We have classified the 3 complaints from 2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 about STRUCTURE into the following categories.
Frame is rusty to the point of being a safety hazard. just about every silverado from 1999 to 2013 i see on the road has a very rusty frame. meanwhile a friend's cousin has a 1969 chevrolet c-10 pickup that has seen many winters and been sitting in a field, and that frame looks 100 times better than my 2004. this is a concern that should be taken seriously. also my brake lines rusted and burst almost causing an accident (another very serious issue that has been left ignored). to whomever is reading this, think about any family members with a silverado and what danger they can face from a company that got away with dark methods and is facing zero punishment.
i was in an accident in my 2004 silverado 1500. i lost control and hit a tree on the front driver side. the insurance company declared the truck a total loss. i kept the truck and repaired all damage. the service sir bag light was on. it was not on before the wreck. it was about the third time cranking the truck before the light came on in the dash. i thought everything was functioning correctly. we had an automotive mechanic check it out with an auto scanner. it showed the box that tells the air bags to deploy had to be replaced because it sent signal for air bags to deploy but they did not. *tr
A truck went tho a red light as i was under the light heading east and the other vehicle was at stop light and for unknown reason it took off hitting the front of my right fender and putting me into a spin. at first i didn't realize what happened. the my van stopped. the police asked if i was ok. i said no.i got hit in the face and right arm by the 2 air bags in front. i was the only person in the van. the air bags were broke open. never had accident before were air bag went off. did not know how they were supposed to look. till i seen on the tv recalls. and they are not supposed to break open.the jell behind my right eye split. i have to see a dr. every 6 months now to check pressure in eye for glaucoma now. *tr
Door latch passenger side failed while driving, causing the door to swing open and passenger to almost fall out. passenger was kept in vehicle by safety belt. no injuries but quite a frightening experience. this is not the first latch failure on this vehicle, the drivers side door also had a latch failure approx. a year earlier. this is caused by the latch springs rusting though and the latch releasing. spoke with other owners they have had the same problem, also spoke with the dealers repair shop, not an uncommon problem with the vehicle. expensive to repair as well, the part is $175 plus labor for each latch. *tr
Frame is extremely rusted & cracked in front of left rear tire. *tr
Was about to pull out onto the highway when the brake pedal went to the floor. with truck in park, checked underneath and noticed puddles of brake fluid on the ground. turned truck around and parked it using the parking brake to slow/stop. after parking the truck, the instrument cluster said to service brakes soon. further investigation revealed the hydraulic brake lines along the frame rail are prematurely deteriorated. all need replacing. *tr
I was exiting a highway traveling 35-40 miles per hour. the road had a slight turn to the right with a small puddle of water in the middle of the turn. when i hit the puddle my truck began to fishtail. i first thought i was hydroplaining but when i tried to do corrective steering nothing was working. the swerving got more and more violent and move the truck through 3 lanes of possible on coming traffic. when i reached the berm on the other side of the road there was a loud bang and my truck canto a sudden stop. i thought that i hit the guardrail and when i looked in my rear view mirror i saw may spare tire which was mounted under the bed of my truck laying on the ground behind me. i exited my truck and saw i never hit the guardrail and the loud bang was when the tire brook free and bent out my rear fender. it soon became evident that the spare tire hanger came loose from part of the bracket that was holding it inplace and was swinging back and forth until the part of the hanger that was bolted on finally broke and released the tire. while swinging back and forth it damaged one of the shocks, bent my tailpipe and knocked it of its hanger and did some damage to the underside of the truck i was very lucky because the light for the on coming traffic was red and all potential harm and property damage was avoided. *tr
Rocker pannels and cab corners gone due to rust. neither dodge or ford of the same era have rusted to the extreme my chevy has. chevy refuses to do anything about this issue they have known about for years.
2004 chevy silverado pickup tailgate cable failure. -- i was injured today while loading my riding lawn mower onto the back of my pickup. the cables (which appear rusted within) snapped allowing the lawn mower and myself to fall off the back of the truck. i narrowly missed being seriously injured. shear luck allowed me to be thrown out of the way. *jb
Dt: 2004 chevrolet 6500 truck. the consumer states there is a design flaw in the step to get into the vehicle. he fell off the truck and broke his hip. the fuel tank on the vehicle is round, and the steps are mounted to the side of the tank. the second step the safety grip does not extend all the way to the edge. the caller does not own this vehicle, the vin is not available. *ak
Moisture came through the vents in the dashboard on the right hand side of the radio, so much that consumer's hands got wet if he touched it. consumer had been hospitalized due to the fungus, or mold that grew from this moisture. took vehicle to the dealer. they cut a hole in the air housing and poured a chemical inside to kill the fungus. however, the problem recurred. *ak
