Problems with 2001 Chevrolet S-10 STRUCTURE

Tl* the contact owns a 2001 chevrolet s10. while driving approximately 5 mph, the spare tire carrier detached from the vehicle. the contact was a certified mechanic and repaired the spare tire hoist on several occasions. the vehicle was repaired, but the failure persisted. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 96,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2001 chevrolet s-10. the contact stated that the front driver side door would not latch closed. upon examining the vehicle. the contact noticed that the latch on the exterior was cracked. the latch on the passenger door was also experiencing the same failure. the vehicle was not taken to have the failure diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and offered no assistance. the failure mileage was 163,502.

I drive a 2001 chevrolet s-10, that for the most of its life has been in snowy or salty atmospheres. so there is a good amount of rust under the vehicle. a while ago i was driving down the interstate, i hit a bump and heard a pop, and looked in my rearview mirror and there was my spare tire bouncing in the lane i was driving in. cars swerved around it, i pulled over on the shoulder and got the tire and parts and examined the damage and cause. i have noticed that the only thing holding up that spare tire under my truck was a little cable. well, just like the spare wheel, the rust got a hold of the cable and the cable rusted through and gave way. i am a professional mechanic, and i could think about how many vehicles there are out there that all that is holding this wheel under the vehicle is a little cable, no "system redundancy" sort of speak. just like mine did, if the cable breaks, there is no safety device to catch it. some vehicles are better at securing it than others. my case was a lucky one, its obvious that a tire and wheel bouncing on the interstate could easily cause a wreck or even kill someone. needless to say my heart dropped when i saw the spare wheel in my rear view mirror. it seems to me there should be better way to secure the tire. right now my spare tire is just sitting in the bed until i have some time to figure something out, get a new cable system and design a 'system redundancy' like a bar or chain holding it up with the cable, to support it. *tr

Tailgate cable broke. it appears to be rusted although undetectable through plastic covering. how can i trust the integrity of the cable to know when to replace it? *tr

1) tail gate cable broke on my '01 s-10 pick up have not replaced the part yet,the other side is supporting by itself currently 2) at 80000 miles in jan. of this year the motor had to be replaced at a cost of $1000. it was a used motor. it was knocking, missing and running rough. pieces of bearing were in the engine oil. *jb

The straps that hold the tail gate in position broke that hold the tailgate in a level position. one broke first and i called gm to see if there was a recall on my truck and was informed no they were thinking about extending it. my son was almost hurt when this happened. *jb

1. no special events leading to failure 2. both tailgate cables rusted, broke in half while lowering gate, minor bruising to driver and scratches on tailgate finish. 3. cables apparently cannot be replaced, attachment to tailgate latch assembly seems to be permanent. *nm

Pickup truck tailgate support cable failure. 1/4 inch cable supports tailgate when lowered. cable collects water under the vinyl coating and rusts through, resulting in tailgate to fall. rust is not detectable under plastic coating. cable rust through is at the center portion, the lowest part when the gate is up. *nm

When my son went to open the rear tailgate of my 2001 s-10 crewcab, both tailgate cables broke at the same time. we were fortunate that he wasn't on the tailgate as he could have easily been injured and damage could have occurred to the tailgate. i didn't realize this might be a problem until after mine broke and i started to do a little research on the internet. it appears this is happening to a lot of s-10 pickup owners. i am currently in the process of getting parts to replace the cables. *nm

We were loading a couch onto the bed of the truck when both tailgate cables broke causing my tailgate to rest on the rear bumper. caused a slight crease / mark on the tailgate. both cables appear to be rusted and broke in the same location. *jb

Dt*: the contact stated there was nhtsa recall campaign 04v129000 regarding the tailgate cable. this vehicle has the same problems as indicated in the recall, but it is not included in the recall due to the model of the vehicle. *ak updated 1/25/2006. the consumer contacted the manufacturer who claimed that the tailgate cable in his vehicle was not the same as the ones that were recalled. *nm

2001 chevy s-10 pickup truck: the right side tail gate cable just snapped after i lowered the tail gate. no heavy loads were on the gate at the time. i looked at the cable and it had rusted inside the plastic covering. it looks like the plastic cover holds water inside and causes the corrosion. i called a chevy dealer and was told they would not replace it, but i found a recall on other chevy trucks with the same problem. *nm

The support cables on my 2001 chevy s10 broke unexpectedly while i was sitting on the tailgate. both cables were corroded at the same point where they bend. as a result of the breakage, the tailgate hit the bumper and was dented in two places. these were the first dents ever for my truck.

Both tailgate support cables on my 2001 s10 pickup that has a blazer vin # have broken in half due to rust and corrosion. i went to my dealer and that said that the recall only applies to fullsize pu/u's and other tailgate vehicles. my vehicle is not listed. i am seeing that the blazer s10 has a recall on these items. why wouldn't mine? can you help me get these repolaced?*ak

The tailgate straps on my chevrolet s-10 gave way while i was kneeling on the back of the truck, my knees were hurt for several weeks. gm knows that their tailgate straps are defective yet they do not warn that they may just give out like they do. *ak

I have 2 gm trucks in my family. both have had the same problem with all the door hinges - the hinge pins lock up and the doors will not open or close without deforming the body. i have been told (when i went in for repair at a dealership) that this is a standard repair for all gm trucks. the risk to the passenger is that the sheetmetal weakens and the hinge rips from the body of the truck.*ak

Hauling my 1935 chevrolet engine block and unloading it from my 2001 s-10 pickup. the tailgate cables on both side separated dropping the gate to the rear bmper and in the process tipped the engine block into my lap bruising both of my legs badly. my chevrolet dealer wouldnot replace them without full charge for labor & parts in spite of the same (or similar) cables on the big trucks. i have not replaced them as of yet as i still think they should have been recalled.*ak

Stepped unto the tailgate of my chevrolet s-10 which immediately dropped because the tailgate support cables both gaveway. this occurrence caused a fall which resulted in a back injury. i have since that time replaced the straps, while retaining the defective parts. *nm

The tailgate cables snapped when i was standing on it, after i unloaded some trash bags. i also work at a auto parts store and have had numerous owners of 2001 chevy trucks say their cables also broke. with just the lowering of their tailgate. *cb

Third door latch lever failed. door can not be opened. this is a severe safety hazard as any passengers in the rear of the extended cab could not get out in an emergency situation. dt
