Recently reported ELECTRICAL SYSTEM problems on 2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

My cluster og gauges speedometer, oil, temp, mileage stop working all the time, i was stopped once because my gauges stopped working and got an unlawful speedometer ticket. there is a serious problem with this 04 chevy silverado 1500. *tr

Problem 1.the plug that controls the blower motor in my 2004 chevrolet silverado melted and started smoking. i replaced it and 3 months later it is now happening again. without the use of the blower motor i can not use the heat,ac or window defogger. this truck has less than 50,000 miles on it. when i search online i see that many others have the same problem. their plugs have melted and in some cases have also started fires. not having a window defogger is very dangerous. problem 2. the heater blend door actuator has stopped working. what this did before the plug melted was to control the temp of the air coming out of the vents. when it stops working like it did to me was to blow burning hot air right in my face even with the ac on. imagine driving at 55 mph and have these things happen to you. please make general motors recall their products and fix them so this problem will not occur again. thank you. *tr

A few months ago 2 of the seat belts on the middle row seats of my vehicle became stuck so they are unable to be pulled out long enough to reach to be clipped in. around 2010 several of the gauge needles on the instrument panel of my 2004 chevy tahoe started to stop working. from 2010 till 2015 i tried to take to a dealership 2 times to get it look at but by the time i took it into the dealership it would start working again so i was advise to bring it in when it was not working. a couple months ago when having the same issue i decided to take it to a local shop where i have paid $300 to try to get it fix, however the electrician found a report in regards to my car's problem and advise me to take my vehicle to a dealership to seek repairs at no cost. i then took it to ron tonkin chevrolet on 8/10/2015 located at 122nd ave and was told that no recalls were found for this issue just a notice and advised me to contact gm to seek cost assistance. on 8/11/2015 i called gm at (800)630-2438 and talked to a rep, then a senior advisor and was told that my request was denied and so i requested to talk to someone above the senior advisor. i was told that i will get a call in the next 24-48 hrs but since i didn't get a call i called them back on 8/17/2014 and was told by a supervisor that my request is denied because the smart care coverage ended in 2011 and i should had follow the instructions on the notice sent to vehicle owner before 2011 to get my instrument panel gauges and seat belts repair. i explained them that i did not received that notice but they claimed that it was sent to me and for that reason nothing else they can do. i consider that this should be a safety matter and that gm should be responsible to cover the cost for the repairs.

2004 chevrolet silverado 1500 5.3 motor z71 package. dual climate control goes to full heat, dealer said this is a common problem. fixed once under warranty. found blogs online to trouble shoot exact problem and fix myself. some people reported fires. even when ac off it still blows hot air. turning the vehicle off and then restarting it has been working. i do alot of highway driving and cant always pull off and restart the motor. being that heat still blows when this happens and wont stop, putting the windows down does nothing to aid this problem. *tr

The truck's instrument panel failed. with the exception of the speedometer, all the gauges failed to show accurate readings. the issue began as a sporadic condition. the panel would work some days and then not work on others. in addition, we experienced the situation where the entire panel, including all dash lighting and digital displays have gone out for days at a time. as of december 2013, the main gauges are completely inoperable. we only have the working speedometer, no other gauges. we purchased this truck new and kept it well maintained. this problem should not occur under normal conditions. please research and advise. *tr

February 20, 2010 i smelled a burning electrical smell. after a quick look under the dash on the passenger side i found smoldering wires from the wiring harness that is attached to the heater fan. the wires run from the heater fan motor to the resistor. the resistor is also damaged. the wires had to be replaced as well as the resistor. the parts dealer said that this part frequently must be replaced on this model truck and they keep at least 30 in stock just for this reason. this vehicle only has 63,575 miles on it. as a result, i was unable to use my heater or defroster which resulted in being very cold on my drive home from work at 6am and i could not defrost my windshield to see properly. *tr

2004 chevrolet silverado extended cab, poor braking. replaced brakes and rotors and still have poor braking. have to bear down on pedal to stop. speedometer reading goes up and down on it's own. had a speed sensor replaced but didn't correct the problem had the dealership replace steering coupling in steering column because of clunking in the steering. the clunking, loose feeling has started again. *tr

The speedometer on my 2004 silverado z71 extended cab either doesn't work or shows incorrect speeds. gm has issued a recall on this up to 70,000 miles and while i have 106,000 miles currently, the problem started at 67,000 miles. i was over 100,000 miles when the recall letter arrived by mail. i did not previously fix the problem for the same reason i still haven't, lack of funds. if this is a known problem and safety issue due to faulty equipment gm should be required to remove the mileage requirement. i should not have to pay for a known faulty part simply because my work entails extensive driving. *tr

I have a 2004 chevy silverado 1500 ss, the driver's power seats, driver and passenger heated seats, and mirror dimmer's lose all power. they were working 30% of the time. i took it into the the dealership, they said the wire harness melted and would cost $500.00 to fix, they can't determine why it melted. they left the harness unplugged because it left in, it would cause further damage to the airbags. my drives side aribag will not inflate if needed until replaired. i called gm - chevrolet to make a complaint saying this is a safet issue and nothing due to human error. they said it is out of warranty and is not a safety issue or a defect, they are also not sure of why it melted, it could be many reasons: something touched it, wear and tear, a gm part gone bad. they claim this is not a gm issue. they said because of all this and the age of the car, they will not compensate for any of it, but then said regardless of the age of the car, the wire is not supposed to melt. *tr

The speedometer is very erratic. it won't reset to 0, but stops elsewhere, often at 100k so it looks like i'm often traveling about 200k. the ammeter does the same thing, and sometimes the tach doesn't work at all. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2004 chevrolet silverado 1500. while driving 65 mph the speedometer registered the speed at 120 mph. whenever he reduced the speed, the speedometer reset itself to 55 mph. the failure will be diagnosed by the dealer. the failure and the current mileages were 53,000. updated 01/05/10 *bf updated 01/07/10.*jb

2004 chevy silverado speedometer recently just started jumpin up and down, i have no idea what speed i am driving. my gas gadge is not working correctly either. both these defects occur twice a week and sometimes will start working then go back to the defect. my heat comes on warm only while i'm driving. *cn

Instrument panel cluster is going out. all gauges are stop working, one by one. *tr

Gauges are failing on 2004 silverado, was outlined by mfgr as a defect but they will not replace it and estimate the cost of part to be in excess of $300. *tr

I own a 2004 chevy silverado.it had only 59,000 miles at the time of the defect. the defect is the speedometer on the truck. i was returning from an out of state trip when i noticed i was passing everyone on the interstate. my wife told me to slow down but i told her i was doing the speed limit. at least i thought i was about ten minutes later i looked down at the speedometer and it said i was going 30 miles per hour and i must have been doing 65-75. i slow down to what looked like a safe speed because i did not want to get a ticket or cause an accident. later we stopped for gas and when i returned on the highway i had no reading at all. i had 800 more mile to go and could not tell how fast i was driving on the interstate. as we made our way back home over the next two days the speedometer read anywhere from 70,40,25 or nothing while on the interstate.i contacted the chevy dealer only to be told they was nothing can could do since the warranty expire. i looked for a recall but could not find anything.what i did find was over 40 complaints on the website called auto beef where owners of 2004 silverado was having the same unfixed issue. updated 01/25/10 *bf as of today i have not fixed the problem due to financial problems due to the holiday and lack of fund thereafter{like everyone else!}i feel this is a safety issue and i feel that chevorlet should issue a recall on this problem since there are so many with this serious issue with such low mileage on their vehicles.they are probably more out there that just paid to have theirs fixed after being told by the dealers that they could not help them with this default. please look into for the safety of our drivers. thanks for your time on this concern. *tr updated 01/25/10 *bf updated 01/26/10.*jb

I have a 2004 chevy silverado and a 2004 trailblazer both of them had the speedometer go out after 80,000 miles. *tr updated 12/15/09

Without warning of any sort my 2004 z71's speedometer has quit working. it stays below the 0 mph mark and if it decides to come alive while i'm driving it is completely off. i can be driving 20 and it will say i'm going 50 mph. this is my primary vehicle....i have 3 little girls and this is our main source of transportation. why won't gm recall this? i'm also hearing the clunking sound that so many other people have reported it is accompanied by a wobbling sensation in the steering column. i can't afford to keep having these issues serviced just for them to stop working again. recall or lemon law. *tr

Speedometer does not work correctly. the speedometer floats as you are driving and also shows mph when at a complete stop. sometimes the speedometer sticks at 120 mph. this is happening every time the vehicle is driven. this is a major safety issue since the driver does not know how the correct speed that is being driven. *tr

Speedometer started working erratically giving incorrect speeds. sometimes stuck at zero and other times stuck at different speed. many other people are complaining of same problems. please make chevy recall and fix no matter what mileage is on vehicle. *tr

Steering column is faulty in two of my 2004 chevrolet silverados. had it repaired by gm but it keeps messing up and causing vibrations, clunking and altering the steering . also both of my trucks the speedometer has completely quit working at 40,000 miles. how safe is this????? please please do a recall on these two items. *tr

When coming to a stop, the abs system fails. i researched and i found a recall up to 2003 model for the same exact problem. i do not think it was corrected in the 2004 model. disconnected the fuse to stop the problem but it now is an issue because i'm trying to sell the vehicle and the abs light on all the time. they want $900 to replace the abs module. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2004 chevrolet silverado 1500. while driving at any speed, the speedometer would always indicate that the speed was 55 mph faster than what the vehicle was actually traveling. the vehicle has not been diagnosed by the dealer. the current and failure mileages were 83,000. updated 08/04/09 *bf updated 05/08/09.*jb

Initally, the speedometer gradually started displaying incorrect speeds without alerting me to a failure in the system. there were no significant enough changes in behavior at around 95,000 - 100,000 miles on the odometer to cause me to notice the problem. it wasn't until one day while i was going much faster than the slower lane traffic on the highway that i noticed a serious deviation in the reading ( i finally figured it out while starting to drive much faster than regular traffic flow while the speedometer kept gradually dropping any time i slowed even slightly until it registered around 40 mph when i was passing middle-lane trafiic in a 65 mph zone). i stick pretty close to the speed limits and observe recommended speeds (e.g. yellow signs on curved highway) especially while towing trailers. had this happened to someone else while pulling a trailer around the mountains of colorado and wyoming, there could've been a serious injury/death level accident. i didn't see a recall on the instrument cluster or speedometer using this sites database search. *tr

'04 chevrolet k1500 - throttle body sensor the issue is that the truck keeps coming in and out of "reduced power mode" which when it is in this mode it is very hard to maintain speed which in turn is inherently dangerous. in '07 i had the connections cleaned and repaired (under warranty), on july 7th of '08 i had the whole throttle body sensor replaced (out of warranty), and it started acting up again on june 25th of this year. i qualified for the 12 month repair warranty, but had driven over 12,000 miles. out of the blue my truck goes into reduced power mode. i pull over and basically restart the truck a few times and apparently the computer resets and exits the mode. this worked for the first week but now it has to sit overnight. the check engine light will stay on for a day or so, but then will clear. i have taken it to three dealerships for diagnostics and no one can put their finger on the specific problem. the most current one has told me he could replace the throttle body sensor, but can't guarantee that will fix it. he has three more '04 chevys coming in and out of the shop with the same problem. what they have been able to tell me is shown below, but still haven't been able to fix it. "scan revealed 2 p2135- throttle position sensors 1-2 correlation. " using your site i have found the following service bulletin: 060604026 (nhtsa item number : 10020835). i don't mind spending the money for the repair, i just need to know what i need fixed. i'm worried about pulling onto the highway and then loosing power and causing a wreck. *tr

2004 chevrolet silverado speedometer not working. when stopped it reads 70mph and up!!!!!!! *tr

The speedometer on my 2004 chevrolet silverado ls no longer works. regardless of my speed, the needle remains at 0 mph or drops lower (below the line). my truck has approx 56,000 miles on it. *tr

The driver's side ac randomly starts blowing hot air while we are driving along in our 2004 silverado which started about 2 years ago at about 80k miles. in order to get the ac back, we have to pull over and turnoff the engine and then start it back up. some days it never does it, sometimes several times and usually on the freeway but sometimes on city streets too. this is in addition to the speedometer, and other instrument panel issues that have had to be repaired over the last 2-3 years (after the warranty expired). *tr

My speedometer is going crazy. it's stuck at 70mph pegs out over 120mph. *tr

Instrument cluster failed, system has tried to restart while driving and gauges stick at various indications. mileage doesn't update. time issue recall nhtsa. *tr

The speedometer on my 2004 chevrolet silverado stopped working. it is impossible to accurately tell the speed of travel. the correction is to have the speedometer replaced for a charge in excess of $400. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2004 chevrolet silverado 1500. the contact noticed that the air bag warning light was illuminated on the instrument panel, which indicated that the air bags were inoperative. the failure could prevent the air bags from deploying in the event of a crash. the dealer could not determine the cause of the failure or provide a remedy. the failure and current mileages were 80,000. updated 05/14/09. *lj the consumer stated the fuses blew which disabled the airbag and seat belt lights on the dashboard. updated 05/14/09.*jb

Tl*the contact owns a 2004 chevrolet silverado 1500. while driving 35 mph, the contact noticed that the speedometer was displaying inaccurate readings. the vehicle was taken to the dealer and they discovered that the internal cluster was faulty. the vehicle was repaired at the cost of $529.79. the manufacturer stated that no compensation would be provided because there were no recalls available. the failure mileage was 111,582 and current mileage was 111,600.

Instrument cluster failure on 2004 chevy silverado speedometer and odometer stopped while driving dealer said it was common on these trucks and repair cost is $600 because at 38k miles my warranty has expired on this . only the power train is still under the 7yr 70k warranty. *tr

2004 chevy truck battery went dead, changed battery. the air conditioner started blowing hot air out of the drivers side and cold air out of the passangers side . gm wants $100.00 just to test and see whats wrong! ! ! ! checked the internet, found over 100 items with same problem. gm will not recall. why? *tr

Driving down the highway speedometer indicated 57 in a 70 mph zone so i accelerated to get up to speed.climbed ever so slowly to 70 when i realized tach at approx.3000 rpm and very quickly gaining on traffic ahead of me. got off accelerator and speedometer went down to 30. stayed there for a minute or two then dropped to zero. hasnt worked since. *tr

The speedometer on my vehicle has gone haywire. i'll be driving 60mph and it shows that i am going 110mph. very distracting and unsafe. *tr

Speedometer some times does not register correctly. *tr

The gas gauge became very inaccurate and then stopped working altogether. then the alternator gauge stopped being accurate. works sometime and others it indicates max amps. checked with a meter and the charge, with motor running is 14.2. my brother had a 2003 when the same happen, cost him 400.00 to have instrument package replaced. this should have been a recall to replace defective instrument package. *tr

I have a 2004 chevy silverado and the speedometer keeps failing on it one day it quits at 40 or 60 then somedays it quits at 120 or don't register at all now it seems to have quit all together i have not seen it work in a couple weeks , after seeing all the complaints about this same problem i believe that gm should recall these problems. *tr

Speedometer and other gauges in my 2004 silverado have failed and no longer work. told the fix is 600 dollars??? *tr

I own a 2004 chevy silverado 1500 4x4. the speedometer started malfunctioning around 90000 miles. it would work but not read correctly. it got worse and worse. now very very rarely does it work properly. most of the time it reads incorrectly sometimes it doesn't move at all. sometimes it is all the way at max and sometimes it stays on 0 and sometimes it is stuck somewhere in between. the truck now has about 135000 miles on it and everything i find says it will cost between 300 and 500 dollars to get it fixed. i have researched and found that it is probably because of faulty instrument clusters that gm knows about and wont recall. i don't think it is right that i have to pay for their faulty parts. it is very unsafe not being able to know how fast you are going. *tr

Our speedometer would go as far as it would go and get stuck while driving normal speeds. we were told that if it had happened before we had 70,000 miles on it that it would have been repaired at no charge but because we had nearly 75,000 miles on our truck--we paid nearly $700. *tr

The blower motor resistor in numerous general motors vehicles has been known to short out and potentially cause fires. this has been made more visible by a recall in canada by transport canada (transport canada recall # 2011074). i have had to replace the blower motor resistor in my vehicle and the replacement is already starting to malfunction. if this is recalled in canada it should be recalled in the u.s. *tr

2004 chevy silverado 1500 4x4 crewcab has a defected instrument cluster which causes the speedometer to stick or stop working. there was a recall on this issue but gm refused to honor which i was never notified of. *tr

Speedometer not working. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2004 chevrolet silverado 1500. while decelerating from approximately 55 mph, the speedometer continued to display that the vehicle was traveling at 55 mph. the contact shut off the engine and when restarting, the speedometer read that the contact was driving at 35mph while the vehicle remained idle. after the contact shut off and restarted the vehicle several times, the speedometer returned to normal operation. approximately eighteen months later while driving at 5 mph, the entire instrument panel failed. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer for repairs or diagnostic testing. the failure mileage was 62,000 and the current mileage was 120,000.

I have a 2004 chevy silverado z71. at 40,000 mi, the speedometer started to lag and move in "fits and starts" (very jumpy). it finally stopped working and now only reads 60 mph regardless of actual speed. all other instruments work fine. only the speedometer exhibits this behavior. *tr

My speedometer on my 2004 chevy silverado started sticking at 30mph this past weekend and is now stuck on 15mph and does not move. i have 72k miles on it. it has occurred to me from my research that this has been a problem with gm products. *tr

My 2004 chevy silverado speedometer started reading wildly. with ignition off it might read 60mph, or 10mph. while driving it was wildly erratic and even maxed out at 120mpg while driving approx 45mph. i had 81,600 miles on the vehicle. thus happened suddenly one day without warning while driving down the road. i almost had an accident at the sight of seeing my speedometer tell me i was doing 100mph when i was just driving slowly. it was a shocking experience. *tr
