We have classified the 27 complaints from 2002 Chevrolet TrailBlazer about ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING into the following categories.
Fan clutch totally failed. no prior warning, fan clutch failed causing the trailblazer to lose ability to gain speed/power. *jb
The fan clutch on my '02 trailblazer is starting to go bad, with engine roaring at intermittent times, per the dealer, who refuses to warranty it, even the vehicle has less than 17k on it. it is out of warranty by 8 or so months. gm has sent the wrong message. called chevy, their ears are closed although they offered a maintenance deal if i would say i am satisfied. such a deal since their service prices are sky-high. unacceptable. *jb
The manifold cracked on 2002 trailblazer with 89000 miles on it. *jb
Tie rods, multiple transmission module problems, airbag, taillights, stop, turn signal rear problem, electrical/ wiring, radio, hvac, pressure control,2 batteries, 2 fan clutches, among other problems. *jb
My 2002 trailblazer with 70,000 (just outside of warranty) has a bad fan clutch. the dealer is trying to charge me $500 for a part that costs $230 at multiple local parts stores. my complaint, however, stems from the fact that a 5 minute internet search yielded 8 other trailblazer owners who have had this exact problem. all 8 of the cars has less than 80,000 miles. this is obviously a problem that gm needs to react to and issue an optional recall. *jb
Engine fan noisy... runs too fast/high. a couple mechanics have said fan clutch is the problem and needs to be replaced. transmission doesn't seem to shift smoothly... and seems to be related to this engine fan speed. *nm
Loud roaring noise - service engine soon light appeared - took it to the dealership - fan clutch needs to be replaced on my 2002 chevrolet trailblazer. *nm
Thermostatic-controlled clutch on radiator cooling fan was not disengaging and "service engine soon" warning lamp was lighted. "on-star" service probe confirmed problem in power train/cooling system. dealer confirmed defective cooling fan clutch and replaced fan clutch assembly. this is a suv that rarely sees travel off of paved roads. all service performed at dealership. cooling fan clutch should not be failing at 57,520 miles. "goodwill warranty" covered most of repair expense. *jb
Have had many of the problems i read on posted complaints: new engine required within nine months-one year of owning new vehicle, inside driver door panel replaced three times, change oil and service engine lights staying on, hood not closing properly, back glass needing replacement, fabric problems in back seat, etc., etc. and this morning it is a $200 problem with the headlight switch. too many things to even remember or name, but chevy has a pretty thick file on me and my vehicle. *nm
1) since owning my 2002 chevrolet trailblazer, on occasion, the car would drive and sound like a semi (loud and heavy when i accelerated). 2) july 19, 2005, with 51000+ miles, the suv continually was loud and heavy when i accelerated. finally, the engine light came on. 3) i took it to a shop and the mechanic said it was the electric fan clutch and he had seen it brake down in several trailblazers. cost to replace: $732.33. i still have the old part if you need it.
4 w/dr light goes to 4hi/ all wheel dr/4 low without warning at anytime. the computer mode was replaced once under warranty at the moment it doesn't seem to be actually shifting. also had a loud jet sound coming from the engine as if it was laboring and had to have the fan clutch assembly replaced @ a cost of over $800.00 . *jb
While driving to lax airport after rounding curve to get off on airport ramp, tranmission failed. vehicle would not move. local airport police assisted to get me towed ($45) to police lot. notified onstar and was towed to closest chevrolet dealer, albertson oldsmobile chevrolet in culver city, california. after three days the dealer had not even looked at the vehicle. i then ha car towed to aamco transmission in orange california where after less than 24 hours i was informed transmission was completely burned up. a pump had failed and the inside of the transmisson assembly was filled with metal shavings. in october of 2003 the transmission had failed and the car had to be towed to gateway chevrolet in la mirada, california. car was repaired. i have also had many other problems with this vehicle including brake lights, windshield wipers, heating & air conditioning system.
I brought this suv from the dealership and i started having problems with it a month after i brought it. the car air conditioner stop working and the transmission was making a horrible sound. i took the car to the dealer to get fixed three times. all the times i took the car it came back the same way that i took at first. i also took it to a different dealer to get fixed and they also didn't fixed it. i want to cancel this suv purchase. mainly because even before t brought the suv the salesperson at the dealer added $5,000 to my income so i could qualify to get the suv, but that was completely a lie. right now i'm having many problems at work; that's the main reason i want to cancel the purchase of this suv, which is just giving me many problems. *jb
2002 trail blazer transmission wasn't changing gears, wouldn't go over 30 mph ,sounded like an airplane on a friday night without a vehicle until monday service department wasn't open on weekend dealership installed pressure control solenoid on valve body, filter and pan gasket and replaced cooling fan clutch with a cost of $961.78 mileage 61,024. *ak
2002 chevrolet trailblazer caught on fire in the engine compartment. *mr while on the highway, the vehicle would not accelerate, subsequently smoke and flames had come from the hood which was caused by the defective motor. the consumer requested reimbursement for the cost. *sc *jb
Engine cooling fan clutch stuck engaged, causing engine service light to come on. dealer(moritz chevy) charged $725 for repair of which $400 was labor.*ak
Sharp turn steering locks up. passenger seat belt gets tighter and tighter doesn't release pressure. 4 wheel drive not working . tapping sound in engine. the only thing the dealer has done is replace power steering pump and within 5 miles it was not working again. *jb
2002 chevrolet trail blazer 67180 miles. failed cooling fan clutch. www.mycarstats.com indicates others have the same problem. gm turns a blind eye. cost to repair is just under $600. the fan runs constantly. it is a design failure. i will never buy a gm vehicle again and i will urge all the people i know to never buy gm again.*ak
2002 trailblazer acted like transmission going out, took to dealer they upgraded computer. front right low beam wired burned and melted, took to dealer they wanted to charge 250.00 plus labor for light assembly when all it needed was a piggy plug, bought plug at napa and fixed myself. never have had two back lights working at same time... cant take to dealer to get the recall work because it seems that these vehicles are using a "weak" oil pump and my trailblazer has been in shop for last month or more waiting to be fixed. the weak oil pump caused damage to rod bearings, main bearings, and crankshaft. gm says out of warranty and my customer service specialist said "i'm sorry" about 10 times but she was still closing my folder and marking dissatisfied. she can't help me because i'm out of warranty. i hate this vehicle. i have found quite a few recalls but can't do most because its in the shop. i never got any recall notices.*ak
Engine slippage, then started making a knocking noise. we took it to a private mechanic that informed us of a recall notice by general motors on the cylinder sleeve and that the vin of our 2002 trailblazer fell within the parameters of the recall notice. we had the vehicle towed to the dealership, who informed us that the tie rod went through the engine block. we are in the process of having a new engine installed. general motors will only pay for 30% of the repairs even though the engine has been well cared for, has 60,000 miles on it and mechanics have stated that the cylinder sleeve may have contributed to the problem.*ak
Re defective 2002 chevrolet trailblazer 4x4, problem with 4 wheel drive, a/c, batteries, taillights and electrical problems. *bf while driving 55 mph the vehicle's 4-wheel drive went into four wheel high or low intermittently. the vehicle's battery loses it's charge. the taillights went out and the blower in the air conditioner had to be replaced. fuel splashed out of the filler while the consumer was filling the tank. the vehicle stalled intermittently. *nm
There is a very strong odor of fuel from the exhaust. *mr after gm campaign 03012 and 03012, denley code 07222 was performed, that was when the odor was present. *sc *jb
2002 trailblazer. engine stalls while at low engine rpm. with it in park can hit the gas and rpms will go down below 500 then recover. has actually died once. almost died while pulling into a parking spot. almost died when coming to a quick stop at light. at first thought it only occured with the ac on but have declared it to do same with the ac off but not as bad. noticed several complaints of same issue here and on edmunds.com. ours hasn't stalled at highway speeds but i fear it won't be long before it does and my wife is the primary driver and is now pregnant with our second child. vehicle has been to dealer at least three times for this issue. gm needs to put us (all trailblazer owners) in a safe vehicle and diagnose problem nationally before someone is killed. *ak
Two weeks ago the clutch fan on my 2002 chevrolet trailblazer engaged before i left the house and never disengaged on a 15 mile trip to and from work with varying speeds (as low as residential, and as high as 70 mph). this is highly unusual for it to 'stick' in the engaged position. usually it engages on a cold start and is off within a minute or two. i went so far as to turn off the a/c figuring this could trigger the command to engage the cooling fan. i called the dealer i usually have my work done at, and they just said to bring it by. on the approximate 25 mile trip from my workplace to the dealer, at some point the fan decelerated from the 100% engagement i had been experiencing for two days, it illuminated the service engine soon (ses) and the cruise control failed (it was in use at the time, and was dangerous in that it suddenly decelerated on its own at highway speeds). the cruise control was not functional at all. upon arrival at the dealer, the fan had seemed to resume normal speeds, i relayed what had happened on the way here, and they hooked up the tech2 device, read the codes, cleared them, turned the light off, and then went on a test drive. no defect was noted and everything went for approximately one week. currently, the fan engages itself to 100% at nearly all times except at high rpms or at highway speed. this occurs whether the a/c is on, whether it's a cold start, or a warm start. i can drive 20 miles on the interstate, and on roads at 40 mph the fan will slowly engage itself. at 40 mph there should be enough ram air cooling. if i accelerate at a rapid rate, keeping the rpms high, the fan slowly disengages...but rengages shortly after the acceleration is ended (downshift, deceleration in speed, etc). this has become troublesome as it is surely causing excess wear and tear on the engine, is wasteful in that it causes outrageous fuel consumption, and is dreadfully loud on acceleration. currently, it has not turned on the ses light.*ak
Upon startup (cold or warmed) there are high rpm's, the idle is high, engine races and does not idle down. when shifting into drive and giving gas there is low acceleration and the truck won't go over about 15 miles per hour. after driving about 2-3 blocks the truck shifts and then runs normal. intermittent problem, dealer states if there is no problem we can't diagnose or fix it. black box recorder is needed to install until problem is reproduced and can be recorded. *la
While driving appox 50 mph, got hung in traffic. all of the sudden my engine coolant hot warning lamp came on. i pulled off and had to call my father to come get me. he added a small amount of water to the system. the car drove fine for the next 10 miles. after driving again for about 30 miles, it began to over heat again. pulled off and let it set for about 30 minutes, once again added a small amount of water. drove fine for the next couple of days. my husband and brother flushed the cooling system and added dex-cool. drove fine for a day or so when it began overheating again. parked the car until the following weekend when my husband flushed the cooling system again. ran fine again for a couple of days. all of the sudden it started overheating again when i noticed that it occured during "stop & go" traffic, but when moving, the car would cool back down. my husband then replaced the clutch fan. worked fine for one day when it bagan overheating again. took the car last week to a dealer where they checked the code and it was wrong, so they entered the correct code. worked fine for one day when it started overheating again. don't know what it wrong with this thing!!!*ak
While driving 40 mph steering pulley failed. vehicle lost power. dealership was notified, but did not resolve the problem. *ak the vehicle switches itself into 4-wheel drive while the manual switch is in 2-wheel drive. the taillights failed. at new computer had to be installed. the rack and pinion needs to be replaced.
I have a 2002 chevy trailblazer. in recent months it has suddenly stalled numerous times, on street driving at approximately 30 mph, and at highway driving at about 65 mph. during the highway stall the car lost power steering and braking control and was fortunately steered off to the side of the road, with great physical effort since the power steering was lost. the stall causes an abrupt stop of the car without warning. i have had the car in for testing and repair at romano cheverolet in syracuse, ny as well as curry cheverolet in scarsdale, ny. neither shop has been able to diagnose or repair the problem since the car's computer is not registering the stalls. they replaced the fuel filter several weeks ago but the car suddenly stalled on me in normal street driving at 30 mph a few days later. i have spoken to cheverolet customer service and they say they are "investigating" the problem. i have sent copies of nhtsa service bulletins on this car to curry cheverolet but they claim they are not applicable. the service bulletins clearly state that there are problems with stalling due to an engine and engine cooling problem, but curry cheverolet claims that my engine is fine and that the nhtsa service bulletins do not apply to my car. however, they can't fix it. i have suggested to curry cehverolet that the car computer is defective and needs repair or replacement since it has not registered the numerous stalls. however, they claim that the computer is fine, even though it is not registering the stalls and what they are caused by. the people i have spoken to at curry cheverolet are the dealership manager, mr. conte, and the repair shop manager, dennis. i have spoken to duane cox at cheverolet customer service, and his manager ms. patricia frey. mr. cox's phone number is 866-952-4368, extension 57020. ms. frey said i could reach her via mr. cox, her assistant. the cheverolet customer service reference number for my car is: 1-219-824-950. *la
The clutch fan on our chevrolet 2002 trailblazer went out and the fan stayed on. it resulted in reduced engine power because the fan was pulling so much power from the motor. when our mechanic called for parts, the chevrolet dealership had 15 on stock. apparently chevy is aware of this problem but has not recalled it.*ak
Intermittently when trying to start the vehicle, the vehicle would not start properly. while driving 25 mph, the vehicle stalled, after a few seconds the vehicle would restart as if nothing had ever happened. the starting problem has occurred more than seven times. *jb
While driving 40 mph, the engine light illuminated, then the vehicle stalled. this caused the consumer to lose control of the vehicle, hitting a wall. the consumer had the vehicle towed. the dealership tried to repair the vehicle 7 times, but did not resolve the problem. the air bag also failed to deploy during the accident. *ak the pcm failed due to a circuit inside, fluid leaked from the power steering hose, the engine revved high and was loud when the vehicle was started, the consumer saw sparks under the hood fuse block at the same time the gauges fluctuated and shorted, the right rear tail lights were inoperative, and the fuel gauge made a whirring sound when the vehicle was started. *sc *jb *cb
Engine check light came on while driving. vehicle was taken to a dealership but dealership indicated they didn't know what component failure caused the engine check light to come on. dealership serviced the vehicle and the consumer picked it up. the engine check light came back on within 2 weeks. vehicle was taken back to the dealership. when the consumer picked the vehicle up there was a clanging noise while driving.*ak
Trailblazer service engine light on, engine reving, seems to be fan clutch stuck in high speed, causes poor acceleration, poor gas mileage, and costs over 500 dollars to repair. dealer in small town states they have replaced several in the same year model truck. due to the high cost of this repair, i am forced to drive my vehicle until i can come up with the money to repair it. hopefully it will not damage any other parts in the mean time. there seem to be several complaints that deal with this same thing. also, the rear brake lights keep going out .
2002 chevrolet trailblazer was involved in an accident as a result of the rear tail light being inoperative. *mr the consumer's vehicle was rear ended while he was slowing down in traffic. this suv had other failures to include the windshield wipers, engine(6 times) , battery (2 times) , dash board, head light and various electrical problems. *nm
Numerous problems. car stall 3x , battery went out, windshield wiper worn and tail light out, considered not safe. *bf the vehicle was hit in the rear. the dash system went out and the vehicle idled rough. *sc
Failure of the engine of a 2003 chevrolet trailblazer in november of 2003. after changing the engine, broken cylinders in the new engine (after less than 1000 miles!) in january of 2004. *la
Clutch fan is causing vehicle to be sluggish on take off. makes a loud roaring noise, burns more gas. *jb
G.m. sent notices to costumers in june 2003 of possible engine cylinder problems in early 2002 chevrolet trailblazers. this pboblem is quite serious and has in the pistons, develop a knock or slap.this can and does cause damage to cyl. walls and other internal parts. g.m.has offered to replace pistons only.this is not what should be done in a vehicle with only 17,700 miles.itis my feeling the engine should be replaced .g.m. does not.i have spoken to chevrolet customer and was told only pistons would be replaced.this would involve nearly if not completly rebuilding the engine.this is not acceptable to me as i belive i an intitled to have the engine of a new vehicle not a rebuilt engine acceptable for an aged vehicle. *ak
I've had to replace the brake lights on my 2002 chevy trailblazer twice now. having almost been rear-ended numerous times and if it wasn't for other drivers telling me my brake lights were out, i'm sure there would have been an accident by now. also at 41,000 miles now the "service engine soon" light has come on as well. *la
Electronic exterior rearview mirrors and power seat engage and operate by themselves. dealership cannot fix the problem. *ak the memory for the mirrors and seat would not keep their position. when the consumer entered or exited the vehicle the systems would reset to a new position. occasionally they moved while the vehicle was in motion. the dealer has replaced many components but the problem still exist. the check engine light illuminated. the dealer replaced the oxygen sensor. the a/c control mode button became stuck and was noisy. the dealer replaced the a/c module head. the left windshield wiper chattered and skipped. the dealer replaced the wiper insert. the 4wd switch fluctuated between 4wh and a4wh. the dealer inspected the vehicle and replaced the transfer case select switch. *ts *nlm
Transmission went out couldn't drive-repaired/ rear window won't roll-up/seatbelt won't retract, later fixed, but still won't work on occasion/ brake lights have gone out 5+ times repaired still not operational/ water pump exploded/rear window won't lock first try/ check engine llight stays on. *ak
While driving vehicle would stall intermittently causing the vehicle to pull off the road. consumer made contact with dealership. *ak
Consumer stated that while driving, they lost steering control causing an accident. dealer notified. *ph consumer was cut off by a truck losing control. regained control then brakes felt like a lack of pressure. steering loosened then locked up causing the consumer to spin out of control. gm stated there were no recalls. consumer and the insurance company feels there is. insurance co. stated it could've been the vacuum to the engine shutting down or the lower control panel snapping which causes these symptoms. *ph
While driving at 70 mph odometer dropped, causing the vehicle to slow down to 10 mph. dealer notified. *ak
Vehicle constantly displays "service engine lamp", air bag module had a problem, rear brake lamps blew out, 4 wheel drive mechanism on dash was replaced, ignition never turned off all the way, killed battery because it drained battery. *nm
It appears the truck is suffering from a major computer defect. with all fuses in tact, many functions no longer work (remote access, radio functions after ignition turn off, automatic volume increase on radio when accelerating). additionally, the 4x4 torque converter switch does not light up and appears to be nonfunctional, the airconditioning quits and after alleged repair, stays on all the time regardless if set to air or vent, the rear hatch is defective and can't be opened, the tail lights have burnt out three times and two headlighrs have burnt out.
My vehicle has been in the shop for these reasons and more. faulty back light- dvd systems. on top of all these it has had three recalls in the nine months i've owned it. bought it new!
Engine knock and rattle on cold start, worsens when loaded (in gear). after several minutes, knocking diminishes. coincides with intermittent cold engine stall with no ses light set.*ak
Engine stalls after start regardless of transmission gear selected. will restart, but is stalling after backing out into a major local raod with heavy traffic, posing a rear end collision risk.*ak
I received a notice from chevrolet stating that some 2002 trail blazers may experience a crackling of an engine cylinder bore liner. this will cause engine noise, poor performance, and or stalls with no engine restart. however, they will only repair after the vehicle is damaged. i have 2 children and do not think it is safe to be driving a vehicle that could stall at any time or provide "poor performance". i have experienced many problems with the 2002 trailblazer - ranging from the vehicle stopping as i'm going 55 mph, the service engine light staying on, i've received 2 recall notices and then this special policy notice. i think the engine should be replaced for the safety of the driver and other drivers on the road. *jb
