Recently reported ELECTRICAL SYSTEM problems on 2004 Chevrolet Tahoe

The speedometer randomly moves from say 30 mph to 120 when you have not increased your speed. when you stop it stays at 120 until you restart the vehicle then it will only come down maybe to 80 when you are standing still. i called the dealer and they want 600 dollars to fix it. i have researched this site and others and have found many people with the same problem. i believe chevrolet should take care of this problem because it is an obvious manufacturing defect and could lead to injury. *tr

My 2004 chevrolet tahoe has a speedometer that is non-working. i contacted a chevrolet dealership about repair and it will cost $500.00. i checked the internet and found multiple parties with the same problem. i am requesting that nhtsa require chevrolet to place a recall on this repair with so many requests out there. as stated by others, this is a very expensive automobile and with many others having this same problem it should be taken care of by chevrolet. *tr

Speedometer failure. it does not give accurate speed readings. at rest, it reads 20mph and on the highway it reads up to 120mph erratically. *tr

2004 chevrolet tahoe z71 4x4 model. speedometer is malfunctioning and constantly reads over 100mph. car only has 30k miles on it but, of course, the warranty just ran out. *tr

2004 chevy tahoe with only 41k miles, speedometer acting erratic, marking unrealistic speed, ex. 40mph when actually driving 65mph. *tr

All of a sudden the speed odometer jumps to 90 and we were almost stopped. then it stayed on 0 for a while we were driving, then just jumps around. it is never accurate. checked with dealer and they reported to us that this has been a real problem with this model of vehicle. they said it was the gage cluster going out and there have been lots of them recently coming in with this problem. and the repair cost is between $450.00 - 500.00 . i feel this is a manufacturing malfunction and they should repair these vehicles free of charge to vehicle owners because this is unsafe and it should not be malfunctioning like this. its not just a few vehicles with this same problem its alot!! *tr

Normal operation and use, never off road. the speedometer has completely failed. the vehicle has about 40,000 miles. at this time, nothing has been done to correct the problem. *tr

I have a 2004 tahoe at 41k miles, suddenly the speedometer malfunction; when i ran at driveway the speedometer showed over 120 mph; even when i stop, turn off engine the speedometer still show over 120mph and stuck like that forever. *tr

Bought a used 2004 chevy tahoe with 73,000 miles on july 5th 2007, went on vacation 2 weeks later and the speedometer got stuck at 60 miles per hour and know is very erratic and gets stuck at different speeds all the time. also fuel gage does not work at all is backwards on the gage so never know how much gas is actually in the vehicle. *jb

Tachometer & speedometer failed at approx. 75,000 & 80,000 respectively. speedometer failure presents a safety hazard. intermittent failure of lights on dashboard system. *tr

The speedometer is not consistent in detecting actual speed driven. sometimes it will read 40 mph when i am actually driving 60 mph. this is dangerous, as this can cause an accident when driving around curbs. got a quote from dealer to repair which will be around $500. my daughter owns a 2004 trailblazer and has the same problem.*ak

2004 chevy tahoe had speedometer failure. it went haywire for a couple of days and then went all the way to 140 and stayed there. was told there is recall but only up to 70,000 miles. mine occurred around 80,000. *tr

Tachometer and speedometer are not giving correct readings. they can be 3,000rpm at idle or 100mph at about 40 mph sometime shutting off car resets it. *tr

The entire instrument cluster failed including the speedometer and fuel gauge. *tr

Speedometer inoperative on 2004 chevrolet tahoe and other 2003 and 2004 chevrolet products. apparent that a recall should be issued, but has not been. gm agrees to repair 7 yrs or 70,000 miles which ever comes first. however, they did not notify the customer until 4 and 5 model years later that there is a problem. *tr

Speedometer began malfunctioning and a clicking sound was coming from the dash somewhere. sometimes will register speed properly but then will say i'm traveling at 0 mph or 120 mph. *tr

2004 z71 chevy tahoe. speedometer failed at 54,000 miles. the dial hangs at 90 or 120. i took my vehicle to chevy dealership and was informed that there is no fix other then replacing the entire cluster panel. $800 to replace cluster panel. the dealership will not replace defective speedometer for free. vehicle out of warranty. *tr

Speedometer intermittently quits working. you can be driving along at 60 mph and 50 miles later, the speedometer has gone to 0 while you are traveling down the interstate. if you stop, turn off the engine and get out of the car, then restart the car, the speedometer will work again for a little ways. *jb

I have a 2004 chevrolet tahoe and recently the speedometer started acting funny. it would show i would be going 60 mph over what i was actually going. when parked it would read 45- 60 mph. now it stays stuck at 120 mph. i called the dealership, and told me the entire cluster would have to be replaced for about $500. also, said that it would be 90 to just look at the problem. i did some research ,and found that there are hundreds of people to whom this is happening to. what made me mad was that this happened 7500 miles after my warranty ran out. *ak

Failure of speedometer. *ak

My husband was driving on the interstate on his way to work in our 2004 chevrolet tahoe with current mileage of 39,000 miles, and the speedometer suddenly locked up at 53 mph, it will not move. *jb

Speedometer stuck it will be at 50 sitting in driveway. *jb

2004 chevrolet tahoe speedometer reads wrong and then doesn't read a speed at all. on a 70 mile trip, my speedometer registered speed for the first 10 miles and then read 0 miles/hour the rest of the 60 miles. *jb

Tl*- the contact owns a 2004 chevrolet tahoe with an odometer reading of 80000 miles. the contact noticed that when driving for a long period of time and coming to a complete stop then start moving again the speedometer will stay at zero. the contact stated that the only way to get the speedometer to work again was to turn the vehicle off, then let it sit for a moment and restart. this problem made the contact run out of gas several times since the gas gauge did not working properly, the oil gauge wasincorrect as well. the contact took the vehicle to the dealer, and they told him that the instrument panel needed to be replaced. *ak

Speedometer has completely failed at 46,000 miles therefore it is impossible to know how fast i am driving. *nm

Driving vehicle, looked to check my speed and showed i was driving around 30 mph i know i was driving faster than that because my rpm's showed 2000. then speedometer changed to 110, then continued to fluctuate back and forth. this has been going on 6-8 months now, to no avail dealership stated in the past no recall to fix this problem. mileage of original incident 60,000-65,000 miles. *jb

2004 chevy tahoe faulty speedometer started occurring in january 2007 as of today 2/14/07 it is inaccurate each time auto is started. never resets itself. have not had it repaired as the costs are too expensive for an issue that is clearly a gm problem. this needs to be recalled as there are thousands of people with same issue. *nm

Several months ago i started to notice problems with the speedometer on my 2004 chevy tahoe. it does not register the correct speed sometimes. seems to be getting worse. there is no specific time or driving condition that this occurs. last noticed the problem while driving on the turnpike. the speedometer reads 35 when i was actually going over 60. something really needs to be done about this. i cannot afford to have a new speedometer put in the vehicle at $500.00. *jb

Speedometer erratic on 2004 chevy tahoe. says i am going 120 parked, and 30 when i am going 70. *jb

Speedometer failure- vehicle in a parked position and speedometer states that vehicle is traveling at 50 mph. when traveling at a speed of 65 on highway speedometer shows traveling 120 mph. *jb

I have a 2004 chevrolet tahoe lt. the speedometer has been acting very erratic - reading 35, 45, 75, etc. while stopped and 125+ while traveling at 50 mph... i have read hundreds of similar complaints and my chevrolet dealer immediately knew what the problem was just by giving a brief description and wants to replace the entire instrument cluster for $400+ this is outrageous - so much money was spent on these vehicles and chevrolet cannot acknowledge that it is a defect which can very easily pose a safety hazard. see attached link to view hundreds of similar issues: http://www.topix.net/forum/autos/chevrolet-tahoe/t2bgkbgi55eknu77c/p2 *jb

The speedometer works fine sometimes but some other times it starts off at about 35 mph and counts up from there. it is hard to figure out what speed you are going and i am really afraid of getting a speeding ticket or going to slow and causing an accident. i think this needs to be looked into so maybe we can prevent future major problems. also a number of friends have had the same problems with gauges in their chevrolet vehicles. *jb

Erratic operation of speedometer. other gauges seem to fluctuate for no apparent reason. *nm

As my 2004 tahoe approached 43k miles the speedometer began behaving erratically. within 2-3k miles it stopped working completely. now it only will rise as high as 20-30 mph. *jb

Speedometer will malfunction while driving. it will read 35 mph when i am doing at least 70 mph. other times it will not register anything at all. i have read many posts on the internet that many other gm full size trucks/suvs are having the same issue. this is definitely not safe and when you are trying to exit a highway ramp at the posted speed you can not due to the malfunctioning speedometer. need a recall to repair these speedometers before some serious accidents occur. *nm

While driving my 2004 tahoe down the highway my oil pressure indicator dropped to zero. i pulled over and shut it off. i checked the oil, which was fine, and re-started the vehicle. the pressure returned to normal. two days later the same thing happened except this time i did not get oil pressure back. after having it towed to a shop, needless to say it worked again. at this time i was advised that the oil sending unit may be faulty and paid to have it changed. this did not fix the problem and finally it failed for good. the repair shop verified that the engine did have good oil pressure and that it was an indicating problem. i found a company on-line that repaired instrument panels and chose to take the vehicle home and remove it myself to send off for repair. on the way home, my speedometer malfunctioned and now reads 25 mph at a stand still. one problem i can understand. two problems this close together tells me that this instrument panel is junk. after researching this i have found many others with the same problem. i am extremely upset about the amount of money i have spent for such poor quality. i would hope that gm will back its products and re-call these panels or at least cover the repair costs for the individuals with instrument panel problems. *nm

Speedometer on my 04 tahoe isn't working, pegged at 120 mph when stopped. *jb

My speedometer has gone faulty. it reads 55+ mph at a stop. it is less than 3 years old and 4,000 miles past the 36,000 mile warranty. this is a very dangerous problem and it seems as if i am not the only customer with this problem. please take a look at this website. http://www.topix.net/forum/autos/chevrolet-tahoe/t2bgkbgi55eknu77c/p4. *nm

Speedometer and tach not working, speedometer stuck at 120 mph, tach jumps all over the place. this is a safety issue and i have seen on topic.net thousands of people not knowing what speed they are going! *jb

Speedometer registers 120 mph at all times. dealer wanted $700+ to replace instrument cluster. pulled cluster myself in ten minutes and sent to instrument repair company in sacramento, ca who replaced all the lights and stepper motors for $155.*jb

At about 60,000 miles the speedometer began acting erratically so you couldn't tell how fast you were going. it consider this dangerous. the speedometer is now usually reading simply about 120 mph at all times. still no recall on this item that i know of. after checking a little bit on the internet, it is obvious that this is an overwhelmingly large issue for gm owners. *jb

Speedometer stuck at 120 mph at all times. there is no way to tell how fast vehicle is traveling at any time. tahoe just reached 36000 miles this weekend. what a shame since this is the only vehicle we have to transport our 8-month old in. *nm

Tl*the contact owns a 2004 chevrolet tahoe. while driving 55 mph the speedometer would stick at a particular speed. after twenty minutes of driving, the speedometer would fall and remain at zero. the dealer has not inspected the vehicle. the failure mileage was 75,000 and the current mileage was 86,000. the vin was unavailable. updated 02-01-08 *bf updated 02/01/08 *tr

While driving our 2004 chevy tahoe the speedometer acts erratically going anywhere from -0- to -120-. we feel that this is a very scary feeling when driving either on the freeway or driving in town. we feel that the chevrolet corporation should do a major recall on this problem. it is a huge problem. if chevrolet takes pride in there vehicles they will do a recall on this problem and fix it for all of us who drive there vehicles. *jb

2003 chevy tahoe, 44,000 miles. speedometer failed. stuck on 40 mph. dealer/manufacturer will not cover repair, which is very expensive. *jb

Speedometer is erratic and unreliable. on chevy suv chat sites this is a apparently a common problem and related to a defective part. *jb

Faulty speedometer in 2004 chevy tahoe. speedometer reads 30-35 mph above actual speed. *jb

Speedometer intermittently indicates vehicle's speed well below actual speed. problem seems to occur after vehicle has run for 2 to 3 hours. on interstate, running with normal traffic at approx. 70 mph, speedometer will indicate 35 to 40 mph or not work at all. cruise control also fails to work when speedometer becomes erratic. *nm

One day while traveling on the highway at around 70 mph, the speedometer was acting strange. the speedometer was jerky. once i got off the highway and came to a complete stop the speedometer went pass 0 mph. then when i got going again on city streets the speedometer was off by 20 mph. eventually the speedometer stop working on that trip. ever since that day the speedometer has been jerky and sometimes reporting the wrong speed or not working at all. *jb

Speedometer started sticking. sometimes it fixes itself. other times it stops and won't go below 30. today it wouldn't go lower than 60. also, it will be buried and you have no idea how fast you are going. *jb
