Tl* the contact owns a 2004 chevrolet silverado 1500. the contact stated that while driving 15 mph, he attempted to engage the brakes but the brake line rupture without any warnings. as a result, the brake pedal stuck to the floorboard and brake fluid was spewing out from underneath the vehicle. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure who did not offer any assistance. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure and current mileage was 87,000.
I had full brake loss at 55 mph coming to a stop light, luckily i was able to move the truck off the road or there would have been fatalities . i took my truck to monroe muffler and brakes and was told that all of my brake lines and my fuel lines are completely corroded and that they are seeing more and more of this in these vehicles. they replaced the brake line that rusted through but told me that all my lines need to be replaced. after doing a little research i have found that there are hundreds of cases just like mine with these same trucks. what is gm waiting for before they recall these trucks, a higher body count? *tr
Brake line failed when stopping at a red light. *tr
Brake line failure - braking ability loss. while stopped at a red light i noticed that the brake pedal was slowly fading and moving toward the floor. i assumed that the brake system was failing in some way and drove very carefully. i stopped and inspected the vehicle and saw that fluid was leaking from a brake line under the master cylinder area, i still had use of the rear brakes, apparently only the front side had leaked. i never lost control of the vehicle fortunately, as i became aware of the problem while stopped. if the failure had occurred while driving at highway speed things could have been very different. my local mechanic replaced the two brake lines that run from the equalizer to the abs unit at a cost of nearly $300.00. all the lines were badly corroded but i can't afford to replace them proactively right now. having read many other similar complaints i believe that gm should do something about this before more damage, serious injury or even death occurs. *tr
Truck: 2004 chevrolet silverado 1500, standard cab, long bed, 133 inch wheelbase, 109,568 miles on odometer. brakes completely failed, pedal to the floor, no front to back split braking available, total failure. brake line ruptured, brake fluid, under pressure, squirted on exhaust, lots of smoke, but no fire. laid down puddle of slippery fluid on roadway. pulled off road without incident. truck is standard shift, used transmission, to down shift and slow down, emergency brake was working, but couldn't stop vehicle on its own. didn't use tow, risked driving vehicle home, luckily only about 5 miles in rural area, in first gear at 5-10 mph. *tr
Brake lines resting on top of chassis in driver's front wheel well corroded and breached/leaked brake fluid. vehicle is in michigan. *tr
As i was driving my truck a small child on a bicycle came into the roadway, as i applied my brakes to slow to a stop the brake pedal went all the way to the floor. i quickly deployed the emergency brake to stop the truck's forward motion, luckily i was only traveling at about 25- 30 mph when this happened, had i been on a road with a higher speed limit i would not have had enough time to stop my vehicle. upon inspection by my mechanic, i have been told that all of my brake lines were rusted out and the vehicle needed to have all the lines replaced. one week before this incident, i went up the mt washington auto road in new hampshire while on vacation with my family and consider myself lucky that we are all alive today. i believe the dot should issue or take immediate action to address this obvious manufacturer's flaw as i have found out this a common problem on many similar gm cars and trucks. the dot should at least notify or have gm notify owners of these vehicles that they are in danger especially if they drive there gm affected vehicles on a mountain road or hilly terrain. my truck is only eight years old with 83,000 miles on it and these brake lines should not have failed so quickly. the dot has a responsibility to protect the consumer and they should take some sort of action to address this issue. *tr
The brake pedal when all the way to the floor. at this point brake fluid was observed on the ground and further inspection revealed severely corroded brake lines. it was luck that were not traveling faster. there is no way brake lines should corrode this fast with this low mileage. stopping to me is the utmost safety concern and these vehicles should be recalled. *tr
i was about to leave for a 4th of july party when i started down my driveway . i went to stop at the end of my driveway when the slow speed abs kicked in .. and then the brake pedal went to the floor .. got out of my truck to find that the brake line had cracked and all of them were rusted .. have not had the money to have them fixed yet ... this sounds like it should be fixed by manufacture. *tr
Premature failure of brake lines due improper manufacture / improper materials and corrosion. brake pedal went to the floor. no braking whatsoever. very dangerous. *tr
Pickup is always garaged . at 30000 miles had to change the front brake sensors as the anti-lock was activating as the truck came to a stop on dry pavement. occurred at approx 5 mph. hubs and sensors changed ($600 cost). now at 58000 miles problem has reappeared. it appears a recall (#05v379000) has been issued for silverado pickups from 1999-2002. i will be contacting dealer. truck located in northern minnesota.
Began to slow for upcoming traffic light when brake pedal went to the floor. the last inch or so of brake travel semi-engaged some braking allowing me to stop (while applying extreme pressure to the brake pedal). at the dealer was informed that one brake line had corroded so bad that it burst, and all other lines should also be replaced as they showed the same rusted, corroded condition. quoted a price of nearly $3000 dollars to replace them all. i've never skimped on maintenance, and since this is a great vehicle (besides this issue), i'm giving the go-ahead for the work. had i been traveling any faster, or there had been more congestion, a serious accident could have occurred. *tr
5-29 12 front brake lines leaking fluid in driveway. severe corrosion on brake lines .local dealer replaced brake front lines. 5-22-13 driving the down road ,complete loss of brakes ,emergency stop!! rear brake line on frame rail had burst due to corrosion. local dealer replaced "rotted" brake lines with new corrosion resistant lines. all repairs done at dealer on file. *tr
I tried to stop the truck and the pedal went to the floor. my mechanic said that the brake line rusted and he needed to replace the entire system. *tr
Coming down route 55 in lagrangeville ny, stepped on brakes, to turn into stewarts shop, they went to the floor, lucily no cars in front of me was able to use emergency brake to slow down. my home was approx 3miles away. used lowgear, and put it into 4 wheel drive low to get it home. had i ttowed to monroe muffler shop. steel brake lines rusted out, had front brake lines replaced. june 6, 2014 brake line over rear axle failed and lost brakes again.also due to rusted lines. *tr
My daughter and i left a restaurant and went about 200 feet to a busy intersection and i went to stop and my brake pedal went all the way to the floor no warning or anything just no brakes at all we could of both been killed a jeep was turning and i tried my best to avoid hitting him but i had no were to go and after the wreck i noticed brake fluid pouring out under the driverside door the brakes had just been changed a few months earlier and the mec never noticed rusty brake lines because it had been painted over when my dad bought the truck but by looking at them they looked ok but there is 4 lines running 2gether and you can't see the back 2 but when i had them replaced with stainless steel lines i can't understand how gm would use such poor quality of lines on something as important as brake lines there are thousands otherfamilies lives at risk right now how many people have to get hurt or even get killed before they do anything im lucky my daughter and i wasn't killed i have got a 49 kaiser and the lines on it are still in perfect shape but i cant believe how rotten all the lines were on my truck and we don't even get much snow in tn why have they got away with this how many people and their families have to unknowingly risk there life every day before some one does anything about it is gm paying people off or what this should not be allowed to go on the kedshould atleast send the owners of these cars to atleast get them checked out so people don't put there lives of risk. *tr
After a close relative lost his brakes on his 2003 gmc sierra i examined the brake lines on my 6 year old chevy silverado with 65000 miles and discovered the brakes were severely rusted all along the frame near the drivers side door. i had to have all the lines replaced at local garage at my own expense as the chevrolet garage acted like it was perfectly normal for a 6 year old truck to be in this condition. i took pictures of corroded lines and have kept the repair receipt in hopes that general motors will do the right thing as toyota did when customers complained about the tacomas with severe rust problems around 2008-2009. *tr
All brake and transmission lines were severely rusted and leaking in my 2004 silverado. all lines had to be replaced due to the severe corrosion. *tr
My daughter and 10 year old grand daughter borrowed the truck to go to a store,a short distance. she came to a red traffic light and with no warning the brake peddle went to the floor. traffic was moving across the intersection in the 35 mph zone on a green light. my daughter made the correct panic decision to quickly turn right into the traffic flow shoulder to avoid being hit broad side. i had driven the truck within the hour before the near accident with no indication of a problem.no leaking brake fluid smell, no dash lights, no low brake peddle. all brake fluid drained from the failed brake line under the cab, so much for the duel braking system!! all brake lines were replaced. *tr
When coming to a stop, the abs system fails. i researched and i found a recall up to 2003 model for the same exact problem. i do not think it was corrected in the 2004 model. disconnected the fuse to stop the problem but it now is an issue because i'm trying to sell the vehicle and the abs light on all the time. they want $900 to replace the abs module. *tr
2004 chevrolet silverado 1500. complete brake failure, to the floor, on the interstate highway. i had to go off the road to avoid hitting other vehicles. gm says the dual system prevents this ? not true. my mechanic informs that brake line corrosion and failure on gm trucks is a known and very common problem, due to inferior metal used in the brake lines. gm is denying responsibility for the most critical safety item on their trucks ! what is nhtsa doing ???? *tr
