Problems with 2000 Chevrolet S-10 STRUCTURE

Tl* the contact owns a 2000 chevrolet s10. upon inspecting the vehicle, it was noticed that the front frame was cracked and deteriorated to the point that it may fracture. the contact stated that cracks developed on the frame and the motor mount was not welded to the frame properly. the cracking progressed to the point that the frame was also deteriorating on the front driver and passenger sides. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer who diagnosed that the frame should have been welded all the way around the vehicle and it was only welded at the top. the dealer diagnosed that the front framing needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was not available.

Cable straps that hold the tailgate horizontal to the ground when the tailgate is in the down position have rusted through and will no longer hold the tailgate in the horizontal position. there was a recall on this in approximately june of 2006. i received a card in the mail, took the vehicle in to the chevrolet dealer, and they advised me that parts were not available. this happened twice. i kind of gave up, until i discovered the part failure earlier this year. unfortunately i have misplaced my card that they sent in the mail. upon failure of this part, i took my vehicle in to a chevrolet dealer in september of 2014. they knew about the recall, so ran my vin # and said my vehicle vin# was not part of the recall. perhaps general motors didn't recall enough of the vin#s to find all of the part failures. *tr

Engine failure - had to be rebuilt at app. 75000 miles - both sides of cab bottom rear rusted out - first time brake failure 2013 - put brake on to put the truck in drive no brakes front right - aug 2014 brake failure - put brake on to put in drive no brakes. *tr

In a slow moving surface street accident, the frame of the 2000 s10 collapsed toward the driver, and the dashboard broke the driver's femur. *tr

Gm special policy 06020 tailgate support cable replacement. i own a vehicle in the years covered under this recall. go chevrolet in denver colorado refused to fix this as they stated i did not qualify. in short another dealership was willing and is going to fix the issue for free under the recall. my complaint is that go chevrolet management and service technicians are not trained or not willing to schedule the appointment to fix a defective part as they are worried they would have to pay for it. i have also filed a complaint with the dealership. sincerely, pat *tr

Noticed noise from under vehicle during turning and going over bumps found crack in frame rail on both the drivers and passengers side of the vehicle where the independent front suspension is mounted to the frame frame had to be welded and a strap put in place to eliminate further cracking. *nm

Dt*: the contact stated the steel tailgate support cables corroded and fractured without warning. the vehicle was not seen by a dealer. there is a nhtsa recall, # 04v129000, regarding the tailgate hinge and attachments. the vin was not included in the recall.

While unloading pieces of a cast iron tub, as i slid the tub onto the tail gate of my 2000 s10, one of the tail gate cables failed. the tail gate moved slightly but the other cable was able to take up the rest of the weight. the cable appeared to be very rusty inside. this appears to be similar to an issue remedied on the larger trucks but not dealt with on the smaller size trucks. (the day listed below is an estimate.) *jb

The tailgate supports (cables going from the truck bed to the tailgate) got pinched between the bed and tailgate causing them to corrode and eventually break when weight is put on them. one of these cables broke while an 80 pound boy was sitting on the tail gate. the cables have not been replaced and are available.*jb

2000 s-10 pickup truck. both tail gate cables broke at the same time. dealer said the sell at least on pair a month. to replace the strap, you must replace the latch also. they are sold as right and left hand parts. cost was $105.00 for the pair. time to replace was approx. one and a half hours.

Both of my 2000 chevy s-10 pick-up tailgate cables have corroded and snapped.

2000 chevrolet s-10 pickup both tailgate cables failed simultaneously dropping the load and potentilly injuring a person, who fortunately landed well and seemed unharmed. both cables had rusted through, appeared to be pooly galvanized and exposed to moisture even inside the rubber coating.

Dt: caller said tailgate cable broke without warning. caller said a recall was issued on the bigger trucks but not on this one. dealer said caller will have to pay for repairs. manufacturer told caller to keep receipts. caller felt manufacturer should tell public of problems so they can be more informed.*ak

My tailgate supports both snapped at the same time my son was crawling out of the back of the truck and tumbled to the ground. also shortly after i purchased the truck in 2001 both sides of my seats the recliner knobs both broke. i also have tried several attempts to turn my air bags off on the passenger side and they won't go off. *jb

T: the contact stated both tail gate cables snapped while unloading items from the vehicle. there has been a recall for a full size truck, but not for the s-10 pickup truck. consumer did not have the recall number. the service dealer did not state why the cables snapped. but the vehicle was not under the recall and was no longer under the warranty. consumer replaced both cables and the bolt. the bolts kept coming out because consumer did not replace the components correctly. *ak

1. i was unloading my aluminum canoe from my chevrolet s10 pick up truck, and tailgate cables broke, lots of rust and corrosion on the cables, causing the tailgate to suddenly drop 6 to 10 inches on the back bumper, causing me to lose balance. i fell off the tailgate and fell onto the canoe , bumping my head and hurting my chest and shoulder. i went to gmc dealership in rochester, indiana 46975, and was told they had no recall on these items, and i could order them for replacement. *ak

Tailgate was down, and was pulling container of dirt out of bed of truck. when the weight of the container snapped the tailgate cables on both sides of our 2000 chevrolet s10, caused damage to the tailgate and spilling container. *ak

My daughter was letting my tailgate down on my 2000 chevy s-10 pickup when both support cables snapped. the tailgate pinched her fingers between the tailgate and the bumper, it could have been much worse. she bruised her fingers, no permanent injury.*ak i have yet to replace the support cables, we lower the tailgate carefully.

I own a 2000 s-10 pickup i had the tailgate open and i sat on it and the tailgate straps broke and i feel to the ground i already have back problems and when i fell i hurt my back and had to have treatment done on my back by my chiropractor. my husband called the chevy company and told them that the straps broke and asked if there was a recall on them they said yes but not on the s-10 only on the sierras and silverados. they would do nothing to solve this problem. so i went into the recall site and it said they had 42 complaints on the s-10 and sonomas on the 2000 year i don't understand why nothing is being done to fix these if they have had this many complaints i have talked to 2 other people that have this same problem they said they just never took the time to file a complaint. so how many others are there out there like this ? i feel very strongly that they should be responsable for fixing this. thank you beverly ustaszewski. *ak

Tailgate straps on my 2000 chevrolet s10 both broke. this vehicle has only 38,000 miles on it and has never had anything heavy placed on it. i tried to get parts to replace the straps, but was told they can't be found.*ak

The tailgate straps broke when i sat on the open tailgate almost causing me to fall to the ground. luckily i was able to catch myself. if i had placed any weight on the tailgate, that would have fallen on my legs and caused injury,

While standing on the tailgate of my s-10 pickup, the left supporting cable broke. the cable on the other side held so there was no injury or damage. my inspection of the breakage revealed the multistranded steel cable had become heavily rusted and thereby weakened. the cable is covered by plastic tubing which can be easily abraded by repeated opening and closing of the tailgate. moreover the cable is obviously made from unprotected metal ie. zinc-dichromate at best, rather than ganvanized or stainless. (zinc-dichromate sacrifices itself to moisture over a short period of time). i went the area dealer who, after checking to see it was on the recall list, quoted over $100.00 to replace both the left and right cables. i learned some larger truck models already had recalls for this problem. i called gm and after a day was told they would split the costs with me which i told them was unacceptable as i considered the problem to of a saftey related nature stemming from poor design which essentially made the product unfit for it's intended use. it remains unrepaired at this time. *ak

The driver was rolling the motorcycle off of the truck bed and without warning the cables collapsed. the driver placed the cables inside of the truck and drove it to the dealer for inspection. the mechanic informed the consumer that this vehicle was not on a recall. the consumer has to rendered payment for parts and labor. *jb

2000 chevy s-10 pickup truck (approx 35k miles) tailgate cables have snapped at midpoint, approximately where they are forced to bend while the tailgate is in closed position. fortunately, there was no load on the tailgate at the time but the in-use failure puts the tailgate at risk to fall off the truck while in motion potentially endangering a vehicle following me. i see from an earlier nhtsa recall, other website discussions and by the shear lack of replacement parts available, that this component failure is not an isolated incident.*ak

While opening the tailgate, the cables broke. *jb both tailgate cables broke at the same time. when the cables were manufactured. there was a hole at the top of the cables that allow water to drain into the center of the cable, trapping the water and rusting out the cable. *sc

Broken tailgate support cables rusted through recall on other models besides the s-10

Driver side door hangs when opened, as a result of the 2 bottom pins that hold the hinge. *ak the consumer states that the door is designed poorly. consumer has retrofitted with e-clips that does a much safer job. also, the door latch mechanism falls apart. *scc

When attempting to back the truck up, the backs of the seats are too high and it obstructs my view. one night while trying to back my truck up in my yard, my view was too obstructed and i hit a tree. the tailgate of my truck was down, and was damaged. it is un-repairable. i was backing up at about 5 mph, so the airbags didn't open. this has been a problem from the beginning. i haven't contacted the manufacturer, but if you advise me to do so, i will. the anti-lock brakes just went made a grinding noise and i had to almost push them to the floor to stop...i was going 35-40 mph and someone in front of me slammed on their brakes. since then, the brakes scrub and make a grinding noise if i don't stop gradually. the brake pads were looked at and are okay. i'm not a mechanic, but if it's not the pads, then what is it??? noone was injured in either incident, but i'd like to know if there have been any other complaints about the seats. i'm almost 6 feet tall and can't see over them, and barely see around them. that's dangerous!...as is the braking system.*ak
