Steel brake lines to abs control and other steel brake lines rusted through and leaking, must be replaced before brakes fail.

Driving to pick up my son from work on side streets, traveling about 25mph when my brake went to the floor.almost rear ended car at stop sign. got out of truck and found large spot under my truck, brake fluid. had it towed to brake shop and mechanic informed me my brake lines were rusting though and needed to replace all brake lines. also told me he has seen this with 3 or 4 other chevy trucks lately. found other complaints after telling my story. heard this is a known problem with these trucks..i bought this truck new & have had it rust proofed 12 times. thank you

Unloading my boat, brake peddle went down to floor, didnnt know what happened, no light appeared on dash, secondary breaks didnt work either, held with parking brake.

About two days ago when i pushed my brakes they felt spongy and when i pulled into my driveway i could smell brake fluid.today i went to move the truck to check it out. the brakes were even more spongy,so i pushed them hard and the brake line ruptured above the fuel tank.the front brakes would not stop the truck, so i had to use the transmission to stop the truck. it must have sprung a small leak two days ago when i noticed the fluid smell and spongy feel.good thing i wasn't driving on the road when it burst today, because it would not have stopped. *tr

Rusted out brake line to rear brakes along frame rail on my 2002 silverado 4 x 4. thank god no one was injured. this truck i purchased brand new and has never seen any winter weather until 2013. i was involved in a unrelated accident in jan. 2013 and the truck sat at a body shop until the end of may 2013. this year i had to use my truck. should a brake line have rusted thru prematurely? i don't think so. i think gm should be accountable for this failure and reimburse all people affected by this substandard part failure. *tr

Went to get safety check, mechanic noticed brake fluid leaking from undercarriage and noticed leak in brake line. brake line corroded and rusty with puncture. *tr

While driving , had to make a sudden stop, appled the brake peddle hard, brakes appled then went down to to floor. brake lines behine the cab rupturd, do to badly rusted lines. *tr

Total brake failure. started my truck and discovered i had no brakes. *tr

I was backing out of my driveway and the brake peddle went to the floor. the rear brake line on the drivers side blew out. it's heavy rust. all the lines look the same way. i can not drive this truck. it is unsafe and i will need to put around $700 into it to get it safe again. *tr

Was backing out of the driveway and when i tried to stop the brake pedal went all the way down and i had no brakes. there was no warning whatsoever that i had a braking problem. when i looked underneath the truck i could see that the brake lines are very corroded and one is leaking. it looks like they will all need to be replaced and the truck will probably need to be towed in to have this done. it sounds like this will be a very costly fix. i bought this truck new and it has always been garaged and well taken care of. *tr

Brake lines rusting , leaking, breaking and no brakes. *tr

On trip home from a vacation. pulling a 28 ft fifth wheel camper and a motorcycle trailer. on interstate 65 north bound when an older gentleman merging into traffic thought it was a good idea to come to almost a complete stop to let other vehicle merge in front of him. at which point i had to lock the brakes and just after the abs started to come into effect the brake pedal went to the floor. luckily just before i was going to impact the vehicle in front of me he pulled away. i took the next exit off the interstate pulled to the side of the exit ramp to discover brake fluid dripping on the ground just forward of the drivers door. inspected the brake fluid level to discover it was empty. all brake lines on this vehicle will have to replaced at an estimated cost from a dealer at $1500.00. this is a safety issue and should be in a recall status. *tr

Same story as every other 99+ silverado: the brake line burst behind cab and all brake pressure was lost. brake system defects are far more dangerous than a faulty ignition switch. why are gm and nhtsa ignoring these complaints? *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 2500 hd. the contact stated that the anti-lock brake system light illuminated for an extended period of time. the contact had to restart the vehicle to reset the computer, but the failure recurred. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the wheel speed sensor needed to be cleaned. the vehicle was not repaired. the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 05v379000 (service brakes, hydraulic). the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 140,000.

On my 2002 silverado, the abs activates at low speeds causing brakes to pulse and increase stopping distance. clearly nhtsa reference #05v379000 states that this only affects certain states. my vehicle falls into the manufacturer's recall date range as it was manufactured in august 2001. chevrolet refuses to fix this issue under a recall and are telling me that they do not issue recalls that are state specific and that my vehicle does not qualify. needing help getting this issue resolved. *tr

I was driving home in my 2002 silverado 2500 hd, when i can to a stop at the stop sign, my brake pedal went to the floor and i could not stop. my truck went through the intersection, but luckily there was no oncoming traffic. i brought my truck to a local auto repair shop, where they replaced just faulty brake lines due to them rusting out prematurely. my repair bill was over $1500 dollars. *tr

Middle brake line corroded in half causing brakes to fail. now need to change all brake lines at a $289.00 cost with additional cost of 8 hours labor. was told caliber bleeders are probably corroded too so will need new calibers. this has been an ongoing issue for the past several years. when will gm solve problem when someone finally gets killed? *tr

I have a 2002 silverado 2500hd with very low miles(63,868), extremely well taken care of vehicle. my problem occurred, fortunately for me, while i was sitting at a stoplight. as i sat waiting for the light to turn green, my brake pedal went to the floor. i wasn't sure what happened and thought maybe i'd pump my brakes up and everything would be fine. no such luck. i pulled over into a gas station and looked under my truck and saw my fluid leaking very badly, coming down over my gas tank. since i had just left my home and was very close, i decided to drive it home and have a better look. as i drove the half mile drive, my brake fluid completely drained dry. fortunately for me, there was no traffic on the streets and no obstacles in the way. anyway, when i got home and looked under my truck and saw that my brakeline looked like it completely exploded and was rusted out, i called my dealer and asked if there was a safety recall for these brake lines, and they informed me that there never has been. i made an appointment for them to repair my brakeline, so i had my truck towed to my dealer, and they preceded to work on my truck. as they inspected it, i was informed that "all" of my lines were rusted out badly and unsafe. this cost me approximately $700 to repair all of the lines, but my biggest concern is that this could have turned out a lot differently. we have 8 children, 12 grand children, and fortunately this vehicle was not on the highway with any of the little ones in it. i have been driving for over 30 years and i feel very fortunate that circumstances were what they were. anyway, after surfing the web, i found that i am not alone, this in my opinion is a safety hazard and something should be done before a tragedy happens. *tr

Had just exited the freeway and corroded brake line broke. lived at the end of the road so was able to drive slow to at least get it home using the emergency brake. examined all brake lines and all are so corroded they need to be replaced. was lucky it didn't break away while on the freeway. chevy tryin to kill their customers? *tr

Had to get on the brakes pretty hard, the line under the drivers side floor burst due to rust and corrosion. *tr

I just purchased my truck in june from a previous owner in south florida. as far as i know, the truck has been in florida since it was purchased new. on friday, november 8, 2013, i was forced to brake heavily at an intersection. i felt the anti-lock brakes activate and the truck stopped. i proceeded to the next intersection and was traveling approximately 50mph. when i stepped on the brake pedal, the pedal went to the floor. i immediately down shifted in an attempt to slow down. luckily, there were no vehicles in the right turn lane so i made a very dangerous right turn nearly striking vehicles in another lane. i attempted to brake again and only the passenger side rear tire would lock up. i was able to stop the truck with the emergency brake and distance. i thought the master cylinder went out but upon further inspection. a brake line has split and is expelling brake fluid. the location of the hole is where the brake line passes directly below the driver's door before the connection to the anti lock brake system. how is this not a recall. i could have killed myself or someone else. i have never seen a brake system failed where there is no brakes at all. *tr

After dropping off a boat for winter storage, i was leaving the storage location and attempted to apply brakes and the pedal dropped to the floor. i had to take a very slow route home as the brake pedal continued to drop to the floor anytime the brakes were applied. in a couple of instances when the brake pedal was pressed hard, the abs system did activate. finally had a chance to pull this vehicle into my garage for examination on 11/8/13 and found the brake lines under the drivers' floorboard at the frame-rail extremely corroded to the point of failure of one of the five lines. the others are most certainly not far behind. this vehicle is mainly used in the winter months. i am grateful that the problem surfaced now before the snowmobile season when i am hauling a 24 foot trailer with four passengers and four snowmobiles on roads that are not in the best shape to begin with. this could have been a very bad situation to say the least! gm needs to fix this issue before someone is seriously injured or worse - these obviously are not isolated incidents. *** please note that there has yet to be a single warning lamp to come on after applying the brakes at least twenty five times - no mil, no brake, nothing! *** i will be taking a complete series of pictures of the condition of these lines before the repairs are performed if they are needed for this complaint. *tr

when i started out of my driveway & hit the brakes, they went to the floor. emergency brake slowed, but would not stop. brake lines behind left front wheel on top of frame had hole(s) rusted in them & fluid running out. emergency brake would not work properly because of leaking right rear wheel seal that had greased the emergency brake shoes. truck had to be hauled to a garage, where it is now. *tr

I went to move the truck to hook up a trailer and the pedal went to the floor. looked under vehicle and brake lines were rusted and brake fluid everywhere. *tr

I was driving down the road when all of a sudden the brake pedal went to the floor. come to fined out one of the brake lines rusted out.

Tl* the contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 2500 hd. the contact stated that while driving 60 mph, he attempted to engage the brakes but the petal abnormally traveled to the floor board. the contact stated that after inspecting the vehicle he noticed that the brake lines were corroded. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure and current mileage was 107,000.

On restarting the vehicle moments after having driven it without issue, the brake pedal felt spongy, and with more pressure, sunk to the floor. fluid was found to be running off of the truck frame under the drivers door. no warning light came on at the time. later, apparently when the fluid had drained down enough, the brake warning light came on. on inspection, all of the brake lines were found to be very badly decayed just forward of the abs unit, with one having failed. this is not an off-road truck. it has had conservative road use. fortunately, i was not towing my 8000 pound trailer at the time. i recently sold a 1972 chevrolet which had never required any brake line replacements. why are these relatively new trucks brakes all failing? *tr

I had just gotten my fuel pump replaced at a local garage, was driving it home and found the brake pedal going almost all the way to the floorboards. i pulled over at the first safe place, found a fluid just gushing out around gas tank area on the drivers side. it had just rained for the last few days, so i thought it was just water. i drove a little further, then decided to drive it back to the garage, only about a mile away, after smelling brake fluid and verifying the my reservoir was seriously low. more dripping on the drivers side, this time i'm sick to confirm it is brake fluid. took it back to the garage, he said he'd look at it tomorrow, but i said i'd drive it home all of 2 miles down the street. got home no issues, cause i used the e-brake, and found the reservoir nearly drained. nothing around the wheels; this was the only leak. now i'm thinking the brake lines must have been seriously rusted (again!) and gotten disturbed when they replaced the fuel pump. i had this happen shortly after i bought the vehicle used, about five years ago. i paid good money back then to have the 'stainless steel' brake lines to the abs head replaced back then. why are they rusted through again!?!?! had no idea they ran up by the top of the tank, but hey, why not? i'm certain the line have rusted out again - why?!?!? they are supposed to be stainless steel; since when does stainless ever rust? i haul a 12,000lb fifth wheel; thank god i wasn't hauling at the time this happened (again!) and killed myself and my entire family in an auto crash. just sick of it; take care of your bad engineering chevy! *tr

Brakes failed suddenly. we were lucky that we were only going about 20 mph. brake light did not come on and still does not show a problem. rusted brake line ruptured and brake fluid comes out when the brakes are applied. i just sold a toyota 1995 4wd that has been exposed to the same environment and there is very little rust compared to the chevrolet. it looks like to me that all the lines should be replaced. i have not yet had it repaired. this could have cause a very bad accident. we are not driving until it is repaired. *tr

While driving on city streets , i went to stop behind a car at a stop light and the brakes went to the floor with no warning. i hit the car from behind and luckily no one war injured but minor damage to the rear of the car was observed. after the incident, oil continued to leak from the line under driver side door, the warning light did come on but after the accident had already occurred. this was the first failure. brake line was repaired and a year later, the second brake line failed on may 23, 2014. while pulling boat out of boat ramp, i went to stop the truck and the brake pedal went to the floor again , luckily not going fast or down an interstate. again the leak was from under the driver side door, but was the other parallel line going to the abs block. this is a serious safety issue and i was very lucky twice. all brake lines will be replaced with stainless steel lines. i will not buy another gm product unless they make this right. *tr

Went to back out of my driveway, hit the brake pedal and it went to the floor. the curb across the street stopped me. luckily there were no kids riding bikes or playing in the street.... looked under my truck and saw that the brake lines were corroded and one had apparently burst. there was a large puddle of brake fluid where i was parked. i'm just so glad no one got hurt, but its probably just a matter of time before someone does. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 2500 hd. the contact stated that while driving approximately 30 mph, the brake pedal was applied and extended to the floor without any response. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the brake line and hose needed to be replaced. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure and current mileage was 92,000. *tr updated 05/10/13*lj updated 05/21/2013 *js

While performing an oil change i noticed severe brake line corrosion. the truck was immediately taken to my local mechanic for inspection and is now having all brake lines replaced. thankfully the brake lines did not fail while i was driving or towing a trailer. i have a 1989 chevy silverado 2500 that hasn't had corrosion problems like this newer one. after some googling i found out that there is an investigation in to this matter and that many owners have had their brakes fail while driving. the nhtsa needs to step up and hold gm accountable. sure, it will be an expensive recall but if gm does the right thing it will show that they care about the safety of americans and will make many brand-loyal customers happy. this matter is very serious, especially considering what the majority of these hd trucks are used for...hauling, towing, etc. *tr

Brakes failed ,pedal went to floor; main line from master cylinder sprung a leak, noticed all lines near drivers side inner fender rusty , had wife pump brakes; brake fluid sprayed. i replaced main lines to distribution block and one front line. called dealer he said they new of this problem and told me to check rear line going over gas tank. i will replace it soon . any of these trucks still on the road need to be repaired .i've driven this truck since it was new. *tr

Lost sudden brake pressure. have no warning light. found a pool of brake fluid under middle of truck bed this morning. a brake line appears to have ruptured above the gas tank. i have read of numerous complaints with this same issue. thank god i discovered the problem at home and did not continue to drive this morning. *tr

Hard brake line failure. brake line ruptured as brakes were applied. this is the 2nd hard brake line failure i have experienced on this truck. *tr

While approaching the back of another vehicle while it was taking a left hand turn, i applied my brakes and had none, the peddle went to the floor and i could not stop. i down shifted the truck into low gear which is with an automatic transmission and applied the emergency brake. i had the truck towed to a repair shop where i was told the brakes are rotted and line ruptured. i understand there are a lot of problems with the brake lines on these vehicles and something should be done about them. surely they are made of inferior materials because this problem is not happening with other trucks models like ford, dodge, or tundra. truck is now at steve's accurate auto repair, madbury nh. *tr

Brake line ruptured from small spot. caused by corrosion. breaks became soft pedal pushed to floor. line was in the front of truck . all lines are found to be in poor condition related to rust on entire truck. *tr

On august 3, 2012 i was driving my 2002 chevrolet silverado 2500. at some point when i pressed the brake pedal it went to the very bottom and brakes did not work at all. the situation was very serious, since i was driving on the busy highway, state route 287 in nj. fortunately, i was able to slow down the vehicle without an accident. because i use this vehicle for work, i took it to the auto shop and had it fixed as soon as possible. at the shop i found out that the vehicle is completely rusted underneath and all of my brake lines broke because of it. they had to replace 40 feet of brake lines and refill the brake fluid that was lost as a result of the broken lines. i was also informed by the mechanic that not only the brake lines, but fuel lines are rusted too. all of that has to be replaced. moreover, the vehicle?s springs and chassis are rusted too. i was told that the vehicle needs a special protective coating underneath to avoid that it falls apart. at this time i'm talking to gmc company regarding my issue, which does not mean that they will cover my expenses or repair the vehicle on recall basis. i've been told that they will do the investigation, and will contact me soon. i feel responsible to report such an unfortunate situation, so it will be investigated further, in order for others to avoid any accidents or deaths. *tr

Brake lines rotting out under my drivers door on my 2002 silverado ,never saw so much rust in my life and i live in a fairly warm climate, dealer wanting 1500.00 to replace ,there area lot of other owners complaining about this ,,,someone will get killed because of this.... *js

Experienced complete brake failure without any warning lights due to rusted brake lines.the placement of the antilock brake controller three feet behind the drivers side tire at the top of frame and no apparent corrosion protection seems to have caused this to happen. *tr

The truck is primarily used for towing trailers. once in 2012 when towing a 10k lbs travel trailer a rear brake line that appeared solid developed a hole and released any hydraulic pressure. the truck was safely stopped and repaired. august of 2013 while towing pwcs on a trailer another line that appeared to be solid brake line developed a hole and leaked out the break fluid. truck was safely stopped and is awaiting repairs. the truck appears to have an abnormal amount of rust on the brake lines brake components frame and suspension components for the age of truck. front and rear brakes were replaced 3 times due to rust also. body of the truck has no rust or damage to it. *tr

Brake lines and fuel lines completely rotted. *tr

Pushed brakes and the pedal went to the floor. i had to use park brake to stop. the brake lines are rusted with large hole in them. *tr

The original factory brake lines rusted through in various places. the main line to the rear runs concealed from view and rusted, the lines going into the abs module are located in an area that develops corrosion too. my brake pedal felt week and went to the floor as the result of the brake line failure, luckily no one was injured . the brake line failure cost me a weekend trip that i had to use the truck for, at least a $2,000 loss plus the expenditure for the repairs. *tr

Metal brake line corroded through and i lost brake pressure. an accident did not occur, most likely due to the truck being unloaded. the week before the incident, i was hauling large loads of hay. *tr
