Recently reported FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE problems on 2005 Chevrolet Malibu

On 11/21, i took my 2005 malibu to the gm dealership for a recall on the "steering" to replace the torque sensor assembly. nhtsa campaign number: 14v153000. when i left the dealership and driving for awhile, i noticed my car would partially stall at traffic lights or stop signs. i called the dealership when i got home and they told me to bring it back the next day, but i had to work. today, 11/26 i took my car to the gm dealership because the car continues to partially stall at traffic lights or stop signs. i informed one of the reps what was happening and that i had no signs of this issue before the recall replacement. i was told they never went under the hood of my car during the recall replacement. it was all done at the steering column; that this issue is something that just happens without any warning at all. he informed me that other folks have come in with the same issue...not sure if this was after they also had the recall done. i tried telling the service dept., i had no other issues before bringing my car to them for the recall, but instead was told this was not their fault and i would have to pay for whatever is wrong with the car. i didn't let them touch it again. i will take it to my mechanic, who i never had an issue with after working on my car. i noticed there was a recall in 2011 for component(s): fuel system, gasoline; nhtsa campaign number: 11e009000 and never received this recall. i bought this car from car max in 2011. just speculating if this may be my problem. i also never received the recall for nhtsa campaign number: 14v224000 component(s): power train. more work to do to find the answers. *tr

I have had my engine stall due to lack of fuel multiple times which seems dangerous, i travel on the expressway every day. what if it happens at an fast speed. i also have had multiple issues while steering my car. there is an loud popping, coming from a steering shaft, which has just gotten worse i am afraid the steering shaft is going to break! both of these issues have been an recall for 2005 malibu. as i am clearly having these issues my car is not part of the recall? why not? if something happens and i end up in an accident i see a lawsuit. not to mention i have a 4 month child! *tr

We have received 3 separate recall notices from gm. (1 for electric steering, 1 for brake apply sensor and 1 for a shift cable fracture). however, gm will not fix any of the problems. they tell us to call the dealer. the dealer then tells us that gm will not supply the parts. upon calling gm a third time, they will not reveal who is making these parts, where they are coming from, or have any idea when they will be available. they again instruct us to call the dealer. each recall states that it is an "important safety recall" in accordance federal laws but yet nobody will fix any of the issues. the first recall notice came in 2012 for electric steering. we are still being told there are not parts to fix this. the brake apply sensor came in july 2014. the shift cable fracture also came in july 2014. (this indicates that the cable can snap while driving). *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet malibu. the contact state while driving approximately 35 mph, the check engine light illuminated. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for diagnosis where the mechanic stated that the fuel pump vapor line was cracked and leaking fumes. the mechanic was also unsure as to how the fuel line became fractured. the mechanic also advised the contact that if he did not get the vehicle repaired and the leak continued, the vehicle would possibly explode. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the problem. the approximate failure mileage was 86,000.

Fyi (the incident date is when i had my car fixed at a work shop) i replaced my fuel pump, left axle and transmission.(total $2484.92) i have a recall for my fuel pump (nhtsa campaign number: 11e009000 ) but gm won't replace it due to it not being built in a certain location. my electrical system has a recall (nhtsa campaign number: 14v252000 ) my key ignition has a recall although the chevrolet dealer has not received parts to replace this defect. my transmission also has a defect ( the transmission has a click on 2nd and 3rd gears and gm is not fixing these problems and continue to make these defected transmissions) my transmission repair shop replace these clicks and charged me $1750.00 and gave me a warranty. my electrical has a defect, i keep changing my fuses because of my electrical system( nhtsa campaign number: 14v252000 ). gm is neglecting to fix my car. i will never purchase another chevrolet again. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet malibu. while driving approximately 25 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic for diagnostic testing. the diagnosis was that the fuel pump needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred. the vehicle was taken to the dealer, but was not diagnosed or repaired. the contact was made aware of nhtsa campaign number: 11e009000 (fuel system, gasoline); however, the vin was not included. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 100,000. updated 7/16/15*cn

The car stops when driving also the exterior light have burned out the casing that holds the bulbs are melted. *tr

Vehicles brake lights stick on while driving. sometimes they flash when going aprox 65 and up. it appears the brake lights also flash when car is changing gears. the car once would not shift into drive while reversing and lost all power steering. also the brakes or something at front of car shakes rapidly when accelerating and even worse when going down hills. *tr

My gas gauge is not reporting the correct amount of fuel in my gas tank. the engine light is illuminated 24/7 due to this issue. i believe it has something to do with the fuel sensor. *tr

The car died on the highway when it goes over 55 the fuel cuts out. the car dies and will not restart. *tr

I consider us lucky. we were in a wal-mart parking lot 25 miles from home, and the car wouldn't start. i played with the ignition off and on for half an hour, and a connection was made, and the car started. i was careful to keep it running, and made it home. the next day, the same problem. the electrical connection to the fuel pump was missing. i had it towed to my repair shop, and they replaced the ignition switch. cost $620.54. on 2/7/2013 the fuel pump was replaced. i feel that the incidents are connected. i think the loss of electrical feed to the fuel pump harmed the pump, and caused it to fail. cost of fuel pump replacement was $635.11.this adds up to $1255.65 repair bills which should have been unnecessary. i feel there are more cars out there that gm should be made to recall and repair with better parts. i was lucky! others were not, and we don't need more unnecessary deaths on our highways. *tr

I am not sure of the exact part, but was driving down the road and car went from a fuel tank of gas to showing none. which i know wasn't the case as i had just stopped and filled up. is this a common problem i have noticed a lot of recalls with fuel pumps and ignition switches which i also have had issues with. i can go to turn my key but need to really push hard on my gas to get it going. the car has shutoff on my while driving once but i was able to steer it off to the side of the road. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet malibu. the contact noticed a gasoline fuel smell emitting from the tail pipe. the vehicle was taken to a local mechanic for diagnosis. the mechanic replaced the fuel filter and performed a fuel cleaning but the failure continued. the contact referenced nhtsa campaign id number: 11e009000 (fuel system, gasoline) but was advised by the manufacturer that the vin was not included in the recall. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 115,000. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet malibu. the stated that the fuel gauge stopped working and caused him to run out of fuel and stall. the contact took the vehicle to the dealer where it was stated that the failure of the fuel gauge was a wide spread issue. the contact did not know what was being repaired. the failure mileage was unknown, but the current mileage was 57,303. updated 11/01/12*lj the fuel level sensor was replaced. updated 11/02/12

Vehicle has failed to start after driving and then parking. first time had vehicle towed to s repair shop. they replaced fuel pump and installed a new fuel filter. vehicle still did not start. i researched the problem on the web. i found several complaints . i found that the problem was the vehicle anti- theft device. it malfunctions and shuts the fuel injectors down. i found a fix on the web, you have to turn the key on for 10 to 15 minutes until the vehicle theft light quits blinking turn key to the off position remove the key wait 1 to 2 minutes and then start vehicle it works. this is a temporary fix it will happen again. it has happened to me two more times. i called the local chevrolet dealership and inquired to see if they had heard or have seen this problem i was told that the problem has been around since 2002 and there has not been a re-call for the problem. i called chevrolet and informed them of the problem. their response was that they were not aware of the problem. according to the dealership gm has been aware of the problem for years. and they have not done a thing to correct the problem. according it will cost $500.00 to replace the defective parts. this in my opinion is totally unacceptable. this is a potential safety hazard putting people in danger. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated that the power steering failed, fuel would not pump properly into the vehicle, the fuel gauge displayed improper readings, and the speedometer was inoperative. the local mechanic repaired the fuel system. neither the dealer, nor the manufacturer were notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 140,000 and the current mileage was unavailable.

Shift level does respond when shifting into low (l). dealer said shift lever cable is bad and is a common problem. second item had to replace fuel sensor in gas tank as it failed also was sending an over voltage signal to gas gauge. also a common problem. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated that the fuel gauge failed and would not provide an accurate reading when full or empty. the vehicle was taken to a local mechanic who replaces the fuel level sensor. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 61,760.

The fuel gauge is erratic after i fill the tank, the gauge goes directly to empty after driving about 2 miles. it would correct itself when there was about a half tank of gas left. it did this for about 5 months, now it either says the car is empty or full. now after filling my car i have to set the odometer to keep track of my miles i have driven in the car. *tr

My 2005 chevy malibu is experiencing an issue with the fuel gauge in regards to every time i fill up on gas. after the nozzle clicks once letting me know that it is full, i take the nozzle out. when i start the car, the gas needle goes up to full and stays there for about 3 miles or so. then it suddenly goes to empty and i get the low fuel message, the steady check engine light and the chime. after driving 30 more miles, the needle fixes it self and goes to the correct level of gas. it works fine for the rest of the time until i fill up again. the low fuel message goes away and the light on the dash board goes away too. this is very similar to a recent message my father-in-law received from gm concerning his 2005 chevy envoy. he received a letter regarding a special coverage for failing fuel gauge sensors. the description in the letter is very similar to my same problem. *tt

Fuel level sensor failed causing the fuel gauge to be erratic..also car will not pass inspection because of the check engine light being on..i see other gm cars of different models have had recalls on this particular part. the repair will cost me $600 for the car to pass inspection. *tr

The fuel gauge suddenly started to jump up and down and vehicle engine gets off and on. *tr

Tl*the contact 2005 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated that his fuel gauge indicated that there was no fuel or low fuel when the tank was actually full. the manufacturer referred the contact to the dealer; however, due to the cost, the contact repaired the vehicle himself. the failure mileage was 65,000 and the current mileage was 75,000. the consumer stated the fuel gauge read empty all the time. the consumer's son installed a used fuel pump and wiring harness. however, the problem continued. updated 11/18/11

2005 chevy malibu. gas gauge started giving incorrect readings resulting in car running out of gas and stalling, unable to restart. gauge now will always read completely full when starting car, then after a few minutes, will fail and drop all the way to completely empty. i have spoken to many other gm owners and several of them have experienced the same issue, costing them almost $1,000 in repairs to get the gauge/float replaced. this is a serious and potentially a very dangerous problem because people could run out of gas and be stranded miles from help and this could happen in adverse or freezing weather conditions. if children happen to be in the car, the seriousness of this is considerably higher. i feel this is a major and widespread defect and that this particular piece of equipment should be recalled and fixed at no cost to the customer. i have owned gm cars my entire life and i would think that they would correct this and keep their dedicated customers safe and satisfied. *tr

Purchased 2005 chevrolet malibu in may, 2009. ongoing problems with brake and turn signal lights not working. attempted replacement and repair by mechanic. lights remained inoperable as did fuel gauge by 80,000 miles. while parked, car ignited from under center console, door locks engaged, and interior burned. total loss of auto and contents. *tr

2005 chevrolet malibu ls with 3.5 v6 engine. fuel gauge reads empty and check engine light comes on after every refill of fuel tank. problem has been continual since 7/12/ 2010. *tr

I have a 2005 chevy malibu, bought brand new, i've had problems from the start with this car. the rack & pinion has been replaced twice. the hub bearings have had to be replaced, the rear stabilizer bar needs replacing. i have a gas cap issue, now to top it all off, i've been having issues where i am driving and i start to accelerate and the steering wheel locks up, i have been on the freeway several times when this happens. this is a very dangerous situation, gm will do nothing about this. they know that the 2005 malibu is a dangerous car but will not recall at all. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet malibu. the contacts was driving approximately 35 mph when a warning alarm sounded in the vehicle. the fuel level gauge was providing a reading of empty and began fluctuating erratically. the vehicle was recently refueled to full capacity. in addition, the check engine warning light was illuminated. the contact continued to drive at a slower speed until the components resumed normal operation. the contact stated that the failure recurred sporadically whenever the vehicle was refueled. the dealer was contacted and informed the contact there were no recalls for the failure and the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 65,000.

Fuel pump failure in 2011. defected fuel pump. *tr

Tank fuel level gauge does not show accurate amount of fuel in tank. *tr

I own a 05 pre-owned chevy malibu that was in prestine condition when buying. after having for about 6 months the fuel gauge started acting erratically and the check engine light stays on as a cause of this issue. i was told it will cost me $800 to fix the issue. also the air conditioning unit has gone out due to a faulty part (told by a mechanic). i googled this issue and so many other purchasers of the same vehicle are having the same issues with the air conditioning and the fuel gauge. this is not right and gm has to know that these parts are faulty. i am a working mother of 3 who cannot afford to have this fixed and because of this i cannot renew by tags on my car due to the check engine light being on. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated that the engine light illuminates when the fuel is low in her vehicle. the fuel gauge only indicates when the vehicle is full or empty. the vehicle was taken to a chevrolet dealer and they stated that the fuel sensor was defective and the fuel line needed to be replaced. the repair would cost $1,300. the vin was unknown. the current mileage was 50,000 and failure mileage was 25,000.

Dt*: the contact stated there is a knock in the steering when turning the steering wheel. this started two weeks after purchase. the dealership determined a new intermittent steering shaft was malfunctioning. updated 3/9/2006 - the check engine illuminated and the technician found a leak at the sender hose to the canister and purge valve leaking. *nm

Vehicle intermittently wants to steer on its own. this happens for only a short time when it occurs. primarily it wants to go left. once i tried to go into the left lane of a freeway quite gradually...it wanted to go left alright...although it wanted to go quickly into the lane! car has been to the dealer 5 times for this problem. the dealer has never been able to duplicate the problem. they have replaced the steering column twice. the last time was this past friday (7/30/05). hasn't happened since then (tuesday, 8/2/05)...but...again this is a very intermittent problem. my mileage has dropped from 33 miles per gallon to 29 miles per gallon. dealer says that nothing they have done should have caused this problem. they say that the 29 miles per gallon is within specifications...this drop is very significant. have requested a buy back direct from chevrolet. the vehicle well exceeds the requirements for a buy back according the ohio lemon law. chevrolet says that they will not buy back the car...even though it exceeds the requirements for the ohio lemon law! my biggest concern is that the steering will go totally out and the car will go wherever it decides to...i don't want to be injured and don't want to injur any one else. *jb

Install jumper harness per pip3098a neck, fuel tank filler replace tie rod end and/or adjuster sleeve right replace panel, seat back of back passenger r&r or replace receiver, radio remove, repair and replace radio. *nm

The smell of fuel prompted the consumer to make contact with the manufacture and the dealer since there was a fuel tank recall. the consumer located a crack on the fuel tank. *ak
