Recently reported STEERING problems on 2010 Chevrolet Traverse

The 1st time it happened, we were driving on the highway with the entire family in the car. 2 adults & 3 children. the steering locks up while the car is in motion. it gets worse when you step on the brake. there is no indication of a problem prior, i.e. check engine light, noise, etc. we took it to a local dealer & luckily made it just before the warranty wore off. the steering gear was replaced. on november 26 my wife was driving the car and once again while in motion the steering wheel froze, and got worse when stepping on the brake, no indication of a problem prior. she was just barely able to pull in the driveway. the most frightening thing was an hour before she was on the highway with children in the car during rush hour. once again took the car to the local dealer & this time the power steering pump was replaced. it was cracked. i think the car is a danger to those in it & those sharing the road with it. i have never heard of steering failing in a car. i see other people having the same problem with the traverse and am shocked that there has not been a recall. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 chevrolet traverse. the contact stated that while driving approximately 15 mph, the steering wheel became difficult to maneuver. the failure was recurring and on one occasion, the contact was forced to crash into a mail box in an attempt to regain control of the vehicle. the contact was not injured. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnosis however, the technician was unable to duplicate the failure. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 86,000. . ..updated 01-10-14 *bf the consumer was informed, the vehicle needed a new rack and pinion and steering pump. updated 01/13/14

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 chevrolet traverse. the contact stated that while driving 35 mph, there was an abnormal noise coming from the front end of the vehicle. the vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that rack and pinion needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired but the failure recurred. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 82,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 chevrolet traverse. the contact stated while driving 10 mph, she tried to turn into a parking lot and the steering wheel locked. she had to use extreme force and turn the steering wheel in order to unlock it. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer for inspection. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the vin was unavailable. the failure mileage was 100,000.

First happened when i was turning into my driveway. got halfway through my turn when i suddenly couldn't turn the steering wheel. stopped just short of hitting a car parked on the street. backed the car up and it could steer again. did it two more times since. once when my wife was pulling into a parking stall at the mall and again making a turn on a side street. was told would have replace several steering components. would be replaced with the exact same kind of parts as before. haven't driven the vehicle since. *tr

Since october of 2013 i have been having issues with my power steering locking up or becoming so tight while trying to turn at slow speeds that i have to force a turn. i have take it to my dealership to have it looked at after reading the numerous complaints for the same issues. i was told that i would need a new pump and rack pinion steering, which was told it would cost me $1300 and is not covered under the power terrain!!!! i was also told there have been numerous complaints on the power steering making noises, in which chevrolet replaced the power steering in the 2012 and newer models and which research shows that there are virtually no complaints in the 2012 models. i have almost been in accidents because the steering would like up while turning in intersections! *tr

Complete loss of power steering at speeds less than 20 mph. my wife couldn't turn the wheel. car was taken to the dealer and the power steering pump was replaced. cost of $641.84. *tr

Power steering would lock up for 5 approximately seconds when making a turn at a slow speed 25 mph or less. seems to be doing it more frequently 1-2 times per day. had it looked at a chevy dealer could find no thing wrong. had it at a local repair shop he changed the power steering fluid-stated that it appeared really dark and dirty. this did not help with the steering problem. *tr

When attempting to pass (at a normal speed & situation) accelerator sticks & continues speeding up until i slammed on brakes(which didn't stop me) & pulled the accelerator up at the same time, this has now occurred 5 times over the last 7 months, it is terrifying when it happens, i have 3 kids in the vehicle with me most of the time, then today when it happened right after it started working properly i lost power steering when i apply my brakes!! not impressed with this vehicle right now! *tr

Was pulling into my driveway, at very low speed(less than 5mph) and the steering became very hard to turn. i stopped and had to pull very hard on the steering wheel to continue into my carport. this happened several times after that and the next day also. today i had a doctors appointment and it was back to normal. my wife is afraid to drive it because it may happen again. what are we supposed to do? is there a recall on this? *tr

At low speeds the steering becomes unresponsive as in locks up and will be very hard to turn if at all for a many seconds, which can seem like an eternity when you are turning from an off ramp or across traffic. shifting the card to neutral and increasing the rpm's has not effect, keeping the vehicle in drive the problem will eventually fade and the power steering will come back to normal. it doesn't do it every time, but seems more likely to happy when coming down from speeds above 30mph and then slowing down to make a sharp turn into a drive way or ramp. *tr

Intermittent loss of power steering at low speeds when turning into driveway or in and out of parking spaces. also was especially bad when backing into a parking space on a hill, when i could not turn the wheel at all until i started applying gas to get the car moving. at these times the steering wheel is extremely hard to turn. i have taken to the dealer for inspection twice and cannot duplicate the problem while there. the dealer gets no error codes on diagnostic and cannot see any leaks or mechanical problems. they have contacted gm who says they do not have any bulletins related to this matter. this problem is very unsettling and potentially very dangerous. i hope gm will investigate and come up with a solution. *js

I purchased a used 2010 chevy traverse in january 2013 and 6 months later heard a whining noise in the vehicle. had a local chevy dealer check the issue and they said there was a leak in the rack and pinion. cost to fix was $1,600 and there was nothing the dealer would do to assist with costs because the warranty was expired. i could not spend that kind of money at that time and considering i just purchased the vehicle used 6 months prior it made me angry. i have yet to fix the problem and had it evaluated again by a different shop...same cost $1,600. very frustrating!!! was this a recall in 2011? any ideas on what to do? i am looking for assistance to contact gm for covering this issue. *tr

Started losing power steering suddenly. this usually happens at low speeds, but not always. took to dealer in louisville ky that wanted ~$1300 to fix stating the problem was a leak in the rack and pinion part of the steering mechanism. *tr

Just days after purchasing a used 2010 chevy traverse with about 52,000 miles, the steering locked while sitting in the driveway. it took several attempts to get the steering wheel to work. then in november the car began to make a loud screeching noise. it occurred during idling as well as during acceleration. turning became more difficult and the noise corresponded to accelerating, turning and slowing down. it went to the chevy service station on 12/20/13. they replaced the power steering pump. i picked the car up on 12/24/13 and it sounded the same. i was told that it would get better in a few days after the air left the new pump. the car did not get better and continued to sound terrible. it was also shaking and was scary to drive in. it went back to the shop on 12/30/13. they have replaced the power steering rack, pin and hose so far. as of 1/8/13 they can not fix the car. the mechanics say they have been working with the gm hotline and are at a loss as to why it won't stop making the noise or driving correctly. *tr

My 2010 traverse has about 56,000 miles on it but for about the last 300-500 a humming noise has been coming from the steering column. it has gradually been getting worse and i had started noticing what i would describe as varying degrees of pressure needed to steer it. it would also occasionally have what i describe as a hiccup feel when i turn it once in awhile. took into dealer to have it diagnosed and was told that new pump is needed. also there were a couple of leaks coming from the various locations of the steering system. quoted a replacement cost of $1653. chevrolet, please fix this situation! *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 chevrolet traverse. the contact stated that while driving 15 mph, there was a loss of power steering without warning. the contact mentioned that the failure recurred intermittently. the vehicle was not taken to a dealer for a diagnostic. the manufacturer was not notified of the defect. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure and current mileage was 91,791. ..updated 10/30/13 *bf updated 10/31/2013 *js

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 chevrolet traverse. the contact stated that while attempting to park the vehicle, the steering wheel seized and became difficult to turn. the failure recurred intermittently. the dealer stated that the steering gear needed to be replaced due to a leak. the vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred. the manufacturer was notified. the approximate failure mileage was 60,000.

While turning right at a corner the power steering unexpectedly stopped working and i had to muscle the steering wheel over to avoid colliding into a car that was stopped at the stop light. i don't believe my wife would have had the strength to do this since it happened so unexpectedly. i had a few more similar occurrences all at low speeds and when turning. when i brought it into the dealer i found out that the power steering pump was failing. the car is only 3 1/2 years old and since it's over the warranty i had to pay the very expensive cost of replacing the power steering pump. since then when i've searched the internet i've seen numerous other complaints at around this mileage for the 2010 traverse. *jb

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 chevrolet traverse. the contact stated that while driving approximately 30 mph, the steering wheel was hard to turn. the contact also mentioned that the failure occurred intermittently. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not notified. the approximate failure mileage was 80,000.

Steering pump not functioning properly, hard to steer at low speeds. the dealership has told me i need a new one. why is this happening? this should be a recall item. mileage is not high enough for such an important item to give out. occurred after a 5 hour trip. *tr

Notification that was sent to chevorlet's web site i recently purchased a used 2010 traverse. took it on the typical two mile test drive found no issues. after owning it now for several months i'm having problems with the power steering failing. it is usually at lower speeds when turning in driveway or parking lots. today i was in the middle of sharp curve, low speed, approx. 35 mph, and the power steering went out just as another car was coming from the opposite direction. i was able to react properly and keep the vehicle on the roadway. my concern is that my teenage daughter who is just learning to drive would not have reacted properly in that situation and people could be serious injured and/or killed. my other concern is that this seems to be a common issue with this model, according to nhtsa web site and many other traverse owners web forums. i cannot afford to replace the steering system and this is my family's primary vehicle. i'm left with putting money over safety. please document this complaint. *tr

When driving at a low speed, the vehicle makes a terrible whining noise. i took it to the dealership in march 2014 and was told the power steering pump and rack need to be replaced which would cost me close to $3000 out-of-pocket, which i cannot afford. upon researching, i saw numerous complaints regarding the same issue with the traverse that have resulted in power steering failure. i also see that gm recalled chevy malibus and cobalts in march 2014 for the same issue, however, a recall was not issued for the traverse. i feel this is a huge safety concern that gm should issue a recall for. does there have to be fatality before they are held accountable?!?! *tr

When turning left at stop light or parking lot at low speed the steering wheel is very hard to turn. the dealership advised that the power steering pump needed to be replaced. *tr

Power steering does not work at low rpm's. *tr

When i was turning into my driveway the steering got very stiff almost to the point i felt the steering was locking up. i have a small child and fear that this is a big problem with the traverse.

I was turning into my driveway when the power steering locked. by very "brute force" i was able to force it back thus avoiding a collision with the retaining wall. later in the week i took the car to a auto body repair to remove a minor dent. the owner of the repair shop experienced the same "lock" up when driving the car into his garage. i then when on line googled "2010 traverse steering problems" i was taken back at the plethora of complaints and comments filed. i took the car to an independent mechanic and he & i reviewed the complaints. we concluded it was the rack & pinion thus it was replaced. no so. the lock up occurred again last evening when turning into my driveway. this morning i took it back to the mechanic. he is replacing the rack and pinion he put in yesterday and putting in a new power steering pump. try "chatting" with a gm representative on line. they are experts at deflecting questions and giving you the run around. since gm owes the united states$ & i am part of the us, the next step is to contact my senators and congress person and demand a recall of the traverse' from this debtor. *tr

The power steering has started failing at lower speeds, such as turning corners, turning into the driveway, and pulling into parking spaces. this is dangerous! what the heck is chevy going to do about this? two of my neighbors had the exact same issue and were told by the dealer to "trade it off". we love the vehicle, but can't keep putting our family in danger. repeat, what is chevy going to do about this? the more i research online, it seems that almost all of the 2010 traverse's have this same problem. recall????

When i purchased my vehicle, i noticed steering was more difficult than my 2001 nissan altima. it is a heavier vehicle so i at first attributed the issue to that. as time has passed, the steering has become more difficult and actually requires force at slow speeds or in parking lots to turn the vehicle. i noticed this has become hazardous when pulling out of my neighborhood and being unable to fully complete the turn as the steering had completely locked up. i have a 2 year old and a baby due in october. i purchased the car because i needed a safer vehicle and am very disappointed that i feel no safer than i did in my nissan altima. i have seen the number of comments on this issue and am extremely concerned chevy hasn't done anything about it. i will not buy another. *tr

Vehicle power steering fails completely and intermittently at low speeds. this is an extremely urgent safety concern and a recall must be issued to correct this issue. *tr

Our 2010 chevy traverse ltz is currently in the shop reference heater/defroster not working and engine light coming on. the vehicle has been in the shop several times this year for ac problems, fluid leaks and numerous sensors failing. the steering problem was discussed with repair facility on several occasions. the problem according to them could not be duplicated. we had to ask the dealership personal to physically set in the vehicle and attempt to turn the steering wheel. a new power steering pump and return hose was replaced total cost $658.93. at present this has solved the problem. approximate total cost this year for repairs $3100.00. at this point we have no confidence in general motor products of anykind. we have all documentation for these claims. *tr

My traverse loses power steering at low speeds. when pulling into or out of a parking spot there is no power steering. also occurs when turning to make a u turn when at low rpm. this started in july 2013 and has been getting worse. i have taken to the dealer 3 times without any confirmed diagnose. the lack of power steering makes it very difficult to maneuver in parking lots or parking garages. they noted a small leak on the rack and pinion but do not believe that it is related to the power steering problem at low speeds. the steering works great at speeds higher then 30mph. *tr

Power steering assist went out and wont return now truck has 80000 + miles. *tr

The steering locks up when turning left or right at very low speeds such as when turning a corner or pulling into a parking space. i would have hoped by now gm would have issued a recall given the potentially dangerous implications of not being able to steer your car. clearly, this is a known and growing issue. http://www.arfc.org/complaints/2010/chevrolet/traverse/steering/problem.aspx. *tr

We have a 2010 traverse and like many owners the power steering has quit working at slow speeds and is a safety hazard. it is impossible at slow speeds to turn the steering wheel. it is very bad when trying to park the car or even turn at red lights. this is something that numerous owners have had issues with and is a faulty system. it started with a small noise coming from the steering wheel then progressed to every once in a while not turning to now never working at slow speeds. if this was not a common problem with these cars then i would send it to mechanic to get fixed but since there are many cars effected and even a class action lawsuit over this issue it does not seem right to pay so much money for a car that is such a safety hazard. please for all the adults and kids riding in these cars check into this issue and get gm to fix all their safety issues and not just a few select models. this system from my understanding uses some of the same technology that the safety recall in place on certain models. *tr

I purchased a 2010 traverse ls brand new from a dealer and am now having serious issues with the steering locking up. my wife was driving the traverse into our neighborhood, as she turned off the main street into the neighborhood the steering locked and she could not come out of the turn. she had to almost stop the vehicle completely for the steering to unlock so she could continue. she almost hit a parked car and was almost struck by another car as she had to stop half way through her turn to unlock the steering. the problem only continued to worsen, steering locking more often and causing numerous near misses. almost striking cars, buildings, fences and curbs. it mostly happens at slower speeds, 35mph or less and has caused us to hit our garage trying to pull in or out. it has, however happened a few times at higher speeds while driving through curves on the highway and city streets, 45-70 mph. was taken to the dealer in december 2013 and diagnosed as rack and pinion issue. rack and pinion has been replaced twice(not under warranty) and the problem still exists. i have done research online line and this is happening to many people that own traverse, acadia, enclave and outlooks all with the same steering components. something needs to be done to get gm to rectify this issue before someone has to die or be seriously injured due to this problem. *tr

The power steering has started failing at lower speeds, such as turning corners, turning into the driveway, and pulling into parking spaces. this is a dangerous scenario and is getting worse and worse. it is easily duplicated. my mechanic says it is a common problem with the chevy traverse and they see it all the time. *tr

This car started having problems with making turns at slow speeds about a year ago. has been getting worse, despite adding power steering fluid. fluid not leaking. have found many reports about this problem from others online. have also found a class action lawsuit that has been started appx 1 year ago. i noticed that gm has recalled the chevy malibu for power steering problems, but not the traverse. this is a very dangerous problem. i must have it fixed, but do not have the money to do it. should be covered by gm. is a defect with the design. *tr

At 15 mph or lower steering gets so hard to steer almost feels like it is locking up. i see others having the same problem. this is a hazard to the driver and passengers and others cars! *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 chevrolet traverse. the contact stated that the power steering failed while the steering wheel was being turned. the dealer stated that the power steering fluid needed to be flushed. the vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred. the manufacturer was notified. the failure mileage was 40,000.

At low speeds, loss of power steering. requires extra force to turn steering wheel. took to dealer and dealer replaced rack and pinion, and did not fix problem. charged 1200.00. *tr

Power steering abruptly failed on multiple occasions when making turns at approximately 25 mph or less causing near collisions over the course of a couple weeks.. frequency continued to increase so it happened multiple times on a daily basis. took to local dealership and they couldn't find problem so changed power steering fluid and flushed system. later that same day the same problem occurred again. i am concerned to let my wife drive the vehicle. dealership thinks the power steering pump needs to be replaced. searched online and it appears many traverse owners are experiencing similar issues. is there a potential recall on this issue ? *tt

We are having the same problems and issues that so many other owners have listed on the site. the power steering goes out at random times with no set pattern, rhyme, or reason. however, as many others have noted, it seems to mostly occur at low speeds(less than 25 mph), going into curves, and parking lots. ours began to do this about three months ago. the most frightening event occurred when my wife was driving with our three young children and the steering became so stiff and unresponsive while negotiating a curve on the highway she nearly veered off the road. i took the traverse to a certified independent mechanic that i have used for 20 years and trust completely, he could find no problems. the computer codes came back showing no issues and the power steering fluid was at recommended levels. this is a major hazard that needs to be addressed immediately before someone is seriously injured. there is obviously a flaw somewhere with the vast number of complaints that have been filed. i noticed a pattern of so many owners taking the traverse to a dealer to have either the power steering and/or rack and pinion replaced, but to no avail as the problems with the steering still persisting. i am old enough to have driven older model vehicles and farm implements that did not have power steering and on the random, unsuspecting occasions when this problem arises the difficulty of handling this traverse is well beyond attempting to maneuver one of those machines. the steering virtually locks up. my wife is 5' 110 lbs. and i am 6' 200 lbs. and it takes everything i have to turn the wheel when this happens. i am no longer comfortable with my wife driving this vehicle, especially with my three young children in tow. a solution needs to found asap. otherwise unfortunately, my patriotic feelings will subside and i will go back to buying honda products again. *jb

I bought this car as a used vehicle in 2010 with approximately 29,000 miles on it. i first begin noticing steering was an issue june of 2013 when driving at a slow speed and turning into the driveway or parking lots. i thought it was my alignment and went and had the tires rotated and aligned and it still continued to be hard to steer. it has gone from gradual to dangerous!!!! december of 2013 went to nc and had to drive on some very steep hills with very sharp curves and several times it was almost impossible to negotiate the turns. went and had the power steering fluid checked and it was fine. january of 2014 had the power steering fluid checked again and was still fine. the steering still continued to get worse with faster and slower mph rates. march of 2014 (i had my 10 year old daughter with me) while negotiating a curve at approx. 30 mph i could not get the wheel to turn to the left and almost went through the guardrail on the right and into a creek. i had a semi truck behind me that almost hit me as well. i finally got it turned in the nick of time. it really scared myself and my daughter. god was with us that day. on april 12, 2014 while having plenty of time to make a left hand turn from a main road onto a secondary road the steering went out again and in the meantime a car was coming from the opposite way and almost t-boned the vehicle with my daughter in the passenger seat. this steering issue is a daily continuing thing regardless of which way i turn or the speed. something has to be done regarding this before accidents results in fatalities. my tires on my vehicle are only 14 months old and worn out in the front from where it is so hard to turn (and the tires on this type of car are not cheap) *js

Loss of power steering and intermittent locking /failure/ inability to turn the steering wheel at slow speeds. difficulty turning into parking spaces - no power steering. nearly missed my turn, heading directly at a road sign trying to make a right turn at approx 15 mph. had to completely stop (in the middle of the road & oncoming traffic) to 'unlock' the wheel and complete my turn. this is a safety issue that should be corrected before someone gets hurt! took 2010 traverse to chevy dealer - they said it was a 'common problem'. just paid $700 to replace my power steering pump & hoping that fixes the problem. my car is only 3 years old! chevy should be ashamed. *jb

As the mileage on this vehicle reached around 80,000 at times it became more and more difficult to steer at slow speeds such as in parking lots. i thought it might had been the tires but after having all tires replaced and aligned this steering issue continues. the problem is steadily becoming worse. i have not experienced any steering problems at speeds of 55+ but i see from the other complaints that it may be an expensive repair. *tr

At slow speeds the power steering fails. this is very dangerous because it usually occurs in parking lots. why is there no recall since this is a common and dangerous problem??? *tr

I noticed my steering wheel stiffening during turns. i took my vehicle to the dealership & was told i needed to replace the steering gear and power steering pump. these repairs are not covered under my extended warranty & will cost $1,876.31 to repair! the service advisor could not explain to me how the complete steering gear goes out on a vehicle w/52,000 miles on it! i am beyond angry, not to mention, i also feel violated. i have researched to see if other owners are having similar issues and there are hundreds of people with the exact same issues! these are not a coincidences! these parts are faulty & should be recalled and fixed at no cost! *tr

On the day of purchasing the vehicle, only seconds after signing the contract, i was told the vehicle could not be driven because of safety recalls. had to wait three weeks before getting the vehicle i purchased, very nervous after that situation. then after only having the vehicle approximately 8 months the power steering pump, water pump, and leaking hoses went out with over $1,500 in repairs. three days after the second incident they called, after i brought the vehicle in for more business to get an oil change, tires rotated and a safety check, and they told me the tires were unsafe and they would not rotate the tires. they further stated that they would replace the tires for approximately $800. i am now on the fifth (5th) day without the family vehicle and very stressed. a 20 year veteran retired from the united states marines is asking for your support and assistance to make a bad deal right. here is my statement on the last 9 months with dealing with prince chevrolet of albany, 2701 ledo road, albany, ga 31707 and my breaking down lemon and vehicle. i am outraged that this is the type of customer service i am receiving from chevy and i want out of the contract. i no longer want anything to do with chevy or gmc. i hope to hear back from someone other than the local prince of albany staff, they are obviously giving me the run around. thank you prince chevrolet for not supporting your veterans and customers of georgia with the right service. a great way to show the example of the rich stealing from the poor. i am not rich enough or powerful enough to hold prince chevrolet of albany, 2701 ledo road, albany, ga 31707 accountable but ask that someone assist me so i can just get back to a normal life and transport my family around safely. *tr

Upon trying to park the car, the power steering failed. continues to do this when either parking or turning. *tr
