We have classified the 429 complaints from 2005 Chevrolet TrailBlazer about FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE into the following categories.
My gas gauge light came on today right after i filled my tank and fuel shows empty. light went off and fuel gauge moved to half mark, then light came back on and went back to show empty. i researched and found out that over 895,000 owners have had this problem and over 600 have reported it to the nhtsa. i have not had an accident, but have read reviews of many that have due to this problem. many have asked to recall this problem and i agree due to the amount of vehicles this has happened to, including mine. some fixed it and the same problem recurred the next year. my extended warranty ended in june so i'm not covered and the cost is very high. please make this a recall so we all can fix this problem and not go broke. the dealer should face up and take the responsibility to fix the fuel gauge problem by recalling this before someone gets in a serious accident. *tr

After filling up my tank prior to a long distance trip to florida i noticed that my fuel gauge read empty. i was forced to estimate the gas mileage and hoped i wouldn't run out of gas. several weeks ago i ran out of gas on a major street in the atlanta area after i calculated that i had still approximately 30 miles before empty. i was able to pull over into a parking lot not without causing a major back up and potentially being involved in an accident due to speeding drivers in the area. i had contacted gm in the past regarding this problem and they apparently feel that this issue is normal wear and tear on the vehicle. it seems a bit far fetched that this is normal wear and tear when on every chevy blog and message board all you see is frustrated chevy owners complaining about the same issue. several months ago i received a notification from gm recognizing the problem and offering to pay half of the repair costs. now, how insulting is that??? you obviously now that there is a problem with the quality of your product and you have the audacity to make it seem like you're helping us out by paying for half of the repair? they should issue a recall on this problem and stand behind their supposed quality product. i hope that someone in the federal government can entice these scam artists to resolve this issue and stop putting people's lives on the line in an effort to save a buck!! *tr
Fuel level sensor stopped working. *kb
We are experiencing a defective gas gauge--it registers empty or it may move up a bit or go down some. we are unable to determine how much fuel we actually have. i go on a trip of 350 miles one way every month to visit my mother and it is a constant worry. i am so afraid i will run out of gas on the turnpike--we just never know. we did get a letter from gm saying they were aware of the problem-interestingly enough, though they will not pay to have this dangerous situation affecting hundreds of thousands of vehicles fixed--only half, which we feel is unfair. this is a problem affecting a great number of people, simply by the fact they sent the letter--they need to make it right by paying for the whole remedy before someone is killed as a result of this faulty gas gauge. we would like to be a part of a class action suit against gm for the full payment. *kb
Two days after filling tank, i started having problems with the gas gauge. i had driven about 250 miles, but the gauge still read 3/4 full. my wife then took the truck to work that afternoon, thinking there was 3/4 tank of fuel left she did not fill up for the 80 mile round trip. half way home at 3:00 am she runs out of gas in the worst section of phoenix you can imagine. as she works in an inner city hospital, she drives through this section of the city daily and we have always made sure she has a reliable vehicle for the trip. fortunately a police officer stopped and stayed with her until aaa showed up. i would hate to think what would happen to a woman alone in a drug infested area of the city while her vehicle breaks down for a faulty fuel gauge. *tr
When filling up tank with gas, fuel gauge indicates empty and low fuel light appears. blower fan switch works intermittently, *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet trailblazer ext. the contact stated that the fuel gauge would not display an accurate reading while driving at various speeds. the vehicle stalled once due to the fuel tank being empty when the fuel gauge did not indicate such in its reading. the vehicle was not taken to have the failure diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 123,400.
I have a 2005 chevrolet trailblazer with a faulty fuel gauge. a year or two ago the fuel gauge started working intermittently. sometimes it would show an accurate reading and other times it would not. now the fuel gauge just shows empty 100% of the time, no matter how much fuel is in the tank. due to this issue, i have ran out of fuel and stalled several times. as you can imagine, this is a major safety concern. when the vehicle stalls power steering and braking are lost and it can be difficult to maneuver a large vehicle like this without those systems. i took the vehicle to the dealer and they are stating that the problem is a bad fuel sending unit and the cost to repair is over $600. researching the issue online i have found that this seems to be a widespread issue. this is unacceptable and a recall needs to be ordered. *kb
Fuel gauge reports incorrect amount of fuel. reads empty when full. indicator light comes on saying empty when 1/2 a tank or fuel tank of gas. *tr
I've had my 2005 chevrolet trailblazer a little over a year no problems until now. about a month now fuel sensor light continues to go off . it doesn't matter if it's a full tank, have full or empty. the light goes on all the time. always worried about running out of gas. shouldn't have to go to the gas station every other day just to feel safe. *tr
When tank is full, fuel gauge reads as empty and low fuel light comes on. a little while later, the gauge will move up and then back down and light will come back on. not sure how much gas is in tank based on the fuel gauge. *tr
The trailblazer i bought seem to be more of a headache the a sport vehicle. i wish i had look better at all the information the was out there. i will not purchase another one, or recommend this vehicle to anyone. sorry i bought it. *tr
Fuel sensor has to be replace again (2nd time). *kb
1) fuel gauge indicator shows an empty reading despite just being filled. after driving for 40-50 miles gauge will show about a quarter of a tank for a short time and then go back to empty. when problem first started the gauge was all over the dial. 2) speedometer erratically will show a speed at a greater speed than actually traveling. recently showed going 110mph despite traveling along with traffic flow of approximately 65 mph on major interstate highway. *tr
Failure of fuel level sensor. *kb
2005 chevy trailblazer fuel sensor worn out. *tr
Gas gauge shows empty, then full then empty again check engine light always on, also cable holding spare tire, rusted while driving tire hanging. *tr
Fuel gauge reading erratically, often reads empty after fill-up. suspect faulty fuel sending unit as stated by local mechanic who said this is a common failure form this manufacturer.
Gas gauge stopped working about 2 years ago. shows as empty even when the tank is full. it's very frustrating as you have to always remember to fill up to count the miles. i received a letter from chevy a couple of years ago letting me know that they are aware of the problem and will cover 50% of the cost of getting it fix. but why do i have to pay at all? it's not my fault, i should not have to pay at all. *tr
Fuel gauge failing. 2005 chevrolet trailblazer lt 4x4 4.2l i6 the fuel gauge will state an incorrect amount of fuel remaining. after filling fuel the gauge will state empty. after about 20 miles driven then the gauge will slowly come back and read full. as the fuel is used up in tank the gauge will be off by up to a 1/4 of a tank. *tr
My car's gas gauge reads that i have 0 gas when i do. i've filled it up so many times, its costing me too much money to keep filling it up. cost to repair $1000! *tr
Fuel gauge was inaccurate. would read full when empty, empty when full, etc. had faulty fuel sending unit replaced by dealer to solve problem. *tt
My 2005 trailblazer's fuel gauge showed a reading of almost 1/2 full, but was actually empty. as a result, my trailblazer's engine died while i was driving on the interstate and i narrowly missed being rear ended by a tractor trailer. before i could get off the highway. i researched the situation and found that wildly fluctuating fuel gauges are common in this gm model. in my opinion this defect could lead to a serious accident.
Gas gauge reading empty after complete fill-up of fuel. gas gauge does not register correct fuel level at all. *tr
Fuel gauge stopped working. when i fill up at the gas station, the gauge says e and the light comes on. i never know how much fuel i have or when i will run out! *tr
2005 chevy trailblazer. faulty gas gauge. was fine today 6/14,2011 until i filled up. gauge went from full after filling to showing empty and has not rest itself. noticed in past that it seemed to be stuck at 1/4 tank but took almost 20 gallons to fill. gauge reset after a few miles and seemed to be fine until today. and now today, gas gauge reads empty on a full tank. *tr
This complaint is concerning a defective fuel level sensor. on or near the incident date, the vehicle's fuel tank was filled to the top. this was the first time the tank was completely filled in several months (due to high gas prices). upon driving away from the pump, the dash fuel gauge read 'empty'. prior to topping off the tank, the gauge was reading approximately 1/3 full. the gauge continued to read 'empty' until the level was down to approximately 7/8 full. after that, the gauge varied between less than 1/8 full to actual level and sometimes would read 'empty' briefly. after the fuel was down to less than 3/4 full, the gauge appeared to read normal until filled again. this pattern basically has continued to get worse. now, when the tank is topped off, it still reads 'empty' but doesn't read 'normal' until down to about 1/4 tank. i have resorted to logging mileage and date when topping off the tank and refilling before the tank should be empty based on mileage.
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet trailblazer. the contact sated that the fuel gauge failed and the gauge would read empty whether the fuel tank was full or empty. the contact reset the trip computer to be able to determine when the vehicle would run out of fuel. the vehicle was taken to the dealer who advised that the fuel pump sensor failed. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 76,000 and the current mileage was 81,000.
While driving down highway, fuel gauge began moving radically from empty to full and never stabilized. each time the gauge approached the "empty" the warning light and alarm would sound. constant movement of fuel gauge and alarm is distracting to driver. inaccurate fuel measurement causes concern for diver which is an unnecessary distraction from driving that could lead to accident.
I have a 2005 chevy trailblazer that about a month ago the fuel light came on and started to ding. i had just filled it about just an hour brfore that. i changed the gas cap and that didn't work. the gas gauge still doesn't work right and it's still dinging. i have to keep putting gas in it just about everyday so i don't run out of gas. *tt
My gas gauge suddenly began malfunctioning after filling the tank. the gauge went down to empty, setting off the visual and audible indicators for an empty tank. after driving for awhile, the gauge began to slowly rise. this now happens every time i fill the tank, but now the gauge never goes up to the full point, usually staying around half of a tank until it starts to decline again. i can no longer trust the gauge. i have heard that this is becoming a common problem on some of the chevy models, particularly the trailblazer.
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet trailblazer. the contact stated that the fuel gauge constantly displayed an inaccurate reading. the vehicle was taken to an independent repair shop where the contact was informed that the fuel sending unit needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 90,000 and the current mileage was 104,000. updated 07/20/11*lj the consumer stated he ran out of fuel on three occasions. the consumer stated the fuel gauge read full, when there was no gas and it read empty, when there was gas. updated 12/02/11
2005 chevrolet trailblazer consistently register incorrect fuel level causing an unsafe condition where the driver cannot determine current fuel level. gauge instantly reads empty upon filling , and then moves erratically while driving. this condition is unsafe as it can cause the engine to stall at speed while in traffic. this according to research is a common problem in this vehicle and like gm models. *tr
Last summer my fuel gauge started acting poorly with misreadings. my vehicle is a 2005 chevy trailblazer. at the onset of the error i ran out of fuel in a poor part of town causing me much distress. a couple months later gm said they are aware of their fauly equipment and only offered to pay for half of the fix. the error they claim is a faulty fuel sensor. *tt
Tl*the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet trailblazer. the contact stated the fuel gauge displayed the incorrect reading and the fuel light indicator displayed that the fuel was low when the fuel tank was full. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 101,000 and the current mileage was 101,200.
2005 trailblazer gas gauge is broken, fills up and then it will light up like it is empty, only reads the gas up to 1/4 of a tank. *tr
Fuel gauge indicated almost 1/2 tank of fuel but was really empty. stalled in fast lane of 4 lane highway at 70mph. near rear-end collision. defective fuel pump sender assembly. *tr
Gas gauge failure. *tr
I bought this vehicle in dec 2010 for my birthday, then started smelling gas so took it back to dealer and they replaced the floater in gas tank and it was fine for awhile, then one day i went and filled up the tank, got in and started it up and it said empty and had the light on (when i knew it was full), since then i have had to rely on the miles to know if i still have gas, which is hard to do if you don't fill it up all the time. i am afraid of having my grandsons with me one day and running out of gas because it don't work..please recall this it is very dangerous to not know if you have enough gas when you have to go somewhere. this should not have happened since it was just fixed a few months ago. will this be an ongoing problem? i grew up with chevy's my dad use to say we were chevy country and my uncle's vehicles were found on the road dead (ford) i use to believe that chevy was best vehicle made, but this is changing my mind. *tt

The fuel gauge has failed. *tr
Fuel sensor fault causing fuel gauge indicator to fail and/or function intermittently. problem was diagnosed by chevrolet dealership and per current ongoing defective investigations, issue is the same as indicated by nhtsa action number: dp10001 spoke with gm customer complaint group and at the time of this submission was informed they would respond within 24 hours with an option. *tr
Gas gauge quit working. stepper motor replaced, suspected fuel sensor malfunction. seems to be a very common defect in these vehicles. *kb
Fuel sensor is damaged. regardless if tank is full or 1/2 full. the fuel gauge always reads empty, with the light on. after a long period of driving, fuel gauge may go up to 1/4 tank but will go back to empty after car is turned off and restarted. only way to be safe and aware of fuel level, is to fill up the vehicle with gas and restart the mileage.
Manufacturer : general motors corp. component(s) : i requests that nhtsa open an investigation into the two safety issues i have listed below. first issue: performance/reliability of the fuel level sensor installed in model year 2005 chevrolet trailblazer vehicles. my 2005 trailblazer fuel tank level sensor is defective and could result in a subject vehicle running out of fuel, stall, and being rear ended by another vehicle. also may 2, 2011 this is a very serious safety issue. please check into it right away. i was driving my 2005 chevy trailblazer home tonight and the headlights went out while going down the road. i turned the switch off and back on. still no lights, turned them off and on and low beam to high beam then they came back on and i was able to drive on home. i could have been killed. my 1995 lincoln town car had the same problem and it was some kind of recall had to do with the auto timer. is there some kind of recall to fix the chevy trailblazer amongst the thousands of complaints that are already against the 2005 chevy trail blazer? *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet trailblazer. the contact stated that the fuel gauge malfunctioned after adding fuel to his tank. the gauge would read empty and through out the week it would fluctuate between empty to full and a half of a tank. the vehicle was not inspected by a dealer nor had it been repaired. the manufacturer was contacted and informed him that there were no recalls. the failure mileage was approximately 52,500. updated 06/17/11 *bf updated 06/30/11
I am the owner of a 2005 chevy trailblazer i have been having problems with the fuel gauge i put gas in my car and ten minutes later it says empty i have ran out of gas on the interstate almost causing accidents. *tr
