by their powertrain warranty. *tr

While traveling on the hwy at 65 mph i got a message on the dash that read "service traction control" then "service stabilitrack" then "engine power reduced" all simultaneously. then i lost power and went drastically from 65 mph down to about 40 mph. i almost got ran over by a semi truck!! i pulled vehicle to the side and slowly made my way to the nearest exit. once i got off the hwy i tried to make my way back home, but the power was reduced to a crawl, so i pulled into a parking lot and ended up having to get it towed to the shop. they diagnosed the car and found no mechanical issues, only what seemed to be a "glitch" in the computer system. suggested that i may need to replace the throttle body. i picked up my car and it drove fine for 5 days then it did the same thing again, luckily i was in my neighborhood. drove it home and parked it. the next morning it drove just fine, no issues, and today it happened again. i have spent the last few hours reading hundreds of other complaints describing the exact same scenario, and found that they are taking their vehicle into the dealer and getting parts replaced only to have it happen again and then more parts replaced and it continues in this cycle... this from only one forum and there are a number of others a like! *tr

While traveling on local road in my town, i was traveling about 30mph when all of a sudden the service traction control light came on and i lost power with speed being reduced. thankfully, no one was behind me so i was able to control where i would stop the vehicle. i returned to my house and went on line to see what this problem was and saw numerous complaints from other traverse owners with regards to the same incident occurring. from what i have been reading, chevrolet is aware of this problem but doesn't seem to correct the problem. there have been numerous reports of this happening on major highways where the speed was much greater than mine and thankfully no one was killed. car will be going in next tuesday to dealer for hopefully correction of this problem. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 chevrolet traverse. while the vehicle was parked, the ignition switch was turned to the off position and the engine continued to run. in addition, the engine was making an abnormal noise and discovered that the battery fractured. the contact also stated that the engine warning light illuminated. the contact replaced the battery. the vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that there was a leak behind the glove department that leaked onto the fuse, which caused a wire shortage. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 85,000.

I was on my way the chevy dealer to have the safety belt and airbag recall repairs completed on my 2011 traverse. i had four children ages (xxx) and under in the car with me. after coming to a complete stop at an intersection i made a left hand turn into the inside traffic lane on a busy 5 lane road and began accelerate to the speed of traffic. as soon as i reached 40 mph, my speed quickly dropped to between 15 and 20 mph and the following warning messages showed up on my dash: reduced engine power, service stabilitrac and service traction control. fortunately, i was able to merge back over to the right lane and then completely pull off the road into a parking lot without getting rear-ended by the cars behind me that were traveling at the speed limit. i turned the car off, then back on, and attempted to drive. the maximum rate of speed my car would reach was 20 mph, but i managed to drive it to the dealer taking back roads and subdivision roads. the dealer diagnosed the problem as a faulty throttle body. i did some research and discovered this is a well-known issue with these gm vehicles and a serious safety risk. after two days in the shop they completed the two recall related repairs without charge, but my cost to replace the throttle body and and reset the idle was $513.00. i told the dealer that i was aware that this is a well-known and well-documented issue so i did not feel that i should be responsible for the repair costs, but they refused to cover any of the cost because no recall has been issued for this problem. i believe this problem should be investigated and gm should issue a recall. i am a frequent highway driver and if i had been merging onto the interstate this incident could have ended in tragedy. *trparts of this document have been redacted to protect personally identifiable information pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

Use remote starter. after a few minutes of warming up unlocked and entered vehicle. once key turned to on doors started to lock and unlock. put car in reverse barely moved. tried drive and would not move? check engine light, stability track lights are on. not good when you need to get to work. *js

2011 chevy traverse is having fuel gauge issues. gm has a recall out on 2014 models, however my 2011 is experiencing the exact same problem but no recall for that year. per gm this can result in the vehicle unexpectedly running out of fuel and stalling, increasing the risk of a crash. *tr

I was driving from hagerstown md. when my traverse went from me driving 70mph. to 35 miles ph. it put my traverse in limp mode it shut down rightwhen iam getting ready to pass i barely got off of 81 south i didn't have enough power to even pull to the side of the highway the throttle body sensor shut down turned off the traction control slowed the engine down to almost a complete stop. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 chevrolet traverse. while driving approximately 70 mph, the traction control warning light illuminated and the engine speed reduced to approximately 15 mph. the vehicle was towed to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the throttle body needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired due to the part not being available. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 70,000. the vin was not available.

I bought a 2011 traverse last winter. i was so excited about my new family car. wednesday, the service stabilitrak, service traction control and reduced engine speed came on with no notice. luckily, i was on a neighborhood side street taking my kids to school. i called to setup an appt to have a chevy dealer look at it but after turning it off while filling the tires up the lights all went off. called back to see if they still wanted to see it and they said no because it must have just been a sensor... appt canceled. thursday drove with no problems. now today, friday, i hop on the expressway in chicago traffic and bam right as i am merging, ding ding and my car just revs and won't get up past 40 mph, all the same service lights came on. so scary! i have my little kids in the backseat and terrified to pull over on the side of the eisenhower, slowly get to the next exit as i pray we won't get rear ended. call as soon as i make it home for another appt and the first time any chevy dealer near me has open is 4 days from now. looks like we will be parked at home for the next 4 days. it really frustrates me that we bought this "reliable family vehicle" that i am now scared to drive my family in. it's even worse now googling this issue and seeing many other having the exact same issues and nothing is being done for us. *tr

Four times today as i was driving my chevy traverse the traction control went off, the stability control went off, and a message flashed that i could experience a reduction in power, which happened immediately after the notification. the car barely had enough power to make it safely out of traffic. this happened one other time last year but when we brought it to the dealer they could not replicate the problem. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2011 chevrolet traverse. the contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the traction control and the engine reducing message illuminated as the vehicle decelerated. the failure recurred on several occasions. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 76,000.

Stabilitrak control, anti lock brakes and engine speed reduced. wife's car while on her way to work. there are hundreds if not thousands of consumers with this exact same issue with various makes/models of gm vehicles. once the throttle body / throttle positions sensor becomes dirty, it sets off a series of failures causing the vehicle to reduce power to the point where it can only travel at about 35 mph. this is a very dangerous situation to place drivers in. i called my local chevrolet dealer to inquire about whether or not this was covered under the 5 year 100,000 mile power train warranty and was told that it was. when the dealer verified that it was the throttle body, they told me that it would cost me about 500 dollars and that it was not covered under the powertrain warranty. this is a vital engine component. how can it not be considered to be part of the power train? *tr

At a stop and engine started to rev past 2k rpms and would accelerate without touching the gas pedal. *tr

Have had two incidents where the stability track has come on and had to pull over and turn vehicle off wait 10 minutes and restart and finally it goes off. the last incident was i was driving the light comes on saying engine power reducing and it drops speed down to where i have to pull over not to get hit. i pull over turn the truck off and it starts but reduces power again and turns itself off this happens about three times before i give up. i then have to call a tow truck when they arrive and tries to start it does start now. i have been having this vehicle for 6 months. *tr

While backing up at a very low speed the vehicle steering wheel locked up, i then realized the engine had shut off. i noted the key was still in the on position and the back up camera was still on. restarted vehicle and no further problems were noticed. when attempting to duplicate this issue the only time i could get the steering wheel to lock up was if the key was removed from the ignition. also back up camera would only stay on if the car was running and in reverse so it is unclear why the steering wheel locked up with the key in the on position. this could be a serious safety issue if it happened under different circumstances. *tr

Traction control turned off, stabilitrak trak turned off and then it said they needed service, immediately after it then started down shifting and quickly slowing itself down. it is a real hazard on icy roads and on the interstate in traffic when the vehicle quickly slows itself down. many posts on the internet with this problem repeatedly occurring with multiple repair attempts at dealerships. i'm starting on my 2nd trip to the dealership. this is a definite safety issue when the car takes control and slows itself down. by shutting off the car it will reset the system and then it will work properly for a while. but this problem keeps recurring after it has been driven for a while. *tr

I was driving the truck on the main street when the truck just turned off, everything shut down even the radio...checked the ignition and the key was still on, luckily when the car stopped the cars behind me stopped.i was then able to turn the key again, and the truck turned on...this has happened one other time but don't remember the date exactly... i also had the water pump replaced after being told by the dealer that it was ok...i am looking to get refunded for that repair...bulletin no. 13079. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 chevrolet traverse. while at a stop light, the vehicle was shifted to the drive position and rolled away approximately 10 to 50 feet. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the valve needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired; however, the failure recurred and the engine stalled. the vehicle was restarted, but the failure recurred numerous times. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 24,000.

While driving at highway speeds my 2011 chevy traverse began to overheat. the temperature gauge pegged all the way up to 260 degrees. i checked the coolant tank and could see that it was slightly low but nothing to cause an overheat. i attempted to drive to get to an auto parts store to get coolant. i was able to get the coolant and added the coolant and allowed the car to cool before attempting to start again. after about 30 minutes had passed i started the car again and the temperature gauge was down to 211 degrees. i attempted to drive again and a message came up on my dic, it read engine overheat idle engine, the engine power reduced and i was only able to go about 40mph. i pulled to the side of the road and to no avail in the end had to have my car towed to a repair shop. after $745.00, the water pump and thermostat had to be replaced. the technician indicated that the water pump had been leaking. i never saw any leaking in my driveway or when i changed the oil. *tr

We came to a brief stop at a drive through lane (approx. 5-10 seconds), hard crank of the wheel left, mild acceleration, traveled about 15 feet, crank to right, pull into a parking spot. immediately prior to the vehicle coming to a stop, i noticed thick white smoke emanating from the edges of the hood, and when the car came to a stop i ordered everyone to get out. black smoke started as we exited the vehicle. i had the fire out quickly, estimate 45-60 seconds from seeing smoke until the fire was completely extinguished with a chemical extinguisher. immediately after the fire was out, when i was checking the undercarriage, i noticed a trail of oil leading up a couple of feet from the final resting place of the vehicle. this was obscured by additional oil leaking, shortly thereafter. *js

Condenser and all belts had major leaks for no apparent reason. lost all refrigerant in less that 24 hours. *tr

My issue started when i was making left hand turns it would sound like the engine would make a loud noise with some grinding noise. then it started happening with right hand turns as well. took it to the dealership today and they believe that it is the transmission. after doing some research i found alot of similar issues. this needs to be fixed by gm. i am curious to see how this is handled by gm and the dealership. basically it should be a no brainer, the vehicle is 4 years old, transmission should not go out that fast. already filed a complaint and contacting gm this afternoon as well. i have a feeling this is going to be a fight. below are other issues reported to nhtsa, i stopped looking after page 3 took car in for odd noise in steering. was told pump was bad and seal was bad. appears that this is a common issue with this type of vehicle and no recall has been made. its not just one or two cars, after research is hundreds of cars. nhtsa id number: 10567931 loud whining sound coming from front end. when turning steering wheel slowly you can hear a loud scratching noise. bought the car brand new and only have 17k miles in 3 years. entire steering column had to be replaced. power steering fluid leaking. nhtsa id number: 10566861 tl* the contact owns a 2011 chevrolet traverse. the contact stated that there was an abnormal vibration in the steering wheel when turning in either direction. the contact also indicated that the vehicle was stationary. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where the power steering fluid and pump were replaced but the failure was not remedied. the manufacturer was not notified. the failure mileage was 20,000. nhtsa id number: 10555889 power steering has issues at low speeds when turning. dealer cost to replace pump and gear is 2,500! nhtsa id number: 10520885. *tr

Vehicle was 2011 chevy traverse w/ awd with history (four instances) of engine oil leaks/requiring engine removal and reinstall. vehicle was on interstate when awd/vehicle stability control lights went on. dic indicated 'service stabiltrack', 'service awd' and 'awd disabled'. at that time, vehicle was 'chugging' but shortly after chugging got much worse to the extent that the vehicle could not accelerate or maintain speed at cruise, or without cruise up normal hills on an interstate. when gas pedal was pressed further, rpm/speed would increase but then drop sharply (500-1000rpm) multiple times and no further power could be applied. vehicle slowed down to about 50mph at the top of a hill. happened for the next 15-20 miles until it could be pulled over. vehicle was taken in once right after original occurrence, all three lights had gone off at point and vehicle drove normally after that. service center indicated a wheel censor (front right) was reading defective information. they cleaned 'dust' from the sensor. happened again about two weeks later, similar circumstances/results. service center indicated wheel sensor was bad, they replaced (at my cost) and had no further instances for about four months. similar situation happened again today (7/19/2014, conditions and results). however, the engine chugging was much worse and vehicle could not be driven safely on the interstate, would not accelerate or maintain safe interstate speed. *tr

Traveling at 70 mph, suddenely traction control light came on, then engine powered down, i find that this is a common problem with this car, why isn't something being done. this has happened 4 times since march 5, 2014. at shop now will cost me over $500.00 to replace the throttle control. this needs to be a recall. *tr

While driving down the highway at high rates of speeds, all of a sudden the dashboard display lights up with all kinds of messages. it says to check traction control and reducing engine power. the engine reduces power and when you step on the gas it doesn't go anywhere. this happened a few times. at first i thought maybe it was ice buildup but after it happened a few more times i looked online where i came across a forum and found out there were hundreds of other chevy traverse owners who had the same problems. it happened on the highway when i was driving and i almost got smashed from behind by people going over 70mph. the car would barely move. the traverse was only 2 years old. after taking it to the dealer they stated it was the throttle body. it wasn't covered under warranty. i believe it should've been since the throttle body is part of the engine. how can a vehicle 2-3years old and have a 100,000 mile power train warranty not be covered. after talking to a few chevy people i found out this has happened to other types of gm vehicles too. they stated there has been bulletins put out on earlier models but never a actual recall. i called gm corporate but they didn't want to hear it. very serious problem that needs to be addressed. *tr
