I just found out last night that my 2006 chevy malibu ltz brake lights illuminate without pressing the brake pedal and when i do press the pedal it goes out. this would cause anyone following my vehicle not to see that i am braking and could cause a crash. also my cruise control and my cigarette lighter went out. i am not sure if they are all connected somehow but the brakes are definitely a concern. i will say that my car does have a salvaged title but i don't know if that would cause the safety issue. i have owned the car for 4 months and they have worked until now. i have an appointment to get it fixed and am not driving it till than. *tr

I purchased a 2006 used chevy-malibu on feb. 22-2008. with 3600 mileage. after driving for 2 weeks the steering wheel would lock-up along with a bell going off and a light flashing steering wheel problems (the light stayed on for a short period of time). i tried to steer with the car operating in manual steering which was very hard to do since i'm 72 years old. i let the car drift to a parking lot and proceeded to cut the motor off and start again to try to get power steering in an operative mode. this happened to me a number of times . coming out of my driveway there is a fire hydrant and the wheel locked and i could not turn away from the hydrant in time and i hit it. i was turning a corner in to traffic and it locked again. i called the dealership and they said to take it to someone that required that i leave it overnight . but the shop was quite a distance from my home. i waited until july and called the salesman who works at a different place now and he said i could take to any chevrolet dealer to have it repaired. i have an extended warranty with zurich . the repair shop states that they don't cover all the cost to get it repaired less $200.00 out of pocket. i want to know if there has been some other complaints or if there is a recall on this type vehicle. *tr

I have a 2006 chevy malibu. at about 38,000 miles the electric steering quit working. i had to replace. since the installation of new electric steering component, the steering system makes a very loud snap or clunking or metal on metal sound everytime i make a turn or take off from a stop. some thing is shifting or moving in the steering gear shaft or rack & pinion. called the dealer and they said it was normal that it does it and some grease would help quite it. that was there answer for poor engineering. there are many people that have the same problem and there doesn't seem to be a permanent fix for it from gm. if i try to sell my malibu to someone else i will either take a large loss or not be able to sell it at all. i am complaining because gm has not stepped up and accepted responsibility for this problem and come up with a solution. to have anything done at a dealer is 60 to $80.00 per hour, which all the unfortunate owners of those gm electric steering vehicles should not have to pay. i would like to see some pressure put on gm to resolve this very exasperating and potentially serious erosive safety condition. as time goes on the situation gets worse and resonates more and more up the steering column. lets get this fixed before there is a serious accident or loss of life because the steering fails on these automobiles. sincerely. *tr
