At about 40,000 miles my abs motor under the drivers seat came on and would not turn off. contacted dealer, they said this was a common problem and the part needed to fix it cost $900. after investigating the problem i found there were thousands of 99 chevy 1500 owners with the exact problem.

Parked my 1999 chevrolet k pickup at a store and just before i turned the engine off, the abs light came on. when the ignition was off, there was a grinding noise from under the vehicle. apparently the abs module was still running. i crawled under the vehicle and unplugged it. when i took it to my gm mechanic, he told me that the ebcm shorted out and apparently happens frequently to this model. it cost me $781 for the part plus labor of $202.50. i was unimpressed, especially to find out that there has been so much problem with this and that there is no recall for it. can you help? isn't this a safety issue? my vehicle only has 50496 miles on it.*ak

Problems with abs system on 1999 chevrolet k1500.*mr before the consumer turned off the engine the abs light illuminated on the dash. when the ignition was off the consumer heard a grinding noise which originated under the vehicle. the consumer crawled under the vehicle and unplugged the abs and the noise stopped. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was determined that the ebcm shorted out. the consumer was told that this is a common problem with this model chevrolet. *nm

On the approx. date listed i had a problem with my abs. system running non stop. when i approached a local dealer about this issue, i was told it would be a few thousand dollars to fix or i could just pull the fuse and ignore the lights that would be on so this is what i did. i was recently notified that this problem could now be fixed for much less ($1500). *nm

March,2004 shut off truck and heard sound (like a small electric motor running) coming from under truck. unplugged electrical connection to avoid running battery down. called my mechanic and he knew right away what was wrong, he said he has seen quite a few of the 1999 pickups with the same condition. as a friend he looked at it no charge. said it would be around $650.00 to fix. called chevy dealer and they told me gm would pay half. i laughed and said that's not good enough. they also wanted $79.00 diagnostic fee. what a joke. i wrote a letter to gm they did not respond. i called on the phone and got all the way to the secretary of the chevrolet division and she would not put me through to him. i'm now driving with standard brakes but my child drive my truck from time to time and feel like i'm not providing him with a safe vehicle and i dont have the money to fix it. *nm

Dt*: the contact stated after parking the vehicle, a noise like a small electric motor running was heard. the underside of the vehicle was inspected by the contact. the plug to the abs antilock brake pump was disconnected. a service dealer was contacted and offered to diagnose and replace the pump at half the cost. the manufacturer was notified and made the same offer. updated 10/25/2006

At speeds under 7 miles per hour when the brakes are applied the anti-lock system engages and will not allow the brakes to work (no brakes whats so ever and the truck keeps rolling without any stopping effects at all). *ak

[1] brakeing seemed to be erratic so i went to a dealer to have it checked out.upon inspection it was found that the rear brakeing system was rusted to the point of a critical condition.[2]life threatening. [3]dealer replaced rotors, disks&pads on both rear wheels.

Consumer applied the brakes and the brake pedal went to the floor. took vehicle to the dealer for analysis. the mechanic could not resolve the problem. *ak

Dt: the contact is having a problem with the abs. it is engaging at low speeds at 5 mph. this has been a continuing problem for the past two years. he pulled the abs fuse to get the abs deactivated. the vehicle is running correctly now that the fuse has been removed. he contacted gm, and was informed that there were no recalls on this vehicle. also, he states that the straps on the tailgate are not holding correctly. *ak

Abs motor control unit failure, after seeing many complaints on the web i am reporting it here. abs warning light came on and pump motor started running. even when turning off the motor, the unit still runs. abs failure. had to pull fuse to stop, now driving without abs and abs and brake warning lights are on. $1000 - $1500 to repair problem, will most likely drive without abs for a long time. *la

While driving at an undetermined speed emergency brake light illuminated. consumer contacted dealership on four separate occasions, but the problem still occurs. *ak

After turning off my truck i heard the abs pump running after removing the key. i called the dealer and was informed that it was a common problem with the abs module. *jb

Abs system went out on my 1999 chevrolet silverado at 60,000 miles. dealership says they are seeing hundreds of these. *nlm

Abs computer failed in my 1999 chevrolet k1500 silverado pickup. the module makes a continuous noise like a small engine running even with the key removed from the ignition. the only way to stop the noise is to disconnect the battery or remove the abs 60 amp fuse. dealer informs me the part costs $875.00 in checking with used parts shops i found this part is in very high demand -- much greater than they can supply. one used parts dealer told me they had 18 requests this year alone. the chevrolet dealer hesitatingly admitted they replace lots of these. with the fuse removed the vehicle is drivable but without the abs function. the dash board does have indicators constantly lit for brakes and abs. *jb

The abs module failed, which caused the vehicle to experience extended stopping distance.*jb

Constant noise from under drivers side ,had gm dealer diagnose problem ($75),was told electronic brake control module had internal short. ext. warranty would not cover the $900.00 expense, contacted gm customer assistance who said they could not help with problem, showed no concern over the safety of having the abs system working, dealer tech. advised to pull fuse. am know without abs brakes. feel gm should take care of this safety issue. *nm

Contact states: the brakes failed and the consumer ran into a vehicle. the rotors rusted so badly that brakes were not being applied. when he contacted gm. they told him to take it to the dealer, and the dealer replaced the hub assembly. they wouldn't pay for the brakes or the damage done to his truck. just the hub assembly.*ak the ignition system was replaced. *jb

Abs light come on. abs motor began to buzz and would not stop when the engine was shut off. i had to take the fuse out that was for the abs brakes. the brake light and abs light stay on the dash. i recently had valid break issues and i was not able to tell due to the staying on continually. *nlm

1999 chevy silverado pickup abs brake problem ebcm module went out on truck at 33,600 miles. this module continues to run after shutting off your truck. drains battery. skids from dry to wet pavment. had to replace on saturday emergency pull over. cost 914.85 i have the module that was taken off truck for verification.

Anti-lock brake module failed, resulting in loss of anti-skid brake control.*ak

My 1999 chevrolet 1500 z71 has had numerous abs failures. a few very close calls. the dealer or mechanic haven't heard of a recall. i understand that the abs module is telling the system that one wheel is slowing down as if a skid erroneously which activates the abs taking the driver out of the equation. sombodys going to die. please forward any info to the e-mail address i listed . thank you. *ak

While driving 30mph brakes operated poorly, resulting in extended stopping distance, also brake pads wore out at 4000 miles.*ak

The abs pump wont shut off when i turn off my truck, causing a dead battery. the pump went bad 3 weeks after the warranty expired. dealer told me it would be around $1000 to fix or i could pull the fuse. every person ive talked to with a 99 silverado has had the exact same problem.

The abs sensor failure caused the front caliper and the rotor to fail which was replaced. *yh

Abs pump went out, luckly i had an extended warranty and only had to pay $100.00 instead of $800.00. also many other trucks in the area with same problem. had klunking noise in rear end carried to two different dealer ships and could not find anything. sounded like transmission was playing catch up with rearend. three months after warranty goes out it does the same thing and bust the gears in transmission. motor sounds like it is knocking when you first crank it up. the dealerships around are quick to sell you a car but will not stand behind you when there are problems. this will probally be my last chevy!!! *jb

Tl*the contact owns a 1999 chevrolet silverado 1500. when decelerating to 5 mph or lower, the antilock brake pedal extends completely to the floor and increases the stopping distance. the contact referenced recall # 05v379000 (service brakes, hydraulic:antilock), which applies to his vin. he stated that the recall repair was performed in 2002, during which the failure occurred while driving in reverse. the current failure occurs when the vehicle is in drive. the current mileage is 100,090 and failure mileage was 97,000. updated 02-01-08 *bf updated 02/01/08 *tr

While driving abs went out, and consumer could only use the regular brakes.*aka concern arose when consumer was informed that there have been numerous problems with the abs with these vehicles. consumer feels a recall should be issued. *jg

After turning vehicle off, abs motor continued to run. contacted dealer who took fuse out. consumer now does not have abs on vehicle.*ak consumer feels the part failed too soon. consumer was informed that the abs motor won't shut off unless the fuse is pulled or the battery runs down. there is a chance of fire and the brakes are inoperable when failure occurs. *jg

Abs pump continually runs, even after engine is shut off. dealer determined part needed to be replaced.*ak

The abs modual on my 1999 k1500 chevyrolet truck has gone bad. the pump stays on at all times, unless you pull out the fuse for the abs. by disconnecting the fuse, the abs brakes are disabled for the truck. this also leaves the abs light and brake light in the dash on. the replacement for this part is around $1000. this appears to be a fairly common problem on this model truck.my father is haveing the same luck with his 1999 k2500. note that the dealer recommended fix, short of replacing the unit, is pulling out the fuse. *ak

Consumer stated that when the computer that controls the abs goes out, the abs pump continues running, to disable it consumer has to either disconnect the pump or the battery, if this is not done consumer stated it may result in a fire.*jb

Abs warning light came on and "abs pump" would not shut off with iginition key removed. $975 for. *ak

The abs pump started running when i started the truck the only way to get it to stop is to pull the fuse. the power window on driverside will go down a little then stop, you have to keep pushing on the button to get it all the way down which takes a lot of time, same way when you go to put it back up. the throttle sticks when you go to accelerate, did it a little new now does it a lot. i have contacted gm they said that the truck is to old know for them to do anything about it. i have heard that other owners have had the same problems but theres occured while under warranty

Consumer started vehicle and heard noise over top, engine was running. consumer cut engine off, and this other motor was still running. abs light came on, and consumer started smelling an odor. abs motor continued to run without engine running, and key in ignition. contacted dealer, and dealer stated abs motor was burned out.*ak

While slowing for stop sigh brakes suddenly went to the floor. no brake failure light came on, nor was there any other warning. left rear emergency brake cable had been rubbing on hydralic line and wore a hole in hydrolic line causing fluid to escape and brakes to fail. there was a recall on front brake hose.

Brakes failed at low speed. *tr

Consumer was traveling 60mph on highway and heard a noise. abs braking light came on dashboard. he turned off vehicle, and motor located under driver seat outside of vehicle, controled abs braking system. there was no abs since braking system was detached. *ak

Condition of pads unknown at purchase. pads replaced after 3,357 miles. pads replaced again after 1,900 miles. rotors also had to be replaced after pads wore out and dug 1/8" into rotors, which also had to be replaced. *ak

Consumer was hit from left side by another vehicle. for consumer to avoid crash she swayed and ran into a ditch. upon impact, air bags did not deploy. consumer was driving at about 70 mph. *ak brakes did not respond properly. *yh

While driving at 70 to 80 mph applied the brakes, and they didn't work, causing the consumer to rear end another vehicle. *ak

When brakes are applied they pull to the left most of the time. *ak *mjs

While driving down the road heard grinding noise when stopping or braking hard. consumer's foot was thrown off when applying the brakes. contacted dealer. they replaced the brakes, and resurfaced rotors' base according to a technical service bulletin. but, consumer is still having the same problem. *ak *ml
