Problems with 2010 Chevrolet Traverse ENGINE

On average, the 2010 Chevrolet Traverse starts to “feel” problems with the ENGINE and its various aspects after 87 535 miles.

Recently reported ENGINE problems on 2010 Chevrolet Traverse

At 68,000 miles, the check engine light came on, i took it to the local chevy dealer who said it was a timing chain problem. they said that it would cost about $3200 to fix. doing some research (obd2 codes p0008 and p0009) this is a common problem with this particular engine, spanning many models and model years.

My 2010 chevy traverse was built in spring hill tennessee facility in 2009. i bought this vehicle at the end of february 2010. my vehicle was maintained per manufacturer instructions, oil was always changed, usually around whit 40% of oil remaining and always before the oil life was exhausted. at ~91000 miles car displayed intermittent check engine sign which become permanent around ~94,000 miles. i took the car to mechanic which showed multiple errors, after fixing camshaft sensor the check engine sign remained and mechanic told me that i have drive chain error. the engine started losing power, failed to accelerate. i took the vehicle to dealer i bought from, was told car had multiple issues including catalytic converter and starter, rusted leaking y-ties but most expensive was timing chain at above $2300. both i and dealer contacted general motor customer care service. after taking my initial call, gm assigned case to a service adviser who never returned my call. she apparently returned dealer service manager's call and advised him to offer me $1000 discount at dealer's expense who advised gm customer service that gm, as manufacturer of defective part should take responsibility. gm refused any help with the repair of vehicle although the timing chain is clearly defective..

Check engine light came on at about 78,000 miles. dealer indicated it was the drive chain needed repair ($2000-2500). this problem was covered by special policy #11340b ' special coverage adjustment ' timing chain wear " in 2009 chevy traverse models. my vehicle has had excellent maintenance and care, usually by the dealer. this should not be an issue at only 78,000 miles.

Timing change replaced 06/26/2017 cost me 2505.34 dollars only had 72896 miles all i got from gm was sorry things do ware out case number #[xxx] light came on when driving on the highway information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tt

Catastrophic engine failure due to timing chain and crankshaft failure. my mechanic suggested contacting gm as it was known failure and issue. gm was unresponsive to providing any assistance.

While driving to work,i start hearing dings. i look at the dash and it tells me that my traction is off, to check my stabilitrack, and also the brake was on. then all of the lights turned back off except the traction light. now it feels as though my vehicle is being pulled backwards as i try to drive. definitely a loss of power.

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 chevrolet traverse. the contact stated that the check engine warning indicator illuminated. the contact took the vehicle to the dealer (chevrolet cadillac of goldsboro) where it was diagnosed that the timing chain failed and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and opened case number: 8/3034264137. the contact was advised to call nhtsa to file a complaint. the approximate failure mileage was 77,000.

Check engine light came on along withtraction control. code for check engine was p0008.

2010 chevy traverse. check engine light code p0017. dealer is stating it is a timing chain, cost around $2700. traverse only has 101,000 miles on it. my chevy traverse should not be needing a timing chain replaced at such low mileage. gm is not being cooperative with all the complaints of this problem online. there are specific areas in the country where gm is paying for this repair but it is vin specific. gm is stating that if manufactured in certain plants, timing chain is a problem, even though it is the same engine! i have had more recalls on this vehicle than any other vehicle i have owned. i once loved this vehicle and thought gm would take care of known problems, now i know that i am wrong. i will not buy another gm vehicle.

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 chevrolet traverse. while driving at an unknown speed, the check engine indicator illuminated. the vehicle was taken to the local dealer (seidle chevrolet located at 1141 e main st clarion, pa 16214 814-226-8300) where it was diagnosed that the timing chain needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to nhtsa. the failure mileage was 119,000.

Check engine light came on in my 2010 chevy traverse. the dealership indicated the timing chain had stretched and if left unrepaired could lead to catastrophic failure of the engine. the repair cost is $3500. the vehicle only has 67000 miles on it, and has always had routine maintenance and oil changes conducted. further investigation revealed that 2007-2009 models of the same engine on similar models had the exact same issue. additionally, a simple google search reveals many forums that have complaints of the same issue on their 2010 models. it appears that the problem was not corrected in the 2010 model year, or at least not in certain run of the engine. whether the same bad chain was used in 2010 engines or the problem that was discovered in the 2007-2009 model years, was not discovered until after the 2010 models were built, and they were just not included in the service bulletin is the question. because a well maintained vehicle with only 67000 miles to have a bad timing chain is rare, as many different repair shops have confirmed. those same shops also confirmed they have seen many of the traverse. acadia, and enclave models with the same timing chain issue.

Timing chain is bad in 2010 traverse with approximately 99000 miles. this seems to be a common problem for this yea. gm issues a recall for.2009 but none.for.2010. sudden engine failure is dangerous.

At 88,000 mile i have recieved a p0008 code - timing chains. this is odd to have stretched timing chains at this mileage. reviewing similar complaints on the internet, this seems to be a common problem with 3.6 l engines made before 2011. i contact gm with no avail. being such a common complaint by many why isn't gm standing behind this problem?

I have 2010 chevrolet traverse. this car got a problem with engine. timing chain is stretched out and engine runs rough with multiple misfires and noise. i took this car to diagnostic and dealer diagnosed and confirm existing problem with timing chain. after some investigation and research i found out that gmc extended a warranty till 10 years/120000 mi for 2009 chevrolet traverse. but they said that my car does not qualify for this recall because it's been made from different parts. this is not fair and not right. it doesn't matter from what parts was made engine in my car. the fact is that my car has the same problem as 2009 chevy traverse what qualify for extended warranty. the issue with timing chain was never fixed on 2010 model year and many people have the same problem. i know that i'm not the only one who got this kind of situation. i'd like to resolve this problem before it will go to the court. gmc representative please contact with me to resolve it. thanks, [xxx] *dl information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).'*jb

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 chevrolet traverse. while driving approximately 70 mph, the check engine and stabilitrac sensor indicators suddenly illuminated and the speed reduced to approximately 5 mph. the vehicle was driven to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the engine had become damaged and would need to be replaced. the cause of the failure was not determined. the vehicle was not repaired the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 114,000. updated 06/07/17*lj updated 08/08/2017*js

Timing chain is out of sync. mechanic states that error codes are causing the the check engine light to illuminate that are based around skipping/slipping timing chain. states that timing chain must be repaired. if timing chain fails to work correctly, engine could seize cause the vehicle fail unexpectedly.

I took my car in for motor light and oil change. i was advised that my timing chain was some wear and needs changing. i was told by a mechanic that these cars have this problem all the time and a recall should have been issued on them. it was for the 2009, but a lot of the 2010 had the same chain and issue as the 2009. of course the dealer is not gong to agree to anything. they are telling me its 2800, just to change the belt as precaution. this is price gouging when they know it's an issue. i need help...

Engine light came on while diving at city speeds, took it to stewart chevrolet and the said it was the p0008 and p0017 timing chain and crank camshaft. this is the 3rd time that this is occurring . 1st was at 60,929k and second was at 81,781k they want between $3,000 to $9,000 to repair and no guarantee that it won't occur at next 20k, gm are not standing by there product nor is steward.

Complete engine failure of my 2010 chevrolet traverse at 111,556 miles. new engine installed by the dealer at cost of $7560.00. no financial assistance by gm despite repeated requests.

Several malfunction indicator warning lights and messages continue to appear on the driver console under certain driving conditions. they warn "service stabilitrak" ; "service traction control" ; and, "engine power is reduced" these malfunction alert are accompanied by a severe deceleration of the vehicle and no response or very modest response when the accelerator is depressed. this issue has presented itself four (4) separate times in 2016 and 2017 while the vehicle was being driven on highways (3 times at speeds of 60 mph) and always when the temperature has been near or below freezing (32 degrees). gm has notified me of this issue impacting cars of the same year, make and model. however, the vehicle on board computer (obc) clears after the 3rd restart (according to the dealership) and proof of the error via the obc is wiped out (only leaving me with video and pictures, which gmc will not honor in its repair protocol). as stated, this reoccurring issue is being experienced at high speeds on busy highways and the car will quickly throttle down to speeds of 30-40 mph -- which is a very dangerous situation in a highway environment (like the 495 beltway in washington, dc). i truly fear for my safety in driving this vehicle and gmc is complacent in having me prove through the obc that this is happening, and then having a dealership recreate the issue. there a hundreds of references to this issue as i searched the internet for answers long before gmc reached out to me. gmc is playing games with consumers and advising that this issue dows not pose to safety hazard. my experiences in this vehicle are proof that their claims are false. please investigate this issue --- contact me --- gm's protocol is getting in the way of addressing dangerous vehicle issues.

The timing chain and the crank sensor

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 chevrolet traverse. while driving 60 mph, the stabilitrac warning and reduced engine power warning indicators illuminated and the vehicle stalled. the contact was able to restart the vehicle; however, the failure recurred. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the contact stated that the failure was intermittent. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 70,000.

My check-engine light came on while the vehicle was on a 300 mile trip, and the trouble codes at 2 different shops indicated that the timing chain had stretched and had to be replaced at 81,000 miles. luckily, the vehicle did not breakdown on the highway. prior to learning about similar problems in 2009 and some 2010 models, i had the chain replaced by a non gm mechanic. since then i learned that gm has reimbursed or extended the warranty on select traverse vehicles.

Not sure i should do this but it has occured 2 times bow. my traverse eccelerator gets stuck down and you cant atop. the only way to stop is put in nutral if you have the time. i am afraid to have my wife deive this. it happened for the 2nd time since i have owned it the other day. the breaks wont worm unless you put it into nutral!!!

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 chevrolet traverse. while driving 55 mph, the vehicle stalled and a warning indicator illuminated. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the timing chain was defective and needed to be replaced. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 160,000.

The engine light came on and i took it to a shop, where they told me the codes indicate that your timing chain is stretched. there is a recall on this issue but does not cover the 2010 model. i was told that the issue had been corrected with better parts, but is having the same issue the 2007,2008, and 2009 model years.

I have an issue with the electrical system when the vehicle gets wet from rain or any kind of moisture i lose all warning chimes, blinkers on occasion, and the lights will flicker at times. defective timing chains in a vehicle that was manufactured in 2009 where an extended warranty was issued for vehicles having faulty timing chains but since my vehicle was sold as a 2010 i don't qualify for the special extended warranty. while driving around a bend with the defective timing chain i have encountered a loss of power on the highway which almost caused a wreck while my kids were in the car on a trip. *tr

The check engine light came on at around 82,000 miles. we took it to the dealership and they are telling us the timing chain is stretched and needs replaced. $2,200.00 to repair. i've done some research and this very issue was fixed under warranty for the 2007-2009 model years. for some reason gm is not warranting beyond that. while researching this issue i found instances where the chain catastrophically failed causing the drive system to lock up.

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 chevrolet traverse. while driving various speeds, the check engine, traction control, and stabilitrak warning indicators illuminated and the vehicle's power independently reduced. the contact mentioned that the failure recurred multiple times. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the timing chain failed and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 104,940.

Stability control and check engine light and transmission wont work park and now it dosent work why no recall too many complaints.

Our 2010 traverse has just over 91,000 miles on it. we took our vehicle to a local gm dealer to have a check engine light diagnosed. the dealer came back and informed me we needed to have our timing belts replaced and would cost at least $3000 to repair. the more i dug into this diagnosis, i've come across numerous posts from other '09-'10 owners with the same issue. some had experienced sudden loss in power while traveling at highway speeds and others hadn't even had a check engine light come on. there were some owners that had to have these items replaced at around 60,000mi. i have reached out to gm and they informed me that there is nothing they can do to help alleviate this cost, nor are they in a position to issue a recall. they also informed me that we missed the 'warranty period' by a year and a half and that there are no 'special bulletins' related to my vehicle. i asked if they had an increase in other calls about this same issue and they denied any knowing of this. my dealership told me that they are seeing such an increase in this issue that they keep an inventory of parts on hand and they perform at least 3 timing chain repairs a week. i'm fortunate that our dealership is working with us on doing what they can to alleviate some of the cost, but gm is not doing anything on their end to acknowledge there is a potential problem or willing to help out.

At approximately 92,000 miles i started getting error code p0008 on my 2010 chevy traverse. the light would come on for a few days, then off for a day or two, until finally it just stayed on all of the time. the acceleration was very poor, and the gas mileage poor as well (compared to what it had previously been getting). i change my oil well before the meter in the car tells me to, usually before 5000 miles. dealer said the timing chains stretched due to excessively dirty oil, but as stated earlier, i always changed the oil before the meter said to change the oil. dealer replaced all tensioners and chains and resealed the front cover and refilled fluids. gm covered 45% of cost even though vehicle was beyond warranty period. for a job that usually would cost about $2300, i paid $1336. i've read that others have had this problem with the 3.6l v6 on the early model traverses and other gms with the same engine. i believe that the reason that i got up to 92,000 miles is because i change my oil so regularly. the lack of acceleration was very unsafe for merging into traffic in denver, especially when it first began happening, unexpectedly. vehicle was having trouble holding speed on hills on fast streets. if problem had gotten worse, vehicle would have not been drivable. *tr

i am writing because i have had this vehicle a little over 1 year and put less than 18,000 miles on it and yet it is constantly in the shop for costly repairs. i am currently wondering where drivetime sources these vehicles from because a used car should not have to be in the shop as much as my car is especially when drivetime's chosed extended warranty company aeverex only wants to pay for repairs that they deem fair to pay for which is a disadvantage for a buyer such as myself. i have consistently paid my note on time and got the run around for 2 weeks on the last repairs that aeverex took their time addressing. i don't mind making minor repairs like tires or maybe a hole in the muffler but to have to replace a timing chain within a week of the purchase and an engine flywheel and starter in barely a year of the purchase makes it seem as if these cars were broken down before being sold to unsuspecting customers such as myself by drivetime and their refusal to assist to the customers in their time of need makes it seem as if they were intentional on getting these damaged goods off of their hands. i am filing this formal complaint with the national highway traffic safety administration because this is an important issue as my car has stopped in the middle of oncoming highway traffic and i could have been killed. this vehicle is a true lemon and i only wished that i had done more research on drivetime before purchasing from them. i have had to replace wipers in the first month in addition to the timing chain and tires the next month, front brake lights, back brake lights, a flexplate, a flywheel, and multiple other repairs. please respond and offer some type of assistance.

My 2010 traverse with 76,200 miles displayed the check engine light. i had it checked at a local parts store and the code was p0008. i took the traverse to orr chevrolet where it was diagnosed with slack in the timing chain. i contacted gm and they advised that they wouldn't do anything about it since it was a 2010 and out of the 5 year power train warranty. despite the fact they had extended the warranty on the 2009 models because they had the same issue. this is a known defect on the traverse and gm should recall and cover repairs. as it stands, i am about to pay $2300.00 to repair what is a known defect. gm made no significant design changes to prevent this defect from causing the chain to gain slack and cause engine issues to develop. the vehicle was moving at 35 mph when it initially came on but came back on after being reset while sitting in the lot of autozone. the traverse should not have such a failure in only 72,000 miles, there is a defect and should be recalled in models later than 2009. the design changes if any for the 2010 models clearly didn't solve the issue. the vehicles is currently at the dealer, and i don't have the estimate or receipt at this time. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 chevrolet traverse. while driving various speeds, the contact heard an abnormal noise coming from the engine and the vehicle started to shake. the vehicle failed to accelerate and the check engine indicator illuminated. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the timing chain needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 110,000. updated 07/12/17*lj *cn

I am having timing chain issues as everyone else i have seen or read about my sub only 78,000 miles and gm will not extend the warranty on this part

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 chevrolet traverse. while driving approximately 30 mph, the vehicle lost power and the engine warning indicator illuminated. the contact was able to coast the vehicle to the side of the road and powered off the engine. the vehicle was restarted and was able to be driven to the contact's home. the vehicle was taken to eric von schledorn chevrolet buick (805 e green bay ave, saukville, wi 53080, (262) 284-8000) where it was diagnosed that the timing chain and tensioner failed and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired; however, the failure recurred. the contact took the vehicle back to the dealer where they contacted the manufacturer, but no assistance was offered. the approximate failure mileage was 101,847.

Timing chain is loose. loosing fuel and power.

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 chevrolet traverse. while driving various speeds, the check engine warning indicator illuminated. the failure recurred intermittently. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the air bag system failed. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 79,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 chevrolet traverse. upon starting the vehicle, the check engine warning indicator illuminated. the vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the timing chain was failing and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 115,000.

Blown engine @. 55,000 miles while driving at normal speed.

Car stopped functioning in middle of highway with no warning. was very dangerous situation with 2 small children in the vehicle. no steering, no power brakes and no engine. traverse was purchased new in aug 2010 and has approx. 55,000 miles. needs new engine. had chain issues in jan 2015.

The timing chain has stretched and the dealer says it will take 19 hours to change it. auto mfg went to timing chains from rubber belts, so they don't have to change it. the warranty is for 5 yrs or 100,000 miles. this is a known issue and the warranty for this expensive job should be extended. once the chain brakes, the car is done. the car makes noise and doesn't accelerate properly because of this issue. first noticed the check engine light on about 6 months or so ago. it wasn't until we broke down in canada that the dealer there said it was the timing chain when they replaced the throttle body.

Vehicle keeps pulling code p0008. gets sluggish after engine light comes on. seems there was a recall for the 2009 models that were having the same issues.

Our 2010 traverse was diagnosed with a stretched timing chain with only 63,400 miles. this is a major repair cost- chevy dealer estimate of $4364! this is a documented and admitted defect by general motors for the 2009 model year traverse. our vehicle is an early 2010 model year vehicle (built sep 3, 2009 and put into service jan 4, 2010). gm is aware of this wide spread issue and has not accepted responsibility for repairs. additionally, we haven't been able to use the remote start (during winter in mn!) because check engine light disables this feature.

At 84000 miles the emissions light came on yet nothing was a red flag while driving. no noises or anything seemed different. had diagnostics completed and timing chain was stretched and needed replaced. codes p0008, p0009, p0017 appeared. cost $2500. our warranty was up at 83000 miles. seems this is a common problem yet the dealership never mentioned any of this during the sale. gm should have a recall on this!!

Major headaches with my 2010 chev traverse with so many issues including recalls and the timing chain being replaced/repaired recently. and now, the engine failed....it needs a new or rebuilt engine. unfortunately i'm beyond my warranty of 5 years / 100,000 miles. cost with labor to replace the engine is about $7,000 +. it's not worth it and i still owe $4,800 on the loan. the dealer stated the timing chain issue was not related to the failed engine, but i'm not sure. i'm just frustrated with the traverse.

At approximately 90,000 miles the check engine light came on and after it was evaluated at the chevrolet dealership i was notified the timing chain went out and i had a gmpp extended warranty and the chevrolet dealership repaired the timing chain. 6,000 miles later the check engine light appeared by flashing repeatedly and the engine seized and the dealership investigated and stated the catalytic converter disintegrated and pieces of the catalytic converter was sucked into the engine. they stated the engine had to be replaced. they claimed to contact gm and gm said they were aware of the issue but it was not considered a recall. gm offered to pay for $8,000 of the $10,000 total engine replacement. i was only offered a 12,000 mile warranty for the new engine. now with 50,000 miles on the new engine the timing chain has gone out once again. i do not believe the issue with timing chains was resolved in 2010 with the new ecm; this issue continues as noted and seen with several complaints on this site.

The stability/track light turned on while driving home from a meeting. the airbag service light goes on and off too.

While driving our vehicle some sensors starting to go off and we started losing power to the vehicle which in turn caused a huge and very dangerous situation. the traverse we were driving showed a traction control, service stabilitrak signal. it began to lose power and slow down. if we were in the middle of the highway we would have wrecked, luckily we were not. i have noticed that this has been an issue on many other traverse's as well as many other vehicles within the chevrolet lineup, yet there is still no recall. i am not sure what needs to be done or if someone really needs to hurt before a recall is made, but someone need to make the right call before anyone gets hurt with this issue. i have contacted chevrolet and they said it is a know issue but there is no recall for it, what needs to be done to make this recall happen, does someone need to seriously get hurt? it also appears that there are no fixes for this issue and it is just costing owners, more and more money to get repairs they don't really need. where do i go from here?
