I have to turn my steering wheel back and forth and my shifting gear in order to start the car then when going down the highway computer goes off steering becomes harder. a light comes on showing a car and a lock. a message comes on the computer "steering". it does randomly. is there a recall on this? *tr

I was driving and turning a corner when the key turned off and everything locked up. doors locked, the steering was hard to turn i had to pull it really hard to the left to miss the cliff. almost took me off the cliff but i was able to stop it on the side of the road. i tried to get out but the doors locked on me. when i tried to turn it back on it locked up the doors again and wouldn't turn on. but i realized that it was still in gear and i was able to start it after i put it in park. but when i drive it, it seems like its running out of gas or about to turn off while i am driving. *tr

I received 2 notices about 2 recalls on my car that could cause a crash without warning or control. i did experience one of the conditions were i could not put the gear in park or drive when i was trying to start the car to drive. also once the key was stuck in he ignition fortunately these occurrences were during me trying to start the car when it had been parked. this problem was stated in the notice as a condition in which the transmission shift cable may fracture at any time.currently there are no parts available to fix these recalls. i am afraid for my safety as well as my family . *tr

My daughter-in-law was driving the vehicle to work, lost control of the car, went off the road and hit a tree. her brakes would not engage and she lost power in the steering forcing her to go off the road and hit a tree. there have been several recalls on the vehicle but it is not drivable, i still have the vehicle at my house. *tr

Here is what i submitted to gm about my vehicle that can possibly cause me harm or death by driving this vehicle and cannot get assistance due to me being over the 150k mileage mark. see below i have a 2005 chevy malibu and my power steering is going out. i experienced something last week and then again today. my car started dinging and my screen where the radio is showed "power steering" and my steering wheel locked up. i put the car in park and turned it off and then again back on and the steering wheel unlocked. i did my research online and showed this is a problem for this model document id # 10183a and i was told it is only covered up to 150k miles and i am now at 159k and no chevy dealer will help me with this. i believe chevy should stand by there product and fix this for at no charge. this problem didn't occur at 150k miles it occurred now! nature of concern model: chevy malibu year: 2005 thank you, [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

I started my chevy malibu and began to drive down the road with in minutes my power steering jerked, made a ding, ding noise and went out. i pulled it off the road. turned it off and waited when i turned it back on it worked fine. the chevy dealership says that it has to do it when they have it before they replace it. so if it doesn't i guess they want me to get killed before they will replace it. *tr

2005 chevrolet malibu. consumer writes in regards to power steering motor failure. *smd the consumer stated while driving, the power steering motor failed, and he lost the ability to steer the vehicle. the vehicle was towed to a repair shop, where the steering motor was replaced at a cost of $ 693.00.

While attempting to pass another vehicle by accelerating on a slight curve and pulling an incline, the 2005 chevy malibu would not properly steer. when realizing that the steering was not working correctly, decreased acceleration and then was able to regain control of the steering. this has occurred on multiple occasions and nearly caused an accident each time. gm has been notified about the safety concern and they have set up an appointment with a local gm dealer to diagnosis the problem. they have indicated a possible problem with the electric steering in the 2005 chevy malibu based on the vin. i may be charged diagnostic fees and repair costs if the steering issue is not in line with their "special letter" regarding possible failure of the electric steering components. i have read that this is a common problem among this year, make and model of vehicle. i have also read that canada has recently issued a recall on this same year, make and model of vehicle for steering related safety concerns. i feel that this recall for the steering components should also apply to cars in the us if they are experiencing similar safety concerns.

Was traveling app. 35 mi per hr and went to make a turn and lost the power steering and was almost hit by another car. i have lost the ability to steer properly several times over the last year the worst being when this happens and i am on the interstate. this recall happened in may of 2014 and now it is july and the dealer is saying they still don't have the parts to fix the problem. are they waiting till our cars are to old for them to be fixed under the recall? i have not received any notice from general motors. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet malibu. the contact's vehicle was serviced under nhtsa campaign number: 14v153000 (steering), nhtsa campaign number: 14v224000 (power train), and nhtsa campaign number: 14v252000 (electrical system, electronic stability control, exterior lighting, service brakes, hydraulic, vehicle speed control). shortly after the repair, the vehicle stalled without warning, the power steering failed, a clunking noise was heard in the front end, and the vehicle independently veered to the left. the vehicle was taken to the dealer. the dealer stated that the recall repair could not be performed again. in addition, the dealer stated that the steering column and suspension would need to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. in previous years, the contact had to replace the gear box and rack and pinion nut on two separate occasions at a dealer. the contact informed the manufacturer of all the failures. the failure mileage was 50,000.

While passing on the interstate the power steering failed for several seconds. there was an audible alert then the steering failed. several other times while turning at low speeds and accelerating the steering fails for only a brief time, but pulls extremely hard in the opposite direction that i am turning. *tr

Going through a drive through food place and steering completely stopped working. the power steering stops working intermediately. *tr

I bought a use chevy 2005 malibu and the front rail for the frame of the drivers seat broke. after looking around i found it is a very common issue and feel it's a major safety issue! i was told by the old owner that it broke a year after buying the car and the dealer wanted way to much to replace it? if it's a matter of safety should they not fix it for free? should their not be a recall on it? again after looking around on the web and asking around to many dealer shops it is a very known issue that chevy has not ever addressed. i just know that not only is it very hard to sit in, it also feels like it's going to come up off the floor every time i hit the brakes. i'm sure if i even got into the smallest fender bender it would eject me. please do something to make gm repair this issue! also lets maybe address the issue with the failing power steering that has already caused injury's thanks *tr

My wife and i have contacted chevy dealer a long time ago about safety recalls on this vehicle a long time ago and have not received any info. on when these recalls can be done. most of these recalls state that the parts have not been sent. what can your company do about getting these resolved. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated that while driving approximately 40 mph, the power steering system failed, causing the vehicle to become difficult to maneuver. also, the contact stated that the power steering warning light illuminated. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer for a diagnosis. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 95,000 and the current mileage was 123,000. the vin was not available. *tr

I was driving my vehicle down i-680 in northern ca's bay area. while i was on the freeway in the slow lane and my power steering warning popped up on my car stereo display and a split second later i lost the ability to steer my car. i slowed the vehicle as fast as i could without slamming on the brakes. all of the cars behind me slammed on the brakes and i thought i was going to cause a pile-up. a nice man behind got out of his truck and helped me force the steering wheel to the right so i could pull the car off of the road. i then called my brother and he came and towed the car home. there has never been a warning to this issue. it never acted up and i have never been instructed to do a safety check on the power steering. *tr

My power steering has gone completely out. i have made several complaints to gm regarding this matter. gm has acknowledged the problem and has sent out letters advising customers with vins 5f10001-5f250216 (technical bulletin #07126) of special coverage. gm has also sent me a letter advising me they will fix the problem if my vehicle is 10yr or 160k. my problem didn't exist at that time. i now have 212k miles. i took my vehicle to the dealer ([xxx]) and was denied coverage. estimated cost was $900 for repairs. gm knew years ago that they had a problem with the power steering, and it was a matter of time before the steering was to stop working. regardless of the miles. the steering was going out at some point.that is my argument. i just want my power steering fixed. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated that after starting the vehicle, the power steering warning light illuminated. the manufacturer was notified and advised the vehicle be taken to a dealer for diagnosis. the vehicle was taken to a dealer for diagnosis and the contact was advised that the power steering pump would need to be replaced. the vehicle had not been repaired. the failure and current mileage was 166,000.

While making a right turn the power steering failed.....i almost drove head on into oncoming traffic. *tr

Steering was clunking and making other noises that made me question my safety. took to dealer and had the repair done under extended 10 year/150,000 mile warranty with $49.50 as my deductible. car is now making same noises 18 months later. awaiting my chevy dealer to get steering pump in stock so as to get repairs done and apply for reimbursement for initial repair due to recall. *tr

Today we driving through a parking lot and trued to turn and heard a popping noise, and then lack of steering. the steering wheel turned but the wheels did not. had to call a tow truck at a cost of $88.00 and took it to my local chevy dealer. the diagnosed the problem as the steering intermediate shaft bolt broke and also the airbag sensor. the total cost of this repair is: $88.00 for the tow truck, $1500.00 for the repair and 2 1/2 days without the car. we have had this popping noise for a while and no one could figure out what it was. some dealers said we needed to replace the complete rack and pinion steering system, others said it just needed greased. we chose to grease it and the noise went away for a while.so far i have replaced the power steering motor, which gm reimbursed me for about 1 year after i had it repaired. it seems like there are many complaints about this problem. it has been a good car except for these constant problems. something needs to be done so gm will fix these issues. *tr

It seems that i have a recall problem with my steering, i think it has to deal with the torque because it always wants to steer to the right and i have to keep pulling the wheel to the left. if the car is on a lift with no pressure on the tires, as soon as the car is started, the wheels turn hard right which is very dangerous on icy and wet roads. this is an on going problem every day at any speed. *tr

2005 chevy malibu. consumer writes in regards to steering failure in vehicle. *smd

My power steering went out. i was pulling up to the light at the intersection of gum springs road and lee jackson highway in aldie, va, and "power steering" came across my radio and my power steering went out. *tr

While driving 25 ? 45 and making a left turn or changing lanes to the left the steering wheel loses it power steering. this vehicle cannot be steered unless you are a power lifter at that point. this is my mom?s only vehicle and she is 77 and had carpal tunnel surgery on both her wrists, so i doubt she will be able to steer at all. so if gm says it?s not a safety issue, and the car can still be steered, they are wrong. there has been ?special coverage adjustments? for this issue on the 2006 models in united states and gm has actual recalls for 67,000 vehicles in canada for the same thing. (manufacture recall number 12221) her vehicle vin number doesn't fit into the selected vin numbers and she has the exact same issue. someone needs to have gm open up this special coverage for this issue period, regardless of the year. people with same problem on vin numbers that get the coverage get a free steering column install and she has to pay $600 - $800 for same services? all this because of a small part that is riveted to the steering column on the inside that goes out every 30k miles. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated that there was an intermittent failure with the connection of the fuse box and the connecting screws. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer who replaced the screws and the fuse box. the contact also experienced a failure with the power steering. the steering wheel was tight and the contact experienced extreme difficulty turning the steering wheel left or right. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer who replaced the steering column. the remedy corrected the failure. the contact had been waiting for months to have the vehicle repaired according to nhtsa campaign numbers: 14v252000 (electrical system, electronic stability control, exterior lighting, service brakes, hydraulic, vehicle speed control) and 14v224000 (power train). the dealer did not provide a specific date for when the parts would become available. the manufacturer was notified. the contact also indicated that the vehicle idled high and it was difficult to change gears. the approximate failure mileage was 62,000. updated 11/14/14*cn updated 8/11/2015*js

Power steering has been going out, since we bought the vehicle. *tr

2005 chevrolet malibu. consumer states problem with electric power steering *tgw the dealer test drove the vehicle and was unable to duplicate the failed power steering condition. gm stated they would not authorized a repair that the dealer could not replicate after a test drive. *jb

While driving the power steering shut down. i was unable to steer the vehicle. lost all control of steering while in the rush hour of the day. *tr

The steering wheel became very tight for about 3 mins. and the power steering light flashed on the radio panel. when the steering wheel loosing up it was too loose. the next day the check engine light came on and i went and had a mechanic check it out and he said that it was coming up as an electronic steering failure. *js

During a freeway exit during a decelerating 35mph right turn, the power steering stop operating. continued on home for 3 blocks without any power to steering system. next day, system work good. scary ! ! google problem for info and found a lot of people has had the same problem with no 'fix' available. anyway you could shed some help or information on this scary problem? *js

The warning chime will sound, then i sometimes get a warning note across the dashboard stating "power steering" & then for a brief moment i will have trouble turning the steering wheel; one time when this happened all the warning lights flashed across the dashboard and i lost power for a second & then everything went back to normal until several miles later when the chiming came on again; i paid the chevy dealer to replace the power steering in the summer of 2012 but the problem recurred almost immediately afterward. i am now afraid to drive the car. i don't want any refund, i just want the car to operate reliably & safely. *tr

Power steering fails when accelerating, especially when attempting to merge onto highway traffic. "power steering failure" flashes on the console and chimes sound. failure requires car to be steered using bodily force to control the vehicle, and has almost resulted in numerous accidents. power steering turns back on about 1/2 second after releasing the gas pedal. does not occur with any relative consistency to warrant taking it to the dealer. i have not been contacted by the manufacturer regarding any relevant recalls for this vehicle. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet malibu. while driving approximately 20 mph, a chime sounded inside of the vehicle as the power steering warning indicator illuminated. immediately, there was a complete loss of power steering. the vehicle was maneuvered to the side of the road where the engine was turned off. the failure recurred four times. the engine was restarted and the vehicle resumed as normal. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who stated the power steering column and intermediate shaft would need to be replaced. the vehicle had not been repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the malfunction. the approximate failure mileage was 155,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated that the power steering assist would fail sporadically. the power steering assist would reset independently once the vehicle was shut off and restarted. the vehicle had not been taken to the dealer for inspection or repairs. the current mileage was 125,007 and the failure mileage was unknown. updated 05/08/12*lj

Turning left at about 5 mph, power steering went out and made it hard to turn the corner, almost caused an accident in the middle of an intersection. power steering light came on radio display and buzzer went off. pulled into gas station and restarted engine. problem went away. waiting for it to happen again. judging by the same complaint from others, this will by my last gm. *tr

As other owners have experienced, the steering alarm light went off in my malibu. i have seen that other malibu in my cars vin range experienced the same issue as issued by a gm warning. this seems to me to be an unsafe vehicle and gm should stand behind your vehicle as i could not allow my child to drive to co with the possibility that the steering would go out. while i did not get to the point where we had steering failure, the motor was diagnosed with major issue as did the electronic control which appears to be the root cause of the issue. this car would have steering failure if we did not got to the dealership and replace the motor and steering column. *tr

Power steering quit working. here in 2013, with 175000 miles, gm will not honor their "service policy" , due to miles! it only covered up to 150000 miles! absurd! *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet malibu. the contact stated that the power steering assist failed while driving 35 mph. the power steering light illuminated as the failure occurred. the steering wheel became hard to turn and the contact was able to avoid a crash. the vehicle had to be turned off for a moment in order for the power steering assist to return to normal function. the failure was experienced numerous times. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer to have a diagnostic performed. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 112,000 and the current mileage was 116,000.

Ding sound and then power steering light came on. took to dealership and was told power steering sensor was the cause of the problem. i have read where there have been several complaints on problems with the power steering with this vehicle. i have contacted gm and they proclaim they are not aware of any problems yet there is a letter that was sent out in 2007 extending the warranty on the vehicle. i purchased the vehicle in 2009. i am told the steering column may need to be replaced. *kb

Check engine/power steering light came on when starting down the road. rpms shot up to 4 and 5, car won't shift (automatic car), mph stopped reading, all the info i get through my radio screen went blank, there is only an error sign where my mileage is. *tr
